Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Safety of navigation is essential for the global economy as maritime trade accounts for more than 80% of international trade. Carrying goods by ship is economically and environmentally efficient, however, a maritime accident can cause harm to the environment and local economies. To ensure safe passage, mariners tend to use already familiar routes as a best practice; most groundings occur when a vessel travels in unfamiliar territories or suddenly changes its route, e.g., due to extreme weather. In highly trafficked areas, the highest risk for ships is that of collision with other vessels in the area. In these situations, a …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill occurred in a region of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) supporting abundant, diverse and valuable communities of fishes and fishers. The economy of the northern GoM is inextricably tied to the natural resource bases of the region (tourism, fishing, oil and gas, etc.) and thus the coupling between the human and ecological systems is tight and subject both feed-back and, to some extent, feed-forward controls. Management actions taken during the 87-day DWH spill incident included the closure of over 280,000 km2 of productive fishing area (about 1/3 of USA federal waters in the …

Information Literacy: Correlation Of Self-Efficacy And Proficiency, Camille M. Wendekier Dec 2021

Information Literacy: Correlation Of Self-Efficacy And Proficiency, Camille M. Wendekier

Dissertations

Information literacy (IL) is a vital component in evidenced-based practice (EBP) due to its role in research utilization. The literature review indicated that undergraduate college students could harbor negative perceptions regarding IL and compartmentalize IL to classroom activities and assignments. These negative perceptions can influence students' IL self-efficacy, which refers to their belief they can successfully complete IL related tasks. Weiner's attributional theory of motivation suggests IL self-efficacy can motivate people to engage in IL related behavior. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, it intended to investigate if a relationship was present between IL self-efficacy and knowledge. Second, …

On Solid Ground: How Sterling Strengthened Airspace Ownership Rights In Florida, Nicolas Torres

University of Miami Business Law Review

No other form of property ownership is as synonymous with Florida as the condominium. While ownership of airspace was possible under common law, modern condominiums are more accurately described as creatures of statute. Although the Florida Condominium Act (FCA) expressly provides for fee simple airspace ownership of condominium property, it had been unclear if the Act could provide for fee simple airspace ownership of non–condominium property. Sterling Breeze v. New Sterling Resorts cleared up that ambiguity and found that the FCA can provide for fee simple ownership of non–condominium airspace. First, this note will review the development of airspace ownership …

Behavior Of High-Plasticity Clay Stabilized With Lime And Rice Husk Ash, Ferry Fatnanta, Soewignjo Agus Nugroho, Andarsin Ongko, Adnan Ruziq Ihsan

Makara Journal of Technology

Soil is an important and fundamental element for building and road construction. However, poor properties of soil can affect the entire construction since the soil will resist the loads transferred from the upper structures. Additives such as cement, lime, and rice husk ash (RHA) can be used as stabilization materials to increase soil strength. This study examined the behavior of stabilized plastic clay mixed with cement, lime, and RHA. The clay stabilization success rate can be measured by the California Bearing Ratio (CBR), unconfined compression strength, and swelling potential. In this study, different mixtures were prepared as samples and tested …

Comparative Study Of Rankine Cycle Power Generation Using Water And Organic Fluids In Saturated And Superheated States, Ghalya Pikra, Henny Sudibyo

Makara Journal of Technology

The Rankine cycle is an electricity generation system that uses water or organic fluids as high-grade or low-grade heat sources, respectively. In this paper, we present the results of our study of Rankine-cycle power generation in which we compared water and organic fluids (toluene and n-nonane) as working fluids in saturated and superheated states. We analyzed the energy and exergy of the Rankine cycle in a saturated vapor state at 300 °C and superheated states at 400 °C and 500 °C (the pressure remained the same as that at 300 °C), and assumed a constant heat input for all states. …

Identification Of Thermophilic Bacteria From Tirta Lebak Buana Hot Spring In Serang, Banten, Indonesia, Kenny Lischer

Makara Journal of Technology

Since Taq polymerase was first explored and identified from thermophilic bacteria, these bacteria have become well-known sources of thermostable enzymes. New thermophilic bacteria have been investigated to broaden biodiversity and translation research. Studies have shown interests in Indonesia because of thermophilic bacteria found in hot springs. This country is traversed by the ring of fire and has more than 70 volcanoes, resulting in the wide distribution of hot springs across the country. Although many reports have been performed, studies have yet to explore thermophilic bacteria in Tirta Lebak Buana hot springs, Java Island, Indonesia. This research was the first to …

Computational Solutions To Exosomal Microrna Biomarker Detection In Pancreatic Cancer, Thuy T. An Dec 2021

Computational Solutions To Exosomal Microrna Biomarker Detection In Pancreatic Cancer, Thuy T. An

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the 5-year survival rate is only 5% to 10%. There are only a few non-specific symptoms associated with the early-stage cancer, therefore most patients are diagnosed in a late stage. Due to the lack of effective treatments and the fact that the early stage has a 39% 5-year survival rate, the biggest hope to control this disease is early detection. Therefore, discovery of effective and reliable non-invasive biomarkers for early detection of pancreatic cancer has been a major topic. Very recently, exosomal microRNAs have become …

The Application Of Mathematical Optimization And Flavor-Detection Technologies For Modeling Aroma Of Hops, Yutong Liu Dec 2021

The Application Of Mathematical Optimization And Flavor-Detection Technologies For Modeling Aroma Of Hops, Yutong Liu

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In recent years, proprietary hops (Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic) become the most sought-after hops among brewers due to their excellent aroma. However, they are restricted to the owners unless other growers purchase the costly licensing agreements. Many public hops are available to the growers without any additional costs, but their aroma is difficult to match to the proprietary hops. Although proprietary and public hop varieties are unique in their aroma profiles, all hops varieties contain similar volatile compounds, merely differ in the quantity of different individual compounds. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the feasibility of matching …

Development And Characterization Of A Decellularized Neuroinhibitory Scaffold Containing Matrix Bound Nanovesicles, Logan Piening Dec 2021

Development And Characterization Of A Decellularized Neuroinhibitory Scaffold Containing Matrix Bound Nanovesicles, Logan Piening

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability but treatments for LBP are limited. Degeneration of the intervertebral disc leads to loss of neuroinhibitory sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs) which allows nerves from dorsal root ganglia (DRG) to grow into the core of the disc, leading to pain. Current treatments for LBP involve drugs that do not target the source of the pain and lack long term efficacy or use invasive surgeries with high complication rates. Treatment with a decellularized tissue scaffold that contains neuroinhibitory components may inhibit nerve growth and prevent disc-associated LBP. Here, a decellularized nucleus pulposus …

Fabrication Of Advanced Materials For Chromatography, Sample Preparation, And Separations, And Accompanying Material Characterization, Dhananjay I. Patel

Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation primarily focuses on the fabrication of materials for solid phase microextraction (SPME) and separation devices. In my first project, I used direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) to prepare sputtered silicon coatings on fused silica fibers. These fibers were then subjected to the chemical vapor deposition of 6-phenyhexylsilane (6-PH) as a stationary phase. Six different types of fibers were made using two different throw distances (4 cm and 20 cm) and three different silicon thicknesses (0.5, 1.8, and 2.8 µm). These coatings were characterized by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), …
