Acceptance, Confidence, And Time: Exploring Dynamics Of Middle And Secondary Science Teacher Autonomy In Teaching Evolution In The Southeastern United States, Amanda L. Townley
Acceptance, Confidence, And Time: Exploring Dynamics Of Middle And Secondary Science Teacher Autonomy In Teaching Evolution In The Southeastern United States, Amanda L. Townley
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
Evolution education represents the greatest challenge to scientific literacy in the United States. Long accepted as the foundational concept of biology, in the public realm evolution elicits controversy. The Southeastern United States is a breeding ground for this, and other, anti-science thinking that has far-reaching implications as seen during the 2020 pandemic and antiscience legislation from the region. One approach to close gaps in understanding evolution is to ensure that it is taught in schools in a way that is robust and accurate, as teachers are the front lines in the fight for scientific literacy. For that to happen, teachers …
Cyclodextrin-Based Supramolecular Drug-Delivery Nanomaterials And Shear-Thinning Hydrogels Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization, Ruihan Li
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cyclodextrins (CD) are a family of oligosaccharides that can non-covalently and precisely bind small hydrophobic drug molecules, such as antibiotics and anticancer drugs, through well-defined host-guest interactions inside the inner cavity of the macrocycle. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is a versatile, functional group tolerant method of polymerization that is underexplored in biomedical applications relative to the more common controlled chain-growth polymerizations. In this dissertation, I describe my efforts to combine the supramolecular chemistry of CDs with that of ROMP using specialized functional monomers to synthesize several CD-based polymeric drug delivery nanomaterials. For example, in Chapter 2, a new type of …

Smoking, Alcohol Consumption, And Depression In Association With Incidence Of Type 2 Diabetes Among Mexican Americans In Starr County, Texas, Gabriela Rubannelsonkumar
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Previous studies on conditions like obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have explored the correlations between them and various other human conditions, including aortic stiffness, left ventricular hypertrophy and sleep apnea, as they predict possibilities of developing certain diseases in Mexican Americans. This study aims to observe the correlation between lifestyle decisions that could relate to the onset of the depression in normal, prediabetic, and diabetic individuals. These include smoking habits and alcohol consumption. Many papers have previously conducted research on these lifestyle habits as they relate to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, however, have done so in a singular …

INTRODUCTION: Sex disparities exist in coronary artery disease (CAD) in terms of risk profile, clinical management and outcome. It is unclear if differences are also present in coronary aneurysms, a rare variant of CAD.
METHODS: Patients were selected from the international Coronary Artery Aneurysm Registry (CAAR; ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02563626), and differences between groups were analysed according to sex. The CAAR database is a prospective multicentre registry of 1565 patients with coronary aneurysms (336 females). Kaplan-Meier method was used for event-free survival analysis for death, major adverse cardiac events (MACE: composite endpoint of death, heart failure and acute coronary syndrome) and bleeding. …

Levels Of Influence: How Teacher Self-Efficacy Reflects Individual, School, And Country Level Variables, Rachel B. Goldberg
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study investigates relationships between teacher self-efficacy and associated factors not previously studied at an international level. This study used the data gathered through the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) assessment conducted in 2018, with an initial sample size of 107,367 participating teachers from 6,128 schools across 19 countries to gain a global perspective regarding the individual and environmental factors that impact teacher self-efficacy. A blocked hierarchical regression model was chosen to support the theoretical structure of the analysis by examining the relationships between three levels of independent variables and teacher self-efficacy. The model predicted over 30 percent of …

