First Record Of Fungal Diversity In The Tropical And Warm-Temperate Middle Miocene Climate Optimum Forests Of Eurasia, Jennifer M.K. O'Keefe Dec 2021

First Record Of Fungal Diversity In The Tropical And Warm-Temperate Middle Miocene Climate Optimum Forests Of Eurasia, Jennifer M.K. O'Keefe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) was the warmest interval of the last 23 million years and is one of the best analogs for proposed future climate change scenarios. Fungi play a key role in the terrestrial carbon cycle as dominant decomposers of plant debris, and through their interactions with plants and other organisms as symbionts, parasites, and endobionts. Thus, their study in the fossil record, especially during the MMCO, is essential to better understand biodiversity changes and terrestrial carbon cycle dynamics in past analogous environments, as well as to model future ecological and climatic scenarios. The fossil record also …

Extinguishing The Fuse Of Teacher Burnout, Elizabeth Pfeifle Dec 2021

Extinguishing The Fuse Of Teacher Burnout, Elizabeth Pfeifle

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

In the 1970’s, Herbert Freudenberger, defined teacher burnout as being a state of exhaustion or displeasure brought on by professional relationships that failed to generate predictable rewards. Teacher burnout is defined by three themes, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment.

Some indications of teacher burnout consist of sleeping and fatigue issues, constantly neglecting or having difficulties with focusing, weight and appetite concerns, and depression and anxiety (Tapp, 2021). In 2021, an evaluation was given to teachers highlighting how they are feeling and if they feel like leaving or are planning to leave the education world. They found that …

Eating Detection With A Head-Mounted Video Camera, Shengjie Bi, David Kotz Dec 2021

Eating Detection With A Head-Mounted Video Camera, Shengjie Bi, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper, we present a computer-vision based approach to detect eating. Specifically, our goal is to develop a wearable system that is effective and robust enough to automatically detect when people eat, and for how long. We collected video from a cap-mounted camera on 10 participants for about 55 hours in free-living conditions. We evaluated performance of eating detection with four different Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models. The best model achieved accuracy 90.9% and F1 score 78.7% for eating detection with a 1-minute resolution. We also discuss the resources needed to deploy a 3D CNN model in wearable or …

The Political Act Of Writing Feminism- Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain And The Utopian Vision, Mashall Momin Dec 2021

The Political Act Of Writing Feminism- Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain And The Utopian Vision, Mashall Momin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feminist Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain lived a life of seclusion and oppression like many middle-class Muslim women in colonial India during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. During this period, Rokeya used writing as a tool to fight against the oppression women faced from the patriarchal society and reimagined their gendered position in society. Rokeya wrote two novels, Sultana’s Dream and Padmarag, both set in feminist utopian societies. In these works, Rokeya expresses that the problem to the oppression of women can be traced to the purdah system or the seclusion of women, the solution is to grow …

Hydrodynamic Assessment Of Natural And Nature-Based Features For Escatawpa River And Grand Bay In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Peter Bacopoulos, Karim Alizad, Davina Passeri, Matthew Bilskie, Stephen Medeiros, Scott Hagen

Faculty Publications

This presentation showcases a hydrodynamic assessment of natural and nature-based features (NNBFs) for the Pascagoula River, the Escatawpa River and Grand Bay, located along the Mississippi coast of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Two separate NNBF projects are being considered to: (1) restore the historical footprint (ca. 1848) of Grand Batture Island for coastal protection purposes; and (2) reconnect the hydraulics between the Escatawpa River and Grand Bay for ecosystem services purposes. The intended coastal protection benefits of the first project include buffering agency to wave attack and attenuation of storm surge with the restored island. The intended ecosystem services …

New Orleans During A Pandemic: Engaging African American Community Stakeholders On Covid-19 Information, Prevention, Testing And Vaccination, Anthony Thompson

