Entertainment Consolidation, Content Monopolies, And The Future Of Information, Emily Faro
Entertainment Consolidation, Content Monopolies, And The Future Of Information, Emily Faro
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company has raised significant antitrust concerns, as it exemplifies the challenges of modern media consolidation. This horizontal merger has substantially increased Disney's market power, particularly in the entertainment industry, leading to potential anticompetitive effects. The note argues that current U.S. antitrust laws, primarily designed to address historical monopolies, are inadequate in handling the complexities of contemporary media mergers, which often involve both horizontal and vertical integration. The analysis emphasizes the need for updated legal frameworks to consider the broader, long-term impacts of such mergers on competition and innovation.

The Ordinary Authors Of The Bureau Of New Plays: Copyright And Reallocating Authority In The American Theatre (1936-1949), Brent Salter
The Ordinary Authors Of The Bureau Of New Plays: Copyright And Reallocating Authority In The American Theatre (1936-1949), Brent Salter
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
This Article examines the brief history of the Bureau of New Plays, a nonprofit enterprise funded in 1936 by seven major Hollywood film studios and administered by the Theatre Guild's Theresa Helburn, to identify and develop talented young American playwrights. A study of the Bureau of New Plays provides a window into the authority that playwrights, and particularly younger writers, exercised over the work they created. In one respect, the establishment of the Bureau of New Plays complemented American copyright's general trajectory toward the expansion of the rights of the individual author, and in the context of the theatre the …
Modern Dance, Embodiment, And Society: The Graham Technique’S Resistance To Conditioned Physicality, Cara Mcmanus
Modern Dance, Embodiment, And Society: The Graham Technique’S Resistance To Conditioned Physicality, Cara Mcmanus
Dissertations and Theses
Martha Graham, foremost pioneer of American Modern dance, is the originator and developer of what is known today as the Graham technique. When this technique is removed from performative contexts, the philosophy of its practice can add insight to a discussion of embodiment and what it means to resist socially prescribed embodiments. This paper will examine the ways in which the Graham technique cultivates awareness of embodiment’s origins and processual nature, and therefore how a conscious resistance to social conditioning can arise. The neuroscientific and physiological processes behind this cultivation of awareness will be discussed, and several examples of resistance …
Alternate Load Paths And Retrofits For Long-Span Truss Bridges Under Sudden Member Loss And Blast Loads, Huihui Li
Dissertations and Theses
In current bridge design practices, due to the existence of alternate load paths (ALPs), continued stability and progressive collapse-resistance of long-span bridges following the initialed loss of a critical member can be attributed to “redundancy”. However, “redundancy”, also indicated as the post member failure behavior of long-span bridges is not well understood and is not explicitly considered, especially for long-span truss bridges. As one of the most famous collapse events that took place recently, collapse of the I-35W truss bridge has demonstrated the vulnerabilities of long-span truss bridges, and their societal and economic consequences under the abnormal events, such as …
Ethnic Conflict In Côte D’Ivoire, Ayouba Doumbia
Ethnic Conflict In Côte D’Ivoire, Ayouba Doumbia
Dissertations and Theses
Since the early days of independence, the African continent has been the theatre of many ethnic conflicts. While people, in general, assume these conflicts to be political and blame the conflicts on authoritarian regimes, they dismissed the fact that conflict between ethnicities is a phenomenon that has occurred for hundreds of years and in all corners of the Earth. Entire countries have been devastated by years of ethnic strife. Once ethnic conflict breaks out, it is difficult to stop. Conflicts in the Balkans, Rwanda, Chechnya, Iraq, and Darfur are among the deadliest examples from the late 20th and early …
Hamburger Helper Recipes, John Alex Goss
Hamburger Helper Recipes, John Alex Goss
Theses and Dissertations
Hamburger Helper Recipes is a collection of essays and public addresses that aim to recuperate castoff and misfit material surrounding industries and tools which produce science-fiction fantasies, specifically videogames and television shows. The following essays confront the normative violence of capitalism, whiteness, and hetero-patriarchy that socially and technologically haunt these imaginary worlds and build hegemonic idealogy into their audiences. This collection takes industrial materials and software from their intended commercial purposes of production and “success” into places of abjection and quiet breakdown. The author’s own proximity to masculine and often toxic "work cultures'' within industrial spaces of coding and manufacturing …

