Hannah Arendt Meets Qanon: Conspiracy, Ideology, And The Collapse Of Common Sense, David Luban Jan 2021

Hannah Arendt Meets Qanon: Conspiracy, Ideology, And The Collapse Of Common Sense, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A June 2020 survey found one in four Americans agreeing that “powerful people intentionally planned the coronavirus outbreak.” In fall 2020, seven percent said they believe the elaborate and grotesque mythology of QAnon; another eleven percent were unsure whether they believe it. November and December 2020 found tens of millions of Americans believing in election-theft plots that would require superhuman levels of coordination and secrecy among dozens, perhaps hundreds, of otherwise-unconnected and unidentified miscreants.

Conspiracy theories are nothing new, and they raise a question that preoccupied Hannah Arendt in The Origins of Totalitarianism: whatever happened to common sense? Arendt …

Screening Of The Small Molecule Library Of Meinox Enables The Identification Of Anticancer Compounds In Pathologically Distinct Cancers, Aynura Mammadova, Ari̇f Mermer, Fati̇h Kocabaş

Turkish Journal of Biology

Small molecules are widely used for the modulation of the molecular basis of diseases. This makes them the perfect tool for discovering and developing new therapeutics. In this work, we have established a library of small molecules in house and characterized its molecular and druglike properties. We have shown that most small molecules have molecular weights less than 450. They have pharmaceutically relevant cLogP, cLogS, and druglikeness value distributions. In addition, Meinox's small molecule library contained small molecules with polar surface areas that are less than 60 square angstroms, suggesting their potent ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Meinox's small …

Phylostat: A Web-Based Tool To Analyze Paralogous Clade Divergencein Phylogenetic Trees, Eli̇f Özçeli̇k, Nurdan Kuru, Ogün Adebali̇ Jan 2021

Phylostat: A Web-Based Tool To Analyze Paralogous Clade Divergencein Phylogenetic Trees, Eli̇f Özçeli̇k, Nurdan Kuru, Ogün Adebali̇

Turkish Journal of Biology

Phylogenetic trees are useful tools to infer evolutionary relationships between genetic entities. Phylogenetics enables not only evolution-based gene clustering but also the assignment of gene duplication and deletion events to the nodes when coupled with statistical approaches such as bootstrapping. However, extensive gene duplication and deletion events bring along a challenge in interpreting phylogenetic trees and require manual inference. In particular, there has been no robust method of determining whether one of the paralog clades systematically shows higher divergence following the gene duplication event as a sign of functional divergence. Here, we provide Phylostat, a graphical user interface that enables …

Race And Property Law, K-Sue Park Jan 2021

Race And Property Law, K-Sue Park

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This chapter offers an outline for understanding the key role of race in producing property values in the history of the American property law system. It identifies major developments in the mutually formative relationship between race and property in America that made and remade property interests in America through the processes of 1) dispossessing nonwhites, 2) degrading their homelands, communities, and selves, and 3) limiting their efforts to enter public space and occupy or acquire property within the regime thereby established. First, it describes the use of law to create the two most important forms of property in the colonies …

Trademarks As Surveillance Transparency, Amanda Levendowski Jan 2021

Trademarks As Surveillance Transparency, Amanda Levendowski

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

We know very little about the technologies that watch us. From cell site simulators to predictive policing algorithms, the lack of transparency around surveillance technologies makes it difficult for the public to engage in meaningful oversight. Legal scholars have critiqued various corporate and law enforcement justifications for surveillance opacity, including contract and intellectual property law. But the public needs a free, public, and easily accessible source of information about corporate technologies that might be used to watch us. To date, the literature has overlooked a free, extensive, and easily accessible source of information about surveillance technologies hidden in plain sight: …

Review On Resistive Switching Mechanisms Of Bio-Organic Thin Film For Non-Volatile Memory Application, Kuan Yew Cheong, Ilias Ait Tayeb, Feng Zhao, Jafri Malin Abdullah

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Bio-organic, as one of the sustainable and bioresorbable materials, has been used as an active thin film in producing resistive switching random access memory (RRAM) due to its specialized properties. This type of nonvolatile memory consists of a simple unit structure with the processed and solidified bio-organic-based thin film sandwiched between two electrodes. Its memory characteristics are significantly affected by the resistive-switching mechanism. However, to date, the reported mechanisms are very diverse and scattered, and to our best knowledge, there is no literature that reviewed comprehensively the mechanisms of resistive switching in bio-organic-based thin films. Therefore, the objective of this …

