Using Gated Recurrent Units For Selective Harmonic Current Mitigation-Pwm In Grid-Tied Cascaded H-Bridge Converters, Morteza Dabbaghjamanesh, Amirhossein Moeini, Jonathan Kimball, Jie Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Grid-tied converters become more popular for electric vehicle, renewable energy, and energy storage systems applications. Different modulation techniques such as low-frequency (e.g., selective harmonic elimination-PWM, selective harmonic mitigation-PWM, and selective harmonic current mitigation-PWM (SHCM-PWM)) and high-frequency modulation techniques (e.g., phase shift-PWM and space vector modulation) are used in the literature for grid-tied converters. Low-frequency modulation techniques have a high-efficiency due to the low-switching power losses. One of the main challenges of low-frequency modulation techniques such as SHCM-PWM is how to implement the proposed technique in real-time, due to the transcendental Fourier equations of SHCM-PWM. In this paper, a deep learning …

Prediction Intervals For Fractionally Integrated Time Series And Volatility Models, Rukman Ekanayake Jan 2021

Prediction Intervals For Fractionally Integrated Time Series And Volatility Models, Rukman Ekanayake

Doctoral Dissertations

"The two of the main formulations for modeling long range dependence in volatilities associated with financial time series are fractionally integrated generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (FIGARCH) and hyperbolic generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (HYGARCH) models. The traditional methods of constructing prediction intervals for volatility models, either employ a Gaussian error assumption or are based on asymptotic theory. However, many empirical studies show that the distribution of errors exhibit leptokurtic behavior. Therefore, the traditional prediction intervals developed for conditional volatility models yield poor coverage. An alternative is to employ residual bootstrap-based prediction intervals. One goal of this dissertation research is to develop …

The Implementation Of Energy Sharing Using A System Of Systems Approach, Julia Morgan Jan 2021

The Implementation Of Energy Sharing Using A System Of Systems Approach, Julia Morgan

Doctoral Dissertations

"There is an increasing demand for renewable energy and consumers need more procurement options to meet their needs. Energy sharing provides a peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace where prosumer electricity is redistributed to fellow energy-sharing community participants. This redistribution of prosumer electricity provides consumers with additional electricity suppliers, while also decreasing the load on the utility company. Though significant progress has been made regarding research and implementation of energy sharing, there is still room for growth when evaluating energy-sharing communities and defining appropriate community coordination based on end-user needs. The first contribution in this work identified nine characteristics of energy-sharing communities as …

Stability Analysis Of Microgrids Using Markov Jump Linear Systems, Gilles Mpembele Jan 2021

Stability Analysis Of Microgrids Using Markov Jump Linear Systems, Gilles Mpembele

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research discusses stochastic models for a microgrid operating between standalone and grid-tied modes. The transitions between different modes are modeled as a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC). In each operating mode, the system is modeled using conventional differential algebraic equations (DAEs), linearized around some equilibrium point.

In Topic-I, a model is developed using the Stochastic Hybrid Systems (SHSs) formulation. The microgrid is modeled as a Markov jump linear system (MJLS), which is a type of SHS in which the discrete events evolve according to a Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC). The model allows for the derivation of Ordinary Differential Equations …

Protection Of Modern Distribution Systems, Fahd Amin Hariri Jan 2021

Protection Of Modern Distribution Systems, Fahd Amin Hariri

Doctoral Dissertations

“Motivated by the potential for improvements in the electric distribution system’s protection schemes, this work examined the challenges facing protection schemes due to the integration of Distributed Generators (DGs). Traditional protection schemes for radial distribution systems were designed based on the unidirectional power flow from the source down to the loads. Protective devices typically use are overcurrent relays, autoreclosers, fuses, and circuit breakers. However, these protective schemes may no longer be sufficient to ensure correct operation in the new era of distribution systems integrated by DGs. This research investigated the impact of DGs that might mislead the protection schemes in …

An Investigation On The Regulation Of The Tweak–Fn14–Nf-Kb Pathway, Jawahar Khetan Jan 2021

An Investigation On The Regulation Of The Tweak–Fn14–Nf-Kb Pathway, Jawahar Khetan

Doctoral Dissertations

“Dysregulation of inflammatory pathways is strongly implicated in cancers and autoimmune diseases. The most consequential of these pathways involves the nuclear translocation of NF-kB, a transcription factor that induces the transcription of multiple proteins associated with cell survival, inflammation, proliferation and death. It is activated when the fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 kDa protein (Fn14), a trimeric receptor recruits its ligand, TWEAK. Studies have shown that Fn14 is over-expressed in many tumors, the aggressiveness of which is often correlated with the degree of upregulation. Furthermore, TWEAK-Fn14 activation has been shown to result in persistent NF-kB activation. Using a mechanistic model of …

“The continued development of small satellites (SmallSats) has made them an increasingly viable mission alternative to traditional monolithic spacecraft. Constellations, swarms, and formations of these small spacecraft have the potential to fill unique gaps in the space systems architecture, while reducing overall mission costs and increasing mission redundancy. Cooperative navigation between spacecraft within swarms and formations is critical to mission success, but poses many challenges for SmallSats due to their size, mass, power, and computing constraints. While Earth orbiting missions can rely on GNSS data for high-accuracy inertial and relative navigation, deep space missions require new navigation techniques. In this …

