Premature Grey Wolf Delisting, Dr. Edward A. Fitzgerald
Premature Grey Wolf Delisting, Dr. Edward A. Fitzgerald
Natural Resources Journal
On November 3, 2020 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“FWS”)1 issued “Removing the Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus) From the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife” (“Final Rule”) delisting the gray wolf in forty-eight states, except for the Mexican gray wolf in the Southwest.2 This Final Rule returned gray wolf management to the states. Wolf delisting was a last-minute gift from the Trump administration to conservative voters, particularly hunters, trappers, and livestock owners right before the November 2020 presidential election. Hunters and trappers view the wolf as a competitor for the game that they want to kill, while livestock owners …
Reductant-Free Ozonolysis Of Alkenes : Acid-Catalyzed Hydration Of Criegee Intermediate, Joshua Osorio
Reductant-Free Ozonolysis Of Alkenes : Acid-Catalyzed Hydration Of Criegee Intermediate, Joshua Osorio
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The in-water ozonolysis of alkenes is an emerging alternative method to the conventional ozonolysis since it eliminates the requirement for a reductive work-up step using expensive and hazardous reductants such as dimethyl sulfide, triphenylphosphine, and zinc in acetic acid. Despite its greenness, it still suffers from competing reactions (such as the Baeyer-Villiger reaction and advanced oxidation process) and poor yields of the carbonyl product. Herein, we report the effect of adding an acid as a catalyst in the formation of carbonyl products from in-water ozonolysis. Styrenes and olefinic natural products were dissolved in a mixture of 95:5 (v/v) acetone-water (c.a.[c] …

Effects Of Articular Knee Injections On Cartilage Of Knee Osteoarthritis Patients And Development Of Rapid Decalcification Method For Articular Cartilage And Subchondral Bone, Pattaranatcha Charnwichai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease that affects articular cartilage. Intra-articular injection (IA) is one of the treatments that is used to reduce pain and relieve symptoms. Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) are frequently used in IA injections for OA treatment. Several publications have reported effects of TA, but some of HA, on articular cartilage. Moreover, for histopathological studies, articular cartilage and subchondral bones are commonly used as samples, but the decalcification process is time consuming. Thus, this study aims to compare effects of drugs used in IA injections on cartilage and chondrocytes of osteoarthritis …
Sentience In Decapod Crustaceans: A General Framework And Review Of The Evidence, Andrew Crump, Heather Browning, Alex Schnell, Charlotte Burn, Jonathan Birch
Sentience In Decapod Crustaceans: A General Framework And Review Of The Evidence, Andrew Crump, Heather Browning, Alex Schnell, Charlotte Burn, Jonathan Birch
Animal Sentience
We outline a framework for evaluating scientific evidence of sentience, focusing on pain experience. It includes eight neural and cognitive-behavioural criteria, with confidence levels for each criterion reflecting the reliability and quality of the evidence. We outline the rationale for each criterion and apply our framework to a controversial sentience candidate: decapod crustaceans. We have either high or very high confidence that true crabs (infraorder Brachyura) satisfy five criteria, amounting to strong evidence of sentience. Moreover, we have high confidence that both anomuran crabs (infraorder Anomura) and astacid lobsters/crayfish (infraorder Astacidea) meet three criteria—substantial evidence of sentience. The case is, …

Remdesivir Analog As Sars-Cov-2 Polymerase Inhibitor: Virtual Screening Of A Database Generated By Scaffold Replacement, Amgad Albohy, Mohamed A. Said, Mohamed A. Abdelrahman, Hany Said
Pharmacy
By the end of 2019, a novel strain of the corona viral family named SARS-CoV-2 emerged in Wuhan, China and started to spread worldwide causing one of the most dangerous lethal pandemics. Researchers utilized various reported inhibitors and drug databases for virtual screening analysis against this novel strain. Later on, they succeeded to fish and repurpose remdesivir, an antiviral nucleotide analogue that inhibits RNA polymerase of the Ebola virus, as a promising candidate against SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we used the interactions of the co-crystallized metabolite of remdesivir with SARS-CoV-2 RdRp isozyme (PDB 7BV2) to design an analog with potential …

What We Ask Of Law, Aziz Z. Huq
What We Ask Of Law, Aziz Z. Huq
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
A minimal, reasonably uncontroversial, demand of a legal system is that it should stabilize a polity against the chance hazards of ordinary violence and soften the blows of extraordinary, destabilizing misfortune. Law in the contemporary United States, however, has not abated the lethal toll of violent crime, the serial mass shootings of children, the endless flow of racialized police violence, or even the toll of insurrectionary violence that shadows democratic politics. The gap between law’s operation in practice and its ultimate aspirations toward social order offers a hint that something in our dominant working model of law, and its relation …

