Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry approach was used to investigate the anisotropic dielectric constants of corundum α-(AlxGa1-x)2O3 thin films in their below bandgap spectral regions. The sample set was epitaxially grown using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on m-plane sapphire. The spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were performed at multiple azimuthal angles to resolve the uniaxial dielectric properties. A Cauchy dispersion model was applied, and high-frequency dielectric constants are determined for polarization perpendicular (ε∞,⟂) and parallel (ε∞,∥) to the thin film c-axis. The optical birefringence is negative throughout the …

Niemann Pick type C1 (NPC1) disease is a lysosomal lipid storage disorder caused by mutations of the NPC1 gene. More than 300 disease-associated mutations are reported in patients, resulting in abnormal accumulation of unesterified cholesterol, glycosphingolipids and other lipids in late endosomes and lysosomes (LE/Ly) of many cell types. Previously, we showed that treatment of many different NPC1 mutant fibroblasts with histone deacetylase inhibitors resulted in reduction of cholesterol storage, and we found that this was associated with enhanced exit of the NPC1 protein from the endoplasmic reticulum and delivery to LE/Ly. This suggested that histone deacetylase inhibitors may work …

MOTIVATION: Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a promising biomarker for cancer prognosis and chemosensitivity. Techniques are rapidly evolving for the detection of MSI from tumor-normal paired or tumor-only sequencing data. However, tumor tissues are often insufficient, unavailable, or otherwise difficult to procure. Increasing clinical evidence indicates the enormous potential of plasma circulating cell-free DNA (cfNDA) technology as a noninvasive MSI detection approach.

RESULTS: We developed MSIsensor-ct, a bioinformatics tool based on a machine learning protocol, dedicated to detecting MSI status using cfDNA sequencing data with a potential stable MSIscore threshold of 20%. Evaluation of MSIsensor-ct on independent testing datasets with various …

Mechanisms Of Substrate Recognition By The Cul3-Based E3 Ligase, Katia Graziella De Oliveira Rebola Sep 2021

Mechanisms Of Substrate Recognition By The Cul3-Based E3 Ligase, Katia Graziella De Oliveira Rebola

Dissertations and Theses

Cul3-based E3 ligase is responsible for regulating a variety of cellular pathways, many of which are known to have profound effects on the proper function of multicellular organisms. Although progress over the past years has been truly impressive, our understanding of the mechanisms of E2 recruitment and selection by the BCR complex and all the roles that Cul3 plays on kidneys remains in its infancy. To explore these aspects, this dissertation aims to analyze the Cul3 complex using two different approaches: (1) We used the powerful tool of chimeric analysis to map the essential domain binding characteristics of Cul3 taking …

Agricultural Conservation Practice Adoption Across Midwest Counties: A Review And Analysis Of Determinants, David Werner Sep 2021

Agricultural Conservation Practice Adoption Across Midwest Counties: A Review And Analysis Of Determinants, David Werner

The Park Place Economist

The environmental degradation contemporary Midwestern agricultural practices cause through negative externalities are immense; these realities have led to a greater focus on the introduction of conservation practices. Such practices are sustainable both for the farm operator and the environment, allowing for increased productivity while protecting the environment from undue harm. Focusing on over a thousand counties across the 12 Midwestern states, this paper analyzes various county farm level, producer level, and information level factors that influence conservation practice adoption. Constructing Midwestern farmers as a bounded, rational actor under the bounded rationality theory, results reflect the importance of information in the …

The House Edge And Play Time: Do Industry Heuristics Fairly Describe This Relationship?, Anthony F. Lucas, A.K. Singh

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Based on modified versions of licensed pay tables from reel slot machines, simulations of play failed to indicate a statistically significant difference in the spins per losing player (SPLP), despite a marked difference in the pars (i.e., 7.9% vs. 12.9%). To reflect a volume of play consistent with frequent gambling, the simulations included results from 1-4 visits per week, for the equivalent of one year. Additionally, this level of play was repeated for 100 “years,” within multiple scenarios of buy-in amounts and stoppage-of-play criteria. Still, most outcomes indicated a negligible decline in SPLP, in spite of the 63%-increase in the …

