Late Ordovician Climate Change And Extinctions Driven By Elevated Volcanic Nutrient Supply, Jack Longman, Benjamin J.W. Mills, Hayley R. Manners, Thomas M. Gernon, Martin R. Palmer
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Late Ordovician (~459–444 million years ago) was characterized by global cooling, glaciation and severe mass extinction. These events may have been driven by increased delivery of the nutrient phosphorus (P) to the ocean and associated increases in marine productivity, but it is not clear why this occurred in the two pulses identified in the geological record. We link both cooling phases—and the extinction—to volcanic eruptions through marine deposition of nutrient-rich ash and the weathering of terrestrially emplaced ash and lava. We then reconstruct the influence of Late Ordovician volcanic P delivery on the marine system by coupling an estimate …

Section 24(2) In The Trial Courts: An Empirical Analysis Of The Legal And Non-Legal Determinants Of Excluding Unconstitutionally Obtained Evidence In Canada, Steven Penney, Moin Yahya
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This empirical study explores the legal and non-legal factors influencing trial judges’ decisions to admit or exclude illegally obtained evidence under section 24(2) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Mining an original dataset of 1,472 reported decisions from 2013–2018, we found little evidence that they are affected by judges’ gender or partisan ideology. We did find, in contrast, that they are substantially influenced by judges’ previous professional backgrounds: Former criminal defence lawyers are more likely to exclude evidence than former non-criminal practitioners, who are in turn more likely to exclude evidence than former prosecutors. We also found significant …

Black Voices Matter Too: Counter-Narrating Smithers V The Queen, Amar Khoday
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article presents a legal history and counter-narrative of the Supreme Court of Canada’s unanimous 1977 decision in Smithers v The Queen. Smithers is a criminal law case that focused largely on the issue of causation and is likely taught in most if not all Canadian law faculties annually. The case arose out of a fight following a midget league hockey game where one of the combatants died. In constructing its brief narrative of the facts, the Court drastically understated the racial dynamics that were in play during the game which prompted Paul Smithers, a Black and white biracial teenager …
Positive Charter Rights: When Can We Open The “Door?”, Michael Da Silva
Positive Charter Rights: When Can We Open The “Door?”, Michael Da Silva
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Whether the Supreme Court of Canada can and should recognize so-called “positive” rights (viz., rights that require the performance of certain actions, possibly including the provision of goods, by the government) under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms remains contentious. Binding Supreme Court precedent states that there are no positive Charter rights—at least under sections 7, 12, and 15, under which demands for positive action are most controversially raised—but positive aspects of Charter rights could be recognized in the future. Yet the circumstances under which such recognition would be appropriate remain opaque. This work suggests that the law of …

Smart Cities In Canada: Digital Dreams, Corporate Designs Edited By Mariana Valverde And Alexandra Flynn, Matt Malone
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Canada received an early and important education in smart cities but has been slow to distill the lessons to be learned from it. The challenge lies in conducting an objective post-mortem of the collapse of Sidewalk Toronto, a joint venture between Alphabet subsidiary Sidewalk Labs and tri-level government entity Waterfront Toronto. The latter was originally established in 2001 to develop a site south of the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto. The site, known as Quayside, had languished in development hell for decades. Originally purposed as part of a possible bid by Toronto for the 2008 Summer Olympics, the site had continued …

Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto By Kevin M. Gannon, Fenner L. Stewart
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Kevin Gannon's Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto (“Radical Hope”) is a call for all of us who teach in higher education to realize the full extent of our opportunity to improve the lives of others. He argues that by inspiring our students to develop their practice of learning, we not only help them to succeed in school, but throughout their lives.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Libraries may soon be able to establish and manage their own data centres. This paradigm would allow libraries to control the apps and data stores that include sensitive and private information about their users' personal and financial information. The provisioning and management of infrastructure for a Web-based digital library present several complicated difficulties for library administrators. In this article, we address the challenges that digital libraries confront, and the efforts being made to solve those challenges. Infrastructure virtualization and cloud Environment are incredibly enticing options, but they are being challenged by the expansion of the indexed document collection, the addition …

A History Of Law In Canada, Volume One: Beginnings To 1866 By Philip Girard, Jim Phillips & R. Blake Brown, Shelley A. M. Gavigan
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This is a book that every student of Canadian law should read in the first month of law school, before the smoke of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms gets in their eyes and they succumb to the notion that Canadian law really began in 1982. The smoke that blurred the eyes of previous generations of law students carried the message that law arrived in Canada in whatever year English law had been deemed to be received in British North America. With this first volume, A History of Law in Canada Volume One: Beginnings to 1866, and the anticipated publication …

