Developing New Prognostic Models For Predicting Outcomes In Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Kwankaew Wongchareon
Developing New Prognostic Models For Predicting Outcomes In Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Kwankaew Wongchareon
Dissertations
Globally, the annual incidence rate of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in all ages is 349 per 100,000 person-years. The incidence of TBI varies across regions, populations, regulations, and health systems; but in general, the rate is expected to be higher in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). As LMICs usually have poor pre-hospital care, delays in patient transfer, lack of facilities and well-trained staff; these make the burden of TBI more devastating and a pressing public health issue. In this dissertation, we focused on several approaches to determine the value of prognostic research in adult patients with severe TBI, test model …

Alfie Scholars Conferences
We should strive towards a society that promotes equality and eradicates all forms of prevalent discrimination. I am going to talk about Chhaoupadi, the Nepalese practice of requiring menstruating women and girls to be in isolation, its history and the demographic that is impacted. I will add my own experience in the beginning of the presentation with some pictures. I will provide the reason behind this practice and how it is rooted in the Nepalese society. At the end I will provide some solutions that show how we can eliminate such an unhealthy and unhygienic practice from the society.
Mutations In Several Auxin Biosynthesis Genes And Their Effects On Plant Phenotypes In Arabidopsis, Gabriela Hernandez, Lauren Huebner, Bethany Karlin Zolman
Mutations In Several Auxin Biosynthesis Genes And Their Effects On Plant Phenotypes In Arabidopsis, Gabriela Hernandez, Lauren Huebner, Bethany Karlin Zolman
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Auxins are important hormones in plants that regulate growth and development. Disruptions in the auxin biosynthesis pathway result in morphological changes in phenotypes in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, including differences in root and leaf formation. Mutations in the Tryptophan Aminotransferase of Arabidopsis (TAA1) and YUCCA (YUC4) genes interfere with the plant's ability to synthesize Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), the primary auxin involved in plant development. IBR1 and IBR3 act in the multistep conversion of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) to IAA. ILL2, IAR3, and ILR1 hydrolyze IAA-amino acid conjugates into free IAA. The goal of …
The Relationship Between Infant-Family Routines, Number Of Caregivers And Infant Basal Cortisol, Vanessa Newell, Hannah B. White
The Relationship Between Infant-Family Routines, Number Of Caregivers And Infant Basal Cortisol, Vanessa Newell, Hannah B. White
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Background: Family routines have been found to be related to child adjustment, marital satisfaction, and parenting competence (Fiese, 2002). Persistent stress, and the resulting frequent activation of the body’s stress responses, can result in excessive wear-and-tear on the body and brain known as allostatic load (McEwen, 2000). In infants, basal cortisol levels act as an instrument to measure allostatic load (White, 2020). To our knowledge, no existing work on the impact of routines on infant development has examined the role of family structure. In traditional and minority cultures it is common for caregiving responsibilities to be divided among multiple individuals. …

Mara Repression Of Virulence Gene Hila In Salmonella, Alexandra King, Lauren Daugherty, Lon Chubiz Phd
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Salmonella is a bacteria most commonly known for causing the eponymous food-related illness. Due to their rapid reproduction rate and their ability to be propogated and maintained in a lab setting, they are commonly used in lab studies so that we can better understand how Salmonella causes disease in organisms that are more difficult to study. One area of interest is analyzing how Salmonella controls expression of the mechanisms that actually cause disease, called virulence traits, in response to the environment. In this study, antibiotic stress was used to analyze virulence gene expression. MarA is a gene that regulates ampicillin …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The long-term effects of using manure as the principal nutrient source in intensive crop production systems are not well known. This paper reports on the effects of multi-year application of fertilizer or dairy slurry on a tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) sward. Slurry sustained greater grass yield than chemical fertilizer. Unlike fertilizer, slurry supplied 70 to 120 kg N/ha one year after application but little after one year; 4-years of manure applications built up the stable organic matter pool in the soil. Manure-N was less prone to leaching but more prone to N2O emissions than fertilizer-N. Manured …

Critical Behavior In Evolutionary And Population Dynamics, Stephen Ordway
Critical Behavior In Evolutionary And Population Dynamics, Stephen Ordway
Dissertations
This study is an exploration of phase transition behavior in evolutionary and population dynamics, and techniques for predicting population changes, across the disciplines of physics, biology, and computer science. Under the looming threat of climate change, it is imperative to understand the dynamics of populations under environmental stress and to identify early warning signals of population decline. These issues are explored here in (1) a computational model of evolutionary dynamics, (2) an experimental system of decaying populations under environmental stress, and (3) a machine learning approach to predict population changes based on environmental factors. Through the lens of critical phase …

Engineering A High-Throughput Screening Platform For Assessing Developmental Neurotoxicity Throughout Head- Regeneration In Schmidtea Mediterranea, Johnathan James Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The increase in commercially used chemicals that are inadequately evaluated for safety and risk to development has created a reticent threat to human health. Addressing these deficiencies is compounded by limited methodologies to determine the etiology of exposure-related developmental neurotoxicity (DNT). Current means of assessing DNT are largely retrospective and limited by the expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive use of laboratory animal models, thereby motivating a global research effort to produce alternative chemical screening assays. In this work, we have developed a novel high- throughput platform that serves as a new tool to evaluate the effects of exogenous chemical exposure on …
Acclimation Of Contact Impedance And Wrist-Based Pulsatile Signal Measurements Through Electrical Bioimpedance, Diego A. Leon
Acclimation Of Contact Impedance And Wrist-Based Pulsatile Signal Measurements Through Electrical Bioimpedance, Diego A. Leon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to expand the understanding of certain properties of electrodes used for electrical bioimpedance measurements. Specifically, this work investigates the acclimation effect of the skin-electrode interface contact impedance. It also attempts to study the relationship between electrode spacing and amplitude of bioimpedance pulsatile signals. It was found that as soon as dry electrodes are placed on the skin, the contact impedance exponentially decreases until it reaches a constant level. The acclimation time, time to reach a constant contact impedance, is dependent of the electrode size and frequency. Increasing the size of the electrode, as well …

Multi-Feature Data Repository Development And Analytics For Image Cosegmentation In High-Throughput Plant Phenotyping, Rubi Quiñones, Francisco Munoz-Arriola, Sruti Das Choudhury, Ashok Samal
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Cosegmentation is a newly emerging computer vision technique used to segment an object from the background by processing multiple images at the same time. Traditional plant phenotyping analysis uses thresholding segmentation methods which result in high segmentation accuracy. Although there are proposed machine learning and deep learning algorithms for plant segmentation, predictions rely on the specific features being present in the training set. The need for a multi-featured dataset and analytics for cosegmentation becomes critical to better understand and predict plants’ responses to the environment. High-throughput phenotyping produces an abundance of data that can be leveraged to improve segmentation accuracy …

The fungal antioxidant system is one of the targets of the redox‐active polyene antifungal drugs, including amphotericin B (AMB), nystatin (NYS), and natamycin (NAT). Besides medical applications, NAT has been used in industry for preserving foods and crops. In this study, we investigated two parameters (pH and food ingredients) affecting NAT efficacy. In the human patho-gen, Aspergillus fumigatus, NAT (2 to 16 μg mL−1) exerted higher activity at pH 5.6 than at pH 3.5 on a defined medium. In contrast, NAT exhibited higher activity at pH 3.5 than at pH 5.6 against food-borne fungal contaminants, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus …
