What Egyptian Papyri Did Joseph Smith Possess?, Stephen O. Smoot, John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, John S. Thompson

BYU Studies

In early July 1835, Joseph Smith acquired some Egyptian papyri from which he claimed to translate the Book of Abraham. From historical evidence and the papyrus fragments that were returned to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in November 1967, we can piece together a profile of what papyri the Prophet is known to have possessed.

Functionalization Of Chitosan Based Microparticles For In Vitro 3d Culture Of Human Liver Cells, William Imes Jan 2022

Functionalization Of Chitosan Based Microparticles For In Vitro 3d Culture Of Human Liver Cells, William Imes

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Previous work involving 3D culture of human liver cells with fluorinated chitosan based microparticles has shown that their incorporation provides needed structural cues that the culture of cells alone does not provide, such as increased gas transport. However, using bare microparticles to grow large 3D cellular structures is not practical as they tend to collapse before any meaningful research can be done on them. It is proposed that this is because of the lack of extracellular matrix (ECM)components within pure cell culture in vitro, which in their absence cannot adequately facilitate biochemical communication and adhesion between cells. It is …

The Impact Of Misinformation On The Covid-19 Pandemic In The United States, Kristina A. Latchana Jan 2022

The Impact Of Misinformation On The Covid-19 Pandemic In The United States, Kristina A. Latchana

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 Pandemic has led to millions of deaths and created something of a ‘new normal’. However, along with the virus came an additional ‘infodemic,’: a veritable flood of misinformation about vaccines and treatments. In this thesis I will investigate if misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, treatments, and the pandemic has negatively impacted the pandemic in the United States by leading to more cases. Search terms about accurate information and misinformation related to the pandemic were analyzed with Google Search Trends to find relative popularity by state and then compared against COVID-19 positive case rate data from the …

“The Neurological Effects Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis On Marine Mammals And Its Implications On Florida Wildlife”, Grace Grace Putnam Jan 2022

“The Neurological Effects Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis On Marine Mammals And Its Implications On Florida Wildlife”, Grace Grace Putnam

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

The dwindling population of the Florida manatee faces greater threats every year. With the addition of a domoic acid (DA) producing algal bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia, in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), they may have yet another threat. This study uses prior literature to compare and contrast the neuroanatomy of the California Sea Lion, Zalophus californianus, and the Florida Manatee, Trichechus manatus, to predict the effects of DA toxicosis in manatees. It also investigates the possible effects of this kind of harmful algal bloom (HAB) in the IRL and for the people living near it. This study demonstrates, based on DA …

The Effect Of Sulindac On Senescence In Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cells, Samuel Manoharan Jan 2022

The Effect Of Sulindac On Senescence In Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cells, Samuel Manoharan

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in industrialized countries. Cellular senescence was shown to be involved int he pathogenesis of AMD. We have shown that sulindac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, protects normal cells such as retinal cells against oxidative damage through preconditioning mechanism. To test this, we established an in vitro model for senescence in RPE cells by a treatment of hydrogen peroxide (oxidative stressor) for 12 hours followed by incubation for four days. We assayed for senescence by Beta-galactosidase assay to stain senescent cells. Effect of sulindac was tested by pre-treating cells with sulindac at different …

A Virtual Gallery, Kiana Slimak

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

This thesis document describes an immersive world that can be experienced through the virtual reality (VR) platform Oculus. I created this space using the game development software Unity. In the environment, there is a stylized art gallery displaying three oil paintings that have been compartmentalized with the software Photoshop, then animated with code written in a software called Processing. This thesis provides personal experience and research to validify and contextualize the use of VR for meditative spaces and shared emotive experiences.

Relationship Between Repertoire Size And Fitness In Male Bachman’S Sparrow (Peucaea Aestivalis), Austin Stratt Jan 2022

Relationship Between Repertoire Size And Fitness In Male Bachman’S Sparrow (Peucaea Aestivalis), Austin Stratt

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Songs of oscine songbirds serve two social functions: mate attraction and courtship, and male-male competition over mates and resources. In a field experiment, we studied if song repertoire size predicts male size and condition in Bachman’s Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis). We collected size measurements and complete repertoire recordings of 11 male Bachman’s sparrows from an established population at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Hobe Sound, FL, U.S.A. Results indicate that there is a negative correlation between some male size measurements and repertoire size. Our results show an intriguing and unpredicted relationship between male physical traits and repertoire size in Bachman’s Sparrow.

