Among the new American residents in the crowd was Cary Nicholas, a thirty-four-year-old transplanted Kentuckian who, like so many others, saw in the territory the prospect for a new start in a life too full of disappointments and failures.

In Florida there are four reservations for Indians— three established by the federal government and one by the state of Florida. The state reservation was established through the efforts of white friends of the Seminoles, a representative from a national organization, several politicians, the federal Indian agent in Florida, and a friendly governor. Ever since the end of the Third Seminole War in 1858, some whites tried to assist the few Indians remaining in the state. The St. Augustine Historical Society began as an informal gathering of a few individuals who met in the downstairs parlor of the Presbyterian manse on the corner of St. George and Hypolita streets. Historians describe the Florida East Coast Railway strike of the 1960s as one of the longest labor disputes in United States history. It was also one of the most violent episodes in recent American labor history. Expected to last only a few weeks, it began in January 1963, when 1,640 workers walked out, and did not end until late 1974. The early years of the strike were punctuated by numerous violent acts, particularly derailments and dynamitings of FEC railway freight trains. On October 20, 1963, four diesel locomotives and fifty-two cars piled up just south of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. …

Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson’s premise that Balzac, a realist fiction author, contributed to the cultural field of gastronomy by his ethnographically accurate depictions of restaurants in mid-nineteenth-century Paris, prompts asking whether this may be true for other fiction authors that painstakingly reflect the foodways of their time and place, such as English author P.G. Wodehouse through his character, the French chef Anatole, in the Jeeves-and-Wooster series. Thematic analysis found three gastronomic themes surrounding Anatole that could be confirmed as historically accurate. This article examines the media coverage of food in the context of community-based end of life rituals and death meals that are increasingly being observed by those undergoing a medically assisted death (medical assistance in dying: MAID). I employ a reconstituted form of media analysis that aims to identify and unpack the socio-cultural themes, values, and assumptions that underpin these food events. These include the central frame of plenty, community/family, personality, comfort, and gender. West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle (EPH) has been the state’s strongest economic region for well over a decade, experiencing sustained growth in population, employment, income and a host of other major economic indicators. The three-county area has recovered nearly all the jobs lost during the COVID-19 recession and has seen its workforce return to pre-pandemic levels. In this report, we present a detailed discussion of the current state of the EPH economy along with our forecast for the likely path of economic activity over the next five years.

Current research into motivation in second language acquisition, including Dörnyei (2005, 2009, 2015), offers compelling evidence that adult language learners who develop and habitually strengthen a vision of their future, linguistically capable selves using concrete, sensory imagery are more likely to sustain the necessary motivation to achieve their personal language-learning goals. My thesis proposes that poetry writing can be an effective medium for language learners to build facility in developing concrete, sensory imagery (tactile, visual, kinesthetic, olfactory, and auditory), including creating a motivating vision of their future, linguistically capable selves. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed that studied four risk factors and four protective factors derived from the literature that impact these families, in order to better understand how nurses can meet the health care needs of the children with asthma and their families. Problem: On-time first cases for operating rooms (OR) is a worldwide focus for improvement. OR delays have many adverse effects, including economic costs and patient and facility staff satisfaction.

Context: The site for this improvement project is a medium-sized hospital in Northern California. There are 12 ORs, with an average of 600-700 cases. Neurosurgery was the chosen specialty due to low on-time starts and long delay minutes. The focus was working with one OR to improve first case on-time starts by 20%.

Problem: Breastfeeding is the most beneficial feeding choice for newborns and one of the best ways for mothers to bond with their newborns. In the current Maternal Child Health (MCH) unit, exclusive breastfeeding rates have fallen lower than the unit’s goal of 82%.

Context: Exclusive breastfeeding, when a newborn consumes only human breastmilk, is not always an easy process to initiate immediately after birth and in the early postpartum period. On this specific unit, there is not enough lactation consultant support to provide all patients on the unit.

Cancer is a complex disease which requires interactions between cell-intrinsic alterations and tumor microenvironment. The connection between epigenetics and genomic structure plays a key role in chromatin interaction which promotes enhancer-promoter interactions for transcriptional activities. Alterations of chromatin states in oncogenic signaling pathway potentially cause cancer cell-intrinsic changes and inappropriate instructions to normal cell cycles, leading to abnormal cell growth. Resulting phenotypic changes are correlated to underlying changes in higher-order chromatin structure such as topologically associating domains (TADs) and compartments. The decline of intraracial dating has been more pronounced among African Americans in comparison to other racial groups. There is lack of available research tailored towards Black men’s dating experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of heterosexual African American males related to their disengagement in romantic relationships with African American females.

This dissertation describes the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of bicyclic fused pyrimidines as single agents with combination chemotherapy potential with both antiangiogenic and cytotoxic effects. The dissertation also discusses one-carbon metabolism inhibitors and tumor targeting proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs).

In cancer chemotherapy, the two major limitations are the dose-limiting toxicities of clinically used agents and the development of resistance to the treatment. Combination chemotherapy with antiangiogenic agents and microtubule targeting agents has shown an advantage against both these drawbacks. Single agents with both antiangiogenic activity and cytotoxicity would afford a therapy that circumvents pharmacokinetic problems of multiple agents, avoid …
