The Good, The Bad, And The Historically Anti-Semitic: An Analytical Comparison Of Anti-Hate Laws In Germany And The United States, Jamie Rauch Dec 2021

The Good, The Bad, And The Historically Anti-Semitic: An Analytical Comparison Of Anti-Hate Laws In Germany And The United States, Jamie Rauch

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Confronted every day with drastically increasing accounts of hate crimes and hate speech, nations’ legislators have routinely tried and subsequently failed to implement effective legislation capable of curbing the hatred epidemic currently sweeping the globe. This failure is due in large part to the lack of a universal stance on hate crime regulation and criminalization. Two countries in particular, the United States and Germany, embody two diametrically opposing approaches taken by nations in the present-day war on hate speech. This Note explores the dramatic dichotomy between the legislative framework surrounding the regulation of hate speech in these two countries. This …

Quantifiability: Concurrent Correctness From First Principles, Victor Cook Dec 2021

Quantifiability: Concurrent Correctness From First Principles, Victor Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Architectural imperatives due to the slowing of Moore's Law, the broad acceptance of relaxed semantics and the O(n!) worst case verification complexity of sequential histories motivate a new approach to concurrent correctness. Desiderata for a new correctness condition are that it be independent of sequential histories, compositional over objects, flexible as to timing, modular as to semantics and free of inherent locking or waiting. This dissertation proposes Quantifiability, a novel correctness condition based on intuitive first principles. Quantifiablity is formally defined with its system model. Useful properties of quantifiability such as compositionality, measurablility and observational refinement are demonstrated. Quantifiability models …

Investigation Into Wedge Turbulator Effects In High Aspect Ratio Cooling Channels, Daniel Garcia Dec 2021

Investigation Into Wedge Turbulator Effects In High Aspect Ratio Cooling Channels, Daniel Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

With reusability being a novel design parameter for liquid rocket engines (LRE), the need to lower internal wall temperatures for an increased engine longevity is a desired outcome. One of the mechanisms that has been effectively implemented is the use of high aspect ratio cooling channels (HARCC) to promote fin-like effects from internal cooling channel sidewalls. In the gas turbine industry, the use of wedge turbulators has gained recognition for its heat augmentation properties with relatively low pressure drop penalty. In an ideal case, LRE's could adopt the wedge turbulator cooling technique to enhance the benefits of HARCC with minimal …

Feasibility Analysis Of Smart Home Devices - A Domestic Consumer Perspective, A Vittaleswar Dec 2021

Feasibility Analysis Of Smart Home Devices - A Domestic Consumer Perspective, A Vittaleswar

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

The internet of things (IoT) is a relatively new technology that establishes a global network of machines and devices capable of communicating and exchanging data over the internet. However, IoT and the internet are not the same things. IoT generates, analyzes, and makes decisions about connected objects; in other words, the IoT is smarter than the internet. One of the most common applications that make use of the IoT infrastructure to connect multiple sensors is the smart home. The sensors can detect and collect information from the environment, which is then used to control various home systems such as lighting …

Numerical Study On The Effect Of Seismic Vibrations On Oil Recovery Using A Pore-Model, Anoop Kanjirakat, Albertus Retnanto

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

A numerical study to evaluate the effectiveness of using seismic vibrations to improve oil recovery is reported. The effect of the characteristics of the seismic vibrations, such as displacement amplitude and frequency, are studied. The enhancement in oil recovery from a simple pore model subjected to constant inlet injection flow rates and seismic vibrations is investigated. It is observed that seismic recovery increases with an increase in displacement amplitude and vibration frequency. In addition, oil recovery is more pronounced with an increase in displacement amplitude than with an increase in vibration frequency. When the injection flow rates are higher, seismic …

Effectiveness Of Rubrics In Assessing Student Learning, Nakul Shetty K, Priyanka Desai Kakade, Anu Shaju Areeckal

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

COVID-19 has forced educators across the world to switch to e-learning. However, online assessment platforms are not widely employed, and traditional assessment methods persist. There is a lack of appropriate feedback provided to students and negligible scope for students’ self-assessment of their learning. This can be rectified by employing e-rubrics for assessment by examiners as well as by students for self-assessment of their performance. We propose a case study investigating the effectiveness of a well-structured analytical rubric for assessment by examiners, as well as by students for self-assessment.

Design And Simulation Of A Shunt Active Power Filter For Harmonic Mitigation, D G Wehby, R. C. Mala Dr Dec 2021

Design And Simulation Of A Shunt Active Power Filter For Harmonic Mitigation, D G Wehby, R. C. Mala Dr

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

The aim of this paper is to present the design process of a shunt active filter (SAF) in power systems and to highlight its importance in mitigating harmonics. The huge widespread of non-linear loads is rendering the source currents non-sinusoidal and thus producing harmful harmonics. In order to appreciate the effect of SAFs in power systems, a problem is adopted in which a non-linear load is present. The system is then modelled, and MATLAB Simulink simulations are carried on to highlight the undesirable presence of harmonics without the filter being installed and to showcase the power of the SAF in …

Development Of Novel Peptide-Doxorubicin Conjugates For Targeting Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Azam Saghaeidehkordi

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive and difficult to treat subtype of breast cancer. Chemotherapy is an active treatment option in combination with other treatments; however, the side effects limit the effective therapeutic dose. To selectively target the cancer cells, I have synthesized three peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs) to specifically target the TNBC cells. The first PDC contains peptide 18-4 with an additional cysteine in the N-terminal (NH2- CWxEAAYQrFL-CONH2) linked to aldoxorubicin (Aldox), a modified version of a common chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (Dox). The cytotoxicity of the PDC and free Dox (positive control) were assessed against MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468, and …

Reflex Anuria: A Complication Of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, Mohamed Fayed, Gargi Banerjee, Danni Feng, Irene Chen

Anesthesiology Articles

Reflex anuria (RA) is a rare cause of abrupt reduction of urine output following trauma, irritation, or painful stimuli to the kidneys, ureters, or surrounding organs. The mechanism of RA is a reflex spasm of both ureters and/or renal arterioles. It is a well-documented complication of colorectal surgeries and gynecological surgeries which involve placement of a ureteric stent for ureteric identification and prevention of injury. RA and post-renal obstruction can both be complications of intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients who are undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis. HIPEC procedure can lead to inflammation of the entire abdomen, …

Anesthesiology Articles

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (FSS) is an exceedingly rare congenital disorder with an unspecified prevalence. FSS is caused by a mutation in the embryonic skeletal muscle myosin heavy chain 3 gene. Patients may have facial abnormalities that put them at risk of difficult airway intubation. These facial abnormalities include micrognathia, macroglossia, high-arched palate, prominent forehead, and mid-face hypoplasia. Additionally, skeletal abnormalities such as joint contractures, scoliosis with resultant restrictive lung disease, and camptodactyly (bent fingers) can be noted. These features played an important role in the anesthetic management of our FSS patient. Perioperative planning and optimization were crucial in her anesthetic management …
