Multimodal Expertise Training For Writing Center Tutors, Erin E. A. O'Day
Multimodal Expertise Training For Writing Center Tutors, Erin E. A. O'Day
English Department Theses
As digital technology becomes more common on college campuses and multimodal compositions are assigned by more instructors, writing centers must incorporate support for multimodal projects into their tutoring. However, no method for training writing center tutors to understand the basic principles of multimodal compositions is currently available. This thesis, therefore, proposes a method for training multimodal expert tutors in writing centers which focuses on both the importance of rhetorical choices in communicating a message in different media and on the basic principles of design for four primary areas: visual, audio, video, and web design. Example tutor training handouts for these …
Henry D. Thoreau’S Color Red, Relationship To Nature, And Religious Imagery In Robert Frost’S “Rose Pogonias” And Other Poems, Jennifer Fry
Henry D. Thoreau’S Color Red, Relationship To Nature, And Religious Imagery In Robert Frost’S “Rose Pogonias” And Other Poems, Jennifer Fry
English Department Theses
In the estimation of contemporaries such as book critic Julian Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau sought to leave a legacy of influence behind him. He never saw such attention in his lifetime. Yet, he found a willing audience in Robert Frost, who began reading his works with gusto at the age of 22 and later listed Walden as one of his favorite books. Reading Frost’s own works reveals ample influence of Thoreau’s writings over Frost’s artistry—in terms of the color choices used, but also in advocating a certain view of nature, as well as the use of pagan imagery within his …
Developing Techniques For The Identification Of Non-Canonical Rna Pairing And Analysis Of Lc-Ms Datasets, Christopher Jurich
Developing Techniques For The Identification Of Non-Canonical Rna Pairing And Analysis Of Lc-Ms Datasets, Christopher Jurich
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Non-canonical pairing dynamics in ribonucleic acid (RNA) structureand statistical analysis of metabolomics liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) datasets are two difficult problems that stand as open challenges.
RNA folding algorithms are used across a variety of disciplines to predict structures when experimental elucidation techniques are inconvenient or impractical. Though successful and widely adopted, folding algorithms make simplifying assumptions for loop regions due to their complex interactions and associated difficulty with generating energy parameters for relevant non-canonical pairing interactions. Modeling assumptions and a lack of energy parameters for loops limit accuracy in these functional critical regions of RNA. This work describes …

Selling For The Social Good: A Commentary And Extension To Pedagogy Place, Shannon Cummins
Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications
This paper describes an adaptation of “Social Marketing, Consumer Behavior, and the SDGs” available from the Pedagogy Place website to an introductory sales class. The extension provides an example of how the structure of a macromarketing project can be adapted to every part of the marketing curriculum—even personal selling. The project details how sales skills can be developed using experiential learning while simultaneously providing an opportunity to discuss macromarketing principles and use sales techniques toward sustainability goals and societal good.
Racial Attitudes And Criminal Justice Policy, Francis T. Cullen, Leah C. Butler, Amanda Graham
Racial Attitudes And Criminal Justice Policy, Francis T. Cullen, Leah C. Butler, Amanda Graham
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Empirical research on public policy preferences must attend to Whites’ animus toward Blacks. For a quarter-century, studies have consistently found that Kinder and Sanders’s four-item measure of “racial resentment” is a robust predictor of almost every social and criminal justice policy opinion. Racial animus increases Whites’ opposition to social welfare policies that benefit Blacks and their support for punitive policies that disadvantage this “outgroup.” Any public opinion study that fails to include racial resentment risks omitted variable bias. Despite the continuing salience of out-group animus, recent scholarship, especially in political science, has highlighted other racial attitudes that can influence public …
The Future Harm Exception: Coercive Control As Serious Psychological Harm And The Challenge For Lawyers’ Ethics, Deanne Sowter
The Future Harm Exception: Coercive Control As Serious Psychological Harm And The Challenge For Lawyers’ Ethics, Deanne Sowter
Dalhousie Law Journal
Can a lawyer use the future harm exception to prevent her client from coercively controlling his former spouse? Lawyers are required to keep their clients’ secrets unless an exception applies. One of those exceptions is where there is a clear and imminent risk of serious bodily harm or death to an identifiable group or person. The exception provides that serious psychological harm constitutes serious bodily harm, but there is very little guidance as to what type of threat might meet the test. Coercive control is a type of family violence whereby an abusive spouse will use a pattern of tactics …
Covid-19, Human Rights And Public Health In Prisons: A Case Study Of Nova Scotia’S Experience During The First Wave Of The Pandemic, Adelina Iftene
Covid-19, Human Rights And Public Health In Prisons: A Case Study Of Nova Scotia’S Experience During The First Wave Of The Pandemic, Adelina Iftene
Dalhousie Law Journal
The importance of preventing outbreaks in prisons during a pandemic, such as COVID-19, cannot be overstated. The risk of the infection spreading rapidly once inside these institutions is much higher than in the community, due to the underlying vulnerabilities of prison populations and the congregated living nature of prisons. This article documents the Nova Scotia provincial prison system’s experience in dealing with COVID-19 during the first wave, including its uniquely swift decarceration efforts. One goal of this investigation is to identify a set of best practices that can help Canadian prisons systems with their short-term responses to crisis in a …

