The Effect Of Door Opening On Air-Mixing In A Positively Pressurized Room: Implications For Operating Room Air Management During The Covid Outbreak, Arup Bhattacharya, Ali Ghahramani, Ehsan Mousavi

Faculty Publications

The effect of the built environment on the predominant indoor airflow patterns is significant. To protect the healthcare workers at the front line from the outbreak of COVID − 19, it is necessary to understand the transmission dynamics of the virus, which has been shown to depend on indoor airflow patterns. In hospital operating rooms (ORs), design requirements pose a unique challenge as the positive pressure in the OR can facilitate virus spread into adjacent spaces, shall a COVID-positive patient require a surgical procedure. Moreover, the turbulent vortexes from door motions could independently increase the probability of virus escape from …

Exploring Thermal State In Mixed Immersive Virtual Environments, Sanaz Saeidi, Girish Rentala, Tracey Rizzuto, Tianzhen Hong, Neil Johannsen, Yimin Zhu

Faculty Publications

Combining immersive virtual environment (IVE) with a controlled environment is a potential solution for analyzing human thermal experience during building design. Existing studies in this field have not adequately analyzed scenarios involving stabilized comfortable and uncomfortable temperature conditions using both thermal state votes and physiological responses, or the influence of the seasons. By combining IVE with a climate chamber, called mixed IVE (MIVE) in this study, experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that participants' virtual experience did not significantly alter their thermal experience compared to their in-situ experience. Response variables were the control temperature distribution, the thermal state vote …

The Truth About Brain Cells: Is Adult Neurogenesis Possible?, Ekene Nnagha, Queen-Helen Egbai, Ahtesham Khizar

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Brain cells regeneration involves renewal and repair of neurons and other cells in the brain, with restoration of their functions. Although this phenomenon was thought to end in early childhood, research has proven that adult neurogenesis is highly possible with some limitations. Regeneration of axons in the central nervous system is very slow and more complicated than neuronal regeneration, especially regeneration of peripheral nerves. Brain cell regeneration in the adult brain can help in recovery of damaged brain cells and correct cellular and brain tissue dysfunction that are commonly seen in some neurological disorders such as Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury …

A Human-Centric System For Symbolic Reasoning About Code, Megan Fowler Dec 2021

A Human-Centric System For Symbolic Reasoning About Code, Megan Fowler

All Dissertations

While testing and tracing on specific input values are useful starting points for students to understand program behavior, ultimately students need to be able to reason rigorously and logically about the correctness of their code on all inputs without having to run the code. Symbolic reasoning is reasoning abstractly about code using arbitrary symbolic input values, as opposed to specific concrete inputs.

The overarching goal of this research is to help students learn symbolic reasoning, beginning with code containing simple assertions as a foundation and proceeding to code involving data abstractions and loop invariants. Toward achieving this goal, this research …

Active Compensation Of Radiation Effects On Optical Fibers For Sensing Applications, Sohel Rana, Austin Fleming, Nirmala Kandadai, Harish Subbaraman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Neutron and gamma irradiation is known to compact silica, resulting in macroscopic changes in refractive index (RI) and geometric structure. The change in RI and linear compaction in a radiation environment is caused by three well-known mechanisms: (i) radiation-induced attenuation (RIA), (ii) radiation-induced compaction (RIC), and (iii) radiation-induced emission (RIE). These macroscopic changes induce errors in monitoring physical parameters such as temperature, pressure, and strain in optical fiber-based sensors, which limit their application in radiation environments. We present a cascaded Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) technique to measure macroscopic properties, such as radiation-induced change in RI and length compaction in real time …

A Multi-Dimensional Child-Langmuir Law For Any Diode Geometry, N. R. Sree Harsha, Marcus Pearlman, Jim Browning, Allen L. Garner Dec 2021

A Multi-Dimensional Child-Langmuir Law For Any Diode Geometry, N. R. Sree Harsha, Marcus Pearlman, Jim Browning, Allen L. Garner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

While prior theoretical studies of multi-dimensional space-charge limited current (SCLC) assumed emission from a small patch on infinite electrodes, none have considered emission from an entire finite electrode. In this paper, we apply variational calculus (VC) and conformal mapping, which have previously been used to derive analytic solutions for SCLC density (SCLCD) for nonplanar one-dimensional geometries, to obtain mathematical relationships for any multi-dimensional macroscopic diode with finite cathode and anode. We first derive a universal mathematical relationship between space-charge limited potential and vacuum potential for any diode and apply this technique to determine SCLCD for an eccentric spherical diode. We …

