Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) In Preschool-Aged Children: A Critical Review, Will Anastasiadis
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) In Preschool-Aged Children: A Critical Review, Will Anastasiadis
Bakerman Student Research Awards
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by core symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). ADHD is a fairly common psychopathology diagnosed in childhood (Kooij et al., 2010; Perou et al., 2013). For instance, a recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that approximately 6.1 million (9.4%) U.S. children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 17 have received an ADHD diagnosis; these prevalence estimates were acquired from a collection of 2016 parent-reported ADHD diagnoses (Danielson et al., 2018). Of those patients diagnosed with ADHD, a weighted estimate …
Viral Suppression Of Ripk1-Mediated Signaling, Darshika J. Udawatte, Alan L. Rothman
Viral Suppression Of Ripk1-Mediated Signaling, Darshika J. Udawatte, Alan L. Rothman
Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) has emerged as a key upstream regulator of cell death and inflammation. RIPK1-mediated signaling governs the outcome of signaling pathways initiated by tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1), Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), TLR4, retinoic acid-inducible gene 1 (RIG-I)/melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA-5), and Z-binding protein 1 (ZBP1) by signaling for NF-k B activation, mitogen-associated protein kinase (MAPK) and interferon regulatory factor 3/7 (IRF3/7) phosphorylation, and cell death via apoptosis and necroptosis. Both cell death and inflammatory responses play a major role in controlling virus infections. Therefore, viruses have evolved multifaceted mechanisms to exploit host immune …

Despite differences between the cover crop growth and decomposition phases, few greenhouse gas (GHG) studies have separated these phases from each other. This study’s hypothesis was that a living cover crop reduces soil inorganic N concentrations and soil water, thereby reducing N2O emissions. We quantified the effects of a fall-planted living cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop (2017, 2018, 2019) on the following spring’s soil temperature, soil water, water-filled porosity (WFP), inorganic N, and GHG (N2O-N and CO2–C) emissions and compared these measurements to bare soil. The experimental design was a randomized …

