Advances In The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Krabbe Disease, David A Wenger, Paola Luzi, Mohammad Rafi Aug 2021

Advances In The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Krabbe Disease, David A Wenger, Paola Luzi, Mohammad Rafi

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Krabbe disease is an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy caused by pathogenic variants in the galactocerebrosidase (GALC) gene. GALC activity is needed for the lysosomal hydrolysis of galactosylceramide, an important component of myelin. While most patients are infants, older patients are also diagnosed. Starting in 1970, a diagnosis could be made by measuring GALC activity in leukocytes and cultured cells. After the purification of GALC in 1993, the cDNA and genes were cloned. Over 260 disease-causing variants as well as activity lowering benign variants have been identified. While some pathogenic variants can be considered “severe,” others can be considered “mild.” The combination …

Gross Hematuria: An Unusual Presenting Symptom Of Systemic Wild-Type Transthyretinamyloidosis., Sage A. Vincent, Daniel Christensen, Perry R. Weiner

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

Amyloidosis of the urinary bladder is a rare cause of gross hematuria. In patients with systemic amyloidosis, identification is nearly always related to cardiac complaints; urologic presenting symptoms are extremely uncommon. We present a 77-year-old male patient with painless gross hematuria ultimately found to be secondary to systemic wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis. He underwent transurethral resection of the bladder lesion and was initiated on transthyretin stabilizing medication. In the 6 months since starting treatment, the patient has had no further episodes of gross hematuria, but will require cystoscopic surveillance for evidence of recurrence or concomittment urothelial carcinoma.

Indicators Of Senescence And Their Relationship With The Antioxidant Response Element In Ovarian Cancer Cells—Toward A More Encompassing View Of Enzyme Activity Levels In Cells, Shaniqua Analycia Hayes Aug 2021

Indicators Of Senescence And Their Relationship With The Antioxidant Response Element In Ovarian Cancer Cells—Toward A More Encompassing View Of Enzyme Activity Levels In Cells, Shaniqua Analycia Hayes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Enzymes and other related proteins are promising targets as biomarkers for cancer diagnostics, and it is therefore important to be able to quantify intracellular enzyme activity levels, not just presence of enzyme. Thus, there is a great need for the development of methods that offer spatiotemporal quantification of intracellular enzyme activity levels in respiring 2- and 3-dimensional cultures or their sample-processed variants. Previous studies have demonstrated that ß-gal is upregulated in senescence and in select ovarian cancers, and its expression/activity is upregulated when cells are under oxidative stress conditions. To that end, the primary goal of this work was to …

Social Constructivism In Chemistry Peer Leaders And Organic Chemistry Students, Aaron M. Clark Aug 2021

Social Constructivism In Chemistry Peer Leaders And Organic Chemistry Students, Aaron M. Clark

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social constructivist learning is a goal in many STEM programs. The goal of this dissertation is to shed light on what that pedagogy looks like in the context of organic chemistry courses and by peer leaders whose job is to implement this pedagogy with general chemistry and organic chemistry students. Learning is complex; the social constructivist ideas presented in this dissertation, however, are a straightforward means for promoting learning. Qualitative and quantitative methods used to explore social constructivist learning are outlined.

Three investigations were conducted: First, approaches to learning by students completing the first semester of a yearlong organic chemistry …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Soil erosion represents a critical socio-economic and environmental hazard for Mexico and the world. Given that soil erosion is a phenomenon influenced by human activities, it is essential to know the level of cultural perspectives on this matter. An instrument with eight scales was applied to 275 university students from a northwestern Mexican city, which measured the knowledge about soil erosion, self-efficacy in solving the problem, future perspectives, perceived consequences, obstacles to addressing soil erosion, and mitigation intentions and behaviors. To analyze the relationship between the scales and the intentions and behaviors of soil erosion mitigation, a model of structural …

Frailty Index In The Colonias On The Us-Mexico Border: A Special Report, Eron G. Manusov, Carolina Gomez De Ziegler, Vincent P. Diego, Gerardo Munoz-Monaco, Sarah Williams-Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

Frailty is the age-related decline in well-being. The Frailty index (FI) measures the accumulation of health deficits and reflects biopsychosocial and cultural determinants of well-being. Frailty is measured as a static phenotype or as a Frailty Index comprising a ratio of suffered health deficits and total deficits. We report a Frailty Index calculated from routinely measured clinical variables gathered from residents of two Colonias (neighborhoods) in South Texas. A Colonia is a predominantly Hispanic, economically distressed, unincorporated neighborhood. We analyzed retrospective data from 894 patients that live in two Colonias located on the Texas-Mexico border. We calculated the FI with …

Proposed Teacher Competencies To Support Effective Nature Of Science Instruction: A Meta-Synthesis Of The Literature, Noushin Nouri, Maryam Saberi, William F. Mccomas, Mehdi Mohammadi