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Congressional enactments and executive orders instruct agencies to publish their anticipated rules in what is known as the Unified Agenda. The Agenda’s stated purpose is to ensure that political actors can monitor regulatory development. Agencies have come under fire in recent years, however, for conspicuous omissions and irregularities. Critics allege that agencies hide their regulations from the public strategically, that is, to thwart potential political opposition. Others contend that such behavior is benign, perhaps the inevitable result of changing internal priorities or unforeseen events.
To examine these competing hypotheses, this Article uses a new dataset spanning over thirty years of …

Zebra Mussel Length-Weight Relationships Across Various Substrate Types In Lake Bemidji, Mitch Kehne
Zebra Mussel Length-Weight Relationships Across Various Substrate Types In Lake Bemidji, Mitch Kehne
Journal of Earth and Life Science
As of November 2021, zebra mussels were confirmed in 270 Minnesotan lakes with another 232 lakes listed as infested due to their connection or proximity to where zebra mussels have been found. With lack of effective treatments to impede their spread, zebra mussels continue to colonize new areas causing ecological as well as economic harm. The goal of this study was to establish a length-weight relationship for the zebra mussel population in Lake Bemidji using shell length (SL) and wet weight (WW), as well as to assess substrate type and log transformed shell length as predictors of log transformed zebra …
Changes In The Minnesota Northern Pike Population Over The Past Thirty Years, Joey Severin
Changes In The Minnesota Northern Pike Population Over The Past Thirty Years, Joey Severin
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Northern pike Esox lucius are one of the most popular game fish in Minnesota. Many anglers have noticed that northern pike seemed to decrease in size throughout much of this state. Catch per unit of effort (CPUE) drives average weight for northern pike; within lakes, as CPUE goes up average weight decreases. Decreases in size has led the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) to implement new regulations on northern pike. The MNDNR noticed that not all the state has this same problem with Northern Pike, and has broken down the state into three zones, with different protected slots and …
Mechanisms And Consequences Of Cross-Generational Acclimatization In Reef-Building Corals, Kevin Harrison Wong
Mechanisms And Consequences Of Cross-Generational Acclimatization In Reef-Building Corals, Kevin Harrison Wong
Open Access Dissertations
Coral reefs are valued over trillions of dollars and are becoming increasingly degraded due to global climate change. Ocean warming disrupts the symbiotic relationship between corals and their algal symbiont, Symbiodinaceae, leading to severe energetic reduction and increased mortality. Recent studies have identified the potential for beneficial within-generational and cross-generational acclimatization to mitigate the impacts of future environmental change, however the mechanisms and outcomes remain understudied in tropical corals. Here, I present three manuscripts testing different mechanisms of within- and cross-generational acclimatization in corals to understand the long-term consequences of ocean warming. First, we tested the hypothesis that the survival …
Clustering Of Cancerous Genomes Using Efficient Distance Calculations, Yana Hrytsenko
Clustering Of Cancerous Genomes Using Efficient Distance Calculations, Yana Hrytsenko
Open Access Dissertations
Comparative cancer genomics can elucidate similarities in genome variation across different types of cancer. Current approaches are implemented through the identification of mutations in specific pathways present in multiple cancers. However, the major shortcoming of these approaches is in identifying specific genes that are similar rather than determining broad-scale patterns of variation in the genome. Similarities found in these patterns across cancers may be linked to similarities in driver mutations and thus lead to treatment approaches with a higher success rate. Identification of such similarities requires comparison of whole genomes and is not always easy to do using traditional alignment-based …

Wearable User-Centric Zero-Configuration Haptic Feedback System Design In Connected Environments, Joshua V. Gyllinksy
Open Access Dissertations
This doctoral dissertation focused on the creation of wearables for gait which feature haptic feedback systems and can make use of Connected Environments (CE). The developed systems were created in a user-centric way with the intent of minimizing human effort for setup and configuration, using zero-configuration for network self-discovery and unattended organization.
CE empowers Internet Of Things (IoT) technologies to become non-stationary, enabling users to multitask, focusing on things other than the IoT Device. Since these technologies often are intended to have high availability and in some cases be always-on, discreet communication channels, such as the haptics of the vibration …

