Dense tumor innervation is associated with enhanced cancer progression and poor prognosis. We observed innervation in breast, prostate, pancreatic, lung, liver, ovarian, and colon cancers. Defining innervation in high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) was a focus since sensory innervation was observed whereas the normal tissue contains predominantly sympathetic input. The origin, specific nerve type, and the mechanisms promoting innervation and driving nerve-cancer cell communications in ovarian cancer remain largely unknown. The technique of neuro-tracing enhances the study of tumor innervation by offering a means for identification and mapping of nerve sources that may directly and indirectly affect the tumor microenvironment. …

A Data-Driven Approach For The Investigation Of Microstructural Effects On The Effective Piezoelectric Responses Of Additively Manufactured Triply Periodic Bi-Continuous Piezocomposite, Wenhua Yang
Theses and Dissertations
A two-scale model consisting of ceramic grain scale and composite scale are developed to systematically evaluate the effects of microstructures (e.g., residual pores, grain size, texture) and geometry on the piezoelectric responses of the polarized triply periodic bi-continuous (TPC) piezocomposites. These TPC piezocomposites were fabricated by a recently developed additive manufacturing (AM) process named suspension-enclosing projection-stereolithography (SEPS) under different process conditions. In the model, the Fourier spectral iterative perturbation method (FSIPM) and the finite element method will be adopted for the calculation at the grain and composite scale, respectively. On the grain scale, a DL approach based on stacked generative …
For Civilization And Citizenship: Emancipation, Empire, And The Creation Of The Black Citizen-Soldier Tradition, Henry Ian Davis
For Civilization And Citizenship: Emancipation, Empire, And The Creation Of The Black Citizen-Soldier Tradition, Henry Ian Davis
Theses and Dissertations
For civilization and citizenship: emancipation, empire, and the creation of the black citizen-soldier tradition examines the origins and evolution of black military service and its relation to how black and white Americans understood citizenship from the Civil War Era to the First World War. This dissertation analyzes how different generations of black soldiers pursued full, civic citizenship through their military service and formed their own vision of citizenship rooted in military service and how the War Department sought to deal with the tensions created by a biracial Army. While it asserts that a separate, black citizen-soldier tradition linking service and …

Quantitative Stem: A Method For Measuring Temperature And Thickness Effects On Thermal Diffuse Scattering Using Stem/Eels, And For Testing Electron Scattering Models, Paul S. Minson
Theses and Dissertations
In the last two decades, advances in the dark field detectors and microscopes of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have inspired a resurgence of interest in quantitative STEM analysis. One promising avenue is the use of STEM as a nanothermometric probe. In this application, thermal diffuse scattering, captured by a CCD camera or an annular dark field detector, acts as an indirect measurement of the specimen temperature. One challenge with taking such a measurement is achieving adequate sensitivity to quantify a change in scattered electron signal on the order of 1% or less of the full electron beam. Another difficulty …

Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Fragmentations And The Total Synthesis Of Yaku'amide A And Its Simplified Analogues, Concordia Lo
Theses and Dissertations
The first project in this dissertation describes the use of microwave-promoted iminyl radical fragmentations to form functionalized nitriles. Nitrogen-centered radical chemistry is a useful tool to construct valuable C-N bonds commonly found in pharmaceuticals and biologically active molecules. Classically, these reactions require the use of toxic initiators and propagators. Iminyl radical chemistry has been gaining momentum as a means of avoiding these harsh conditions. This project utilizes the fragmentation of cyclic iminyl radicals via irradiation of O-phenyl oxime ethers to produce a synthetically useful nitrile tethered to an alkyl radical in the absence of metal catalysts and redox chemistry. The …

Accelerators, such as GPU, are a scarce resource in deep learning (DL). Effectively and efficiently sharing GPU leads to improved hardware utilization as well as user experiences, who may need to wait for hours to access GPU before a long training job is done. Spatial and temporal multitasking on GPU have been studied in the literature, but popular deep learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, lack the support of GPU sharing among multiple DL models, which are typically represented as computation graphs, heavily optimized by underlying DL libraries, and run on a complex pipeline spanning CPU and GPU. Our …