The Living Theatre Of Horror: Examining How Centuries Of Western Theatrical Practice And Theory Inform The Modern-Day Haunted House, Scott Dittman
The Living Theatre Of Horror: Examining How Centuries Of Western Theatrical Practice And Theory Inform The Modern-Day Haunted House, Scott Dittman
Theses and Dissertations
This work will discuss the growing modern phenomenon of theme park and regional haunt events in the United States. In it, we will explore the history of how horror has been presented on stage, the themes within horror that creators grapple with, and how by using traditional theatrical elements creators of modern haunt events are able to make the audience a part of the story, transforming them from passive observers of the scenarios presented to complicit participants. How does the history of horror theatre inform the production of modern haunt events (and how has a global pandemic affected them), what …
Tya And Educational Outreach In Higher Education: An Asset To Undergraduates And Their Community, Emily J. Mattison
Tya And Educational Outreach In Higher Education: An Asset To Undergraduates And Their Community, Emily J. Mattison
Theses and Dissertations
Undergraduate students pursuing a career in theatre are at the beginning of their life-long training and understanding and appreciation for the art. Performing in a Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) touring production alongside the responsibility of crafting educational outreach opportunities provides the students with a unique chance to comprehend the art they have chosen to devote their lives to. This paper details the value of offering a course I crafted entitled “TYA Educational Outreach”, for both the undergraduates enrolled and the community they would be reaching. While undergraduates develop an understanding of the impact theatre can have on an individual …

Trauma Prevention & Best Practices In Performance Classrooms, Laine D. Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This thesis has been constructed to create a trauma-informed teaching method to be used within performance classrooms at the college level. The first chapter starts by defining trauma and walking the reader through the neuroscience behind trauma. Next, the code of ethics created by the National Educational Association is examined and a definition for best practices within the classroom is outlined. Finally, this chapter concludes with a definition of emotional abuse that brings all the concepts together and explains how they are interlaced.
The next chapter is dedicated to learning more about the percentage of actors who have experienced …

Types of play are referenced from developmental psychology research and organized within the site with consideration of age. Designing for Play exists on multiple layers within the project. Directly designing …
“There’S Rosemary, That’S For Remembrance:” Suicide Ideation And Portraying Ophelia’S Madness, Ian M. Borden, Sarah Imes Borden
“There’S Rosemary, That’S For Remembrance:” Suicide Ideation And Portraying Ophelia’S Madness, Ian M. Borden, Sarah Imes Borden
Quidditas
Ophelia’s madness in Hamlet is too often portrayed or understood in a generalized fashion. Historical analysis of the play, as well as historical and recent reviews of Ophelia’s performance show how Ophelia has been considered a character controlled by outside forces, and her madness lacking direction or purpose. Applying the concept of suicide ideation to the character’s actions illuminates both our historical understanding of the character, and provides modern day performers a cohesive and focused model from which to draw.

The study also provides an overview of state and regional policies and programs relevant to teacher retention, and includes evaluations of existing policies and initiatives to determine efficacy and cost benefit. Teacher shortages continue to be a problem in the United States. While a range of policy solutions have attempted to stem the loss of teachers, at the base of many of these efforts is the …
Tailoring Public Health Policies, Govind Persad
Tailoring Public Health Policies, Govind Persad
Publications
In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, many states and countries have adopted public health restrictions on activities previously considered commonplace: crossing state borders, eating indoors, gathering together, and even leaving one's home. These policies often focus on specific activities or groups, rather than imposing the same limits across the board. In this Article, I consider the law and ethics of these policies, which I call tailored policies. In Part II, I identify two types of tailored policies: activity-based and group-based. Activity-based restrictions respond to differences in the risks and benefits of specific activities, such as walking outdoors and …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The present study aims to investigate and compare language use in film scripts of American mainstream movies and in Noah Baumbach's, focusing on lexical bundles and their functional contributions to meanings and aesthetic values of the given texts. Two corpora were compiled as the datasets: Mainstream Film Corpus (MFC), which consists of 100 screenplays of top Hollywood blockbusters during 2005-2019, and Noah Baumbach Corpus (NBC), which contains five film scripts written by Noah Baumbach alone. Frequent four-word lexical bundles were extracted and approached qualitatively in terms of their functions, following Biber et al. (2004) and Biber (2006) as analytical frameworks. …

The objective of this work is to assess the effectiveness in reducing airborne particles of the Camfil® CC410-concealed air exhaust system, that is installed in the ER-1 ambulance (a King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital ambulance). This is done by diffusing aerosols into the cabin at the patient’s face position for an injection period (IP) of 1 minute and measuring the aerosol concentration inside the cabin over time. The experiment is conducted for 2 ventilation conditions, when the exhaust system is off (Minimal Ventilation: MV) and at maximum speed (High Ventilation: HV). Density of the aerosol is interpreted in terms of its …