Attenuation Of Several Common Building Materials: Millimeter-Wave Frequency Bands 28, 73, And 91 Ghz, Mahfuza Khatun, Changyu Guo, Hani Mehrpouyan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Future cellular systems will make use of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency bands. Many users in these bands are located indoors, i.e., inside buildings, homes, and offices. The typical building material attenuations in these high-frequency ranges are of interest for link budget calculations. In this article, we report on a collaborative measurement campaign to find the attenuation of several typical building materials in three potential mm-wave bands (28, 73, and 91 GHz). Using directional antennas, we took multiple measurements at multiple locations using narrow-band and wideband signals and averaged out residual small-scale fading effects. The materials include clear glass, drywall (plasterboard), plywood, …

Lorentz Violations And The Casimir Effect, Samuel G. Christensen Dec 2021

Lorentz Violations And The Casimir Effect, Samuel G. Christensen

Physics

The background and calculation for the corrections to the Casimir Energy stored on parallel conducting plates due to minimal violations of Lorentz invariance are presented as a test of the Standard Model. A direction-dependent photon dispersion relation using operators of dimension 4 and higher is used in the calculation of the spacetime anisotropy correction terms to the Casimir energy. The calculation includes discussion of Riemann zeta function regularization and its equivalence to Euler-Maclaurin sum-integral formulas in a Casimir effect calculation. The two plate geometry result is mapped onto a one plate and sphere geometry to cater to modern precision tests …

Rigid Aggregation Of Inclusions Embedded In Quasi 2d Fluids, Natalie Xochitl Ryan Dec 2021

Rigid Aggregation Of Inclusions Embedded In Quasi 2d Fluids, Natalie Xochitl Ryan

Physics

Diffusion is a transport process common in several biological systems. In this process particles of different species mix together through random (stochastic) motion at molecular length scales. Diffusion in fluids is unique as the coupling of the flow and fluid have been found to produce giant concentration fluctuations. The molecular length scale of these concentration fluctuations are magnitudes larger than the movement of the particles themselves, earning them the title “giant”. The diffusion of particles in bio-membranes displays a combination of 2D and 3D hydrodynamic properties; the movements of the particles are restricted to the plane of the membrane and …

Mail Ballot Signature Rejections: Household Members Signing Each Other's Ballots, Craig Wilding Dec 2021

Mail Ballot Signature Rejections: Household Members Signing Each Other's Ballots, Craig Wilding

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Election administrators anecdotally mention that many ballots get signed by someone else in the household, such as the husband signing the wife's ballot. If household members are signing each other's ballots mistakenly, then there should be a rise in mismatched signatures as the number of people in the household increases. By matching household addresses of registered voters and the addresses that ballots were mailed to from the 2020 Florida general election, the study found that the probability of a signature mismatch did increase as the number of household members increased. While the data showed that black and Hispanic households have …

Using A Data Based Coaching Model To Support Novice Teachers In Inclusive Classrooms, Timara Davis Dec 2021

Using A Data Based Coaching Model To Support Novice Teachers In Inclusive Classrooms, Timara Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education classroom has changed over time. Teachers in inclusive classrooms need the skills to teach all students, including students with disabilities. The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD; 2019) reported in a survey of over 1500 general education teachers, only 17% noted they were well prepared to teach students with disabilities. A gap of in content knowledge exists between general and special education teacher preparation (Fonte et al., 2017) and the outcomes of students depends on the knowledge of the teacher (Burroughs et al, 2019). Lack of preparation of general education …

Distributed And Optimal State Estimation For Heterogeneous Dynamic Systems Operating Within A Strongly Connected Network, Matthew Howard Dec 2021

Distributed And Optimal State Estimation For Heterogeneous Dynamic Systems Operating Within A Strongly Connected Network, Matthew Howard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation is aimed at developing optimal and distributed state estimation algorithms for a team of cooperating nodes with the goal of improving accuracy through local sharing of relevant information. The nodes are assumed to be individually equipped with heterogeneous sensors for measuring a common target which can be dynamic and time-varying. Additionally, the nodes are assumed to be connected through a dynamically changing communication network modeled as a sequence of strongly connected digraphs allowing for local communication and distributed interactions. Using the data sharing afforded by the communication network, a weighted average state estimate consensus can be found across …

Drones And Civilians: Emerging Evidence Of The Terrorizing Effects Of The U.S. Drone Programs, Keenan, Patrick J. Dec 2021

Drones And Civilians: Emerging Evidence Of The Terrorizing Effects Of The U.S. Drone Programs, Keenan, Patrick J.

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

The Biden Administration, in one of its first consequential foreign policy decisions, announced that it would undertake a comprehensive review of the United States drone program. Officials promised that this review would consider all available evidence. This article shows that the U.S. drone program violates international law because of the ways it terrorizes civilian populations. U.S. officials from both parties have argued that drones are an effective part of the U.S. counterterrorism strategy. However, effectiveness is not the legal standard. The law requires that the program not unduly harm civilians. For as long as the U.S. has been using drones, …