Enhanced Study Of Complex Systems By Unveiling Hidden Symmetries With Dynamical Visibility, Nhat Vu Minh Nguyen Jan 2022

Enhanced Study Of Complex Systems By Unveiling Hidden Symmetries With Dynamical Visibility, Nhat Vu Minh Nguyen

2022 Symposium

One of the great challenges in complex and chaotic dynamics is to reveal its deterministic structures. These temporal dynamical structures are sometimes a consequence of hidden symmetries. Detecting and understanding them can allow the study of complex systems even without knowing the full underlying mathematical description of the system. Here we introduce a new technique, called Dynamical Visibility, that quantifies temporal correlations of the dynamics based upon some symmetry conditions. This visibility measures the departure of the dynamics from internal symmetries. We apply this technique to well-known chaotic systems, such as the logistic map and the circle map, as well …

Differentiating The Effects Of Two Non-Native Fish In The Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Sarah Richardson Jan 2022

Differentiating The Effects Of Two Non-Native Fish In The Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Sarah Richardson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

This study seeks to determine the individual effects of two non-native fish, the brook stickleback, Culaea inconstans, and pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus, on the aquatic invertebrates and food webs of Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR). Ten ponds were analyzed and compared with stable isotope analysis and invertebrate abundance data. Three ponds were chosen to represent each of the following categories: fishless, brook stickleback invaded (BS), and coinvaded, along with a single pumpkinseed (PS) pond. Overall, δ[superscript]13C and δ[superscript]15N values increased in invaded ponds, indicating shifts in the zooplankton community structure and the carbon source of predatory invertebrates. Mean δ[superscript]13C was the …

The Role Of The Skin Microbiome In Amphibian Pathogen Susceptibility In Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Krista S. Dodd Jan 2022

The Role Of The Skin Microbiome In Amphibian Pathogen Susceptibility In Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Krista S. Dodd

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has led to the decline and extinction of many amphibian populations, but some bacteria in the skin microbiome can inhibit its growth. In Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) in eastern Washington, Bd is highly prevalent, but the role of the skin microbiome in Bd infection dynamics have not been examined in this region. We hypothesized that frogs with lower Bd infection intensities would have higher skin bacterial diversity and more abundant anti-Bd bacteria, indicative of a more protective function. Our study combined cultureindependent and culture-dependent methods to assess the relationship between Bd and the …

Population Assignment Of Entrained Migratory Westslope Cutthroat Trout In North Idaho, Craig D. Wells Jan 2022

Population Assignment Of Entrained Migratory Westslope Cutthroat Trout In North Idaho, Craig D. Wells

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The Clark Fork-Pend Oreille River basin of northeastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle historically supported a robust metapopulation of Westslope Cutthroat Trout (WCT) Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi, a western native salmonid of high cultural and economic value. The construction of impassible hydroelectric dams and smaller in-stream barriers has prevented the return of migratory WCT to spawning tributaries, likely leading to the fragmentation of this metapopulation over the last 100 years. One such impassible barrier is Albeni Falls Dam near Newport, Washington. Completed without fish passage capabilities in 1955, Albeni Falls Dam has been of interest as a site for restoring fish …

Assessing The Behavioral Response Of Westslope Cutthroat Trout To Olfactory Cues In A Two-Choice Y-Maze, Hannah Marie Condron

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The goal of this study was to determine which olfactory cues were most attractive to Westslope Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi (WCT) in a two-choice Y-maze. WCT used in this study were from Kings Lake and Paqua Creek in Pend Oreille County, Washington, and tested in 2018 and 2019. The different odorants tested in this study were population-specific pheromones produced by WCT from the same population, conspecific pheromones produced by WCT from the second population, and water obtained from each population’s natal stream. The water Kings Lake WCT were reared in for one year at the Spokane Hatchery was also …

Third Amendment To The Chinese Copyright Law, Peter K. Yu Jan 2022

Third Amendment To The Chinese Copyright Law, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Since July 2011, China has actively explored ways to upgrade its copyright law. Although the law was already amended the year before, only two changes were made at that time. The last time Chinese copyright law undertook a major overhaul was more than two decades ago, two months before the country became the 143rd member of the WTO in December 2001.

