The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
A conventional “Magallanes” Pummelo orchard in Brgy. Minda, Carmen, Davao del Norte, Philippines was selected to assess thrips species composition, population density, and associated natural enemies. The insecticide treated pummelo orchard was situated adjacent to vast Cavendish banana plantations. Thrips were collected weekly from September 2017 to July 2018 from five different randomly selected flowering pummelo trees by destructive sampling and yellow sticky trap methods. Thrips were sorted and examined under the microscope. Findings of the study showed that Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan), (Thripidae: Thripinae) was the only species of thrips infesting “Magallanes” pummelo. This constitutes the first report in this …

Epiphyte Identification On Commercially Grown Kappaphycus Alvarezii In Eastern Samar, Philippines [Research Note], Ma. Carla Angelica Deladia, Leni Yap-Dejeto, Kenneth Abuda, Margarita Dela Cruz
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
The decline in production and quality of Kappaphycus alvarezii is primarily associated with occurrence of "ice-ice" disease and epiphyte infestations. K. alvarezii var. tambalang (brown) in the nursery farms of Balangiga and Lawaan, E. Samar harbored such infestations. This study identified the dominant Epiphytic Filamentous Algae (EFA) on the seaweeds in these farms using microscopic morphological characteristics. Microscopic examinations revealed that the main epiphyte in the farms studied was Melanothamnus apiculatus (Hollenberg) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs (former: Neosiphonia apiculata (Hollenberg) Masuda et Kogame). The epiphytes observed have rhizoids separated from the pericentral cells, unicellular trichoblasts, globose cystocarp and tetrasporangia arranged in …

Efficacy Study Of Selected Maize (Zea Mays L.) Genotypes Against The Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia Furnacalis (Guenée), Yoryncita Marfori, Merdelyn Caasi-Lit, Tonette Laude
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Laboratory and screen house studies were conducted to assess the efficacy of selected twenty-six maize varieties against Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée). Hierarchical tree based on resistance parameters clearly revealed that the twenty-six maize varieties are best classified into three groups, viz. resistant, intermediate, and susceptible. In laboratory test, the varieties RCS2, RCS4, RCS5, 'IPB Var13', Bt2, Bt3, and Bt4 were consistently identified as highly resistant. Further examinations in stalk feeding assay showed that the resistant varieties had sharp decline in larval survival (LS) on the 2nd to the 5th day of larval feeding in …

Optimization Of Ethanol Production From Enzymatically Saccharified Biomass Of Acid-Pretreated Rice Straw, Muzammal Mateen Azhar, Qurban Ali, Arif Malik, Elham Khalili, Muhammad Arshad Javed, Shinawar Waseem Ali, Muhammad Saleem Haidar
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
The substrate of rice (Oryza sativa) straw employed in this study was procured from local market and stored in polyethene bags until needed. The study was conducted to find out the effects of process optimization of ethanol production from enzymatically saccharified biomass of acid-pretreated rice straw. The results indicated that acid pretreatment has reduced lignin content about 50%. Resultantly, pretreatment raised cellulose contents up to 52% making it suitable for enzymatic saccharification. Optimization of saccharification illustrated that parameters such as biomass, enzyme concentration, temperature, incubation time and agitation indeed affected the action of cellulase on pretreated biomass releasing …

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Hypertension is a leading cause of disease burden in developing countries. Leading factors are obesity, increased cholesterol levels, and long-term oxidative stress. Since commercially available drugs for cardiovascular diseases such as antioxidants and ACE receptor blockers are expensive, preventive cheaper alternatives derived from foods are sought after. Lakatan, one of the most abundant and cheap food sources in the Philippines has been proven to have antioxidant and antihypertensive properties but studies exploring the proteins and bioactive peptides responsible for its health benefits are very limited. In this study, proteins from Lakatan (Musa acuminata Colla) have been studied to understand …

