Are Ships Communities Of Practice?, Josephine Nthia, Quentin N. Cox
International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
The purpose of this paper is to explore the idea that a merchant ship aligns with the academic notion of a Community of Practice. Through secondary qualitative research, the paper identifies several characteristics which provide compelling evidence. Young seafarers face multiple challenges joining their first ship, not only in terms of mastering the technicalities of their roles but also in terms of social behaviour and interaction. As anyone contemplating the training of school leavers will realise, the people from whom they learn, will inevitably influence their conduct. Learning on the job is not exclusive to the apprentice. Ship staff will …

Genetic Effects Mediated Through Epistatic Networks Onto Metabolic Traits, Juan Francisco Macias-Velasco
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Predicting variation in complex traits from DNA sequence is a major public health goal, but our understanding of the genotype-to-phenotype relationship is incomplete. It will remain so unless we can adequately integrate genetic, epigenetic, and environmental information into a systems level framework. In a step towards that goal, quantitative trait mapping studies have attempted to account for environmental factors such as sex and diet, and epigenetic factors such as allelic parent-of-origin effects. Several studies used an advanced intercross of the LG/J and SM/J inbred mouse strains to unravel the genetic architecture of multiple metabolic traits. These studies found that parent-of-origin …

Filled/Non-Filled Pairs: An Empirical Challenge To The Integrated Information Theory Of Consciousness, Amber R. Hopkins, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Perceptual filling-in for vision is the insertion of visual properties (e.g., color, contour, luminance, or motion) into one’s visual field, when those properties have no corresponding retinal input. This paper introduces and provides preliminary empirical support for filled/non-filled pairs, pairs of images that appear identical, yet differ by amount of filling-in. It is argued that such image pairs are important to the experimental testing of theories of consciousness. We review recent experimental research and conclude that filling-in involves brain activity with relatively high integrated information (Φ) compared to veridical visual perceptions. We then present filled/non-filled pairs as …

Empathy As A Moderator Of Preservice Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy Beliefs, Juta Tammachart
Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was to examine the relationship model between culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy (CRTSE) and culturally responsive teaching outcome expectancy beliefs (CRTOE) in Thailand. There were two research questions outlined in the study: what is the relationship between preservice teachers’ CRTSE and CRTOE? Also, does the culturally responsive teaching teacher empathy (CRTTE) moderate the relationship of preservice teachers’ CRTSE and CRTOE?
Based on the CRT standards by Siwatu (2005), there were three measures applied in the study: CRTSE, CRTOE, and CRTTE scales. These instruments were piloted with 536 preservice teachers in the Faculty of Education, Prince …
Unexplored Opportunities: Multi-Sector Strategies For Collaboration In Underwater Unexploded Ordnance Remediation, Chris Price
Unexplored Opportunities: Multi-Sector Strategies For Collaboration In Underwater Unexploded Ordnance Remediation, Chris Price
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Few global challenges are as ripe for multi-sector collaboration as underwater (UW) unexploded ordnance (UXO) remediation. Millions of metric tons of UXO are lying on and under the seabed corroding, decaying, and seeping toxic chemicals into the ecosystem—ultimately ending up in our food. Because most underwater UXO are from WWI and WWII, and given the corrosion rates of most metals from which ordnance is made, the inevitable problems with ordnance dumped, sunk, and fired into bodies of water (mostly in coastal regions) are catching up with us. The urgency is exacer-bated by biochemical changes in oceans due to climate change …

3d Bio-Printability Of Hybrid Pre-Crosslinked Hydrogels, Cartwright Nelson, Slesha Tuladhar, Loren Launen, Ahasan Habib
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Maintaining shape fidelity of 3D bio-printed scaffolds with soft biomaterials is an ongoing challenge. Here, a rheological investigation focusing on identifying useful physical and mechanical properties directly related to the geometric fidelity of 3D bio-printed scaffolds is presented. To ensure during- and post-printing shape fidelity of the scaffolds, various percentages of Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) (viscosity enhancer) and different calcium salts (CaCl2 and CaSO4, physical cross-linkers) were mixed into alginate before extrusion to realize shape fidelity. The overall solid content of Alginate-Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) was limited to 6%. A set of rheological tests, e.g., flow curves, amplitude tests, and three interval …