On November 11, 2020, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China finally approved the Third Amendment to the Chinese Copyright Law. Covering a wide range of issues from eligibility to ownership and from enforcement to anti-circumvention …

Bioaerosol exposure has been linked to health problems such as asthma, airway irritant symptoms, infectious, gastrointestinal and skin diseases, and cancer. Our objective was to characterize the exposure of urban collectors and drivers to inhalable bioaerosols and to measured the cytotoxic effect of air samples in order to evaluate their health risk.

Personal and ambient air sampling were conducted during the summer of 2019. Workers from 12 waste trucks collecting recyclables, organic waste or compost were evaluated. Bacteria and fungi were cultured, molecular biology methods were used to …

Civil Rights Law Equity: An Introduction To A Theory Of What Civil Rights Has Become, John Valery White Jan 2022

Civil Rights Law Equity: An Introduction To A Theory Of What Civil Rights Has Become, John Valery White

Scholarly Works

This Article argues that civil rights law is better understood as civil rights equity. It contends that the four-decade-long project of restricting civil rights litigation has shaped civil rights jurisprudence into a contemporary version of traditional equity. For years commentators have noted the low success rates of civil rights suits and debated the propriety of increasingly restrictive procedural and substantive doctrines. Activists have lost faith in civil rights litigation as an effective tool for social change, instead seeking change in administrative forums, or by asserting political pressure through social media and activism to compel policy change. As for civil rights …

Carrie Menkel-Meadow: Leading Us Toward Justice And Peace, Jean R. Sternlight

Scholarly Works

This Essay explores how Carrie Menkel-Meadow's life and work have both highlighted the path of "And"-showing and explaining that it is not only possible but also desirable to seek justice as well as peace, to be both activist and neutral. Of course, tensions will remain. Regarding particular issues in specific moments we all must decide which path we can and should take. Which activism is best, and which goes too far? With whom can we or should we negotiate, and when should we instead say, "I can't negotiate with this person or group"? When should we talk and listen, and …

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Co-authorship networks can provide key insights into the production of scientific knowledge. This is particularly interesting in Antarctica, where most human activity relates to scientific research. Bibliometric studies of Antarctic science have provided a useful understanding of international and interdisciplinary collaboration, yet most research has focused on broad-scale analyses over recent time periods. Here, we take advantage of a ‘Goldilocks’ opportunity in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an internationally important region of Antarctica and the largest ice-free region on the continent. The McMurdo Dry Valleys have attracted continuous and diverse scientific activity since 1958. It is a geographically confined region with …

The Biochemistry Of Ursolic Acid: A Potential Therapeutic For Neuro-Inflammation, Emma Jane Arsenault Jan 2022

The Biochemistry Of Ursolic Acid: A Potential Therapeutic For Neuro-Inflammation, Emma Jane Arsenault

Master's Theses and Capstones

Ursolic acid (UA) is a naturally occurring triterpenoid found in a variety of plants and berries. This molecule has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties with the potential to treat a wide variety of conditions, including neuro-inflammatory disorders. However, the exact mechanism of action for UA is unknown. In this thesis, the fundamental biochemistry of UA was investigated by studying two potential targets: lipid rafts and protein phosphatases. Lipid rafts are an important platform for a wide variety of signal transduction pathways and are a docking point for the assembly of the pro-inflammatory NADPH oxidase 2. The impact of UA on …

Decitizenizing Asian Pacific American Women, Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Margaret Hu Jan 2022

Decitizenizing Asian Pacific American Women, Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Margaret Hu

University of Colorado Law Review

The Page Act of 1875 excluded Asian women immigrants from entering the United States, presuming they were prostitutes. This presumption was tragically replicated in the 2021 Atlanta Massacre of six Asian and Asian American women, reinforcing the same harmful prejudices. This Article seeks to illuminate how the Atlanta Massacre is symbolic of larger forms of discrimination, including the harms of decitizenship. These harms include limited access to full citizenship rights due to legal barriers, restricted cultural and political power, and a lack of belonging. The Article concludes that these harms result from the structure of past and present immigration laws …