Role Of Serum Amyloid A In Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm And Related Cardiovascular Diseases, Preetha Shridas, Avery C. Patrick, Lisa R. Tannock
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Epidemiological data positively correlate plasma serum amyloid A (SAA) levels with cardiovascular disease severity and mortality. Studies by several investigators have indicated a causal role for SAA in the development of atherosclerosis in animal models. Suppression of SAA attenuates the development of angiotensin II (AngII)-induced abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation in mice. Thus, SAA is not just a marker for cardiovascular disease (CVD) development, but it is a key player. However, to consider SAA as a therapeutic target for these diseases, the pathway leading to its involvement needs to be understood. This review provides a brief description of the pathobiological …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Wealth And Health, Sicong Sun
Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Wealth And Health, Sicong Sun
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Racial wealth inequity is one of the most pressing social and economic issues in the United States, historically and contemporarily. Primarily due to unequal distribution of opportunity for economic advancement and mobility in addition to the accumulation of historic disadvantage endured by Black and Latinx Americans, U.S. racial wealth inequity leads to substantial racial health disparities. It is widely acknowledged that socioeconomic position (SEP) is a fundamental cause of disease and health disparities. Centering around three key constructs—race/ethnicity, wealth, and health—this dissertation had two overarching aims: (a) to investigate the relationship between wealth and health, delineating the effects of wealth …

Modifying The Aspect Survey To Support The Validity Of Student Perception Data From Different Active Learning Environments, Nicole Naibert, Erin E. Shortlidge, Jack Barbera
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Measuring students’ perceptions of active learning activities may provide valuable insight into their engagement and subsequent performance outcomes. A recently published measure, the Assessing Student Engagement in Class Tool (ASPECT), was developed to assess student perceptions of various active learning environments. As such, we sought to use this measure in our courses to assess the students’ perceptions of different active learning environments. Initial results analyzed with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that the ASPECT did not function as expected in our active learning environments. Therefore, before administration within an introductory biology course that incorporated two types of active learning strategies, …
On The Study Of Age-Related Physiological Decline In C. Elegans, Drew Benjamin Sinha
On The Study Of Age-Related Physiological Decline In C. Elegans, Drew Benjamin Sinha
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Aging decline is a universal and unescapable phenomenon; as organisms reach maturity and continue living, physiological function inevitably declines, resulting in mortality. While the study of mortality has been long studied, technical and practical challenges have limited the equally important study of how/when individuals deteriorate and what types of factors affect that deterioration. This gap in knowledge is not only evident in a relative lack of empirical data on physiological decline, but considerable debate around the analysis and conceptual interpretations of the little data that is available.
In this dissertation, I use quantitative reasoning and analysis of longitudinal data to …

Western North American Naturalist
The Aransas-Wood Buffalo population of Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) migrates approximately 4000 km through the central Great Plains biannually, between their breeding and wintering grounds. Whooping Cranes depend on stopover sites to provide secure resting locations and the caloric resources necessary to complete their migration, such as the USFWS-designated critical habitat area in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) of Nebraska. This area includes braided river habitat characterized by low-elevation and submerged sandbars, which provide important roosting and foraging opportunities for migrating Whooping Cranes. We used long-range photography, videography, and behavioral scan sampling to document forage items consumed …
Spatial Variability In Streambed Microbial Community Structure Across Two Watersheds, Philips Akinwole, Jinjun Kan, Louis A. Kaplan, Robert H. Findlay
Spatial Variability In Streambed Microbial Community Structure Across Two Watersheds, Philips Akinwole, Jinjun Kan, Louis A. Kaplan, Robert H. Findlay
Biology Faculty publications
Both spatial and temporal variability are key attributes of sedimentary microbial communities, and while spatial effects on beta-diversity appear to dominate at larger distances, the character of spatial variability at finer scales remains poorly understood, especially for headwater stream communities. We investigated patterns of microbial community structure (MCS) in biofilms attached to streambed sediments from two watersheds across spatial scales spanning ,1 m within a single stream to several hundred kilometers between watersheds. Analyses of phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles indicated that the variations in MCS were driven by increases in the relative abundance of microeukaryotic photoautotrophs and their contribution …

