Cardiovascular Metrics Associated With Prevention Of Aging-Related Parkinsonian Signs Following Exercise Intervention In Sedentary Older Rats, Ella A. Kasanga, Joel Little, Tamara R. Mcinnis, Nicoleta Bugnariu, J. Thomas Cunningham, Michael F. Salvatore
Pacific Faculty Work
Preservation of motor capabilities is vital to maintaining independent daily living throughout a person's lifespan and may mitigate aging-related parkinsonism, a progressive and prevalent motor impairment. Physically active lifestyles can mitigate aging-related motor impairment. However, the metrics of physical activity necessary for mitigating parkinsonian signs are not established. Consistent moderate intensity (~10 m/min) treadmill exercise can reverse aging-related parkinsonian signs by 20 weeks in a 2-week on, 2-week off, regimen in previously sedentary advanced middle-aged rats. In this study, we initiated treadmill exercise in sedentary 18-month-old male rats to address two questions: (1) if a rest period not longer than …
Graph Based Management Of Temporal Data, Alex Fotso
Graph Based Management Of Temporal Data, Alex Fotso
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the use of smart devices and sensors that led to high-volume temporal data generation. Temporal modeling and querying of this huge data have been essential for effective querying and retrieval. However, custom temporal models have the problem of generalizability, whereas the extended temporal models require users to adapt to new querying languages. In this thesis, we propose a method to improve the modeling and retrieval of temporal data using an existing graph database system (i.e., Neo4j) without extending with additional operators. Our work focuses on temporal data represented as intervals …
Nursing Management To Reduce Hospital Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Interventions- Integrative Review, Jeena S. Daniel, Doreen Wagner
Nursing Management To Reduce Hospital Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Interventions- Integrative Review, Jeena S. Daniel, Doreen Wagner
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Abstract
Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) are considered life-saving techniques in the event of myocardial infarction and remain the standard of care for managing acute heart attack. Given the success of the procedures, decreased complications, and the economic advantage over open-heart surgery, coronary interventions continue to be the preferred treatment choice. However, amidst the growth and success of these procedures, readmissions after percutaneous coronary interventions have been identified and still prevail among hospitals. Hence, the goal was to conduct an integrative review to identify and synthesize literature on the interventions that help reduce readmissions after percutaneous coronary interventions and illuminate nurses' …

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), famously known as COVID-19, has quickly become a global pandemic. Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging has proven reliable, fast, and cost-effective for identifying COVID-19 infections, which proceeds to display atypical unilateral patchy infiltration in the lungs like typical pneumonia. We employed the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) ResNet-34 to detect and classify CXR images from patients with COVID-19 and Viral Pneumonia and Normal Controls.
Methods: We created a single database containing 781 source CXR images from four different international sub-databases: the Società Italiana di Radiologia Medica e Interventistica (SIRM), the GitHub Database, the …
Utilizing Software Engineering And Cloud Computing Principles To Develop The Revised Self-Report Assessment Of Functional Visual Performance (R-Srafvp) Application, Kirk Hedlich
Masters Projects
Can principles from software engineering and concepts from cloud computing be applied to and aid in the development of a small project, specifically improving the use of the Revised Self-Report Assessment of Functional Visual Performance (R-SRAFVP)? The target for this project is to create a new application and improve on existing attempts to move the R-SRAFVP assessment from an electronic document format to a web-based application. The new application should provide better ease of use, simplicity in design and understanding for use, and hopefully increased access and adoption by Occupation Therapists who specialize in low vision rehabilitation. The benefits of …

