Introduction To Series And Parallel Circuits, Craig E. Shepherd, Shannon M. Smith
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
This lesson begins with an introduction on electricity and how it is formed at the molecular level. It then lets learners explore and define a circuit. This introduction is followed by an exploration where learners develop series and parallel circuits using LED lights and motors. Learners then consider what constitutes a series and parallel circuit, open and closed circuit, and a short circuit. The lesson concludes by having learners consider advantages, limitations, and instructional uses of various electronics kits (e.g., Snap Circuits, littleBits, LilyPad, paper circuits, conductive dough) based on their ability to display circuit paths.
Disparate Impacts Of Two Public Reporting Initiatives On Clinical And Perceived Quality In Healthcare, Ahreum Han, J. Park
Disparate Impacts Of Two Public Reporting Initiatives On Clinical And Perceived Quality In Healthcare, Ahreum Han, J. Park
Health Care Administration Faculty Research
Purpose: Transparency is increasingly viewed as a prerequisite for value-based health care that invites quality in the assessment of achieved value. However, nowadays the ability of transparency initiatives to enhance quality of care remains obscure, if not rejected. Thus, this study aims to investigate how transparency initiatives influence two types of quality of care: clinical and perceived quality.
Methods: First, factor analyses were conducted to construct three dependent variables: healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), 30-day readmission rates, and patient satisfaction. Then, the three quality models were compared by running ordinary least squares multiple regressions using STATA 14.1. The existence of …

Bases For The Establishment Of Robusta Coffee (Coffea Canephora) As A New Crop For Colombia, Luis F. Campuzano-Duque, Juan Carlos Herrera, Claire Ged, Matthew Wohlgemuth Blair
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Robusta coffee (C. canephora) covers 36% of world coffee production and has strategic relevance as a beverage that it is produced by thousands of small-scale producers around the world. Although mainly grown in Africa and Asia as opposed to Latin America, this situation is changing. Colombia is recognized as a producer of high-quality Arabica (C. arabica L.) coffee, however we argue that Robusta represents a great economic opportunity for small scale producers, for the industrialization of new products and for emerging coffee chains. Therefore, the objective of this review is to outline the agronomic value of Robusta coffee as a …

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering
The development of a non-scanning laser-based imaging lidar system based on a diffractive optical element with potential applications in advanced driver assistance systems, autonomous vehicles, drone navigation, and mobile devices is reported. The proposed lidar utilizes image processing with homography. The emphasis in the design approach has been on compactness and cost of the final system for it to be deployable both as standalone or complementary to existing lidar sensors, enabling fusion sensing in the applications. This work describes the basic elements of the proposed lidar system. It presents the potential ranging mechanisms, along with their experimental results demonstrating the …
Workplace Incivility, Megan Paul
Workplace Incivility, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What is workplace incivility?
Workplace incivility refers to “low-intensity deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm the target, in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect. Uncivil behaviors are characteristically rude and discourteous, displaying a lack of regard for others” (Anderson & Pearson, 1999, p. 457). Though there is some conceptual and empirical overlap between incivility and ostracism, bullying, and abusive supervision, incivility is considered distinct (Yao et al., 2021). Incivility has been examined from the perspective of both the victim and the instigator, exploring factors related to being the target of incivility and factors related to engaging in uncivil …

Are Ships Communities Of Practice?, Josephine Nthia, Quentin N. Cox
International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
The purpose of this paper is to explore the idea that a merchant ship aligns with the academic notion of a Community of Practice. Through secondary qualitative research, the paper identifies several characteristics which provide compelling evidence. Young seafarers face multiple challenges joining their first ship, not only in terms of mastering the technicalities of their roles but also in terms of social behaviour and interaction. As anyone contemplating the training of school leavers will realise, the people from whom they learn, will inevitably influence their conduct. Learning on the job is not exclusive to the apprentice. Ship staff will …

Nursing DNP Projects
Purpose: Persistent levels of high stress among nurses impact work activities and job performance, leading to burnout, compassion fatigue, lower job satisfaction, high workplace turnover, and diminished quality of patient care (Lin et al., 2018). Nurses who demonstrate resilience are better able to adapt to unexpected events with a positive attitude, self-esteem, and tolerance (Huang et al., 2020). The purpose of this project was to decrease stress levels and improve resilience among nursing staff, utilizing education on holistic stress management and resilience techniques.
Methods: A four-hour mindfulness-based education course was provided to staff members (N=76). Components included an initial two-hour …

Genetic Effects Mediated Through Epistatic Networks Onto Metabolic Traits, Juan Francisco Macias-Velasco
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Predicting variation in complex traits from DNA sequence is a major public health goal, but our understanding of the genotype-to-phenotype relationship is incomplete. It will remain so unless we can adequately integrate genetic, epigenetic, and environmental information into a systems level framework. In a step towards that goal, quantitative trait mapping studies have attempted to account for environmental factors such as sex and diet, and epigenetic factors such as allelic parent-of-origin effects. Several studies used an advanced intercross of the LG/J and SM/J inbred mouse strains to unravel the genetic architecture of multiple metabolic traits. These studies found that parent-of-origin …

Filled/Non-Filled Pairs: An Empirical Challenge To The Integrated Information Theory Of Consciousness, Amber R. Hopkins, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Perceptual filling-in for vision is the insertion of visual properties (e.g., color, contour, luminance, or motion) into one’s visual field, when those properties have no corresponding retinal input. This paper introduces and provides preliminary empirical support for filled/non-filled pairs, pairs of images that appear identical, yet differ by amount of filling-in. It is argued that such image pairs are important to the experimental testing of theories of consciousness. We review recent experimental research and conclude that filling-in involves brain activity with relatively high integrated information (Φ) compared to veridical visual perceptions. We then present filled/non-filled pairs as …

Empathy As A Moderator Of Preservice Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy Beliefs, Juta Tammachart
Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was to examine the relationship model between culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy (CRTSE) and culturally responsive teaching outcome expectancy beliefs (CRTOE) in Thailand. There were two research questions outlined in the study: what is the relationship between preservice teachers’ CRTSE and CRTOE? Also, does the culturally responsive teaching teacher empathy (CRTTE) moderate the relationship of preservice teachers’ CRTSE and CRTOE?
Based on the CRT standards by Siwatu (2005), there were three measures applied in the study: CRTSE, CRTOE, and CRTTE scales. These instruments were piloted with 536 preservice teachers in the Faculty of Education, Prince …

Innovative Finance For Mine Action, Camille Wallen, Peter Nicholas, Anna Von Griesheim
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Achieving a world free of landmines will require at least US$1 billion in additional funding. Bridging this gap will require using all available funding sources and maximizing the efficiency of spending. Innovative finance can help achieve both aims by accessing funding not traditionally available for mine action. To explore these options further, the UK government commissioned work to examine the potential roles of innovative finance in mine action. After discussions with a range of stakeholders, a broad consensus emerged around three approaches. First, outcomes finance, whereby funding disburses against independently verified results, such as mine clearance and recovery of activity …

Personal protective equipment (PPE) in mine action typically consists of a polycarbonate visor that fully covers the face and front neck, and body armor consisting of an apron made of aramid fabric (i.e., Kevlar) that fully covers the front torso, groin, and neck. PPE used in mine action is generally considered as “the last line of defense” since the primary method through which accidental deaths and injuries are prevented is through the application of and adherence to appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs). However, with any operations, there is always an element of “acceptable risk,” and universal adherence to all SOPs …