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Enhancing students’ understanding of aspects of the nature of science (NOS) recommended by the science education community is an important goal of science instruction. This can occur only when teachers are adequately prepared for teaching NOS. However, the science education community is still considering what is needed to enhance the efficiency of NOS instruction with respect to the preparation of NOS teachers. Based on a qualitative meta-synthesis of recent literature (2009–2018), we propose a framework of competencies for what teachers need to know to be an effective NOS instructor. Fifty-eight peer-reviewed journal articles targeting NOS instruction for, and related classroom …

Exploring The Ecology Of Establishing Oak Trees In Urban Settings Of The Northeast, Tierney Bocsi, Rick W. Harper, Paige S. Warren, Stephen Destefano Aug 2021

Exploring The Ecology Of Establishing Oak Trees In Urban Settings Of The Northeast, Tierney Bocsi, Rick W. Harper, Paige S. Warren, Stephen Destefano

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban forests notoriously lack diversity in the biological communities that inhabit them, from the age and species composition of street trees to wildlife populations. In reaction to invasions of nonnative insects and diseases as well as predicted response to climate change, an emerging number of community foresters and tree wardens are expanding their urban tree planting practices to include a broader assemblage of tree species. These include oaks, among other species able to tolerate and adapt to urban conditions. Oaks are potentially favorable in regions like the northeastern U.S., where they grow extensively in rural forests and demonstrate potential resistance …

Does Family Communication Orientation Relate To How We Use Time? A Preliminary Study On Family Communication Patterns And People’S Perspective On Time, C. Leigh Nelson, Eric M. Fife Aug 2021

Does Family Communication Orientation Relate To How We Use Time? A Preliminary Study On Family Communication Patterns And People’S Perspective On Time, C. Leigh Nelson, Eric M. Fife

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

A web survey study of 853 respondents examined whether family communication patterns predicted people’s orientation to time. Conversation orientation was negatively and significantly related with a past negative perspective on time and was positively and significantly related to past positive, present hedonistic, and future orientation perspectives on time. Conformity orientation was positively and significantly related to past negative, present hedonistic, and present fatalistic perspectives on time but was negatively and significantly related to a past positive perspective on time. Multiple linear regression results indicated that both conversation orientation and conformity orientation were significant predictors of various time orientations.

Learning Progressions As Models And Tools For Supporting Classroom Assessment, Alicia C. Alonzo Aug 2021

Learning Progressions As Models And Tools For Supporting Classroom Assessment, Alicia C. Alonzo

2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences

Like all models, learning progressions (LPs) provide simplified representations of complex phenomena. One key simplification is the characterisation of student thinking in terms of levels. This characterisation is both essential for large-scale applications, such as informing standards, but potentially problematic for smaller-scale applications. In this paper, I describe a program of research designed to explore the smaller-scale use of LPs as supports for teacher classroom assessment practices in light of this simplification. Based on this research, I conclude that LP levels may serve as a generative heuristic, particularly when teachers are engaged with evidence of the limitations of LP levels …

Cats And Wildlife: An Animal Welfare Perspective., John Hadidian Aug 2021

Cats And Wildlife: An Animal Welfare Perspective., John Hadidian

Management - General

While there is no question that outdoors cats have an impact on wildlife, the extent and significance of this impact is the subject of considerable debate. The controversy surrounding outdoor cats can be traced back at least a century, with contemporary claims of threats to global biodiversity bringing animal welfare and conservation interests directly into opposition, largely over the means of managing conflicts. The irony in this is that cat defenders and cat detractors generally agree that it is in the best interests of cats that they should be shielded from the vagaries of outdoor life. While there are practical …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Background Recent evaluation of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) mortality demonstrates disproportionate disease burden within the United States. However, there are few contemporary data on US children living with acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and RHD. Methods and Results Twenty-two US pediatric institutions participated in a 10-year review (2008-2018) of electronic medical records and echocardiographic databases of children 4 to 17 years diagnosed with ARF/RHD to determine demographics, diagnosis, and management. Geocoding was used to determine a census tract-based socioeconomic deprivation index. Descriptive statistics of patient characteristics and regression analysis of RHD classification, disease severity, and initial antibiotic prescription according to community …

Intracortical Microelectrode Array Unit Yield Under Chronic Conditions: A Comparative Evaluation, Jeffrey R. Capadona Aug 2021

Intracortical Microelectrode Array Unit Yield Under Chronic Conditions: A Comparative Evaluation, Jeffrey R. Capadona

