Complexity, Resources And Text Borrowing In State Legislatures, Eric Hansen, Joshua M. Jansa
Complexity, Resources And Text Borrowing In State Legislatures, Eric Hansen, Joshua M. Jansa
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Do states copy or reinvent language from complex policies as they diffuse, and does this depend on legislative resources? We argue that states will more frequently reinvent more complex policies, but that states with high-resource legislatures will reinvent more than their low-resource counterparts for more complex policies. We test the theory using the bill texts from 18 policies that diffused across the 50 states from 1983-2014, measuring reinvention and complexity using text analysis tools. In line with expectations, we find that complex policies are reinvented more than simple policies and that high-resource legislatures reinvent bills more than low-resource legislatures on …
A Proposed Study To Explore The Relationships Of Methionine Restriction, The Mitochondrial Upr, And Animal Lifespan Determination, Joanne Mai
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The determination of chronological age is complex and can be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Mitochondria, essential organelles that generate the vast amount of cellular energy, are closely associated with the aging process. While many studies have been performed, we still lack a complete understanding of how animal lifespan is determined. In the following research proposal, a strategy is outlined to uncover the mechanism of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) and extended lifespan resulting from restriction of the amino acid methionine. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and a forward genetic screening strategy will be used to identify …

The Impact Of Developmental Coordination Disorder, Irissa Le
The Impact Of Developmental Coordination Disorder, Irissa Le
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Development Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the performance of common, everyday tasks in children due to a delay in the development of motor skills. Oftentimes, parents of these children express concern about the limited number of resources available. To further understand what kind of support children with DCD may need, questionnaire responses of parents with DCD children in the US were documented. A survey was prepared through a survey software program called QuestionPro for the parents participating in Impact for DCD – USA. In total, there were 217 surveys completed. It was found that most children …

Collected Data And Research Into Turtle Populations In The Fort Worth Area, My Dung Nguyen
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The turtle population within Fort Worth has been observed to be in danger. Turtles of all species were washing up on lakes and rivers deceased or incapacitated, often diseased and lacking any sense of innate self-preservation that would otherwise be present in the species. The research conducted aimed to trap and track the turtle population using Passive Integrated Transponders, or PITs. These techniques were utilized to further solidify any potential new disease outbreak or trend in turtle deaths so that further action could be taken in the future. The turtles were each measured for circumference, weight, and sex while the …

Development Of Methodology And Software To Ensure The Quality Performance Of The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment High Voltage Field Cage, Archit Jaiswal
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is the U.S. flagship experiment being designed to study the characteristics of neutrinos which make up a quarter of the fundamental particle map. These subatomic particles help physicists understand the fundamental constituents of matter in the universe. In DUNE, neutrino interactions will be captured inside the active volume of the time projection chamber (TPC) using liquid argon (LAr) as the medium. The DUNE detector will be built using various parts assembled according to the proposed design which enables accomplishing the precision measurements for the underlying physics goals. The detector is constructed by assembling various …
A Practical Moral Theory The Failed State Of Normative Ethics, Gage Martinez
A Practical Moral Theory The Failed State Of Normative Ethics, Gage Martinez
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Normative ethics can be described as the investigation into how one ought to act, morally speaking. The state of contemporary normative ethics is, essentially, a split between consequentialist (the idea that things are morally right or wrong based on their consequence) and non-consequentialist thought. Yet in practice, no one seems to be able to live by these moral theories, and I argue that it would be bizarre to do so as well. I examine reasons to believe that neither theory provides a complete account of real moral life, and how they fail at being prescriptive in practice. I provide a …
Search For Low Mass Dark Matter Using Leptophilic Gauge Boson Model In Neutrino Experiments: Miniboone And Dune, Gajendra Gurung
Search For Low Mass Dark Matter Using Leptophilic Gauge Boson Model In Neutrino Experiments: Miniboone And Dune, Gajendra Gurung
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Dark Matter (DM) is a form of matter that makes about 25% of the universe as indicated by cosmological evidence, like weak gravitational lensing, cosmic microwave background, rotation of spiral galaxies, etc. Despite its abundance, DM limitedly interacts with light or normal matter, thus, it is difficult to study and d etect. In search of DM, we go beyond the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics by introducing models with particles that only interact weakly with known SM particles. We study different models and search for signatures of such particles in the proton dump mode of neutrino experiments, such as …

Aerodynamics is a very important factor while designing a racecar. Slight changes in the profile of the body could be the difference between winning and losing a race. In this study, the wing designed for the Global Electric Vehicle Challenge by Everest Engineering, a student team from the University of Texas at Arlington, is simulated to analyze its aerodynamic properties. The simulation is done on a single element wing with varying angles of attack and height from the ground. The Solid model is prepared in solid works and the computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed through ANSYS Fluent. The main …
Personality Assessment In Cloned Equines, Alexis Erickson
Personality Assessment In Cloned Equines, Alexis Erickson
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The nature versus nurture debate of personality has been widely researched, yet it has seldom used cloned animals. Since cloned animals are genetically identical to their donors, this avenue of research provides a unique opportunity to understand the genetic and environmental factors of personality. To explore these influences of personality, a donor polo pony and her cloned offspring were analyzed. The trainers of the horses rated each horse based on its personality traits and physical characteristics. A positive correlation was found between the personality of the donor horse and her cloned offspring. Moreover, the personality of the donor positively predicted …