High-Frequency Modeling Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Considering Internal Imbalances, Yuandong Guo, Muqi Ouyang, Zhifei Xu, Minho Kim, Junesang Lee, Jungrae Ha, Hyewon Lee, Sangwon Yun, Jun Fan, Hongseok Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an accurate high-frequency modeling methodology for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a vehicular electrical braking system is presented, which is suitable for analyzing various electromagnetic interference problems caused by a motor drive system. The proposed modeling approach is established according to the vector fitting technique and based on the S-parameter measurements of the PMSM. The equivalent circuit model of the PMSM converted from a measured S-parameter matrix can better describe the impedance characteristics of the three-phase PMSM under study compared to the existing equivalent circuit models because the imbalances inside the motor are taken into …

Dissing Ability, Tory L. Lucas Jan 2021

Dissing Ability, Tory L. Lucas

Lewis & Clark Law Review

People with disabilities have historically endured the horrors of exclusion and elimination because America has incessantly fixated on disability without seeing ability. To correct a disabling view of people with disabilities, this Article prescribes a paradigm shift that permanently redirects the focus from disability to ability. If America achieves this hopeful vision to no longer diss—or disrespect—ability, then people with disabilities will enjoy equal access to equal opportunity.

Vaccination And The Child’S Right To An Open Future, Elias Feldman Jan 2021

Vaccination And The Child’S Right To An Open Future, Elias Feldman

Lewis & Clark Law Review

States commonly require the vaccination of children through their parens pa- triae and police powers. But many states also allow parents to opt for non- medical exemptions from these vaccination requirements, contributing to the emergence of a national vaccine hesitancy crisis. By permitting parents not to vaccinate their children, do states that grant these exemptions violate children’s rights? This Article posits that children may indeed have a right to be vac- cinated and thus protected against contracting a disease for which there is a scientifically proven vaccine. This Article examines this question through the lens of Joel Feinberg’s theory of …

Stock Buyback Ability To Enhance Ceo Compensation: Theory, Evidence, And Policy Implications, Nitzan Shilon Jan 2021

Stock Buyback Ability To Enhance Ceo Compensation: Theory, Evidence, And Policy Implications, Nitzan Shilon

Lewis & Clark Law Review

I report that stock buyback ability to enhance CEO compensation has reached a record high amount corresponding to one-third of total pay. Also, I refute the common wisdom that this ability is attributed mainly to buyback impact on per share criteria that determine annual bonuses. Instead, I show that because of recent reforms in executive compensation design, the ability of buybacks to boost the amount of CEO stock-based compensation has become ten times higher than their potential to increase annual bonuses. I argue, first, that the potential of stock buybacks to enhance their compensation provides CEOs with incentives to conduct …

Noncitizen Voting: A Case Study Of Oregon, Monet Gonnerman, Ryan Willett

Lewis & Clark Law Review

Using the State of Oregon as a case study, this Article proposes that states and municipalities may and should extend the right to vote to noncitizens. The Article’s analysis, rooted in national history and the U.S. Constitution, is applicable to other states across the country. The Article situates the practice of noncitizen voting within the larger historical context of both the United States and Oregon. It also provides the legal framework that demonstrates state and municipal power to set voter qualifications for their respective elections. Finally, the Article suggests reasons why states should allow for noncitizen voting.

How Can We Achieve Accountability In Policing? The (Not-So-Secret) Ingredients To Effective Police Reform, Michael D. White, Henry F. Fradella, Michaela Flippin Jan 2021

How Can We Achieve Accountability In Policing? The (Not-So-Secret) Ingredients To Effective Police Reform, Michael D. White, Henry F. Fradella, Michaela Flippin

Lewis & Clark Law Review

The summer of 2020 was marked by a series of high-profile police killings of citizens, highlighting excessive force as the most pernicious form of racial injustice in American policing. The persistence of the excessive use of force problem over decades raises serious questions regarding what we know about police accountability, and has led some to argue for defunding or even abolishing the police. However, the roadmap to effective police accountability is tangible and known. In this Article, we delineate eight guiding principles and eight strate-

Flow And Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Turbulent Swirling Impinging Jets [Thesis], Muhammad Ikhlaq Jan 2021

Flow And Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Turbulent Swirling Impinging Jets [Thesis], Muhammad Ikhlaq

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Numerous industrial applications rely on impinging jets to impart convective heat and mass transfer in processes ranging from the cooling of electronic devices and gas turbine blades to drying of paper and food products. Conventionally, non-swirling impinging jets have been employed, but some studies have shown that inducing swirl allows better control of uniformity and improved convective fluxes. A better understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms that lead to such behaviour warrants deeper insights into the flow and heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets, both swirling and non-swirling. Whilst important to achieve, the flow field of an impinging jet is …

Digital Representation For Assessment Of Spoken Efl At University Level: A Case Study In Vietnam, Thi Bich Hiep Vu Jan 2021

Digital Representation For Assessment Of Spoken Efl At University Level: A Case Study In Vietnam, Thi Bich Hiep Vu

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Assessing the speaking performance of students who are studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) has mainly been conducted with face-to-face speaking tests. While such tests are undoubtedly interactive and authentic, they have been criticised for subjective scoring, as well as lacking an effective test delivery method and recordings for later review.

