License To Heal: Understanding A Healthcare Platform Organization As A Multi-Level Surveillant Assemblage, Handan Vicdan, Mar Pérezts, Asım Fuat Fırat

Management Faculty Publications

Platform organizations bring renewed attention to power disparities and risks in the rise of surveillance capitalism. However; such critical accounts provide a partial understanding of the complexity of surveillance phenomena in such shifting socio-technical and digital environments. The findings from a netnographic investigation of a healthcare platform organization, PatientsLikeMe, unravel how platforms become the locus where multi-level flows of surveillance converge, thereby constituting what we identify as a surveillant assemblage. We develop a comprehensive approach for understanding how platforms constitute a dynamic crossroads of micro-, meso- and macro-surveillance phenomena within and beyond the online communities they create. This study highlights this surveillant …

Characterization Of Bacteriophage Targeting Bacillus Licheniformis In Milk Processes And Thermal Stability Of Bacteriophage During Htst Pasteurization, Jeremy Robert Arbon

Theses and Dissertations

An array of Bacillus licheniformis strains were isolated from a commercial powdered milk process. Bacteriophages exhibiting activity against B. licheniformis were isolated from cattle manure and effluent samples destined for a lagoon at a dairy farm. After sequencing, 8 of the 10 phages were found to be novel and genetically differentiated. Transmission electron scanning microscopy (TSEM) was performed. All bacteriophages were of the family Herelleviridae with contractile tail sheaths ranging from 80µm to 150µm and, surprisingly, survived a common fluid milk processing treatment used to inactivate vegetative cells. The survival of the phage after high temperature short time pasteurization of …

Investigating Antimicrobial Properties Of Snake Venoms Against B. Cereus, B. Subtilis, E. Coli, And P. Vulgaris, Savannah Elaine Berger

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

The increasing incidence of antibiotic resistant bacterial infections has provoked the attention of health officials and scientists as a major threat to global public health. Antibiotic resistance is the product of overprescription by doctors, ineffective or shortened dosing by the patient, and more. When a bacterial infection is ineffectively treated as such, persistent pathogenic cells are given the opportunity to proliferate and spread their resistance to other cells. With bacteria utilizing such tools to fight and ultimately resist our current treatment methods, investigation towards the next novel mechanism of inhibition is essential. Venom is of particular interest to many scientists …

“Africa Of The Heart”: The African Experience In Derek Walcott's Omeros, Hussein Kadhum Challab

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Derek Walcott's book-length poem Omeros won critical acclaim soon after its publication in 1990. In this poem, the world of the Caribbean is linked with that of Homer by recalling the dramas of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey in a Caribbean setting. Africa is heavily featured in Omeros as most of the major characters of the poem who in one way or another go through the African experience. 'Return to Africa' is a recurrent theme in Derek Walcott's works. However, this kind of return is not for the sole purpose of finding their old lost homeland, but rather for establishing roots …

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

This paper discusses the scars of capitalism in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and ‘Kew Gardens’. Following one day of the character’s life, the discussion will investigate how the novel and the short story introduce the capitalist ideology that dictates the character’s everyday life and how the characters, in different ways and to certain extents, react to it. In Mrs. Dalloway, Woolf depicts capitalism as an oppressive system that can be very rewarding to those who submit to its ideals and, at the same time, very catastrophic to those who try to confront it or question its validity. In ‘Kew …

The Effect Of Adding Sludge On Some Aqueous Properties Of Loamy Soil Mixture, Suad Abdulkhadim

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Adding sludge to the soil increases the ability of the soil to retain water when the levels of addition increase, especially in sandy soils, and this is due to the role of the decomposition products of these residues in linking the initial soil particles together, improving its construction, increasing its porosity and its aeration. The study concluded with many results. Perhaps the most important of them are:

The decomposition of organic excreta by means of soil regeneration is rapid and energetic, and it leads to a decrease in the bulk density of soft-textured soils, improvement of permeability, increased stability of …