Kinematics Of Inter-Ply Interfaces In Composite Manufacturing, Sandeep Chava
Kinematics Of Inter-Ply Interfaces In Composite Manufacturing, Sandeep Chava
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The ubiquitous usage of polymer matrix composites in many applications demands a comprehensive understanding of composite interfaces and processing induced residual stresses, which critically affect both the manufacturing processes and the deformation mechanisms. Processing induced residual stresses are often responsible for causing warping, delamination, and dimensional instability in composite structures. This research includes new in-situ experimental approaches, cure cycle design, interface modification, and thermomechanical modeling for developing a fundamental understanding of the cure kinetics during composite manufacturing. Strains, ply-movement, and formation of defects are observed in-situ using digital image correlation (DIC) during the autoclave cure cycle for the first time. …
Numerical Study Of The Seiqr Model For Covid-19, Caitlin Holt
Numerical Study Of The Seiqr Model For Covid-19, Caitlin Holt
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In this research project, we used numerical methods to investigate trends in the susceptible, exposed, infectious, quarantined, recovered, closed cases and insusceptible populations for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. We used the SEIQR model containing seven ordinary differential equations, based on the SIR model for epidemics. An analytical solution was derived from a simplified version of the model, created by making various assumptions about the original model. Numerical solutions were generated for the first 100 days of 2021 using algorithms based on Euler's Method, Runge-Kutta Method, and Multistep Methods. Our goal is to show that numerical methods can help us …

Implementing Food Science-Based Instruction In Career Technical Education Courses, Jasmine D. Hendrix
Implementing Food Science-Based Instruction In Career Technical Education Courses, Jasmine D. Hendrix
Theses and Dissertations
Students are exposed to food concepts in agriculture-based career technical education (CTE) courses which provide a gateway for students to become more aware of food science career pathways. Professional development for Mississippi (MS) CTE teachers is needed to effectively implement food science-based instruction since there is not a food science curriculum framework adopted in MS. The objective of this study was to assess a food science professional development training for MS CTE teachers that would increase their self-perceived knowledge of food science, self-perceived ability to conduct food science skills, and their self-efficacy to implement food science-based instruction. Thirty-one teachers participated …
Methods Of Memorialization: Holocaust Commemoration In The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Kylee Bolinger
Methods Of Memorialization: Holocaust Commemoration In The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Kylee Bolinger
University Honors Theses
Memorials, both formal and informal, both private and public, have long participated in the pursuit to honor the victims of tragedy, disaster, or genocide. Memorial museums serve both to memorialize victims and to foster an environment conducive to reflection and education about these stories. Such memorial museums have especially made their mark after one of the most notable and devastating genocide events in history: the Holocaust in twentieth-century Europe. This thesis examines how memorialization methods utilized by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) make up the American interpretation of Vergangenheitsbewältigung, the concept typically applied to how Germans deal …
Uniting Non-Empirical And Semi-Empirical Density Functional Approximation Strategies Using Constraint-Based Regularization, Trine K. Quady
Uniting Non-Empirical And Semi-Empirical Density Functional Approximation Strategies Using Constraint-Based Regularization, Trine K. Quady
University Honors Theses
In this work, we present a general framework that unites the two primary strategies for constructing density functional approximations (DFAs): non-empirical (NE) constraint satisfaction and semi-empirical (SE) data-driven optimization. The proposed method employs B-splines--bell-shaped spline functions with compact support--to construct each inhomogeneity correction factor (ICF). This choice offers several distinct advantages over a polynomial basis by enabling explicit enforcement of linear and non-linear constraints as well as ICF smoothness using Tikhonov regularization and penalized B-splines (P-splines). As proof of concept, we use this approach to construct CASE21--a Constrained And Smoothed semi-Empirical global hybrid generalized gradient approximation that completely satisfies all …