XULAneXUS

This case study examines how the Louisiana Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities (LA-CEAL) worked to engage African American residents in New Orleans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on research interviews with Black physicians, pharmacists, and community health providers, along with field notes collected during 12 months of project assistance, the study addresses four research questions concerning African American hesitancy toward COVID-19 treatment and vaccination, strategies for community engagement, clinical trial recruitment, and inclusive research practices during a pandemic. Findings indicate that vaccine hesitancy and research mistrust among Black New Orleanians are rooted in a long history of scientific racism …

Songs Of Eden, Emma Atkinson Dec 2021

Songs Of Eden, Emma Atkinson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Songs of Eden is a collection of short poems that were written during the Spring of 2021 semester as an individual study under the direction of Dr. Teresa Kennedy. The course itself was titled “Songs of the Fall” and fell under the category of ENGL 491. The name of the individual study is a nod to both the fall of man, and the tradition of epic poetry. As such, the project itself centers around the opening chapters of Genesis, focalizing on the persons of Adam and Eve. The work is divided into two main sections, each written from the perspective …

Optimizing The Time To Transfer Sexually Produced Corals Of Porites Astreoides, Agaricia Agaricites, And Montastraea Cavernosa To An Offshore Nursery, Rachel Ionata Dec 2021

Optimizing The Time To Transfer Sexually Produced Corals Of Porites Astreoides, Agaricia Agaricites, And Montastraea Cavernosa To An Offshore Nursery, Rachel Ionata

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

As reefs continue to decline globally and become unable to recover on their own, restoration becomes essential to abate reef degradation and boost reef recovery until the main sources of the degradation are addressed. Sexual propagation is an important restoration technique that still requires optimization. One of the major knowledge gaps is determining the optimal time to transfer newly-settled sexually-produced corals from an aquarium to an offshore nursery without compromising their survival and growth. This study transferred settlers from Porites astreoides, Agaricia agaricites, and Montastraea cavernosa to an offshore nursery at approximately one week, five weeks, and nine weeks post-settlement, …

Characterization Of Fish Assemblages On An Upper Mesophotic Reef In South Florida Using A Commercial Grade Mini Rov, Sydney L. Panzarino Dec 2021

Characterization Of Fish Assemblages On An Upper Mesophotic Reef In South Florida Using A Commercial Grade Mini Rov, Sydney L. Panzarino

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Mesophotic coral ecosystems, or MCEs, are coral ecosystems at approximately 30-150m depths and represent the transitional zone where benthic organisms rely less on photosynthesis and more on filter-feeding or other feeding habits in order to sustain themselves. Fish assemblages in MCE’s have been poorly studied and may possibly provide a connection to shallow water reefs (SWR’s). Mesophotic reef fish communities from 32-37 m depths were assessed using video footage recorded by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Video transects were performed at three locations: unburied areas north and south of Port Everglades, as well as an area which experienced burial from …

Forest Fires Reduce Snow-Water Storage And Advance The Timing Of Snowmelt Across The Western U.S., Emily E. Smoot, Kelly E. Gleason

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

As climate warms, snow-water storage is decreasing while forest fires are increasing in extent, frequency, and duration. The majority of forest fires occur in the seasonal snow zone across the western US. Yet, we do not understand the broad-scale variability of forest fire effects on snow-water storage and water resource availability. Using pre- and post-fire data from 78 burned SNOTEL stations, we evaluated post-fire shifts in snow accumulation (snow-water storage) and snowmelt across the West and Alaska. For a decade following fire, maximum snow-water storage decreased by over 30 mm, and the snow disappearance date advanced by 9 days, and …

Forms Of Femininity: The Esoteric Visual Language Of Amazigh Women Through Ceramic Traditions And Symbolic Motifs, Mackenzie Nunnally Dec 2021

Forms Of Femininity: The Esoteric Visual Language Of Amazigh Women Through Ceramic Traditions And Symbolic Motifs, Mackenzie Nunnally