Causal Function And Bias Correlation Of The Orbitofrontal Cortex In Economic Choices, Shi Weikang
Causal Function And Bias Correlation Of The Orbitofrontal Cortex In Economic Choices, Shi Weikang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Economic choices entail two mental processes, value calculation and value comparison (Niehans, 1990). Studies in the last twenty years have shown that neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) could support both processes. Namely, in the studies in which monkeys chose between two juice options with various amounts, three functional cell groups had been found in the OFC: offer value cells encode the value of individual juices, chosen juice cells encode the choice in a binary way and chosen value cells encode the value of the chosen juice (Padoa-Schioppa and Assad, 2006). These results suggest a decision circuit within OFC with …
Mixture Design Response Surface Methodology Analysis Of Seven Natural Bioactive Compounds To Treat Prostate Cancer, Ian Geddes Berlin
Mixture Design Response Surface Methodology Analysis Of Seven Natural Bioactive Compounds To Treat Prostate Cancer, Ian Geddes Berlin
Theses and Dissertations
Natural bioactive compounds have drawn the interest of many researchers worldwide in their effort to find novel treatments, including prostate cancer (PC) treatment which is estimated to be 13.1% of all new cancer cases in the U.S. in 2021. Many of these bioactive compounds have been identified from treatments in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), that often have multiple bioactive compounds present. However, in vitro studies frequently focus on the compounds in isolation, or in simple combinations of two compounds. We used mixture design response surface methodology (MDRSM) to assess changes in PC cell viability after 48 hours of treatment to …