Signatures Of A Quantum Griffiths Phase Close To An Electronic Nematic Quantum Phase Transition, Pascal Reiss, David Graf, Amir A. Haghighirad, Thomas Vojta, Amalia I. Coldea
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the vicinity of a quantum critical point, quenched disorder can lead to a quantum Griffiths phase, accompanied by an exotic power-law scaling with a continuously varying dynamical exponent that diverges in the zero-temperature limit. Here, we investigate a nematic quantum critical point in the iron-based superconductor FeSe0.89S0.11 using applied hydrostatic pressure. We report an unusual crossing of the magneto resistivity isotherms in the Non superconducting normal state that features a continuously varying dynamical exponent over a large temperature range. We interpret our results in terms of a quantum Griffiths phase caused by nematic islands that result from the local …
Media Consumption Effects On Climate Change Beliefs, Haley Penrod
Media Consumption Effects On Climate Change Beliefs, Haley Penrod
Honors College Theses
Climate change is in everyday conversation and on the platform for many elections. This issue has grown bigger to where action needs to be taken in order to counteract its effects. One way to examine this subject is through the media. Media allows for an outlet of communication between those with vital information and the public audience. This usage of media can be influential in informing people, as well as changing causation beliefs towards either side. Through this project, the question of how media consumption affects people’s climate change causation beliefs is examined. Using data provided through the 2016 American …

Has The Turning Point Been Missed? Exclusivity Payments Granted By Dominant Undertakings In The Light Of The Enforcement Priorities Guidance, Tomasz Krzyżewski
Has The Turning Point Been Missed? Exclusivity Payments Granted By Dominant Undertakings In The Light Of The Enforcement Priorities Guidance, Tomasz Krzyżewski
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
For many years, exclusivity payments and its specific type – loyalty rebates – were treated by the European Commission (Commission) as restrictions by object. This approach has been gradually revised towards a more effect-based reasoning. In the Guidance on the Commission’s enforcement priorities in applying Article 82 of the EC Treaty to abusive exclusionary conduct by dominant undertakings (Guidance), the Commission demonstrated its willingness to follow the so-called ‘economic approach’. In particular, the Commission announced that for price-based exclusionary conduct the so-called ‘as-efficient competitor’ test (AEC test) is going to be used. This article aims to verify whether the Commission …

Product Substitutability In Defining The Relevant Market And Expert Evidence: Comments On The Judgment Of The Polish Supreme Court Of 29 July 2020 (I Nsk 8/19), Rafał R. Wasilewski
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
In one of the court proceedings concerning a cassation appeal, brought against the decision of the President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK), the Polish Supreme Court expressed in its judgment of 29 July 2020 (I NSK 8/19) a view on the role of expert evidence in the definition of the relevant market, and more specifically, in the determination of product substitutability. By dismissing the corporate applicant’s cassation appeal, the Court stated that admission of expert evidence was not necessary, given that the substitutability of products is decided mainly by customer adoption and not their chemical composition. …
