Sensing Methods For Two-Target And Four-Target Detection In Time-Constrained Vector Poisson And Gaussian Channels, Muhammad Fahad

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In this dissertation we consider a sensor scheduling or resource management problem for a vector Poisson and Gaussian channels. The input is a binary random vector and the output is a set of conditionally independent Poisson or Gaussian random variables. The objective is to design a scaling matrix, which is a linear transformation whose purpose is to entangle the different inputs, under a total given energy/time constraint. The two metrics are adopted to quantify the performance of the designed scaling matrix: mutual information and Bayesian inference. In other words, it is an experimental design problem where the objective is to …

Blind Direct Walking Distance Judgment Research: A Best Practices Guide, Crystal Massoglia Jan 2021

Blind Direct Walking Distance Judgment Research: A Best Practices Guide, Crystal Massoglia

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Over the last 30 years, Virtual Reality (VR) research has shown that distance perception in VR is compressed as compared to the real world. The full reason for this is yet unknown. Though many experiments have been run to study the underlying reasons for this compression, often with similar procedures, the experimental details either show significant variation between experiments or go unreported. This makes it difficult to accurately repeat or compare experiments, as well as negatively impacts new researchers trying to learn and follow current best practices. In this paper, we present a review of past research and things that …

The analysis employs Multiple Regression Analysis based on augmented Ordinary Least Squares Regression methods. The results are mixed, as the outcome indicates that, while natural resources are positively related to economic growth, there exists a crowding out effect between natural resources and two sectors of the …

Mathematical Modeling And Numerical Simulation Of Heat Transfer From Isolated Objects, Esmaeil Dehdashti Jan 2021

Mathematical Modeling And Numerical Simulation Of Heat Transfer From Isolated Objects, Esmaeil Dehdashti

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In the area of heat transfer, like other fields of science and engineering, full- and semi-analytical solutions of elementary problems are regarded as invaluable resources that can be used to identify relevant dimensionless parameters, to obtain basic insights into the phenomena under consideration, to quickly quantify the effects of key factors, and, ultimately, to pave the way for understanding more complex problems arising in practice. These solutions can also serve as excellent benchmarks for calibrating experimental setups and validating numerical techniques. In this dissertation, we theoretically study three classical heat transfer problems, with the ultimate goal of deriving analytical or …

Virginia Renews Its Faith In Second Chances, The Honorable Jerrauld C. Jones, Julie E. Mcconnell

Law Faculty Publications

"On January 1, 1995, in the early morning hours, 17-year-old A.M. committed a crime in Virginia that would change his life forever. Tragically, he and two co-defendants took a man’s life. He will live the rest of his life regretting that day and working to become a better person. Something else significant happened on January 1, 1995˗˗Virginia’s legislation to abolish discretionary parole went into effect. (See Va. Code §53.1-165.1) If he had committed the crime one day earlier, A.M. would have been eligible for parole years ago. Under the new law, however, any person sentenced to a term of incarceration …

A "Directed Trust" Approach To Intergenerational Solidarity In American Environmental Law And Policy: A Modest Proposal, Lucia A. Silecchia Jan 2021

A "Directed Trust" Approach To Intergenerational Solidarity In American Environmental Law And Policy: A Modest Proposal, Lucia A. Silecchia

Scholarly Articles

In recent years, much has been written about trust principles as a useful lens through which to view environmental obligations – particularly with respect to the obligations of the present generation to those who will live in the generations to come.
Underlying much of this discussion is the ancient principle of the public trust doctrine as a vehicle for meeting that intergenerational responsibility. However, while trust theory enjoys an impressive legal pedigree, it has not gained as much traction in American environmental law as might be effective for addressing contemporary environmental issues.
One reason that the trust model is not …