Probabilistic Vision Only Localization In Single And Multiple Mobile Robot Systems, Sarah E. Brent
Open Access Dissertations
In this work, we address and propose solutions to the problem of localization in single and multi-robot systems using vision as the sole sensor. We first propose a study on landmark identification as a step towards a localization setup for real-world robotic swarms setup. In real world, landmark identification is often tackled as a place recognition problem through the use of computationally intensive Convolution Neural Networks. However, the components of a robotic swarm usually have limited computational and sensing capabilities that allows only for the application of relatively shallow networks that results in large percentage of recognition errors. In [1], …
The Role Of Gli2 In B Cell Biology, Laura Kehoe
The Role Of Gli2 In B Cell Biology, Laura Kehoe
Master's Theses and Capstones
B cells are an important part of the host defense against pathogens by secreting immunoglobulins (Igs)/antibodies (Abs). Igs are highly specialized molecules due to a DNA recombination process that occurs to generate the variable region. An Ab molecule also undergoes class switch recombination (CSR) after encountering an antigen. Our lab has shown that the transcription factor GLI2 can regulate IgM secretion in immortalized malignant B cells derived from Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) patients and can modulate several cytokines. However, if GLI2 plays a role in B cell biology and class switch recombination is unknown. In mice with a B cell-specific Gli2-deficiency …
Economic Valuation Of Pfas Remediation In New Hampshire Municipal Drinking Water Systems: A Contingent Valuation Approach, Tristan Colby Price
Economic Valuation Of Pfas Remediation In New Hampshire Municipal Drinking Water Systems: A Contingent Valuation Approach, Tristan Colby Price
Master's Theses and Capstones
In the past two decades there has been an increase in detection and awareness of PFAS (Per- or Polyfluoroalkyl substances) chemicals in groundwater and drinking water in the United States. In stark contrast to other known harmful chemical pollutants, little is known yet about the specific epidemiological and toxicological effects of prolonged intake and consumption of PFAS chemicals in environmentally occurring levels. New Hampshire in particular has encountered two high-profile episodes of PFAS contamination with hotspots in Merrimack, NH due to factory pollution and Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH due to military activity. These instances have brought increased attention …
Evaluating The Effects Of Mechlorethamine On The Dermal-Epidermal Junction, Trishaal Janardhanam Raghavendra Rao
Evaluating The Effects Of Mechlorethamine On The Dermal-Epidermal Junction, Trishaal Janardhanam Raghavendra Rao
Theses and Dissertations
Sulfur Mustard (SM) is a chemical warfare agent first utilized on the battlefield more than 100 years ago. To the present time, no antidote to combat the dermatotoxicity of SM exists. Mechlorethamine (HN2) is a derivative of SM which is used in anticancer therapy. Dermal exposure of HN2 is associated with dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ) disruption (vesication) which limits its clinical usefulness. The primary purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms of vesication caused by HN2 using an in vivo mouse ear vesicant model (MEVM). The ears of male or female C57BL/ 6J mice were exposed to a …
Ecosystem Damage Leading To A Possible Human Extinction, Meagan Wilburn, Matthew Balentine
Ecosystem Damage Leading To A Possible Human Extinction, Meagan Wilburn, Matthew Balentine
Scholar's Day
While there are many factors that could lead to possible human extinction, the interaction between humans and the planet is something that needs to be monitored and changed, in order to prevent any more harm to the environment. By shaping the ecosystem and environment in a way that only benefits humans, there has been a tremendous loss of biodiversity. This will affect humans’ way of life. As everything is connected, it is important to understand the risks of how humans are treating the planet, so conservation efforts can be implemented based on the current state of the environment.

Generation Z (Gen Z), consisting of individuals born between 1995-2010, is an important target for nonprofits due to the cohort’s high degree of social consciousness. However, Gen Z consumers are challenging to impact via advertising appeals due to their short attention spans. Our research investigates the relative impact of advertising appeals based on reactive guilt, anticipatory guilt, and existential guilt on Gen Z students at a West Coast private university. The study fills a research gap by comparing all three types of guilt in one study and examining their effect on Gen Z vs. non-Gen Z individuals. Student groups at …

Bjp And Donyi-Polo: New Challenges To Christianity In Arunachal Pradesh And Northeast India, Dyron Daughrity
All Faculty Open Access Publications
Located on the disputed border with China, Arunachal Pradesh is the most remote of India’s northeastern states. Christianity is growing there—from 1 percent in 1971 to 30 percent in 2011—but that number may have reached a plateau. Arunachal Pradesh is undergoing rapid sociocultural change. While Hinduism is not well-established in the region, there is tremendous interest in a relatively new religion called Donyi-Polo. Some Hindus argue Donyi-Polo is actually a branch of Hinduism, and they are having some success in making this claim. This article explores the changing religious, political, and cultural dynamics of Arunachal Pradesh.

