Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The dramaturgy written by Cuban American, Puerto Rican, and Dominican American women propels Hispanic-Caribbean theater beyond the geographical borders of their islands, thus creating and nurturing, transnational cultural enclaves that support it while also transforming the cultural theatrical environment of the United States. This dramaturgy, with its themes and arguments, puts into practice the feminist and LGBTQ critical theories with a focus on minority groups in US society. This work analyzes Hispanic-Caribbean theater traditions from their origins to the transformations they undergo in the United States given the influence of the various Caribbean diasporas. The essential characteristics of this drama, …

9/11 In Selected American Plays: Postmodern & Postcolonial Encounters, Shaimaa M. Saeed

English Language and Literature

History immortalised the date 9/11 as it witnessed the sudden attacks on one of the world’s superpowers, the United States of America. The repercussions of this date boomed in the world’s four corners leaving behind feelings of insecurity and fears of the unknown in all aspects of life to the extent that the literary contexts along with political, economic, and social ones were impacted. This book probes into postmodernism and postcolonialism, as two interrelated literary approaches having many intersecting points, to unravel the psychological, political, and social significance of the 9/11 events as depicted in selected American plays: The Mercy …

Quantification Of Bacterial Shedding From The Respiratory Tract Of Health Care Workers Wearing Paprs And Other Types Of Air-Purifying Respirators On Sterile Conditions In A Simulated Operating Rooms (Ors), Segun Olanrewaju Ajewole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The role of powered air- purifying respirators (PAPRs) in healthcare settings during infectious diseases outbreaks and highly contagious pathogens (e.g., SARS, HINI, Ebola, COVID etc.) has attracted much interest based on the level of respiratory protection they provide and their many positive user features. A common practice among healthcare workers to minimize airborne contaminant exposure has been to use surgical masks or N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). Surgical masks have been shown to offer minimal respiratory protection and while N95 FFRs offer better respiratory protection, they are not comfortable to use for a prolonged period. With current PAPR designs, exhaled …

A Selected Analytical Bibliography Of Works For Saxophone By Composers Associated With The Darmstadt International Summer Courses For New Music: 1946-2021, Christopher Mark Delouis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although the saxophone is one of the most recently invented concert instruments, countless pieces of music have been written for it. This document aims to contribute to the established scholarship that examines and highlights existing saxophone repertoire, by looking specifically at composers associated with the Darmstadt International Summer Courses. Bruce Ronkin’s Londeix Guide to the Saxophone Repertoire 1844-2012 is a standard resource for the 21st century saxophonist to have. It includes some, but not all, compositions for saxophone written before 2012. By looking at this specific set of composers, with many who are alive today, this document is able to …

Francis Poulenc: The Compositional Influences Of Les Six And Sergei Prokofiev On The Poulenc Oboe Sonata (1962), Evan Klein

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research document contextualizes the compositional influences found within Francis Poulenc’s oboe sonata. In his lifetime, Poulenc was an extremely well-connected individual, often dedicating his works to his close friends and patrons. The Sonata for Oboe and Piano, in particular, is one of these compositions dedicated to his friend and famous composer Sergei Prokofiev. Written in 1962 toward the end of Poulenc’s life, he glanced back to the start of the twentieth century for inspiration and source material. The oboe sonata is then a collage of sorts—it takes on the shared contextual principles of Les Six in which he was …

Redefining The Cybernetic Being: Reconstructing The Theatrical Origins Of The Contemporary Metropolis, Samuel Goodman Jan 2021

Redefining The Cybernetic Being: Reconstructing The Theatrical Origins Of The Contemporary Metropolis, Samuel Goodman

Architecture Theses

We live in the information age. This means that our collective existence lies within a global society supported by an economy that is almost entirely structured by information technology, the study or use of systems for storing, retrieving, and sending information. This has led to a modernization of global data into a rigid system of, inputs and outputs. We have all unknowingly become an array of transistors in a system based on efficiency and results. The introduction of developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence has resulted in an even more systemic process whose sole purpose is to see the …

Space Sky Earth: Weather Learning Museum And Research Center, Benjamin Gutowski

Architecture Theses

A rainstorm now and again can be a calming experience. With our climate changing and a focus on more sustainable built projects, we can only wonder if it is enough to help offset the carbon footprint that architects create. Through the creation of a research facility to monitor and observe natural phenomena, researchers and the public can learn and study the weather and climate that surround us in our everyday lives. The building itself will be used as a learning tool by integrating sustainable building practices mixed with interactive spaces to learn about green building. The three areas of focus …

