Development Of A 2d Numerical Model For Pollutant Transport Using Ftcs Scheme And Numerical Filter, Tias Ravena Maitsa, Qalbi Hafiyyan, Mohammad Bagus Adityawan, Ikha Magdalena, Arno Adi Kuntoro, Hadi Kardhana

Makara Journal of Technology

This study used the finite difference method to develop a numerical model for pollutant transport phenomenon simulation. Mathematically, the phenomenon is often described by the advection–diffusion differential equation, which is obtained from a combination of the continuity equation and Fick’s first law. The Forward Time Central Space (FTCS) scheme is one of the explicit finite difference methods and is used in this study to solve the model due to its simplicity in solving a differential equation. Yet, this method is currently unstable, which results in oscillations in the model. Thus, a numerical filter (Hansen) is added to the FTCS method …

Assessing The E-Learning Readiness Of Universities In Developing Countries And Expected Obstacles, Abdelrahim Ate, Samar Zaineldeenc, Cai Zhaohui, Yan Zhao

Makara Journal of Technology

To benefit from electronic learning (E-learning), organizations should execute considerable upfront analysis to ascertain their E-learning readiness. Studies have demonstrated a range of models that have been adapted, but they are used in developed counties for whom E-learning readiness is elevated. Thus, these models are not valid in growing countries, such as Sudan. Based on a modified model, this research was performed descriptively by applying a questionnaire-based survey method to assess the level of Sudan universities’ readiness in the employment of the E-learning system. This modified model includes social support, technology readiness, attitude toward E-learning, acceptance of E-learning, and individual …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

FDA has approved several cell-based therapeutics and hundreds of cell therapy clinical trials are ongoing. Cells will be a significant type of medicine after small molecule and protein drugs. However, several obstacles need to be addressed to achieve the widespread use of cellular therapeutics. The first challenge is the low efficacy of cell transplantation due to low retention, survival, integration, and function of cells in vivo. The second challenge is producing a massive number of cells for clinical treatment with cost-effectively and reproducibly technologies.

In this thesis, we proposed and investigated two approaches to address these challenges. To begin …

Multi-Objective Optimisation Of The Benchmark Wind Farm Layout Problem, Pawel L. Manikowski, David J. Walker, Matthew J. Craven

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Wind farm layout optimisation has become a very challenging and widespread problem in recent years. In many publications, the main goal is to achieve the maximum power output and minimum wind farm cost. This may be accomplished by applying single or multi-objective optimisation techniques. In this paper, we apply a single objective hill-climbing algorithm (HCA) and three multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (NSGA-II, SPEA2 and PESA-II) to a well-known benchmark optimisation problem proposed by Mosetti et al., which includes three different wind scenarios. We achieved better results by applying single- and multi-objective algorithms. Furthermore, we showed that the best performing multi-objective algorithm …

Abstract: The higher education sector has been heavily impacted financially by the economic downturn caused by the pandemic that has resulted a decline in student enrollments. Finding cost-effective novel technology for storing and sharing student's credentials among academic institutions and potential employers is a demand. Within the current conventional approach, ensuring authentication of a candidate’s credentials is costly and time-consuming which gives burdens to thousands of prospective students and potential employees. As a result, candidates fail to secure opportunities for either delay or non-submission of credentials all over the world. Blockchain technology has the potential for students' control over their …

Developing A Practice In Remote Sensing For Next-Generation Human Rights Researchers, Theresa Harris, Jonathan Drake, Umesh K. Haritashya, Wumi Asubiaro Dada, Fredy Cumes Dec 2021

Developing A Practice In Remote Sensing For Next-Generation Human Rights Researchers, Theresa Harris, Jonathan Drake, Umesh K. Haritashya, Wumi Asubiaro Dada, Fredy Cumes

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Remote sensing is increasingly recognized as an important tool for documenting human rights abuses. When used alongside interviews, case studies, surveys, forensic science, and other well-established research methods in human rights and humanitarian practice, remotely sensed data can effectively geolocate and establish chronologies for mass graves, forced displacement, destruction of cultural heritage sites, and other violations. But as a highly technical field of science that relies on ever-changing technologies, remote sensing and geospatial analysis are not readily accessible for human rights and humanitarian practitioners. The community of practice grew out of innovative work by practitioners at NGOs and specialized inter-governmental …

Covid-19, The Sustainable Development Goals, And The Right To Science, Nathaniel Weisenberg

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Across the globe, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated long-standing inequalities in access to treatment (such as vaccinations), access to reliable scientific information, scientific literacy, and much more. One promising approach to chart a more equitable response to the pandemic and future international health crises is to articulate the connections between the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a human right that has garnered increased attention among scholars, activists, and the human rights community: the right to science.

Both the SDGs – adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015 – and the right to science, included in the Universal …

A Material’S Perspective: Developing A Transient Framework For Understanding Nonlinear Rheological Responses, Simon Rogers Dec 2021

A Material’S Perspective: Developing A Transient Framework For Understanding Nonlinear Rheological Responses, Simon Rogers

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

In this talk, I will present a rheological framework for understanding yield stress fluid rheology that is commensurate with recent rheo-SANS studies of self-assembled soft systems. The new approach describes responses in terms of instantaneous recoverable and unrecoverable strains that can be determined by iteratively performing constrained recovery steps during traditional rheological characterizations. I will show how the results of these new experiments elucidate the physics underlying yield stress fluid phenomena, and also provide insight into the phenomenon of mechanical memory observed in colloidal glasses, emulsions, and foams. The lessons learned from these experimental results have led to the development …
