Autoimmunity In Psoriatic Arthritis: Pathophysiological And Clinical Aspects, Hakan Emmungi̇l, Ufuk İlgen, Rafi̇ Haner Di̇reskeneli̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an underdiagnosed entity with a broad impact on the quality of life. Although the pathogenesis is largely unknown, autoimmune footprints of the inflammation in PsA have increasingly been recognized. Most of the genetic variation predisposing to PsA is mapped to the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region and shared by a variety of autoimmune diseases. Polymorphisms in the genes IL12B, IL23R, IL13, TNIP1, TRAF3IP2, TYK2, and many others explain the nonHLA genetic risk with little known functional consequences. Entheseal and synovial cellular infiltrate with oligoclonal CD8+ T cells and occasional germinal centers, loss of regulatory …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a systemic autoinflammatory disease that causes recurrent attacks of fever, polyserositis, arthritis or skin eruptions, resulting in pain in the abdomen, muscles, joints and chest. All of these might lead to a reduction in exercise capacity, muscle strength, physical activity level (PAL) and quality of life (QoL). Therefore, assesment of these parameters are important. The aim of this study was to assess exercise capacity, muscle strength, PAL, and QoL in patients with FMF as compared to controls. Materials and methods: A total of 40 subjects with FMF and 36 healthy control subjects participated in …

Background/aim: Peritonitis attacks of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) usually requires emergency medical admissions and it's hard to distinguish a typical abdominal attack from surgical causes of acute abdomen. Therefore, history of abdominal surgery, particularly appendectomy, is very common in patients with FMF. However, history of appendectomy might also give some clues about the course of FMF in the adulthood. This study was to determine whether the history of appendectomy help to anticipate disease course of FMF in the adulthood. Materials and methods: All patients recruited from FMF in Central Anatolia (FiCA) cohort, comprising 971 adult subjects. All patients fulfilled the …

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms And Quality Of Life In Female Patientswith Fibromyalgia, Gözde Türkoğlu, Yavuz Selvi̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The present study aimed to determine the association between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms severity, fibromyalgia (FM) severity, and QoL. Materials and methods: While the FM group consisted of 113 (74%) patients, the control group consisted of 40 (26%) individuals. FM symptom severity, ADHD symptom severity, and QoL were evaluated using the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ), adult ADHD self-report scale (ASRS), and World Health Organization quality of life scale-brief version (WHOQOL-BREF), respectively. Results: It was found that the FM group had significantly higher scores on the ASRS than the control group (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference in FIQ scores and three WHOQOL-BREF domain scores between the FM alone and comorbid FM/high probability of ADHD groups (p < 0.05). We found a negative correlation between ASRS total scores and all other scale scores (except for the social relationships domain score of the WHOQOL-BREF) and a positive correlation between ASRS total scores and FIQ scores in FM patients. ADHD scores would mediate the relationship between depression severity and QoL. Conclusions: Our findings indicated that the presence of ADHD symptoms was related to greater FM symptom severity and poorer QoL. Also, ADHD scores would mediate the relationship between depression severity and QoL.

Background/aim: Atherosclerotic heart diseases can occur at an early age in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) values are reliable markers for early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with AS. We aimed to investigate the relationship between visfatin levels and indirect markers of subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in patients with AS. Materials and methods: Forty-two patients diagnosed with AS and 42 age, sex, and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls were included in the study. Visfatin levels, FMD, and cIMT were measured using appropriate methods. Results: Visfatin levels of the patients were …

Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sicca symptoms and secondary Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Also this study aimed to evaluate the expression of ∝ -smooth muscle actin (∝ -SMA) in minor salivary gland (MSG) specimens, a possible marker of fibrosis responsible for myofibroblastic transformation. Materials and methods: Patients with SSc who were followed in Rheumatology outpatient clinic at a university hospital evaluated. The questionnaire of sicca symptoms and classification of SjS were evaluated according to the American-European Consensus Group (AECG) criteria. Histopathologic evaluations were done in MSG specimens investigating the presence of …

The Alteration Of Lymphocyte Subsets In Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis, Ayça Emsen, Hande Köksal, Hülya Uçaryilmaz, Nai̇m Kadoglou, Hasi̇be Artaç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background and aim: This study analyzed peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets to determine their role in the etiopathogenesis of IGM. Materials and methods: This study includes 51 pathologically proven IGM patients (active disease: 26 and in remission: 25) and 28 healthy volunteers. The analyses of lymphocyte subsets were performed by flow cytometric immunophenotyping. Results: The percentage of T helper lymphocyte of all IGM patients were lower than control groups (p = 0.001). Absolute cytotoxic T lymphocyte count (p = 0.03), both percentage (p = 0.035) and absolute count (p = 0.002) of the natural killer cells, and both percentage (p = …

Background/aim: Postnatal corticosteroids are commonly used to treat bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). We aimed to show whether S100 calcium-binding B (S100B), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), Tau protein or microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), and glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) levels would provide any evidence of early neurological damage in premature infants receiving postnatal low dose dexamethasone therapy for BPD treatment. Materials and methods: In this cohort study, 136 preterm infants diagnosed with BPD at ≤ 32 weeks of gestation formed the study group, and 64 preterm infants formed the control group. NSE, S100B, GFAP, and MAPT levels were first measured before the postnatal …

The Relationship Between Amount Of Extra-Prostatic Extension And Length Of Capsularcontact: Performances From Mr Images And Radical Prostatectomy Specimens, Aslihan Onay Çolak, Bariş Bakir

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Backround/aim: In prostate cancer, extraprostatic extension (EPE) is an unfavorable prognostic factor, and the grade of EPE is correlated with the prognosis. This study aims to evaluate the utility of length of capsular contact (LCC ) in predicting the grade of EPE by correlating the measurements from MRI images and the measurements performed from radical prostatectomy specimens. Materials and methods: MR images and specimens of 110 tumors are analyzed retrospectively. The specimens are used as reference to validate the presence of EPE and to measure the ground truth LCC. MR images are evaluated by two radiologists to identify the presence …