Revolution, Spencer Bumby Jan 2021

Revolution, Spencer Bumby

Architecture Theses

How can we design stadiums to better serve their communities: visually, physically, and financially? In the last decade, there has been a trend in the United States to design and build soccer-specific stadiums for Major League Soccer (MLS) teams. While most teams now have a soccer-specific stadium, there are few teams who have not yet followed on the trend due to no immediate desire to move to a new venue. Like most stadiums and arenas, the general public does not view the public funding of them in a favorable manner. This is due to their increasing costs and lack of …

The Cathedral Of Consciousness: The Liminal Dimension Of Dreams And Meditative Thinking, Justin Todd Jan 2021

The Cathedral Of Consciousness: The Liminal Dimension Of Dreams And Meditative Thinking, Justin Todd

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores how architecture can redefine the human relationship to consciousness and how we experience consciousness itself. Specifically, this project will address different ways to bring participants face to face with our growing disconnect between perceptual experience and what we call reality. In other words, the Cathedral of Consciousness is a place for meditative thinking, showing how our current culture is headed down a destructive path, discounting particular modalities of perceiving a highly externalized and vision dominated world. Our reductive school of thought has changed the way we think and act, especially in terms of dreams. We have become …

Vaccine Skeptical Mothers In The Upper Midwest And Their Kitchen-Based Care Practices, Kimberly Allison Haarstick

Sociology and Anthropology

While many Americans view vaccination and medical intervention as benefits to society and for the greater good, vaccine skeptical mothers not only reject vaccinations but most biomedical interventions as well. In place of biomedical interactions vaccine skeptical mothers here focused on daily care practices centered around a healthy diet and eating whole foods. Further, they then create alternative forms of care that are founded in their kitchens and based on their own expertise as mothers, rather than with the expertise of biomedical experts. Based on nineteen months of in-person and virtual ethnographic research in a mid-size Upper Midwestern city in …

A Performance Guide To Prokofiev: Romeo And Juliet For Solo Tuba, John Christopher Dicesare Jan 2021

A Performance Guide To Prokofiev: Romeo And Juliet For Solo Tuba, John Christopher Dicesare

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the most recent brass instrument to be added to the standard orchestra, the tuba’s solo repertoire is relatively new compared to other orchestral instruments. Ralph Vaughan Williams composed the first major concerto for tuba in 1954, over 100 years after the tuba’s creation in 1835 by Wilhelm Friedrich Wieprecht and Johann Gottfried Moritz. Though many composers — including Bruce Broughton, Eric Ewazen, Paul Hindemith, Gunther Schuller, and John Williams — have written solos for the tuba since Vaughan Williams, performers rely on arrangements and transcriptions of existing works to fill gaps in the repertoire. In 2011, Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s …

Beyond The Social: Artist Project Spaces, 2003 To 2016., Clare L. Van Loenen

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines storefront project spaces in the early 2000s that offered alternative approaches to the programming, organizing, and archiving found in conventional museums. I propose that such sites impacted participatory visual culture by offering a reformulatory role for arts’ practices, one that organized itself across disciplinary boundaries, chose a collaborative rather than competitive approach, and processed the ideological implications of their group work. Focused on three specific sites—Machine Project in Los Angeles, Elsewhere in Greensboro, and Mess Hall in Chicago—this study details the museological, pedagogical, and archival challenges of these artist-convened organizations. My interdisciplinary investigation offers a reference point …

Ex-Tensions: Material Entanglement And Intensities, Zohreh Galdizadeh Garmeh

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration of the intrinsic capacity of matter and material formations and utilization of art as a mode of inquiry. "If You Can Afford Me": Reconceptualizing Expert Testimony Offered To Calculate Music Copyright Damages, Amanda Inglesh Jan 2021

"If You Can Afford Me": Reconceptualizing Expert Testimony Offered To Calculate Music Copyright Damages, Amanda Inglesh

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note argues that expert testimony in music copyright infringement cases often leads to unreliable damages calculations and undue prejudice, undermining the fairness and balance intended by copyright law. It advocates for stricter evidentiary standards and the use of neutral, court-appointed experts to address these issues and ensure that damages awards align with the purpose of copyright law, which is to compensate creators without stifling artistic creativity.
