Investigation Of The Effect Of Hyperthyroidism On Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Transient Receptor Potential Canonical 1 Channel In The Kidney, Nuri̇ye Ezgi̇ Bektur, Erhan Şahi̇n, Sedat Kaçar, Ridvan Bağci, Şeri̇fe Karakaya, Di̇lek Burukoğlu Dönmez, Varol Şahi̇ntürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hyperthyroidism is associated with results in increased glomerular filtration rate as well as increased renin-angiotensin-aldosterone activation. The disturbance of Ca2+ homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is associated with many diseases, including diabetic nephropathy and hyperthyroidism. Transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1) channel is the first cloned TRPC family protein. Although it is expressed in many places in the kidney, its function is uncertain. TRPC1 is involved in regulating Ca2+ homeostasis, and its upregulation increases ER Ca2+ level, activates the unfolded protein response, which leads to cellular damage in the kidney. This study investigated the role of TRPC1 in …

Materials and methods: A total of 1871 patients recorded in TReasure registry for whom advanced therapy was prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or spondyloarthritis (SpA) within the 3 months (6-9 months for rituximab) before the declaration of COVID-19 pandemic were evaluated, and 1394 (74.5%) responded to the phone survey. Patients' data regarding demographic, clinical characteristics and disease activity before the pandemic were recorded. The patients were inquired about the diagnosis of …

Background/aim: SARS-CoV-2, a ribonucleic acid coronavirus, rapidly spread worldwide within a short timeframe. Although different antiviral, antiinflammatory, and immunomodulatory drugs are used, current evidence is insufficient as to which drug is more efficient. Our study compared favipiravir and lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/RTV) therapies in inpatient care for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Materials and methods: Demographic data, test results, treatments, and latest status of patients receiving inpatient COVID-19 pneumonia therapy were recorded. The initial favipiravir and LPV/RTV receiving groups were compared regarding the need for intensive care units (ICU) and mortality. Logistic regression analysis was performed by including variables showing significant differences …

Background/aim: This study aimed to analyze the serum melatonin levels and changes in sleep patterns in pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Materials and methods: This study was designed as a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Serum melatonin levels and sleep parameters of children with the diagnosis of COVID-19 who had mild and moderate disease (i.e., COVID-19 group) were compared with those of children admitted with non-COVID-19 nonspecific upper respiratory tract infection (i.e., control group). The sleep disturbance scale for children (SDSC) questionnaire was applied to the participants' primary caregivers to analyze their sleep patterns at present and six months before …

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an underdiagnosed entity with a broad impact on the quality of life. Although the pathogenesis is largely unknown, autoimmune footprints of the inflammation in PsA have increasingly been recognized. Most of the genetic variation predisposing to PsA is mapped to the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region and shared by a variety of autoimmune diseases. Polymorphisms in the genes IL12B, IL23R, IL13, TNIP1, TRAF3IP2, TYK2, and many others explain the nonHLA genetic risk with little known functional consequences. Entheseal and synovial cellular infiltrate with oligoclonal CD8+ T cells and occasional germinal centers, loss of regulatory …
