The Crossover Event From Hell: Evidence, Admissibility, And Truth When Reality Television Meets Criminal Prosecution, K. L. Renner
The Crossover Event From Hell: Evidence, Admissibility, And Truth When Reality Television Meets Criminal Prosecution, K. L. Renner
Georgia Law Review
Erika Girardi has played many roles: Real Housewives star, pop singer, Broadway performer. But Girardi’s new role as a party in a host of lawsuits related to her husband’s alleged embezzlement of client settlement funds may be her most difficult yet. For years, Girardi and her spending habits were closely documented by television cameras and broadcasted to millions of viewers. When news of Girardi’s legal troubles broke, a question emerged: if Girardi were to face criminal charges in connection with her husband’s misdeeds, would prosecutors be able to use years of footage of Girardi to help their cases?
While evidence …

Cisplatin is an effective anticancer agent, but also causes permanent hearing loss by damaging hair cells-the sensory receptors essential for hearing. There is an urgent clinical need to protect cochlear hair cells in patients undergoing cisplatin chemotherapy. The zebrafish lateral line organ contains hair cells and has been frequently used in studies to screen for otoprotective compounds. However, these studies have employed a wide range of cisplatin dosages and exposure times. We therefore performed a comprehensive evaluation of cisplatin ototoxicity in the zebrafish lateral line with the goal of producing a standardized, clinically relevant protocol for future studies. To define …

An Mtorc1 To Hri Signaling Axis Promotes Cytotoxicity Of Proteasome Inhibitors In Multiple Myeloma, Odai Darawshi, Barbara Muz, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Multiple myeloma (MM) causes approximately 20% of deaths from blood cancers. Notwithstanding significant therapeutic progress, such as with proteasome inhibitors (PIs), MM remains incurable due to the development of resistance. mTORC1 is a key metabolic regulator, which frequently becomes dysregulated in cancer. While mTORC1 inhibitors reduce MM viability and synergize with other therapies in vitro, clinically, mTORC1 inhibitors are not effective for MM. Here we show that the inactivation of mTORC1 is an intrinsic response of MM to PI treatment. Genetically enforced hyperactivation of mTORC1 in MM was sufficient to compromise tumorigenicity in mice. In vitro, mTORC1-hyperactivated MM cells gained …

Chronic exposure to airborne carbon black ultrafine (nCB) particles generated from incomplete combustion of organic matter drives IL-17A-dependent emphysema. However, whether and how they alter the immune responses to lung cancer remains unknown. Here, we show that exposure to nCB particles increased PD-L1+ PD-L2+ CD206+ antigen-presenting cells (APCs), exhausted T cells, and Treg cells. Lung macrophages that harbored nCB particles showed selective mitochondrial structure damage and decreased oxidative respiration. Lung macrophages sustained the HIF1α axis that increased glycolysis and lactate production, culminating in an immunosuppressive microenvironment in multiple mouse models of non-small cell lung cancers. Adoptive transfer of lung APCs …

Civil Liability For Damage Resulting From Genetically Modified Organisms (Gmos): A Comparative Study, Dr. Abdul-Rahman Mohamed Salem
مجلة جامعة الإمارات للبحوث القانونية UAEU LAW JOURNAL
The most serious damage to human and other living organisms at present is the damage of genetically modified organisms, where they can eventually be used as weapons of mass destruction in the form of a bacteriological war that destroys human civilization, we will present the problem in terms of: Identification of genetically modified organisms by determining their scope, and to identify the aspects of the damage resulting from them, and how to compensate each type of species, whether it is related to plant, animal, human or the environment. We then present the legal basis for civil liability resulting from damage …

Instructional Message Design, Volume 2
Message design is all around us, from the presentations we see in meetings and classes, to the instructions that come with our latest tech gadgets, to multi-million-dollar training simulations. In short, instructional message design is the real-world application of instructional and learning theories to design the tools and technologies used to communicate and effectively convey information. This field of study pulls from many applied sciences including cognitive psychology, industrial design, graphic design, instructional design, information technology, and human performance technology to name just a few. In this book we will visit several foundational theories that guide our research, look at …

Interest in using various nanoparticle catalysts to activate H2O2 with light for organic contaminant and wastewater treatment is steadily increasing. We successfully synthesized magnetically recoverable Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles using a simple co-precipitation method followed by melamine-assisted calcination. Material characterization revealed that melamine acted as a coordinating agent during the calcination process that promoted a ferrite structure. Copper (Cu)-substitution effectively decreased material aggregation and promoted catalytic activities. Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles showed outstanding catalytic performance on several organic contaminants (87.6–100.0% removal within 2 h). Using oxytetracycline (OTC) …

Where Are The Black Teachers? There Should Be More To Make It Even, Harolyn Harris
Dissertations
For years, Black teachers lived and worked in the communities that they served. I was one of those teachers who lived and worked in my community, but I noticed that there were not many of us. As a Black woman, mother and teacher, I was fully aware of the numbers of Black teachers declining. I wanted to know why.
In this study, I utilized my experience as a Black student, a Black teacher, and a Black administrator to reflect my feelings. I used Critical Race Theory as the theoretical lens on my stories using autoethnography as the research method. I …