Faculty Scholarship

While microelectrode arrays (MEAs) offer the promise of elucidating functional neural circuitry and serve as the basis for a cortical neuroprosthesis, the challenge of designing and demon-strating chronically reliable technology remains. Numerous studies report “chronic” data but the actual time spans and performance measures corresponding to the experimental work vary. In this study, we reviewed the experimental durations that constitute chronic studies across a range of MEA types and animal species to gain an understanding of the widespread variability in reported study duration. For rodents, which are the most commonly used animal model in chronic studies, we examined active electrode …

The Politics Of Penguin Pleasure: Why Animal Sexualities Matter To Humans, Nicole Emanuel Aug 2021

The Politics Of Penguin Pleasure: Why Animal Sexualities Matter To Humans, Nicole Emanuel

English

This thesis is about what it means to think with penguins. It explores the ways in which we form ideas about these animals, and how those ideas can impact our beliefs about our own lives, penguins' lives, and the kinds of relationships that exist among humans and non-humans. It includes a survey of penguin representations across media and culture, particularly focusing on children's television and movies, nature documentaries, and non-fiction accounts of polar travel. While these penguin-centric texts can vary strikingly in tone, the penguins themselves appear again and again in an appealing light. Across a wide range of time …

A Sled Dog Model For Positive Health Effects Of Weight Management And Exercise, Laura Kay Falkenstein Aug 2021

A Sled Dog Model For Positive Health Effects Of Weight Management And Exercise, Laura Kay Falkenstein

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Hypertrophic white adipose tissue found in obesity leads to chronic inflammation and reduced insulin sensitivity, bringing rise to a myriad of diseases and is a significant risk factor for premature death. Obesity can be combatted with physical activity, dietary restrictions, or a combination of the two. However, exercise training regardless of changes in body weight has been shown to improve metabolic health. Expanding on a previous study of changes in metabolic biomarkers upon weight gain and after a period of athletic conditioning, in this project we used a sled dog model to examine biomarker shifts over a course of sedentary …

Neuroendocrine And Glial Cell Remodeling In A Hibernating Mammal, Cassandra Duncan Aug 2021

Neuroendocrine And Glial Cell Remodeling In A Hibernating Mammal, Cassandra Duncan

Biological Sciences

In most seasonally breeding vertebrates, changes in photoperiod trigger the remodeling of neuroendocrine and glial cells known to be involved in activation of the reproductive axis. We used electron microscopy to determine whether similar remodeling occurs under conditions of continuous darkness during hibernation in arctic ground squirrels (Urocitellus parryii). Immediately prior to the reproductive season, arctic ground squirrels naturally sequester themselves in a persistently dark hibernacula for 6-8 months where they experience only muted fluctuations in ambient temperature. Hibernation consists of two to three week-long bouts of torpor, during which body temperature and metabolism are depressed, periodically interrupted by short …

The Catalyst For Contemporary Jihad: The Religious Leaders And Their Strategies, Ronnie Dewitt Aug 2021

The Catalyst For Contemporary Jihad: The Religious Leaders And Their Strategies, Ronnie Dewitt

Interdisciplinary Studies

This dissertation provides insight in the methodologies utilized by leaders of jihadist terrorist organizations who create a dedicated following in their pursuit of establishing a global caliphate. The research in this project illustrates a linkage from these charismatic leaders to the sacred edicts of the Koran, the Hadith, the Sunna, Sharia (Islamic jurisprudence), and the prophet Muhammad. Moreover, it bears out a unique perspective in academic national security studies which delves deeper than similar published works regarding subject matter focused on both violent and stealth jihad (also known as the non-violent usurpation of non-Islamic cultures). These subjects are discussed in …

Bacteriophages densely pack their long double-stranded DNA genome inside a protein capsid. The conformation of the viral genome inside the capsid is consistent with a hexagonal liquid crystalline structure. Experiments have confirmed that the details of the hexagonal packing depend on the electrochemistry of the capsid and its environment. In this work, we propose a biophysical model that quantifies the relationship between DNA configurations inside bacteriophage capsids and the types and concentrations of ions present in a biological system. We introduce an expression for the free energy that combines the electrostatic energy with contributions from bending of individual segments of …

Drought-Tolerant Mechanisms Of Solanum Habrochaites, Dane Anthony Hudson Aug 2021

Drought-Tolerant Mechanisms Of Solanum Habrochaites, Dane Anthony Hudson

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the complex mechanisms of drought tolerance in wild relatives of important crop plants offers a promising strategy for developing more stress resistant commercial cultivars. However, progress is limited by our understanding of the complex pathways involved in drought-tolerant phenotypes. This dissertation investigates and compares the biochemical and physiological effects of water deficit in a drought-tolerant wild tomato species (Solanum habrochaites) and a drought-sensitive commercial cultivar (Solanum lycopersicum cv. M82). M82 shows marked wilting reflected in low relative water content and water potential of the leaves, whereas S. habrochaites retains turgor, leaf water content, and high water potential levels. S. …
