A Longitudinal Analysis Of Pathways To Computing Careers: Defining Broadening Participation In Computing (Bpc) Success With A Rearview Lens, Mercy Jaiyeola
Theses and Dissertations
Efforts to increase the participation of groups historically underrepresented in computing studies, and in the computing workforce, are well documented. It is a national effort with funding from a variety of sources being allocated to research in broadening participation in computing (BPC). Many of the BPC efforts are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) but as existing literature shows, the growth in representation of traditionally underrepresented minorities and women is not commensurate to the efforts and resources that have been directed toward this aim.
Instead of attempting to tackle the barriers to increasing representation, this dissertation research tackles the …
3d Shape Estimation Of Negative Obstacles Using Lidar Point Cloud Data, Viswadeep Lebakula
3d Shape Estimation Of Negative Obstacles Using Lidar Point Cloud Data, Viswadeep Lebakula
Theses and Dissertations
Obstacle detection and avoidance plays a crucial role in the autonomous navigation of unmanned ground vehicles (UGV). Information about the obstacles decreases as the distance between the UGV and obstacles increases. However, this information decreases much more rapidly for negative obstacles than for positive obstacles. UGV navigation becomes more challenging in off-road environments due to the higher probability of finding negative obstacles (e.g., potholes, ditches, trenches, etc.) compared with on-road environments. One approach to solve this problem is to avoid the candidate path with a negative obstacle, but in off-road environments avoiding negative obstacles in all situations is not possible. …

Nuclear Transparency From Quasi-Elastic $^{12}C(E,E'P)$ Scattering Reaction Up To $Q^2=14.2 ~(Gev/C)^{2}$ In Hall C At Jefferson Lab, Deepak Kumar Bhetuwal
Theses and Dissertations
Color Transparency $(CT)$ is a unique prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics $(QCD)$ where the final (and/or initial) state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear medium are suppressed for exclusive processes at high momentum transfers. While this phenomenon has been observed for mesons, there has never been a conclusive observation for baryons. A clear signal of $CT$ for baryons would be the first evidence of baryons fluctuating to a small size in the nucleus, and the onset would show the transition from nucleon-meson picture to quark-gluon degrees of freedom. The experiment $E1206107$, searching for the onset of $CT$ in protons was completed …

Dissection Of The Genetic Architecture Of Grain Quality In Rice, Shuai Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Rice is an important human staple food for over half of the world’s population. Amylose content (AC), gelatinization temperature (GT), grain protein content (GPC), percentage grain chalkiness (PGC), and mineral content are important parameters for evaluating rice quality, which attracts customers and breeders. Only limited genes or QTLs (OsAAP6, OsGluA2, OsASN1, Chalk5, OsHMA3, etc.) are reported regulating rice GPC, PGC, and mineral content due to the lack of genetic knowledge and molecular markers. To dissect the genetic architecture of rice grain quality regulation, genome wide association studies (GWAS) were performed using two populations …

Modeling The Ballistic Limit Of Fragment Simulating Projectiles Impacting A36 Mild Steel Spaced Armor Configurations, Daniel H. Rios-Estremera
Theses and Dissertations
Terminal ballistics study multivariate behavior and aftermath of projectile and target interactions. Tests and models are often based on monolithic armors, however, layered and spaced armors are common in real world applications. Such configurations add complexities that require research to understand their effects on terminal ballistics. The ballistic limit velocity (V50) represents the speed where armor perforation probability is 50%. It is used for quantitative comparison of protection capabilities for different armors. This research studied the V50 of spaced and layered A36 steel armors against fragment simulating projectiles (FSPs). Four methods for estimating armor V50 were evaluated and compared to …

Physiological Roles Of Selenoprotein H In Mice, Qingzhou Wang
Physiological Roles Of Selenoprotein H In Mice, Qingzhou Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Low-hierarchy selenoproteins are sensitive to selenium (Se) deficiency and are proposed to confer the protection of body Se against age- and development-related diseases. Selenoprotein H (SELENOH), a low-hierarchy selenoprotein, is greatly downregulated by both dietary Se deficiency and age. To explore physiological roles of SELENOH, Selenoh knockout mice were employed.
Segregation analyses demonstrated reduced frequencies of homozygotes and heterozygotes among the neonates of the breeding combinations of Selenoh+/- males vs. Selenoh+/- or Selenoh-/- females, demonstrating essential roles of SELENOH in embryogenesis. Litter sizes from these two breeding groups were comparable with control, suggesting a role of SELENOH …

Theses and Dissertations
1,2-Diazetidine is a four-membered ring heterocyclic compound which has two adjacent nitrogen atoms. However, the syntheses of C-unsubstituted 1,2-diazetidines are rarely reported in the literature. C-unsubstituted 1,2-diazetidines were synthesized through an operationally simple intermolecular vicinal disubstitution reaction between 1,2-dibromoethane and hydrazine with N-arylsulfonyl as the protecting group. Several different types of C-unsubstituted 1,2-diazetidines derivatives were synthesized with either two of the same or two different N-arylsulfonyl groups. The electronic and steric properties were analyzed using Raman spectroscopy and computational calculations. Then, several synthetic applications were demonstrated with 1,2-ditosyl-1,2-diazetidine (DTD). As a synthetic application, a nucleophilic ring-opening reaction of the diazetidine …

A Review Of Calcineurin Biophysics With Implications For Cardiac Physiology, Ryan B. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Calmodulin is a prevalent calcium sensing protein found in all cells. Three genes exist for calmodulin and all three of these genes encode for the exact same protein sequence. Recently mutations in the amino acid sequence of calmodulin have been identified in living human patients. Thus far, patients harboring these mutations in the calmodulin sequence have only displayed an altered cardiac related phenotype. Calcineurin is involved in many key physiological processes and its activity is regulated by calcium and calmodulin. In order to assess whether or not calcineurin contributes to calmodulinopathy (a pathological state arising from dysfunctional calmodulin), a comprehensive …

Theses and Dissertations
The fact that hydrogen is a clean and versatile fuel offers an attractive carbon-free source of energy and leverages the U.S. economy toward long-term sustainable economic growth. At an industrial scale, hydrogen production is mostly relying on methane steam reforming producing stoichiometric amounts of carbon oxides (CO and CO2), which imposes economic and environmental concerns. To mitigate the issue, we propose NH3 assisted anaerobic reforming of natural gas liquids (ethane and propane) as an alternative approach to produce COx free hydrogen. Here, in the first chapter, through comprehensive performance evaluation, characterization, and transient kinetic studies, it is shown that the …