Background: In the last few years, empirical research on intellectual humility has grown notably, involving the elaboration of promising measures that provide a different outlook on the construct. Although all of them offer valid, theoretically sound, and meaningful contributions, we selected the 22-item Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale (CIHS) by Krumrei-Mancuso and Rouse for validation. The rationale for choosing this questionnaire for Polish validation stands in its multidimensional nature, which enables the study of various nuances of this psychological concept. Methods: The research was carried out with the participation of 260 adults (Study 1) and 210 adults (Study 2). The respondents …

Effects Of Supplemented Intra- And Extra-Cellular Trehalose On Cryopreservation Of Feline Oocytes, Saengtawan Arayatham
Effects Of Supplemented Intra- And Extra-Cellular Trehalose On Cryopreservation Of Feline Oocytes, Saengtawan Arayatham
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Study 1 aimed at examining the effects of different stages of oocyte maturation and trehalose concentrations on freezing ability and developmental capability of feline oocytes. The immature and matured feline oocytes were cryopreserved and thawed. They were assessed for developmental competence. The effects of different concentrations of trehalose (0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1 M) on the freezing ability of feline oocytes were tested. The cryopreservation generally induced poor embryo development, while immature oocytes were more susceptible to cryodamage compared with the matured oocytes (P<0.05). Incubation of oocytes with high concentrations of trehalose (0.5, 1 M) significantly reduced the developmental competence. Optimal concentrations of trehalose during cryopreservation of immature and matured oocytes were different (0.125 M and 0.25 M, respectively). It is concluded that stages of meiotic maturation affected the freezing ability of feline oocytes. Optimal concentration of trehalose was differently required for immature and matured feline oocytes. Study 2 aimed at examining the effect of membrane-permeable trehalose on the freezing ability of feline oocytes matured in vitro. intracellular trehalose (trehalose hexaacetate; Tre-(OAc)6) was synthesized from trehalose precursor and subjected to spectroscopic characterization. The membrane permeability of the Tre-(OAc)6 was investigated by incubating oocytes with different concentrations of Tre-(OAc)6 (3, 15, and 30 mM) and optimum concentration and the toxicity of Tre-(OAc)6 were subsequently assessed. The effects of Tre-(OAc)6 on freezing ability in terms of apoptotic gene expression and developmental competence of in-vitro matured oocytes were examined, respectively. The Tre-(OAc)6 permeated into the ooplasm of cat oocytes in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The highest concentration of intracellular trehalose was detected when the oocytes were incubated for 24 h with 30 mM Tre-(OAc)6. For the toxicity test, incubation of oocytes with 3 mM Tre-(OAc)6 for 24 h did not affect maturation rate and embryo development. However, high doses of Tre-(OAc)6 (15 and 30 mM) significantly reduced maturation and fertilization rates (P < 0.05). In addition, frozen-thawed oocytes treated with 3 mM Tre-(OAc)6 significantly upregulated anti-apoptotic (BCL-2) gene expression compared with the control (0 mM) and other Tre-(OAc)6 concentrations (15 and 30 mM). Oocyte maturation in the presence of 3 mM Tre-(OAc)6 prior to cryopreservation significantly improved oocyte developmental competence in terms of cleavage and blastocyst rates when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Our results lead us to infer that increasing the levels of intracellular trehalose by Tre-(OAc)6 during oocyte maturation improves the freezing ability of feline oocytes, albeit at specific concentrations. Study 3 aimed at examining the effects of combination of intra-cellular (Tre-(OAc)6) and extra-cellular (α,α-trehalose) trehalose on freezing ability of feline oocytes. Optimal concentrations of Tre-(OAc)6 (0, 1.5, and 3 mM) and trehalose (0, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 M) were investigated for cryopreservation of matured feline oocytes. The combination of the two optimal concentrations were subsequently examined. The results showed that 3 mM of Tre-(OAc)6 improved post-thawed developmental competence, while extra-cellular trehalose at 0.25 M significant enhanced freezing ability of feline oocytes (P<0.05). The combination of intra- and extra-cellular trehalose significantly improved developmental capability of frozen-thawed matured feline oocytes compared to non-trehalose control.

Metaproteomic Analysis Of Gut Resistome In The Cecal Microbiota Of Fattening Pigs Raised Without Antibiotics, Pamornya Buthasane
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Improper use of antibiotics in swine could reduce commensal bacteria and possibly increase pathogen infections via the gut resistome. This study aimed to compare the metaproteomic profiles of gut resistome and related metabolism in the cecal microbiota of fattening pigs raised under antibiotic-free (ABF) conditions with those of ordinary industrial pigs (controls, CTRL). The top three relative abundant microbials in both groups were Escherichia coli, Ruminococcus and Lactobacillus, followed by Bacteroides and Bifidobacterium. E. coli, Lactobacillus and Bacteroides were found to be increased in the CTRL group, whereas Ruminococcus and Clostridium were greater in the ABF group. The highest abundance …