Addressing Heterosexism: Student Narratives Of A Guided Imagery Activity, Jenny L. Cureton, Victoria Giegerich, Jennifer Murdock Bishop

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

A published guided imagery (GI) offers an innovative active learning tool for teaching about heterosexism in counselor education. A literature review precedes the description of a critical narrative inquiry of students’ experiences with the GI activity. A sample of 19 students in two sections of a counseling course recounted stories of their GI experience in individual written reflections and focus group interviews. Findings describe individual and collective meaning-making, resulting in three themes about their struggles, insights, and perspectives of themselves and their personal and professional worlds. Implications for counselor education professionals include conceptualization and implementation of guided imagery for active …

Phosphorus Fertilizer And Stocking Rate Effects On Soil Microbial Biomass Of A Long-Term Dairy Farmlet Experiment, S. R. Aarons, C. R. O’Connor, C. J. P. Gourley

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effects of a range of P fertilizer rates and dairy cow stocking rates on microbial biomass carbon and phosphorus were compared in a long-term farmlet trial in southeastern Australia. Pastures were stocked at 2, 3, or 4 cows/ha and received fertilizer at rates of 0, 35, 70 or 140 kgP/ha. There was no effect of either P fertilizer rate or stocking rate on microbial biomass C from 1995 to 1998. Increasing P application rate significantly increased the chloroform-released microbial P flush measured, but stocking rate had no effect on microbial P. There were significant temporal changes, with the seasonal …

Faculty Publications and Presentations

CAPG focuses on forming a safe community to process and recover from feelings of fear and shame, as seen in the sub-title: Transforming Fear and Shame with Compassion, Courage, and Community. Why make the focus of a personal growth or counseling group fear and shame? Shame, which includes the experience of fear, has been described as a trans-diagnostic, underlying cause of many clinical concerns. CAPG combines best practices for the treatment of shame and fear and explicitly focuses on helping participants form a safe, inclusive relationship with one another to heal from shame.

Native Plant Focused Publications

The Great Plains of North America encompass approximately 1,300,000 km2 of land from Texas to Saskatchewan. The integrity of these lands is under continual assault by long-established and newly-arrived invasive plant species, which can threaten native species and diminish land values and ecological goods and services by degrading desired grassland resources. The Great Plains are a mixture of privately and publicly owned lands, which leads to a patchwork of varying management goals and strategies for controlling invasive plants. Continually updated knowledge is required for efficient and effective management of threats posed by changing environments and invasive plants. Here we discuss …

Localized Learning: A Possible Alternative To Current Deep Learning Techniques, Javier Viana, Kelly Cohen, Anca Ralescu, Stephan Ralescu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

At present, the most efficient deep learning technique is the use of deep neural networks. However, recent empirical results show that in some situations, it is even more efficient to use "localized" learning -- i.e., to divide the domain of inputs into sub-domains, learn the desired dependence separately on each sub-domain, and then "smooth" the resulting dependencies into a single algorithm. In this paper, we provide theoretical explanation for these empirical successes.

Transition Of Living Arrangement And Cognitive Impairment Status Among Chinese Older Adults: Are They Associated?, Yen-Han Lee, Chia Hung Lin, Jia Ren Chang, Ching Ti Liu, Mack Shelley, Yen Chang Chang

College of Health and Human Services

Background and Objectives: Living arrangement is a crucial factor for older adults’ health. It is even more critical for Chinese older adults due to the tradition of filial piety. With the aging of China’s population, the prevalence of cognitive impairment among older adults has increased. This study examines the association between living arrangement transition and cognitive function among Chinese older adults.

Materials and Methods: Using three waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS; 2008–2009, 2011–2012, and 2014), we analyzed data for older adults (age ≥ 65) who lived with other household members and reported good cognitive function or …