Technology has increasingly been integrated into speaking tests over the last decade and become known as computer-assisted or computer-based assessment of speaking. Although this method is widely acknowledged to measure certain aspects of language speaking effectively, such as pronunciation and grammar, it has not yet proved to be …

Energy And Throughput Efficient Strategies For Heterogeneous Future Communication Networks, Haitham El-Mohamdy Khaled Jan 2021

Energy And Throughput Efficient Strategies For Heterogeneous Future Communication Networks, Haitham El-Mohamdy Khaled

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

As a result of the proliferation of wireless-enabled user equipment and data-hungry applications, mobile data traffic has exponentially increased in recent years. This in-crease has not only forced mobile networks to compete on the scarce wireless spectrum but also to intensify their power consumption to serve an ever-increasing number of user devices. The Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) concept, where mixed types of low-power base stations coexist with large macro base stations, has emerged as a potential solution to address power consumption and spectrum scarcity challenges. However, as a consequence of their inflexible, constrained, and hardware-based configurations, HetNets have major limitations in adapting …

Towards An Evidence-Informed Differentiated Learning Consolidation Process To Support Classroom Instruction, Nicola Carr-White Jan 2021

Towards An Evidence-Informed Differentiated Learning Consolidation Process To Support Classroom Instruction, Nicola Carr-White

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Despite many years of teaching experience, the differentiation and consolidation of classroom learning presented challenges for the researcher. In response, a Differentiated Learning Consolidation Process (DLCP) was developed through informal classroom-based action research over several years. Using low cost and accessible resources, it developed into a manageable supplementary intervention to support individual student needs and the retention of classroom instruction. Increasing interest from colleagues led the researcher to provide professional development on the instructional design and implementation of the DLCP. Through this experience, it became apparent that the DLCP theoretical assumptions were largely unknown. The current study was pursued to …

Experimental And Cfd–Pbm Investigation Of An Agitated Bioreactor Using A Dual Helical Ribbon Impeller, Maryamsadat Amiraftabi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Throughout past decades, the management of solid waste by producing methane gas, as a renewable source of energy, has featured as an important research objective. Anaerobic digesters are widely used in countries with environmental initiatives and green approaches, where biogas produced from a bioreactor is a carbon neutral source of energy. Biogas contains 70% methane, 30% CO2 and some other gases. The by-product of an anaerobic digester is solid sludge that can be used as either fertilizer or compost.

Anaerobic digestion biogas plants can benefit industries by adding value to solid organic waste, reducing fossil fuel usage, eliminating solid waste …

Power Network And Smart Grids Analysis From A Graph Theoretic Perspective, Hossein Parast Vand Jan 2021

Power Network And Smart Grids Analysis From A Graph Theoretic Perspective, Hossein Parast Vand

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The growing size and complexity of power systems has given raise to the use of complex network theory in their modelling, analysis, and synthesis. Though most of the previous studies in this area have focused on distributed control through well established protocols like synchronization and consensus, recently, a few fundamental concepts from graph theory have also been applied, for example in symmetry-based cluster synchronization. Among the existing notions of graph theory, graph symmetry is the focus of this proposal. However, there are other development around some concepts from complex network theory such as graph clustering in the study.

In spite …

An Assessment Of Health Hazards Associated With The Use Of Water Mist Systems As A Cooling Intervention In Australia, Edmore Masaka Jan 2021

An Assessment Of Health Hazards Associated With The Use Of Water Mist Systems As A Cooling Intervention In Australia, Edmore Masaka

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Water mist systems (WMS) installed and used for cooling ambient temperatures in public places fall within the category of premise plumbing. Premise plumbing refers to the water distribution networks that lie downstream of the water meter, and within buildings. The colonization of premise plumbing by opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) such as Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Mycobacterium avium, Acanthamoeba and Naegleria fowleri is emerging as a challenge for public health and water quality management. Contrary to other premise plumbing features like showers and domestic taps that have been implicated in various waterborne infections, the health risks associated with WMS are …