Regulation Of Parkinson’S Disease-Associated Genes By Pumilio Proteins And Micrornas In The Human Neuroblastoma Cell Line Sh-Sy5y, Lisa J. Snoderly-Foster
Dissertations
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common age-related, neurodegenerative disease. A small collection of genes has been linked to PD, including SNCA encoding the protein alpha-synuclein that aggregates in Lewy bodies, a hallmark of PD. Overexpression of these genes can lead to pathogenesis, yet the regulatory mechanisms that control protein production of the genes are not fully understood. The SH-SY5Y neuronal cell line is a common model for the study of neurodegenerative diseases, including PD. However, SH-SY5Y cells are difficult to transfect, a process necessary for genetic manipulations and downstream analysis of RNA and protein. Herein, I describe the …

Animal movement patterns are affected by complex interactions between biotic and abiotic landscape conditions, and these patterns are being altered by weather variability associated with a changing climate. Some animals, like the American plains bison (Bison bison L.; hereafter, plains bison), are considered keystone species, thus their response to weather variability may alter ecosystem structure and biodiversity patterns. Many movement studies of plains bison and other ungulates have focused on point-pattern analyses (e.g., resource-selection) that have provided information about where these animals move, but information about when or why these animals move is limited. For example, information surrounding the …

Protein Phosphatase 2a Regulates Xanthine Oxidase-Derived Ros Production In Macrophages And Influx Of Inflammatory Monocytes In A Murine Gout Model, Sandy Elsayed, Khaled A. Elsaid
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Gout is a common arthritis, due to deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals which results in IL-1β secretion by tissue-resident macrophages. Xanthine oxidase (XO) catalyzes uric acid (UA) production and in the process, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated which contributes to NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) may be involved in regulating inflammatory pathways in macrophages. The objective of this study was to investigate whether PP2A regulates gout inflammation, mediated by XO activity modulation. We studied UA and ROS generations in MSU stimulated murine bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs) in response to fingolimod phosphate, a PP2A activator, …
Ovid’S Casebook: The Literary Jurisprudence Of The Metamorphoses, Ian Ward
Ovid’S Casebook: The Literary Jurisprudence Of The Metamorphoses, Ian Ward
New England Classical Journal
Roman literature has, thus far, assumed a relatively modest place in the canon of literary jurisprudence. Yet it presents a rich resource for scholars interested, not just in Roman law, but in law today. This article will revisit Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a text which has continued to fascinate literary scholars since the Renaissance. It will suggest that Metamorphoses can be read as a ‘casebook’ in Roman law, and more especially the law relating to marriage and sexuality. At the same time, it will be argued that Ovid had a rather greater argument to make in regard to the broader sweep of …

The history of video games is critically underdeveloped. Long simmering under a veil of academic neglect, video games have long been denied the sort of academic relevance of their sister industries: books, film, music, and TV. It is long-past time that such neglect was addressed. Most historical analyses of games begin with their origins in the 1950s, discuss their ubiquity during the heyday of Atari or Nintendo, or rope in modern views of games as tools of diversity and inclusion. Very few studies pay attention to the rather ugly adolescent years of the game industry, its motorcycle-jacket wearing, rebellious teenage …

Improving Translatability Of Spinal Cord Injury Research By Including Age As A Demographic Variable, Andrew N. Stewart, Linda A. T. Jones, John C. Gensel
Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers
Pre-clinical and clinical spinal cord injury (SCI) studies differ in study design, particularly in the demographic characteristics of the chosen population. In clinical study design, criteria such as such as motor scores, neurological level, and severity of injury are often key determinants for participant inclusion. Further, demographic variables in clinical trials often include individuals from a wide age range and typically include both sexes, albeit historically most cases of SCI occur in males. In contrast, pre-clinical SCI models predominately utilize young adult rodents and typically use only females. While it is often not feasible to power SCI clinical trials to …

Naturally occurring human infections by zoonotic Plasmodium species have been documented for P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. simium, P. simiovale, P. inui, P. inui-like, P. coatneyi, and P. brasilianum. Accurate detection of each species is complicated by their morphological similarities with other Plasmodium species. PCR-based assays offer a solution but require prior knowledge of adequate genomic targets that can distinguish the species. While whole genomes have been published for P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. simium, and P. inui, no complete genome for P. brasilianum has …

Chagas disease is a neglected vector-borne zoonosis caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi that is primarily transmitted by insects of the subfamily Triatominae. Although control efforts targeting domestic infestations of Rhodnius prolixus have been largely successful, with several regions in Boyacá department certified free of T. cruzi transmission by intradomicile R. prolixus, novel native species are emerging, increasing the risk of disease. Triatoma dimidiata is the second most important species in Colombia, and conventional control methods seem to be less effective. In this study we evaluated the efficacy and usefulness of micro-encapsulated insecticide paints in laboratory conditions and its …

The Keynesian Stimulus Model: Stimulating Economic Activities With Stimulus Payments, Christopher Osuoha
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Governments use cash transfers as a fiscal measure to stimulate economic activities during shocks. As COVID-19 continues to ravage economies globally, governments worldwide have responded with fiscal and monetary policies to manage its economic impact. In addition, the U.S government has intervened with direct transfers to provide liquidity to prevent a prolonged shock. However, opinions are divided on the efficacy of the Keynesian stimulus policy to generate enough of a multiplier to stimulate economic activities compared to the monetarist approach. This study analyzes the classical Keynesian model and compares it with the monetarist model to provide insight for policymakers into …