Wind drift is a very critical issue in pesticide applications. In recent experiments, the application of pesticides is focus on precision farming. In this study, a spraying system that could manipulate trajectories of droplets to decrease drift was tested in a wind tunnel. Three nozzles (XR11002, AIXR11002 and TTJ6011002) were used at three operating pressures (200 kPa, 300 kPa, 400 kPa), with four orientation angles of nozzles against wind direction (0°, 5°, 10°, 15°), and three wind velocities (1.5, 2, and 2.5 m s-1) with three repetitions. A statistical factorial CRD was used with Tukey Post Hoc Test …
An Evaluation Of The Hargreaves-Samani Method For Estimating Evapotranspiration Under Semi-Arid Conditions, Yusuf Aydin
An Evaluation Of The Hargreaves-Samani Method For Estimating Evapotranspiration Under Semi-Arid Conditions, Yusuf Aydin
The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
It is suggested by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to use the FAO56-Penman-Monteith (FAO56-PM) model as the standard model in reference crop water consumption studies. However, the climate parameters required by the standard model cannot be fully and reliably obtained in under developed or developing countries. Hence, the Hargreaves-Samani (HS) equation is used as an alternative to the FAO56-PM model since it can be used for calculations with less climate data. In this study, ETo-PM and ETo-HS values calculated at 8 provinces in Southeastern Turkey using the IAM-ETo software were evaluated and …

Humans are changing the Earth's surface at an accelerating pace, with significant consequences for ecosystems and their biodiversity. Landscape transformation has far-reaching implications including reduced net primary production (NPP) available to support ecosystems, reduced energy supplies to consumers, and disruption of ecosystem services such as carbon storage. Anthropogenic activities have reduced global NPP available to terrestrial ecosystems by nearly 25%, but the loss of NPP from wetland ecosystems is unknown. We used a simple approach to estimate aquatic NPP from measured habitat areas and habitat-specific areal productivity in the largest wetland complex on the USA west coast, comparing historical and …
Assesment Of Antibiotic Resistant Gene Expression In Clinical Isolates Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Dustin Esmond
Assesment Of Antibiotic Resistant Gene Expression In Clinical Isolates Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Dustin Esmond
Biology Theses
Increasing prevalence of nosocomial infections by antimicrobial resistant pathogens resulting in higher mortality rates and financial burden is of great concern. Pseudomonas aeruginosa represents one of six highly virulent “ESKAPE” pathogens that exhibit considerable intrinsic drug resistance as well as mechanisms for acquiring further resistance. As many of these mechanisms are regulated through gene expression, we sought to identify regulatory strategies and patterns at play in 23 clinical isolates collected from Baku, Azerbaijan and Tyler, Texas, USA. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed on six gene targets implicated in resistance and contrasted with antibiotic phenotypes. We found AmpC cephalosporinase …

Neurodegenerative disease (ND) is a growing health burden worldwide, but its causes and treatments remain elusive. Although most cases of ND are sporadic, rare familial cases have been attributed to single genes, which can be investigated in animal models. We have generated a new mutation in the calcium-independent phospholipase A2 (iPLA2) VIA gene CG6718, the Drosophila melanogaster ortholog of human PLA2G6/PARK14, mutations in which cause a suite of NDs collectively called PLA2G6-associated neurodegeneration (PLAN). Our mutants display age-related loss of climbing ability, a symptom of neurodegeneration in flies. Although phospholipase activity commonly is presumed to underlie iPLA2VIA function, locomotor decline …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Treponema pallidum ssp. pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis, can now be cultured continuously in vitro utilizing a tissue culture system, and the multiplication rates are similar to those obtained in experimental infection of rabbits. In this study, the RNA transcript profiles of the T. pallidum Nichols during in vitro culture and rabbit infection were compared to examine whether gene expression patterns differed in these two environments. To this end, RNA preparations were converted to cDNA and subjected to RNA-seq using high throughput Illumina sequencing; reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR was also performed on selected genes for validation of results. The …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
It is well established that memory CD8 T cells protect susceptible strains of mice from mousepox, a lethal viral disease caused by ectromelia virus (ECTV), the murine counterpart to human variola virus. While mRNA vaccines induce protective antibody (Ab) responses, it is unknown whether they also induce protective memory CD8 T cells. We now show that immunization with different doses of unmodified or N(1)-methylpseudouridine-modified mRNA (modified mRNA) in lipid nanoparticles (LNP) encoding the ECTV gene EVM158 induced similarly strong CD8 T cell responses to the epitope TSYKFESV, albeit unmodified mRNA-LNP had adverse effects at the inoculation site. A single immunization …