Image Segmentation Application For Efficient 3d Reconstruction Of A Hypertrophic Heart, Shiska Raut
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic condition that causes abnormal thickening of myocardium leading to obstruction of blood flow to the left ventricle outflow tract. To restore adequate blood flow, Septal Myectomy, an open-heart surgery is carried out. Creating a 3D model of the diseased heart using CT scans enables surgeons to visualize the degree of obstruction and develop a surgical plan with minimized risk. To decrease the total time required for 3D reconstruction (about 9.5 – 160 hours) and increase model accuracy, an image segmentation application was developed. The purpose of the application is to decrease the total time …
Parameter Estimation And Sensitivity Analysis Through Mathematical Modeling Of Colon Cancer, Achyuth Manoj
Parameter Estimation And Sensitivity Analysis Through Mathematical Modeling Of Colon Cancer, Achyuth Manoj
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
We formulated a new and efficient method to propose a personalized treatment platform for colorectal cancer. A mathematical model of colon cancer was used and is comprised of a system of differential equations, which model various cell dynamics. The dynamics are dependent on patient-specific parameters that are unknown which we estimate given patient data in form of cell measurements. We approached this estimation as an inverse problem based on an optimization framework and developed computational optimization techniques created on non-linear conjugate gradient methods to solve for the optimal set of parameters for a specific patient. These optimal parameters are then …

The Effects Of Maternal Oral Health On Pregnancy And Child Tooth Development, Warda Wyne
2021 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The impact of oral health is something that is often overlooked, especially during pregnancy. Tooth development occurs during the first three months of pregnancy, a fact that not a lot of pregnant women are aware of. To further understand the implications that poor oral health can have on pregnancy and child tooth development, two different studies were conducted. The first study involved a questionnaire given to pregnant women asking them to rank their dental anxiety on a scale of not anxious (1) to phobic (5). Following this, dental history for all their children was recorded and compared to the questionnaire …

Stress As A Contributing Factor For Pediatric Obesity: Literature Review And Internship Experience, Jessica Handley
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
This article is an examination of how stress drives diet and physical activity behaviors that contribute to pediatric obesity in the United States. An increasing rate of childhood obesity is being reported in the United States and therefore a multitude of studies and reviews have been conducted on the topic. This review of the literature systematically analyzes how stress, diet, and physical activity behaviors contribute to this rising rate of pediatric obesity. An analysis of the chosen articles for review indicates that stress and its counterpart (resilience) tend to be driving forces in how American children and adolescents participate in …
Dynamic Mechanical Behaviors Of Nacre-Inspired Graphene-Polymer Nanocomposites Depending On Internal Nanostructures, Cho Chun Chiang
Dynamic Mechanical Behaviors Of Nacre-Inspired Graphene-Polymer Nanocomposites Depending On Internal Nanostructures, Cho Chun Chiang
All Theses
Nacre, a natural nanocomposite with a brick-and-mortar structure existing in the inner layer of mollusk shells, has been shown to optimize strength and toughness along the laminae (in-plane) direction. However, such natural materials more often experience impact load in the direction perpendicular to the layers (i.e., out-of-plane direction) from predators. The dynamic responses and deformation mechanisms of layered structures under impact load in the out-of-plane direction have been much less analyzed. The optimal design of protective material systems by leveraging the bioinspired structure has not yet been achieved. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the dynamic mechanical …

New Experience: An Ethnographic Study Of Students Who Transfer From A Low-Performing Public School District To A Better-Performing Public School District In Missouri, Yolanda J. Campbell
Dissertations
School districts in Missouri are responsible for public K-12 education and must be accredited to educate children. As a result, there is an evoking interest, demanding attention in Missouri public schools' quality and the students who transfer from unaccredited, critically low-performing schools to accredited, significantly betterperforming schools. These students have a higher risk of failing academically or dropping out of school and transitioning successfully into adulthood. Therefore, through this study, students, parents/guardians, and teachers tell their stories to empower the public to work together to raise all students' achievement in school, close the poverty and opportunity gap in education, and …

Checkerboard Of Interests: Native American Tribes And The Politics Of Land Tenure Reform, Anika Manuel
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
People have long disputed over the financial system constructed for indigenous communities and their resulting economic rights within U.S. native reservations. Indigenous tribes themselves remain split concerning the state of their tribal economies. Although scholars have extensively researched the historical component regarding the construction of the financial system we see in place today, very few have focused on the politics and rationale behind certain policy positions of relevant actors in modern-day society. In an attempt to fill this gap, this research paper will focus on answering two key questions: How has public policy shaped the economic and property rights of …

Physics Dissertations - Archive
The NEXT collaboration is developing a sequence of high pressure xenon gas time projection chambers with the aim of creating a ton-scale, very low background neutrinoless double beta decay search. Finding evidence of neutrinoless double beta decay would give insight into the origins of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, the smallness of neutrino mass, and the symmetry structure of the Standard Model. My research involves addressing critical challenges on the path to realization of high pressure xenon gas detectors for ton-scale, very low background neutrinoless double beta decay searches. While most aspects of this technology are easily scalable, some …

Socialismo Mulato: Soviet Fascination With Race In Cuba, Damaris Puñales-Alpízar
PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association
In the Soviet imaginary, the Cuban mulato represented not only an exotic other but also the realization of another kind of socialism, possible in other conditions and at other coordinates, (almost) far from Soviet reach. In general terms, Cubans came to fulfill a multilevel imaginary aspiration of Soviet identity related to Black and exploited people, Latin America, the United States, and the dissemination of the socialist ideology around the world. The Soviet fascination with, commitment to, and admiration for people of color was reinforced in this case by the added bonus that Cubans were comrades from a socialist island just …