Towards A Control-Centric Account Of Tort Liability For Automated Vehicles, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh Jan 2021

Towards A Control-Centric Account Of Tort Liability For Automated Vehicles, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Existing motor vehicle accident laws are generally described as ‘driver-centric’, since regulatory, liability, and insurance obligations revolve around drivers. This is sometimes taken to imply that they cannot apply to automated vehicles. This article seeks to re-centre the liability discussion around the tortious doctrine of control. It argues centrally that properly understanding legal control as influence over metaphysical risks, rather than physical objects, clarifies that automated vehicles are both legally controllable in theory, despite having no human drivers, and legally controlled in practice, despite their reliance on machine learning. Examining today’s automated driving technology and businesses, this article demonstrates how …

Identifying Consumer Preferences From User-Generated Content On Amazon.Com By Leveraging Machine Learning, Jikhan Jeong Jan 2021

Identifying Consumer Preferences From User-Generated Content On Amazon.Com By Leveraging Machine Learning, Jikhan Jeong

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inexperienced consumers may have high uncertainty about experience goods that require technical knowledge and skills to operate effectively; therefore, experienced consumers' prior reviews can be useful for inexperienced consumers. However, one-sided review systems (e.g., Amazon) only provide the opportunity for consumers to write a review as a buyer and contain no feedback from the seller's side, so the information displayed about individual buyers is limited. Therefore, this study analyzes consumers' digital footprints (DFs) for programmable thermostats to identify and predict unobserved consumer preferences, using a dataset of 141 million Amazon reviews. This paper proposes novel approaches (1) to identify unobserved …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Poor water solubility, off-target toxicity, and small therapeutic window are among major obstacles for the development of drug products. Redox-responsive drug delivery nanoplatforms not only overcome the delivery and pharmacokinetic pitfalls observed in conventional drug delivery but also leverage the site-specific delivery properties. Cleavable diselenide and disulfide bonds in the presence of elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione concentration are among widely used stimuli-responsive bonds to design nanocarriers. This review covers a wide range of redox-responsive chemical structures and their properties for designing nanoparticles aiming controlled loading, delivery, and release of hydrophobic anticancer drugs at tumor site.

Exploiting Semantic Embedding And Visual Feature For Facial Action Unit Detection, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin, Yi Zhou, Jiuxiang Gu Jan 2021

Exploiting Semantic Embedding And Visual Feature For Facial Action Unit Detection, Huiyuan Yang, Lijun Yin, Yi Zhou, Jiuxiang Gu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent study on detecting facial action units (AU) has utilized auxiliary information (i.e., facial landmarks, relationship among AUs and expressions, web facial images, etc.), in order to improve the AU detection performance. As of now, no semantic information of AUs has yet been explored for such a task. As a matter of fact, AU semantic descriptions provide much more information than the binary AU labels alone, thus we propose to exploit the Semantic Embedding and Visual feature (SEV-Net) for AU detection. More specifically, AU semantic embeddings are obtained through both Intra-AU and Inter-AU attention modules, where the Intra-AU attention module …

Estimating Infant Hip Joint Moments Using A Novel Musculoskeletal Model, Yeram Lim, Victor Huayamave, Christine Walck, Erin Mannen, Safeer Siddicky

Publications

Musculoskeletal models offer a convenient method to non-invasively study human development, function, and pathologies. While adult musculoskeletal models have been extensively studied [1], infant populations have been widely underserved. However, understanding infant joint biomechanics during the first year of life is vital considering abnormal loads may be detrimental to growth and development. Joint moments from an infant musculoskeletal model could help assess pathologies such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Previous computational studies involving infant biomechanics [2, 3] lacked the modeling of active muscle response which may affect musculoskeletal development [4]. As such, the purpose of this study is …

Impact Of Post-Hospital Discharge Follow-Up Phone Calls On 30-Day Readmission Rates, Sabina Kadariya

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Introduction: The rate at which patients get readmitted to any hospital within 30-days of their initial admission is known as the 30-day hospital readmission rate. These readmission rates are costly but can be prevented. The two common causes for hospital readmissions include lack of understanding regarding patient medications and postdischarge follow-up with the provider. Post-discharge follow-up calls help to clear these misunderstandings and is beneficial in reducing readmission rates.
Methods: The literature search was conducted through the website of NIH National Library of Medicine, PubMed database and Google Scholar search using the keywords listed below. The review of 36 peer-reviewed, …

Investigating The Effect Of Operating Condition On Esd-Induced Soft-Failures, Omid Hoseini Izadi Jan 2021

Investigating The Effect Of Operating Condition On Esd-Induced Soft-Failures, Omid Hoseini Izadi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Conflicting observations have been found in the literature regarding the effect of operating conditions on ESD (electrostatic discharge) susceptibility. While some studies have suggested a strong correlation between the two, others observed little to no correlation. In this work, a systematic study has been carried out suggesting the existence of a strong correlation between the ESD susceptibility and operating conditions. It is found that the root cause of this conflict is random ESD noise injection. A measurement approach is proposed to synchronize the noise injection with the system activity such as high/low CPU load. In this approach, the current consumption …
