Captain Hugh Young's Map Of Jackson's 1818 Seminole Campaign In Florida, Alcione M. Amos
Captain Hugh Young's Map Of Jackson's 1818 Seminole Campaign In Florida, Alcione M. Amos
Florida Historical Quarterly
Recently on a visit to the cartographic division of the National Archives in Washington, the author was shown the map drawn by Captain Hugh Young of the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers to accompany his “A Topographical Memoir of East and West Florida With Itineraries [of General Andrew Jackson’s Army, 1818].” The “Memoir,” written in 1818, was published in 1934-1935, in the Florida Historical Quarterly. The map had become separated from the “Memoir,” and previous efforts to locate it were not successful. The map is a fragment of a topographical sketch captioned “Map of the Seat of War …

Captain Hugh Young And His 1818 Topographical Memoir To Andrew Jackson, Ernest F. Dibble
Florida Historical Quarterly
When General Andrew Jackson campaigned through West Florida and took possession of Pensacola in 1818, he was traveling through territory not previously explored and mapped by an American. To traverse this territory with his army, he had to depend upon receiving extensive topographical information. For this he relied upon the surveys provided at the time by Captain Hugh Young, assistant topographical engineer and fellow Tennessean.
Elijah Swift's Travel Journal From Massachusetts To Florida, 1857, Florida Historical Society
Elijah Swift's Travel Journal From Massachusetts To Florida, 1857, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
"From a wretched place...in a wretched car we commenced our wretched ride." Elijah Swift’s remark summarized precisely the way he perceived his journey by rail from New England to Tallahassee-eight days of erratic schedules, lengthy delays, unpredictable hotel accommodations, questionable food, and fatigue. Swift had travelled this same route the year before, and the prospect of making another excursion to Florida could hardly have been attractive. The trip seemed interminable as one was jolted forward in railway car, steamboat, wagon, or stagecoach, and fortunate was the passenger who could doze or enjoy conversation with his companions.
The United States Navy Comes To Pensacola, George F. Pearce
The United States Navy Comes To Pensacola, George F. Pearce
Florida Historical Quarterly
The presence the navy has been a factor in the history of Pensacola almost since the moment that Florida became an American possession in 1821. The action by Congress in 1825 of selecting Pensacola as the location for a navy yard put Secretary of the Navy Samuel L. Southard, and ultimately the commissioners whom he appointed to determine the site for that establishment, in an unenviable position. Acting under pressure from Congress, the secretary ordered the commissioners to Pensacola before a study by the government to ascertain the most suitable location for a navy yard on the Gulf of Mexico …

ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
Wear resistance is an invaluable performance metric for most metallic components found in mechanical systems. Our research focused on AR400, a steel alloy known for its wear resistance capabilities, in an effort to determine what factors might be attributed to its performance in wear applications. After establishing the processing techniques and resulting material structures that give AR400 such an edge in extreme wear conditions, our goal is to determine indicators of wear resistance that can be used to distinguish excellent wear resistant alloys from average or subpar performers against wear.

Wi-Sun Stabilization For Distributed Automation Gateways By Dynamically Controlling Acceptable Children Numbers, Lele Zhang, Iris Dai, Xue Yuan, Tonglin Yuan
Defensive Publications Series
Resilient mesh products (based on, for example, the Wireless Smart Utility Network (Wi-SUN) communication standard) have been available for many years and are widely used within Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distributed Automation (DA) settings. A DA Gateway (which, for convenience, may be referred to herein as a ‘DAGW’) follows the AMI elements’ rules in a Wi-SUN network, but that is not highly efficient while forwarding a significant amount of the third-party traffic. The root cause of such inefficiency is that the child AMI elements are not aware of a change in the available resources in a DAGW. To address …

Communicative Competence And Autoremote Operations, Paraskevi Papaleonida
Communicative Competence And Autoremote Operations, Paraskevi Papaleonida
International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
This paper juxtaposes the communicative needs of the future with the good old concept of communicative competence. Communicative competence, as an STCW requirement for seafarers, is a key notion for Maritime English teaching. New operational functions and concepts are introduced, or existing ones are adapted, for the needs of autonomous and remotely operated (autoremote) vessels. The paper investigates the language requirements within the autoremote operation framework to check if these are covered by the yardstick (STCW) and the standardization tool (SMCP) used in Maritime English. The “remote navigator” needs to reach a good level of “remote situational awareness” through automated …