The 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase-like (OGDHL) protein is a rate-limiting enzyme in the Krebs cycle that plays a pivotal role in mitochondrial metabolism. OGDHL expression is restricted mainly to the brain in humans. Here, we report nine individuals from eight unrelated families carrying bi-allelic variants in OGDHL with a range of neurological and neurodevelopmental phenotypes including epilepsy, hearing loss, visual impairment, gait ataxia, microcephaly, and hypoplastic corpus callosum. The variants include three homozygous missense variants (p.Pro852Ala, p.Arg244Trp, and p.Arg299Gly), three compound heterozygous single-nucleotide variants (p.Arg673Gln/p.Val488Val, p.Phe734Ser/p.Ala327Val, and p.Trp220Cys/p.Asp491Val), one homozygous frameshift variant (p.Cys553Leufs∗16), and one homozygous stop-gain variant (p.Arg440Ter). Fermentation And Cell Wall Degradation In Guineagrass And Italian Ryegrass Silages, Mitsuhiro Niimi, O. Kawamura
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) was ensiled at the room temperature and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) was ensiled at the room temperature and at 30 under the laboratory conditions. As a result, the acetic acid silage was made from Guineagrass and the lactic acid silages were made from Italian ryegrass. The loss of cell wall components during ensiling was the most in hemicellulose followed by NDF, but those of cellulose and AD-lignin were slight. In the hemicellulosic monosaccharides, the loss of hexose (galactose and glucose) was relatively high and that of pentose (arabinose and xylose) was relatively low …

Influence Of Additive Aiv-2000 And Pre-Wilted Big Bale On Silage Quality, Animal Performance And Rumen Metabolism, Jonas Jatkauskas, V. Vrotniakienė
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Silage treatment with AIV-2000 or making of silage big bales resulted in a higher level of lactic acid and organic matter digestibilities and reduced concentrations of butyric acid and ammonia-N. Feeding AIV-2000 treated and big bale silages increased weight gains of young fattening bulls by, respectively, 5.44 and 6.77% in comparison with the ordinary made silage. AIV-2000 treated and big bale silages affected microflora activity in the rumen. Infusoria count was higher by 13.5 and 30.34% (P < 0.05), VFA concentration increased by 0.39 and 8.45%, the pH value decreased by 0.05 and 0.1 unit, the content of total nitrogen was by 14.67 and 18.73 mg/100 ml, protein nitrogen by 14.12 and 16.63 mg/100 ml and non-protein nitrogen by 0.53 and 1.39 mg/100 ml higher, respectively for AIV-2000 and big bale groups in comparison with the control group.

Quality And Nutritive Value Of Mott Dwarf Elephantgrass Silage With Biological Additives, T. Clavero
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of cellulase enzymes and lactic acid bacteria on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and nutritive value of Pennisetum purpureum cv Mott silage. Five kinds of preparation were tested: sugar molasses (control); sugar molasses and cellulase enzymes; cellulase enzymes; concentrate of lactic acid bacteria and sugar molasses and concentrate of lactic acid bacteria. Significant differences (P< 0.05) were found in fermentation quality and chemical composition of control silage as compared to the biological additives treated silage. Addition of cellulase enzymes and lactic acid bacteria resulted in decrease of pH value, cell wall content and increased lactic acid concentration. The biological additives increased silage intake and daily live weight by growing steers.

Effects Of Different Additives On Silage Quality Of Napiergrass, Y. K. Cheng, C. S. Chen, P. W. Peng
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Objectives of this experiment were to determine the effects of different additives on silage quality of napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum). The cultivar of TLG2 with high water soluble carbohydrates was used to making silages added with or without 5 and 10% corn meal or wheat bran, and then treated with or without enzyme. Crude protein, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, water soluble carbohydrates and volatile fatty acid contents of silage were determined to evaluate silage quality. From the results, it showed that var.TLG2 could be making good silages without any additives but the dry matter was low. Adding …