Hair Toxicology Testing Among Children Evaluated For Physical Abuse: Evaluation Of A Practice Change., Ashley Dejarnette
Hair Toxicology Testing Among Children Evaluated For Physical Abuse: Evaluation Of A Practice Change., Ashley Dejarnette
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Despite a complete medical evaluation for child physical abuse, many suspected victims have indeterminant findings. The lack of a definitive diagnosis can impede child protection agencies’ ability to protect those children at high risk for abuse, leaving them vulnerable to subsequent injuries and potentially escalating violence by caregivers. Oftentimes, allegations of child physical abuse are accompanied by concerns for substance abuse by the caregiver as well. While we know that children living in homes where caregivers use illicit substances are at substantially higher risk for physical abuse, drug testing children for environmental exposure to illicit substances is not yet …
Automated Parsing Of Flexible Molecular Systems Using Principal Component Analysis And K-Means Clustering Techniques, Matthew J. Nwerem
Automated Parsing Of Flexible Molecular Systems Using Principal Component Analysis And K-Means Clustering Techniques, Matthew J. Nwerem
Computational and Data Sciences (MS) Theses
Computational investigation of molecular structures and reactions of biological and pharmaceutical interests remains a grand scientific challenge due to the size and conformational flexibility of these systems. The work requires parsing and analyzing thousands of conformations in each molecular state for meaningful chemical information and subjecting the ensemble to costly quantum chemical calculations. The current status quo typically involves a manual process where the investigator must look at each conformation, separating each into structural families. This process is time-intensive and tedious, making this process infeasible in some cases, and limiting the ability of theoreticians to study these systems. However, the …
Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo
Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo
Dissertations
Due to the difficulty and expense of collecting bathymetric data, modeling is the primary tool to produce detailed maps of the ocean floor. Current modeling practices typically utilize only one interpolator; the industry standard is splines-in-tension.
In this dissertation we introduce a new nominal-informed ensemble interpolator designed to improve modeling accuracy in regions of sparse data. The method is guided by a priori domain knowledge provided by artificially intelligent classifiers. We recast such geomorphological classifications, such as ‘seamount’ or ‘ridge’, as nominal data which we utilize as foundational shapes in an expanded ordinary least squares regression-based algorithm. To our knowledge …
Doping Of Conjugated Polymers: Preparation, Characterization And Device Fabrication, Kan Tang
Doping Of Conjugated Polymers: Preparation, Characterization And Device Fabrication, Kan Tang
Dissertations
Semiconducting conjugated polymers (CPs) as emerging materials for advanced electronic applications such as sensors, OPVs, and OEFTs has become an intriguing research topic in the past decades. It opens a new avenue of “flexible” electronics, which has shown great potential in next-generation electronic devices.
However, due to the nature of CP materials and related solution processing techniques, unlike almost perfectly crystalline silicon materials, CPs in the solid-state often exhibit much lower crystallinity if it is not complete amorphous, which severely hinder the electronic property and optical property of the materials. The crystallinity of CPs in a film is often uniquely …
Identification Of Cultural Differences And Their Effects On International Relations: A Novel Approach, Stephen W. Jones
Identification Of Cultural Differences And Their Effects On International Relations: A Novel Approach, Stephen W. Jones
Dissertations
International Relations suffers from underspecified treatments of culture that risk reifying, essentializing, or ignoring the effects of cultural differences in the conduct of relationships between states. Following a review of the development of the culture concept, this interpretivist, epistemologically critical realist, dissertation introduces intercultural adaptive frameshifting from the intercultural communication literature. To assess whether culture has effect within an epistemic community, four frameworks are evaluated within a non-IR field (global Christian reasoning). Speech act theory is used to assess meaningful affect through illocutionary and/or perlocutionary divergence based on cultural difference.
Following the findings that such cultural differences do in fact …
Interleukin-17a Facilitates Chikungunya Virus Infection By Inhibiting Ifn-Α2 Expression, Biswas Neupane
Interleukin-17a Facilitates Chikungunya Virus Infection By Inhibiting Ifn-Α2 Expression, Biswas Neupane
Dissertations
Interferons (IFNs) are the key components of innate immunity and are crucial for host defense against viral infections. Here, we report a novel role of interleukin-17A (IL-17A) in inhibiting IFN-α2 expression, thus promoting chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection. CHIKV infected IL-17A deficient (Il17a-/-) mice expressed a higher level of IFN-α2 and developed diminished viremia and milder footpad swelling in comparison to wild-type (WT) control mice, this was also recapitulated in IL-17A receptor-deficient (Il17ra-/-) mice. Interestingly, IL-17A selectively blocked IFN-α2 production during CHIKV, but not West Nile virus (WNV) or Zika virus (ZIKV), infections. Recombinant IL-17A …
The Role Of The Msaabcr Operon In Cell Wall Integrity And Programmed Cell Death During Biofilm Development, Bibek G C
Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen in both community and health care settings. Biggest challenges with S. aureus as a pathogen is its ability to acquire antibiotic resistance and produce robust biofilms. In this work, we investigated the nature of the cell wall defect in the msaABCR operon mutant in the Mu50 (VISA) and USA300 LAC methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Results showed that msaABCR-mutant cells had decreased cell wall thickness and cell wall crosslinking in both strains. These defects are most likely due to increased murein hydrolase activity and/or nonspecific processing of murein hydrolases mediated by increased …
Gender And Cross-Cultural Invariance Of Attitudes Toward Statistics Among Non-Stem Undergraduate Students, Mihili Edirisooriya
Gender And Cross-Cultural Invariance Of Attitudes Toward Statistics Among Non-Stem Undergraduate Students, Mihili Edirisooriya
Dissertations
Because of the wide usage of statistics in almost every field, many universities have incorporated statistics into their undergraduate and graduate curricula. Students taking statistics have often reported negative experiences and an aversion to statistics. Non-STEM students have often reported negative attitudes toward statistics (Chew & Dillon, 2014; Keeley et al., 2008). Researchers have used qualitative and quantitative approaches to measure attitudes toward statistics. The Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics-36 (SATS-36) scale has been the most widely accepted measure to investigate attitudes toward statistics. Any psychometrically sound measurement instrument requires invariance across groups in its usage. Otherwise, measurement biases could …
An Evaluation Of The Central Coast Rangeland Coalition: Trust And Other Factors Important For Collaborative Conservation, Dustin Tran
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
The proliferation of collaborative partnerships across the western United States and the lack of tools and protocols to evaluate them have been well documented. As the number and types (conservation-based, policy actions, information sharing) of collaboratives rises, there is a need for research that aims to evaluate these partnerships' performance and collaborative process considering their importance and potential to solve complex ecological, economic, and social problems. This study aims to contribute to this pool of research by interviewing the Steering Committee (SC) members of the Central Coast Rangeland Coalition (CCRC), a volunteer-based and information-sharing rangeland collaborative coalition. We evaluate and …

Why Targeted Testing Matters: Evaluation Of A Practice Change In Pediatric Ingestion Screening., Emily Neal
Why Targeted Testing Matters: Evaluation Of A Practice Change In Pediatric Ingestion Screening., Emily Neal
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: The drug epidemic is plaguing the United States and more Americans than ever have been identified to use illicit substances regularly, including while caring for children. The practice of obtaining a standard urine or serum drug screen is outdated and ineffective in determining if children have been exposed to illicit substances. Often these immunoassay drug screens are negative despite pediatric patients having symptomatic responses to illicit drug exposures. Immunoassay drug screens are not designed for testing in children who are often passively and directly exposed as bystanders to adult drug use in their environment. This means that a “negative” …