Theses and Dissertations

Amazigh women exercise agency and maintain autonomy as individuals through an esoteric feminine visual language. This language incorporates traditional, ritual-based pottery-making practices that are grounded in ancient spiritual beliefs and socio-cultural roles. Highly functional yet artistic ceramicwares serve as forms of femininity, or visual representations of the women. Decorative yet decidedly symbolic, geometric motifs decorate these wares and serve as esoteric signifiers of Amazigh heritage while allowing the female artisans to communicate their own experiences, principles, and worldviews. This esoteric visual language is defined and analyzed by connections made between ancient aspects of Amazigh culture and ritual-based pottery-making practices, comparing …

Who Is A Turnaround Principal? : A Phenomenological Study Of Three Turnaround Principals, Tonya Yvette Hervey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract There is a scarcity of research about the inputs of Academic Optimism, Leader Mindfulness, dispositions, and beliefs of effective turnaround principals, especially since turnaround principals serve almost entirely African American and Hispanic student populations. The purpose of this study was to examine three turnaround school principals, staff, and environments to gain insights on how effective principals utilized the specific inputs of academic optimism and leader mindfulness, their dispositions, and beliefs, to implement effective turnaround policies. The analysis revealed 5 common themes among the 3 schools: Elementary School 1, which progressed from TVAAS1 to TVAAS4; Middle School 1, which improved …

Covid-19 And Thrombosis: Searching For Evidence, Bright Thilagar, Mohamad Beidoun, Ruben Rhoades, Scott Kaatz

Hospital Medicine Articles

Early in the pandemic, COVID-19-related increases in rates of venous and arterial thromboembolism were seen. Many observational studies suggested a benefit of prophylactic anticoagulation for hospitalized patients using various dosing strategies. Randomized trials were initiated to compare the efficacy of these different options in acutely ill and critically ill inpatients as the concept of immune-mediated inflammatory microthrombosis emerged. We present a case-based review of how we approach thromboembolic prophylaxis in COVID-19 and briefly discuss the epidemiology, the pathophysiology, and the rare occurrence of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia.

Agricultural Land Usage In Mansfield, Connecticut: An Analysis Of The Town’S Past And Present Agricultural Landscapes And Recent Farmland Conservation Efforts, Julia Tillinghast

Honors Scholar Theses

The town of Mansfield has a long history within the agricultural sector of Connecticut, from producing the first successful silk mill in the state to housing Mountain Dairy, a dairy supplier which sells to local consumers. This paper examines the history and progress of agricultural land usage within Mansfield, beginning with an overview of farmland in the town’s first century and ending with the current status of resident farms. At the start of settlement by English colonists in the 1700s, the town was deforested to make space for farms, housing, and general expansion. Moving forward to the 20th century, industrialization …

Serving Our Students: Evidence-Based Sex Education Policies And Practices Needed In Ohio, Lily Mckenzie Rosenberg Dec 2021

Serving Our Students: Evidence-Based Sex Education Policies And Practices Needed In Ohio, Lily Mckenzie Rosenberg

Honors Projects

Ohio has very minimal state-wide sex education laws, requiring only venereal disease education that has many similarities with abstinence-only education. Abstinence-only education has been shown to be ineffective in delaying first sex and lowering teen STDs, pregnancy, and birth rates. When students receive ineffective (or no) sex education it can impact them in many ways, leaving them unprepared for sexual lives as adults. To analyze the state of sex education in Ohio, this paper will look at sex education throughout Ohio both in law and in practice. I will then explore the impact of these minimal sex education laws on …

Effects Of Commodity Prices On Stock Returns In The Firearm Industry, Lance Siler Dec 2021

Effects Of Commodity Prices On Stock Returns In The Firearm Industry, Lance Siler

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

A modified version of the CAPM (Capital Asset Pricing Model) is used to evaluate the potential relationship between commodity inputs and the stock returns of public firearm companies. The data analysis involved using the model to develop expected returns for each of the companies’ stock and then a regression was run between the returns provided by the model and historical returns. The p-values for each regression are statistically significant. This indicates that there is some sort of connection between metal commodity returns and stock returns.
