Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous primary deficiency characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent infections, an increased risk of autoimmune disease, malignancy, and chronic inflammation. Proteinuria is one of the most important prognostic factors causing progression in kidney disease. Proteinuria causes tubulotoxicity, activates inflammatory markers that cause fibrosis, and consequently nephropathy progression. The data is scant in the literature regarding the inflammation and nephropathy in CVID. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between tubular dysfunction, proteinuria, and inflammation in patients with CVID. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 27 patients with CVID …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Calcineurin, an inhibitor of calcium dependent phosphatase is highly presented in a brain of an Alzheimer?s disease. Aging brain gets more sensitive to hyperactivation of calcineurin, and this event causes tau neurofibrillary plaque accumulation, which is one of the outcomes of this disease. The regions of hippocampus are much effected from the results of this process. Our hypothesis is that a calcineurin inhibitor, tacrolimus, could prevent the accumulation and the decrease of the neuronal cells. Therefore, this immunosuppressive drug could be a candidate for an early treatment of Alzheimer disease. Materials and methods: Fifteen male Wistar albino rats were …

Background/aim: Physical exercise is a state of physiological stress that requires adaptation of the organism to physical activity. Glycogen is an important and essential energy source for muscle contraction. Skeletal muscle and liver are two important glycogen stores, and the energy required to maintain exercise in rodents are provided by destruction of this glycogen depot. In this study, the effects of endogenous opioid peptide antagonism at the central nervous system level on tissue glycogen content after exhaustive exercise were investigated. Materials and methods: Rats had intracerebroventricularly (icv) received nonspecific opioid peptide receptor antagonist, naloxone (50 μ/10 μL in saline) and …

Background/aim: The effects of systemic magnesium sulfate (MgSO4 ) on retina in preterm hypoxic-ischemic (HI) rat model are not known. Our aim was to investigate the effects of MgSO4 on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) count, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptotic index, retinal vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expressions in preterm HI rat model. Materials and methods: Fifteen, postnatal day (PND) 7 rat pups were divided into 3 groups: 1. Sham-operated group, 2. HI group, and 3. MgSO4 -treated HI group. The second and third groups underwent ischemia followed by exposure to hypoxia for …

Background/aim: Epidural fibrosis (EF) is a common cause of failed back surgery syndrome seen after spinal surgeries. The most frequent reason for the formation of EF is accumulated blood and its products in the operation zone. On the development of EF, the effect of bipolar coagulation and fibrillar oxidized cellulose, which are used frequently to control bleeding, was investigated. Materials and methods: In the study, 45 male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups (control, fibrillar, and bipolar). Lumbar laminectomy was applied to all rats under sterile conditions. In the control group, the epidural area was washed with saline …