Flavonoids Reduce Lipid Peroxides And Increase Glutathione Levels In Pooled Human Liver Microsomes (Hlms), William Yaw Boadi, Camille Stevenson, Dontrez Johnson, Mohamed Adel Mohamed
Chemistry Faculty Research
The effects of each of the flavonoids; genistein (G), quercetin (Q) and kaempferol (K) at several doses on lipid peroxides (LP) and reduced glutathione (GSH) in pooled human liver microsomes (HLMs) were investigated following the oxidative damage for 4, 6, 18 and 24 hr. HLMs (1 mg/ml) were exposed to each of the above flavonoids at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 μM and incubated for the respective times as previously stated. Our hypothesis was that HLMs exposed to the flavonoids for the respective exposure times can decrease LP and increase GSH in HLMs to better cope with the …

Moderate Prenatal Ethanol Exposure, Sex, And Housing Modify Spatial Navigation Behavior And Hippocampal Cell Firing In Adult Rodents, Christy Magcalas
Psychology ETDs
Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is associated with structural and physiological changes that impact the central nervous system and can result in persistent negative consequences in a broad spectrum of cognitive and behavioral domains including deficits in spatial learning and memory and behavioral flexibility. The current study focuses on examining the behavioral and mechanistic consequences of PAE, sex and housing. Rats were tested in the Morris Water Task where they were trained to navigate to a goal location and tested in a pool shift manipulation. There were no significant differences between PAE treatment, sex, or housing groups during training, but there …

Building The Path To Early Alzheimer's Prediction Using Machine Learning, Kincaid Rowbotham, Ling Li, Xusheng Wang
Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and one of the most prominent challenges of precision healthcare is early identification of AD. To combat this latency in diagnosis, integration of machine learning has been exercised for more cost efficient and powerful diagnostic tools. Specifically, we have developed a workflow for identifying AD within a given sample. Utilizing cerebral cortex proteomic data as a baseline, we were able to test two different forms of feature selection and 6 different machine learning methods. The best performing of these combinations was using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) method with features …

Juvenile Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) Feeding Habits, Movement And Residency In A Northern Temperate Estuary, Amy E. Webb
All Student Scholarship
River herring is a term applied collectively to both alewife, Alosa pseudoharengus, and blueback herring, A. aestivalis, anadromous fish that spend most of their life in the ocean and migrate upriver to freshwater to spawn each spring (NEFSC 2006). Juveniles spend their first summer in freshwater and are thought to migrate to the ocean in fall, where they remain until they are sexually mature and ready to spawn (three to five years; ASMFC 2012).

Mapping Neural Responses Onto Innate And Acquired Behavior: From Insect Olfaction To Realizing A Bio-Hybrid Chemical Recognition System, Rishabh Chandak
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In many organisms, the sense of smell, driven by the olfactory system, serves as the primary sensory modality that guides a plethora of behaviors such as foraging for food, finding mates, and evading predators. Using an array of biological sensors, the olfactory system converts volatile chemical inputs from an organism’s environment into well-patterned neural responses that inform downstream motor neurons to drive appropriate behaviors (e.g., moving towards food or away from danger). For many external cues, the elicited neural responses are often determined by the genetic makeup of the organism, which assigns an innate preference, or valence, for these different …
Identifying Structures For Ion Channel Kinetic Models, Kathryn Mangold
Identifying Structures For Ion Channel Kinetic Models, Kathryn Mangold
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Voltage-gated ion channels carry transmembrane current and underlie the voltages changes seen during the action potential. The ion channels open and close precisely, or gate, in response to voltage to create the specific cellular action potential waveform. The first models of voltage-gated ion channels gating dynamics were described by Hodgkin and Huxley when studying the neuronal action potential in the squid giant axon. While the probabilistic gating variables cleverly imagined by Hodgkin and Huxley to describe channel gating are still used today to describe cardiac ionic currents, Markov (or state-dependent) models provide a more accurate representation of channel dynamics. As …