Detecting Apple Crop Pest Insects From Eptesicus Fuscus (Big Brown Bat) Feces Using Metabarcoding In Southern Michigan Apple Orchards, Randi Lesagonicz
Masters Projects
Michigan is ranked third in the U.S. for apple production. Michigan State University identified 78 pest insect species that cause damage to Michigan’s crop. Orchards using conventional and integrated pest management (IPM) spend thousands of dollars on pest control substances, which are hazardous to the environment and human health, and do not prevent 100% of crop damage and losses. The public’s increasing desire for “cleaner” foods has led to studies on how to incorporate more naturally occurring pest biocontrol agents. Bats have been recognized as pest insect biocontrol agents in numerous U.S. agroecosystems like corn, cotton, and pecans; however, little …
Depression As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Perceived Injustice And Neuropsychological Performance Validity Among Individuals Previously Diagnosed With A Concussion, Jeremiah Lum
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Concussion is one of the most common conditions seen within rehabilitation and neuropsychology. Given that many concussions are diagnosed following litigation-associated injuries, it is unsurprising that malingered neurocognitive deficit (i.e., deliberate underperformance on cognitive instruments in the interest of secondary gain) has dominated the concussion literature. Although the identification of malingering is essential to ethical assessment, its presence or absence is not the sole determinant of performance validity as a whole. Rather, performance validity is a broad construct involving effort, which refers to examinees’ investment in performing at capacity levels; emerging research suggests this can be affected by psychological factors …

Because of its compatibility with semiconductor-based technologies, hafnia (HfO2) is today’s most promising ferroelectric material for applications in electronics. Yet, knowledge on the ferroic and electromechanical response properties of this all-important compound is still lacking. Interestingly, HfO2 has recently been predicted to display a negative longitudinal piezoelectric effect, which sets it apart from classic ferroelectrics (e.g., perovskite oxides like PbTiO3) and is reminiscent of the behavior of some organic compounds. The present work corroborates this behavior, by first-principles calculations and an experimental investigation of HfO2 thin films using piezoresponse force microscopy. Further, the simulations …

Climate changes leading to higher summer temperatures can adversely affect cool season crops like spring barley. In the Upper Midwest region of the United States, one option for escaping this stress factor is to plant winter or facultative type cultivars in the autumn and then harvest in early summer before the onset of high-temperature stress. However, the major challenge in breeding such cultivars is incorporating sufficient winter hardiness to survive the extremely low temperatures that commonly occur in this production region. To broaden the genetic base for winter hardiness in the University of Minnesota breeding program, 2,214 accessions from the …

Recent studies observed a correlation between estrogen-related cancers and groundwater atrazine in eastern Nebraska counties. However, the mechanisms of human exposure to atrazine are unclear because low groundwater atrazine concentration was observed in counties with high cancer incidence despite having the highest atrazine usage. We studied groundwater atrazine fate in high atrazine usage Nebraska counties. Data were collected from Quality Assessed Agrichemical Contaminant Nebraska Groundwater, Parameter–Elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM), and water use databases. Descriptive statistics and cluster analysis were performed. Domestic wells (59%) were the predominant well type. Groundwater atrazine was affected by well depth. Clusters consisting …

The Yangzhuang iron deposit is a Kiruna-type iron oxide-apatite (IOA) deposit within the Ningwu mining district of the Middle and Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt (MLYRMB), China. This study applies a numerical modeling approach to identify the key processes associated with the formation of the deposit that cannot be easily identified using traditional analytical approaches, including the duration of the mineralizing process and the genesis of iron orebodies within intrusions associated with the deposit. This approach highlights the practical value of numerical modeling in quantitatively analyzing mineralizing processes during the formation of mineral deposits and assesses how these methods can …

The Effects Of Swamping On Nurses And The Implications For Professional Development, Barbara Ann Hocking
Dissertations
Nursing is a profession that is essential to the successful functioning of the health care system. The problems that compromise essential nursing practice within the work environment result in a costly health care quality crisis with three detrimental outcomes: (1) medical errors, (2) fragmentation of the care continuum, and (3) inefficiencies in health care processes.
This study aimed to investigate, through interviews and researcher observations, how nurses are affected by their environment in order to inform a plan for professional development.

Platform organizations bring renewed attention to power disparities and risks in the rise of surveillance capitalism. However; such critical accounts provide a partial understanding of the complexity of surveillance phenomena in such shifting socio-technical and digital environments. The findings from a netnographic investigation of a healthcare platform organization, PatientsLikeMe, unravel how platforms become the locus where multi-level flows of surveillance converge, thereby constituting what we identify as a surveillant assemblage. We develop a comprehensive approach for understanding how platforms constitute a dynamic crossroads of micro-, meso- and macro-surveillance phenomena within and beyond the online communities they create. This study highlights this surveillant …