A Randomized Controlled Trial Of Psychological Outcomes Of Mobile Guided Resonant Frequency Breathing In Young Adults With Elevated Stress During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Al Amira Safa Shehab
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Deep breathing practices have shown promise in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression in different populations, including young adults. Specifically, resonant frequency breathing can exert an impact on stress response systems through the vagus nerve and the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This may induce reductions in stress and improvement in emotion regulation. Young adults, including college students, tend to be at a higher risk for psychological distress, as they face several psychosocial challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed new and unique stressors that resulted in higher levels of stress and emotional symptoms and it has been shown that this may have placed …
Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics And Network Analysis Of The Gramicidin Water Channel And Proton Transfer Pathways To Qb In Photosynthetic Reaction Centers, Yingying Zhang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Water molecules play a key role in all biochemical processes. They help define the shape of proteins, and they are reactant or product in many reactions and are released as ligands are bound. They facilitate transfer of protons through transmembrane proton channel, pump and transporter proteins. Continuum electrostatics (CE) force fields such as used in MCCE (Multi-Conformation Continuum Electrostatics) capture electrostatic interactions in biomolecules with an implicit solvent, to give the averaged solvent water equilibrium properties. Hybrid CE methods can use explicit water molecules within the protein surrounded by implicit solvent. These hybrid methods permit the study of explicit hydrogen …
Oxydifficidin-Producing Bacillus Presents Novel Antimicrobial Activity Against Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Involving The Deda Protein, Jingbo Kan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Bacterial human pathogens cause severe infectious diseases which are the second most common cause of death next to cancer and cardiovascular diseases in the world, especially in developing countries. Gonorrhea particularly, is the second most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) which is caused by the microorganism Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 1.6 million new gonorrhea cases emerged in USA in 2018 (“Detailed STD Facts - Gonorrhea” n.d.). Also, the WHO (World Health Organization) shows that gonorrhea is the most antibiotic resistant STI (“PAHO/WHO | Gonorrhea” n.d.), highlighting the shortage of efficient …
Solving Multiple Inference In Graphical Models, Cong Chen
Solving Multiple Inference In Graphical Models, Cong Chen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For inference problems in graphical models, much effort has been directed at algorithms for obtaining one single optimal prediction. In practice, the data is often noisy or incomplete, which makes one single optimal solution unreliable. To address this problem, multiple Inference is proposed to find several best solutions, M-Best, where multiple hypotheses are preferred for advanced reasoning. People use oracle accuracy as an evaluation criterion expecting one of the solutions has high accuracy with the ground truth. It has been shown that it is beneficial for the top solutions to be diverse. Approaches for solving diverse multiple inference are proposed …

Climate Change And The Ancestors: Rain, Gender And Politics In An African Water Catchment, Jessie Fredlund
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Uluguru, a small mountain range in eastern Tanzania and one of the rainiest places in East Africa, serves as the principal water catchment for Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, and for commercial farms along the country’s central coast. Home to smallholder farmers who cultivate a variety of crops on mostly rain-fed farms, the catchment has been a site of struggle over water and nature since the nineteenth century. Today, climate change has rendered rainfall increasingly unpredictable, and a wave of “sustainable development” interventions has pressured farmers to change their practices and to engage in unpaid forms of ecological labor …
A Difference In Rhythm: John Burroughs As Rhythmanalyst, Jennifer Macdonald
A Difference In Rhythm: John Burroughs As Rhythmanalyst, Jennifer Macdonald
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Nature writer John Burroughs wrote about the rhythms of life in nature, people, and places, sharing his experiences of his surroundings for readers to learn from, get inspired by, or escape through. In this literature review, using Henri Lefebvre’s Rhythmanalysis, in which rhythm is the “interaction between a place, a time, and an expenditure of energy” (Lefebvre, 2004, p. 15), I explore some of Burroughs’ writing, asserting that Burroughs himself was a rhythmanalyst. Burroughs is typically read as a literary naturalist who hoped to relay any scene as it truly was (to perfect the “art of seeing things” or …