Measuring Science Teachers' Emotional Experiences With Evolution Using Real World Scenarios, William Lee Romine, Rutuja Mahajan, Amber Todd
Measuring Science Teachers' Emotional Experiences With Evolution Using Real World Scenarios, William Lee Romine, Rutuja Mahajan, Amber Todd
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Low acceptance of evolution remains an obstacle to quality biology instruction. We develop and utilize a novel assessment which measures emotional experience in light of real-world evolution education scenarios. We presented 296 science teachers 4 pro-evolution and 8 anti-evolution scenarios and asked them to rate their levels of joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, shame, and guilt elicited by that scenario on an ordinal 5-point scale. We used exploratory factor analysis to extract the most important dimensions in the teachers’ responses, Rasch analysis to explore the validity of the extracted subscales, and stepwise regression to find the most important factors driving …

A two-year study (harvest years 2019 and 2020) was conducted to investigate the effect of a commercially available biofertilizer, in combination with variable nitrogen (N) rate, on bread baking quality and agronomic traits in hard winter wheat grown in conventional (CONV) and organic (ORG) farming systems in Kentucky, USA. The hard red winter wheat cultivar ‘Vision 45’ was used with three N rates (44, 89.6 and 134.5 kg/ha as Low, Med and High, respectively) and three biofertilizer spray regimes (no spray, one spray and two sprays). All traits measured were significantly affected by the agricultural production system (CONV or ORG) …
Characterization And Proteolytic Maturation Of Head Proteins In A Giant Salmonella Virus, Aaron Scheuch
Characterization And Proteolytic Maturation Of Head Proteins In A Giant Salmonella Virus, Aaron Scheuch
Theses
Giant phages are of interest for biocontrol of pathogenic bacteria, however, there is limited knowledge about their biology. We study the Salmonella phage SPN3US to better understand virion structure and function. SPN3US has a contractile tail and a large T=27 icosahedral capsid that contains its 240-kb genome. Previous analyses showed the SPN3US virion is highly unusual because it contains >80 different proteins, a number that is highly unusual for a tailed phage. In addition, there is a mass (>40 MDa) of proteins ("ejection proteins") within the head that enter the Salmonella cell, possibly with roles in host takeover at …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Myocardial Infarction (MI) is one of the most common cardiac conditions in older adults. As the pathophysiological processes underlying human diseases are complex, I utilized all available data to predict the incidence of future MI using exploratory factor analysis. Six factors were identified, each representing a unique risk dimension based on loaded observed variables, e.g., the hemodynamic factor loaded systolic, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate variables. Four factors (hemodynamic, smoking, blood lipids, and alcohol consumption) were detected as risk factors for future MI. The burden of chronic conditions among children and adolescents is increasing and one of its risk …

