Incorporating stakeholder engagement into environmental management may help in the pursuit of novel approaches for addressing complex water resource problems. However, evidence about how and under what circumstances stakeholder engagement enables desirable changes remains elusive. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework for studying social and environmental changes possible through stakeholder engagement in water resource management, from inception to outcomes. We synthesize concepts from multiple literatures to provide a framework for tracing linkages from contextual conditions, through engagement process design features, to social learning, community capacity building, and behavioral change at individual, group, and group network levels, and ultimately …

The ultra diffuse galaxy in the NGC 5846 group (NGC 5846UDG1) was shown to have a large number of globular cluster (GC) candidates from deep imaging as part of the VEGAS survey. Recently, Müller et al. published a velocity dispersion, based on a dozen of its GCs. Within their quoted uncertainties, the resulting dynamical mass allowed for either a dark matter free or a dark-matter-dominated galaxy. Here, we present spectra from KCWI that reconfirms membership of the NGC 5846 group and reveals a stellar velocity dispersion for UDG1 of σGC = 17 ± 2 km s-1. Our dynamical mass, with …

The rise of algorithm-driven decision making enabled by Big Data has generated widespread concern among legal scholars. However, few critics have considered data on people’s existing preferences about the role of algorithms in decision systems. This Article uses empirical analysis of a novel, large dataset of consumer surveys to elucidate those preferences. The surveys explore whether people prefer to have an algorithm or a human determine an outcome affecting their welfare in a range of representative scenarios with varying stakes. The Article examines how preferences change when one type of decisionmaker produces results that are more accurate, faster, cheaper, or …

Recent debates on racial inequalities in the criminal justice system focus on offenders while neglecting the other side of the criminal equation—victims of crime. Such scholarly oversight is surprising given the similarly deep racial disparities in the treatment of victims, manifested in different stages of the criminal justice system. Delving into the underexplored territory of racialized victimization, this project bridges that gap and exposes the roots of the disparate treatment of Black victims in the American criminal justice system. These unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial tensions bring to the fore questions about governmental allocation of resources and …

Difficulty Of Care: Alligning Tax And Health Care Policy For Family Caregiving, Christine S. Speidel

Faculty Publications

In the United States millions of people live with disabilities, many of whom require assistance with activities of daily life to remain in their homes and communities. However, financial support for this assistance is limited. Many caregivers forgo working outside the home in order to provide care to a family member. And while state and federal programs provide some compensation for caregiving, caregivers frequently face problems including poverty, lack of health insurance, lack of Social Security and Medicare credits, and lack of retirement savings. Our nation’s paltry support for caregiving threatens the practical ability of people with disabilities to choose …

Peer Motivation: Getting Through Math Together, Jessica Mean, Wes Maciejewski

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Students have a complex relationship with mathematics. Some love it, but more often than not, the feelings are less favorable. These feelings can lead to decreased motivation which makes it difficult for students to engage with the subject as the semester progresses. Instructors also have difficulty addressing this waning motivation. In this paper, we claim peers are better able to connect with the students and this can be leveraged to better motivate students. We present an approach to having peers motivate their students. These peer interactions integrated with a mandatory mathematics course might improve students’ motivation.

A Proposed Return-To-Ride Protocol For United States Jockeys Following Concussion, Carolina Quintana, Kimberly I. Tumlin, Matthew C. Hoch, Nicholas R. Heebner, Bianca L. Grimshaw, Carl G. Mattacola

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Professional horse racing jockeys participate in a high-risk sport, however there is limited research and policies regarding welfare and safety. Despite the high incidence and risk of concussions, there are not standardized protocols for returning these unique athletes to participation following concussion. A return-to-ride concussion protocol for thoroughbred horse racing athletes must take into account the unique considerations and practices of the sport. Current concussion management strategies suggest removal from riding and activity when a concussion is suspected. This is followed by further evaluation for diagnosis, a period of both cognitive and physical rest before a gradual return-to-activity prior to …

Swill-Tac: Skill-Oriented Dynamic Task Allocation With Willingness For Complex Job In Crowdsourcing, Riya Samanta, Soumya K. Ghosh, Sajal K. Das Jan 2021

Swill-Tac: Skill-Oriented Dynamic Task Allocation With Willingness For Complex Job In Crowdsourcing, Riya Samanta, Soumya K. Ghosh, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Allocating tasks to the best-fit candidates is a classical problem in crowdsourcing (CS). Most of the existing approaches assume that the task and candidate knowledge is known in advance and ignore the effect of enrolled candidates' willingness on the CS system's selection decision. For instance, an unwilling candidate assigned to a task may quit without completing it, thus depreciating the utility of the CS platform. In practice, a task or candidate may arrive or leave the CS system dynamically. Moreover, a complex task may be broken into smaller sub-tasks, each requiring a variety of computations and expertise. To overcome these …

Novel Heat Index Models For Subtropical Region Based On Daily Milk Production Incrossbred Holstein Cows, Neeraj Kashyap, Atish Kumar Chakravarty, Bharti Deshmukh

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The quantification of the effect of heat stress imposed due to higher rate of heat gain on animal production is a prerequisite while estimating effects of heat stress. Temperature humidity index (THI) models developed empirically using meteorological parameters have been utilized as an indicator of heat stress. This study attempted to develop a heat index model with respect to productivity of the crossbred Holstein cows. More than 1.23 million daily milk yield records of 1860 crossbred cattle spread over a duration of 30 years were utilized. Statistically significant (p < 0.0001) partial regression coefficients were estimated as 0.0748 ± 0.0009 for dry bulb temperature (T$_{db}$) and -0.2228 ± 0.0011 for wet bulb temperature in model 1, -0.0182 ± 0.0005 T$_{db}$ and -0.1205 ± 0.0006 for vapour pressure in model 2, -0.0150 ± 0.0006 for Tdb and -0.1151 ± 0.0006 for dew point temperature in model 3 while as -0.1283 ± 0.0004 for T$_{db}$ and -0.0394 ± 0.0002 for relative humidity in model 4. The ratio of the partial regression coefficients of meteorological parameters (ß2/ß1) was -2.9791 in model 1, 6.8739 in model 2, 7.6731 in model 3 and 0.3073 in model 4. The developed THI models are based on the effect of meteorological parameters on daily productivity of the dairy animals, so the weightages to meteorological parameters were contrastingly different than the reported THI models. These models may successfully be used to evaluate the impact of heat stress on crossbred Holstein cows with respect to milk productivity and many other traits.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

There are different types of endocrine cells that are located in the gastrointestinal system of birds and mammals. In birds, the digestive system anatomically completes the formation in the embryonic period, and in the period after hatching. Morphological and physiological differences with nutrition are formed and functionalized. The present study aimed to evaluate immunohistochemical distribution and localization of endocrine cells in the digestive tract of chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar) using antisera against serotonin, somatostatin, gastrin, and glucagon. In this study, after 20 chukar partridges were slaughtered, organs of the digestive system were obtained and stained for immunohistochemical analysis. In our …