Session 2.2 Water Under Climate Change: From Sustainable Management To Resilient Stewardship, Mary Sluder
The Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education
Sustainable water management under climate change is ill-recognized given its importance, and it is unclear which policy instrument is optimal in promoting it. COP26 hosted the first Water Pavilion, and among presenters and attendees of Pavilion events, I interviewed a sample with water policy and management expertise. I collected data on the effectiveness and applicability of using bottom-up economic policies for sustainable water management. It seems this approach may be beneficial in certain contexts, but participants and event hosts emphasized that resilience in water is also key. Perhaps it’s time we move beyond sustainability and management towards resilience and stewardship. …

Session 2.3 Burgess Shale Fossils In Yoho National Park, Rylee Sharkey, Krystal Tran, Martin Morales
The Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education
The Burgess Shale Fossils found in Yoho National Park are some of the oldest, most well-preserved, soft-bodies organisms ever found. These fossils provide valuable knowledge of Cambrian organisms and the origins of multicellular life. The construction of The Canadian Pacific Railway ultimately led to the discovery of these fossils by making the Kicking Horse Valley accessible to tourists, adventurers, and most importantly to our story, geologists. The railway can be seen as a vehicle of exploration, but for the First Nations peoples, it was a vehicle of exploitation that had harmed the natural environment and exploited their artifacts and resources. …

A Practical Application Of Self Psychology In Counseling, A. Jordan Wright
A Practical Application Of Self Psychology In Counseling, A. Jordan Wright
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Self psychology has undergone a significant evolution since it was initially developed and proposed by Heinz Kohut, including broadening conceptions of what purposes selfobjects can serve for individuals. Its application to counseling has been as an organizing framework and overarching theory of human development and psychopathology. The concept of selfobjects, however, has the potential to provide specific guidance and technique in micro-interactions within counseling. Individual moments within counseling present opportunities for a counselor to intervene, and self psychology can provide a deliberate decision-making tool for how to respond. Being deliberate in interventions throughout counseling has the potential to improve outcomes. …

Supervision Strategies To Facilitate Vicarious Post Traumatic Growth Among Trauma Counselors, Jennifer D. Deaton, Brooke Wymer, Ryan G. Carlson
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Counselors working with clients who have experienced trauma may encounter a range of indirect trauma responses (i.e., vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and/or secondary traumatic stress). Alternatively, counselors may experience positive affects such as living life more fully, treating others differently, or becoming more emotionally expressive in their relationships due to indirect trauma exposure. The latter experience is called vicarious post traumatic growth and has implications for more positive counselor functioning and better client outcomes. In this article, we review four enabling factors of vicarious post traumatic growth to provide supervision strategies to address indirect trauma; meaning making, social interests, social …

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
We surveyed 113 counselor educators to understand the structure of group counseling courses in CACREP-accredited programs and their self-reflections of teaching group counseling courses. Our focus included instructor characteristics, course content (didactic versus experiential), evaluation (content knowledge versus hands-on skills), supervision, and teaching strategies. The responses were a heterogeneous composition of instructor background, program structure, curriculum, and the setup of the experiential component. The comparison with the literature indicates a slight change, mainly in the use of technology and the experiential component, over the past decade. Based on the results, we identified the needs for future studies and made suggestions …

Integrating Vicarious Resilience Into Counselor Education Programs, Olivia T. Ngadjui
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
To support the retention of counselors in the field, suggestions influenced by a deficit lens caution and affirm the importance of preventative wellness to counselors while highlighting the impact related to the lack of attentiveness towards counselors’ well-being such as impairment, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout. The construct of vicarious resilience is a transformative lens of care (Hernandez-Wolfe, 2018). For counselors, this lens includes substantial benefits towards the counselor’s wellbeing when collaborating with empathy and care to reframe initial thinking surrounding the therapeutic relationship. This article consists of a conceptual framework for integrating vicarious resilience into counselor education as …

Counselor Trainees’ Personal Growth Through Interpersonal Experiential Growth Groups: An Instrumental Case Study, Yanhong Liu, Peitao Zhu, Alonzo D. Turner
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Following the instrumental case study design, we explored 14 counselors-in-training’s (CITs) personal growth within their semester-long experiential growth groups (EGGs). The study illuminated CITs’ multifaceted growth within three categories of intrapersonal growth, interpersonal growth, and group cohesiveness. Participants’ intrapersonal and interpersonal growth were closely intertwined and mutually activating. Participants’ self-reflection, emotional awareness, self-other reflexivity, and their interpersonal communication and attitudes were found to encompass a continuum of activities ranging from being broad/generic to specific/action-oriented. Findings provided insights for group training and future research.