Deep Multi-Modal U-Net Fusion Methodology Of Infrared And Ultrasonic Images For Porosity Detection In Additive Manufacturing, Christian E. Zamiela
Deep Multi-Modal U-Net Fusion Methodology Of Infrared And Ultrasonic Images For Porosity Detection In Additive Manufacturing, Christian E. Zamiela
Theses and Dissertations
We developed a deep fusion methodology of non-destructive (NDT) in-situ infrared and ex- situ ultrasonic images for localization of porosity detection without compromising the integrity of printed components that aims to improve the Laser-based additive manufacturing (LBAM) process. A core challenge with LBAM is that lack of fusion between successive layers of printed metal can lead to porosity and abnormalities in the printed component. We developed a sensor fusion U-Net methodology that fills the gap in fusing in-situ thermal images with ex-situ ultrasonic images by employing a U-Net Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for feature extraction and two-dimensional object localization. We …

Modulation Of Effector Gene Expression In The Blood-Feeding Arthropods Cimex Lectularius Linnaeus, (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) And Aedes Albopictus Skuse, (Diptera: Culicidae), Travis C. Van Warmerdam
Theses and Dissertations
Hematophagy, or blood-feeding behavior, has independently evolved multiple times in the class Insecta and results in the transmission of vector-borne parasites, bacteria and viruses causing 17% of all infectious diseases and over 700,000 human deaths annually. One of the major challenges in studying the discrete mechanisms involved in host-response to hematophagy or the host seeking behavior of hematophagous insects, is the vast amount of signaling processes and genes that are inextricably tied to these interactions. These experiments used the clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated (Cas) and dsRNA knock-down technologies to examine mechanisms of immunological reactivity and host-seeking behavior. …

Evaluation Of The Utility And Performance Of An Autonomous Surface Vehicle For Mobile Monitoring Of Waterborne Biochemical Agents, Jessica Simmerman Wolfe
Evaluation Of The Utility And Performance Of An Autonomous Surface Vehicle For Mobile Monitoring Of Waterborne Biochemical Agents, Jessica Simmerman Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Real-time water quality monitoring is crucial due to land utilization increases which can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems from surface water runoff. Conventional monitoring methodologies are laborious, expensive, and spatio-temporally limited. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), equipped with sensors/instrumentation, serve as mobile sampling stations that reduce labor and enhance data resolution. However, ASV autopilot navigational accuracy is affected by environmental forces (wind, current, and waves) that can alter trajectories of planned paths and negatively affect spatio-temporal resolution of water quality data. This study demonstrated a commercially available solar powered ASV equipped with a multi-sensor payload ability to operate autonomously to accurately and …

Evaluation Of Hyperspectral Band Selection Techniques For Real-Time Applications, Samantha Butler
Theses and Dissertations
Processing hyperspectral image data can be computationally expensive and difficult to employ for real-time applications due to its extensive spatial and spectral information. Further, applications in which computational resources may be limited can be hindered by the volume of data that is common with airborne hyperspectral image data. This paper proposes utilizing band selection to down-select the number of spectral bands to consider for a given classification task such that classification can be done at the edge. Specifically, we consider the following state of the art band selection techniques: Fast Volume-Gradient-based Band Selection (VGBS), Improved Sparse Subspace Clustering (ISSC), Maximum-Variance …
Discrete Processing In Visual Perception, Marshall L. Green
Discrete Processing In Visual Perception, Marshall L. Green
Theses and Dissertations
Two very different classes of theoretical models have been proposed to explain visual perception. One class of models assume that there is a point at which we become consciously aware of a stimulus, known as a threshold. This threshold is the foundation of discrete process models all of which describe an all-or-none transition between the mental state of perceiving a stimulus and the state of not perceiving a stimulus. In contrast, the other class of models assume that mental states change continuously. These continuous models are founded in signal detection theory and the more contemporary models in Bayesian inference frameworks. …