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COIVD-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a highly infectious respiratory illness. Within just a few months, it spread around the whole world and became a global pandemic. Real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) works as a gold standard method diagnosing COVID-19 with high sensitivity and specificity. But due to the programs of RT-PCR, it usually takes more than 24 hours to get the results while specialized devices are also required. False-negative results can happen as well using RT-PCR which increase the risk of spreading coronavirus. To promote quicker detection of COVID-19, …
Identification Of Candidate Microbial Biomarkers Of Disease And Design Of Engineered Microbial Therapeutics For The Gut Microbiome, Aura Lucia Ferreiro
Identification Of Candidate Microbial Biomarkers Of Disease And Design Of Engineered Microbial Therapeutics For The Gut Microbiome, Aura Lucia Ferreiro
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The human gut microbiome is a compositionally and functionally diverse community of microorganisms that profoundly influences the health of the host. Deep characterization of gut microbiomes via high-throughput sequencing has identified associations between the gut microbiome and disease states, and spurred development of engineered microbial therapeutics. Successful translation of these research efforts to the clinic will involve i) consideration of how engineered microbes behave and adapt in the gut, towards the implementation of biosafety mechanisms, and ii) identification and validation of microbial biomarkers of disease. This dissertation describes both investigative (Chapter 2) and engineering (Chapters 3 and 4) approaches to …
Quantifying Components Of Protein Translation And Metabolite Heterogeneity In Isogenic Microbial Populations, Alexander Schmitz
Quantifying Components Of Protein Translation And Metabolite Heterogeneity In Isogenic Microbial Populations, Alexander Schmitz
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Cell-to-cell variation in gene expression and metabolite levels have a significant impact on ensemble productivity of microbial bioproduction. New metabolic engineering tools and approaches are needed that consider cell cultures as an amalgam of uniquely behaving individuals to improve the slow commercialization of metabolically engineered systems. Stochastic cellular process including gene expression, metabolism, and growth lead to phenotypic variation between genetically identical cells. Understanding and the ability to control microbial phenotypic variation is key to improving microbial bioproduction metrics. During protein translation, codon usage strongly influences ensemble gene expression but the effect on the variation of gene expression was not …
Zebrafish Models Of Katp Channelopathies, Soma S. Singareddy
Zebrafish Models Of Katp Channelopathies, Soma S. Singareddy
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Much work has been carried out to understand the composition, structure, and function of ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels in mammalian tissues, as well as the molecular basis of the channelopathies that result from loss-of-function or gain-of-function mutations in these channels. These studies have also highlighted that the available pharmacology to treat such diseases is limited. To overcome such limitations, a better understanding of the tissue specificity of expression, the exact mechanisms linking the molecular dysfunction to the development of complex pathophysiology, the potential for reducing cross-reactivity of drugs, and ultimately more specific therapies are needed. The work described in this …

Short-Term Memory And Olfactory Signal Processing, Lijun Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Modern neural recording methodologies, including multi-electrode and optical recordings, allow us to monitor the large population of neurons with high temporal resolution. Such recordings provide rich datasets that are expected to understand better how information about the external world is internally represented and how these representations are altered over time. Achieving this goal requires the development of novel pattern recognition methods and/or the application of existing statistical methods in novel ways to gain insights into basic neural computational principles. In this dissertation, I will take this data-driven approach to dissect the role of short-term memory in olfactory signal processing in …

Despite the curative potential of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), conditioning-associated toxicities preclude broader clinical application. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) provide an attractive approach to HSCT conditioning that minimizes toxicity while retaining efficacy. Initial studies of ADC conditioning have largely focused on syngeneic HSCT. However, to treat acute leukemias or induce tolerance for solid organ transplantation, this approach must be expanded to allogeneic HSCT (allo-HSCT). Using murine allo-HSCT models, we show that pharmacologic Janus kinase 1/2 (JAK1/2) inhibition combined with CD45- or cKit-targeted ADCs enables robust multilineage alloengraftment. Strikingly, myeloid lineage donor chimerism exceeding 99% was achievable in fully MHC-mismatched HSCT …

Finland’s educational prowess, though tempered by recent international assessments, has remained intact. This report focused on lessons that could be learned regarding secondary-level science education from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015, science-focused assessment. That PISA iteration included not only science literacy but also students’ science dispositions (epistemology, enjoyment, interest, and self-efficacy) and the schools’ science climate measures (disciplinary climate and teaching support). Due to the hierarchical nature of the PISA data, multilevel models were employed in this Finnish study, involving 5582 students from 167 schools. Science dispositions (as outcome measures) were differently associated with teaching support and …