Deconvolving Genomic Regulatory Heterogeneity With Self-Reporting Transposons, Arnav Moudgil
Deconvolving Genomic Regulatory Heterogeneity With Self-Reporting Transposons, Arnav Moudgil
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
A cell’s identity is a function of the genes expressed in that cell, which are in turn regulated by transcription factors. Over the last decade, single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has emerged as a powerful class of techniques to characterize cellular diversity in heterogeneous tissues. These methods barcode transcripts by their cell-of-origin and assign them to specific genes. The resulting high-dimensional data are further processed to reveal clusters of cells sharing transcriptional states. Annotating these clusters, based on either known or discovered marker genes, offers a glimpse into the dynamic composition of an organ or biological process. While single-cell RNA-seq excels …
Influence Of Focal Activity On Macroscale Brain Dynamics In Health And Disease, Zachary Pollack Rosenthal
Influence Of Focal Activity On Macroscale Brain Dynamics In Health And Disease, Zachary Pollack Rosenthal
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Macroscopic recordings of brain activity (e.g. fMRI, EEG) are a sensitive biomarker of the neural networks supporting neurocognitive function. However, it remains largely unclear what mechanisms mediate changes in macroscale networks after focal brain injuries like stroke, seizure, and TBI. Recently, optical neuroimaging in animal models has emerged as a powerful tool to begin addressing these questions. Using widefield imaging of cortical calcium dynamics in mice, this dissertation investigates the mechanisms by which focal disruptions in activity alter brain-wide functional dynamics. In two chapters, I demonstrate 1) that focal sensory stimulation elicits state-dependent, global slow waves propagating from primary somatosensory …
Role Of Interferon Receptors In Sting-Associated Autoinflammatory Disease In Mice, William Alexander Stinson
Role Of Interferon Receptors In Sting-Associated Autoinflammatory Disease In Mice, William Alexander Stinson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, the cGAS-STING pathway has emerged as a principal component of innate DNA sensing. Its activation of type I interferon (IFN) elicits host immune activation and in the absence of cGAS or STING, mice are rendered critically susceptible to infection by viruses and bacteria. Breakdowns in the molecules that regulate this pathway can promote unrestrained cGAS-STING activation and the development of various forms of autoimmune disease. For instance, gain-of-function mutations in STING cause autoinflammatory lung disease in mice and STING-associated vasculopathy with onset in infancy (SAVI) in humans. However, our understanding of the mechanisms that underlie STING-dependent …
Using Single-Particle Fluorescence Microscopy To Elucidate The Role Of Structural Distortions And Defects In The Chemical Reactivity And Photophysics Of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals, Dong Wang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br or I) are attractive for optoelectronic applications due to their unique chemical and physical properties including high photoluminescence quantum yield, tunable bandgaps, high defect tolerance, and low-cost processibility. A facile method to tune the emission wavelength of perovskite nanocrystals is through anion exchange. For light emission applications, it is desirable to prepare CsPbX3 nanocrystals of uniform size and composition. However, the complex reaction kinetics of this chemical transformation may limit the compositional uniformity and color purity of the CsPbX3 nanocrystals produced by anion exchange when the transformation is scaled …
The Role Of Neuronal Atp-Sensitive Potassium Channels In Learning And Memory, Shaul Vladimir Yahil
The Role Of Neuronal Atp-Sensitive Potassium Channels In Learning And Memory, Shaul Vladimir Yahil
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels link cellular metabolism and membrane excitability in many tissues, including brain and pancreas. Gain-of-function (GOF) mutations to KATP channels cause neonatal diabetes, with some patients exhibiting developmental delay, epilepsy, and neonatal diabetes (DEND) syndrome. Diabetic symptoms have been attributed to loss of membrane excitability and insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells, though the origin of neurological deficits and the effects of neuronal KATP-GOF mutations more generally remain elusive. In this dissertation, I will present evidence that mice expressing KATP-GOF mutations pan-neuronally (nKATP-GOF) demonstrated sensorimotor and cognitive deficits, whereas hippocampus-specific hKATP-GOF mice exhibited predominantly learning and memory deficits. …
Structural Variants Are A Major Source Of Gene Expression Differences In Humans And Often Affect Multiple Nearby Genes, Alexandra Jane Scott
Structural Variants Are A Major Source Of Gene Expression Differences In Humans And Often Affect Multiple Nearby Genes, Alexandra Jane Scott
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Structural variants (SVs), including copy number variants (CNVs), balanced rearrangements, and mobile element insertions (MEIs), are an important source of diversity in the human genome but their functional effects are not well understood. SVs are technically difficult to detect and genotype1, and mapping is dependent on deep whole genome sequencing (WGS) which was, until recently, unaffordable for large cohorts. For these reasons SVs are not included in most genome-wide studies of functional variants, despite the fact that SVs are known causal agents in multiple clinical disorders2-16. However, recent advancements in high-throughput sequencing technologies that allow for widespread use of WGS, …
Analyzing The Arguments And Opinions Surrounding Space Privatization, Henry Yaeger
Analyzing The Arguments And Opinions Surrounding Space Privatization, Henry Yaeger
Theses
As space exploration technology advances and more private actors engage in independent space activities, national governments and international organizations need to reform and modernize their approach to regulating private space activities in order to better capture and distribute the benefits of those activities. This paper examines several disparate suggestions and ideas found in 38 articles ranging from current space policy literate to international treaties in order to generate four possible policy approaches to private space activities: the Status Quo, Self-Regulation, New International Treaties and Expanded Public-Private Partnership models. It then compares and contrasts these four alternatives to determine which can …
Analysis Of Camera Trap Footage Through Subject Recognition, Nirnayak Bhardwaj
Analysis Of Camera Trap Footage Through Subject Recognition, Nirnayak Bhardwaj
Master's Projects
Motion-sensitive cameras, otherwise known as camera traps, have become increasingly popular amongst ecologists for studying wildlife. These cameras allow scientists to remotely observe animals through an inexpensive and non-invasive approach. Due to the lenient nature of motion cameras, studies involving them often generate excessive amounts of footage with many photographs not containing any animal subjects. Thus, there is a need for a system that is capable of analyzing camera trap footage to determine if a picture holds value for researchers. While research into automated image recognition is well documented, it has had limited applications in the field of ecology. This …
Computational Methods For Analysis Of Data For Conformational And Phase Equilibria Of Disordered Proteins, Jared Michael M Lalmansingh
Computational Methods For Analysis Of Data For Conformational And Phase Equilibria Of Disordered Proteins, Jared Michael M Lalmansingh
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Intrinsically disordered proteins and regions (IDPs / IDRs) are a class of proteins with diverse conformational heterogeneity that do not fold into a tertiary structure due to the lack of a native structural state. Consequently, disordered proteins are remarkably flexible and exhibit multivalent properties that enable them to adopt myriad functional roles within the cell such as: signaling transduction, transcription, enzymatic catalysis, translation, and many more. Due to their multivalency, some IDPs undergo monomeric and heterotypic interactions which can drive phase separation. Such IDPs can form membraneless organelles with specific regulatory roles within the cell which include, but are not …
