Over the past decade, the scientific community has studied, experimented, and published a notable body of literature on ecological enhancement of coastal and marine infrastructure (CMI). The Nature-Inclusive Design (NID) approach refers to methods and technologies that can be integrated into the design and construction of CMI to create suitable habitat for native species (or communities) whose natural habitat has been degraded or reduced. To examine the compliance of new environmentally sensitive technologies with structural requirements and fiscal restraints, while providing ecosystem and habitat value, this paper presents the findings of a structural-economical-biological analysis of ecologically engineered Articulated Concrete Block …

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a routinely used imaging technique in medical diagnostics. To enhance the quality of MR images, contrast agents (CAs) are used, which account for nearly 40% of MRI exams in the clinic globally. The most used CAs are gadolinium-based CAs (GBCAs) but the use of GBCAs has been linked with metal-deposition in vital organs. Gadolinium deposition has been shown to be correlated with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, a fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Therefore, there is an unmet need for a new CA alternative to GBCAs for T 1-weighted Ce-MRI. Herein, we designed paramagnetic ferric …

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Cancer is one of the biggest threatens to human health. Many people died because of various types of cancer. Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of new incidence and mortality in the whole world. It is important to understand the mechanism of tumorigenesis and development. Based on the mechanisms, we may develop new therapeutics to improve survival rate. In Chapter 2, we discussed the PINK1 function in suppression colon cancer. We found that PINK1 deficiency can promote colon cancer, and PINK1 overexpression suppressed tumor growth in vivo and in vitro. PINK1 can activate its substrate P53, which activates …

Crowd Salience Heightens Tolerance To Healthy Facial Features, Mitch Brown, Ryan E. Tracy, Steven G. Young, Donald F. Sacco
Publications and Research
Objective: Recent findings suggest crowd salience heightens pathogen-avoidant motives, serving to reduce individuals’ infection risk through interpersonal contact. Such experiences may similarly facilitate the identification, and avoidance, of diseased conspecifics. The current experiment sought to replicate and extend previous crowding research.
Methods: In this experiment, we primed participants at two universities with either a crowding or control experience before having them evaluate faces manipulated to appear healthy or diseased by indicating the degree to which they would want to interact with them.
Results: Crowding-primed participants reported a more heightened preferences for healthy faces than control-primed participants. Additionally, crowd salience reduced …

Metformin Selectively Dampens The Acute Inflammatory Response Through An Ampk-Dependent Mechanism, Thomas S Postler, Vincent Peng, Dev M Bhatt, Sankar Ghosh
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Metformin is a first-line drug in the treatment of type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In addition to its antigluconeogenic and insulin-sensitizing properties, metformin has emerged as a potent inhibitor of the chronic inflammatory response of macrophages. In particular, metformin treatment has been shown to reduce expression of interleukin (IL-) 1β during long-term exposure to the pro-inflammatory stimulus lipopolysaccharide (LPS) through a reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS), which decreases the levels of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) 1-α, and through enhanced expression of IL-10. However, the effect of metformin on the acute inflammatory response, before significant levels of ROS accumulate in the …

The Stability Of The Critical Points Of The Generalized Gause Type Predator-Prey Fishery Models With Proportional Harvesting And Time Delay.Pdf, Wan Natasha Wan Hussin, Rohana Embong, Che Noorlia Noor
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
In the marine ecosystem, the time delay or lag may occur in the predator response function, which measures the rate of capture of prey by a predator. This is because, when the growth of the prey population is null at the time delay period, the predator’s growth is affected by its population and prey population densities only after the time delay period. Therefore, the generalized Gause type predator-prey fishery models with a selective proportional harvesting rate of fish and time lag in the Holling type II predator response function are proposed to simulate and solve the population dynamical problem. From …

Background Increased systolic blood pressure variability (BPV) is associated with stroke, cardiovascular disease, and dementia and mild cognitive impairment. However, prior studies assessing the relationship between BPV and dementia or mild cognitive impairment had infrequent measurement of blood pressure or suboptimal blood pressure control. Methods and Results We performed a post hoc analysis of the SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) MIND (Memory and Cognition in Decreased Hypertension) trial. The primary outcome was probable dementia during follow-up. We defined our exposure period, during which blood pressures were collected, as the first 600 days of the trial, and outcomes were ascertained …

Where They Sing Solo: Accounting For Cross-Cultural Variation In Collective Music-Making In Theories Of Music Evolution, Aniruddh D. Patel, Christopher Von Rueden
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Collective, synchronous music-making is far from ubiquitous across traditional, small-scale societies. We describe societies that lack collective music and offer hypotheses to help explain this cultural variation. Without identifying the factors that explain variation in collective music-making across these societies, theories of music evolution based on social bonding (Savage et al.) or coalition signaling (Mehr et al.) remain incomplete.

Anomaly Detection In Encrypted Internet Traffic Using Hybrid Deep Learning, Taimur Bakhshi, Bogdan Ghita
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
An increasing number of Internet application services are relying on encrypted traffic to offer adequate consumer privacy. Anomaly detection in encrypted traffic to circumvent and mitigate cyber security threats is, however, an open and ongoing research challenge due to the limitation of existing traffic classification techniques. Deep learning is emerging as a promising paradigm, allowing reduction in manual determination of feature set to increase classification accuracy. The present work develops a deep learning-based model for detection of anomalies in encrypted network traffic. Three different publicly available datasets including the NSL-KDD, UNSW-NB15, and CIC-IDS-2017 are used to comprehensively analyze encrypted attacks …

Background
Hypertriglyceridemia has emerged as a critical coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factor. Rare loss-of-function (LoF) variants in apolipoprotein C-III have been reported to reduce triglycerides (TG) and are cardioprotective in American Indians and Europeans. However, there is a lack of data in other Europeans and non-Europeans. Also, whether genetically increased plasma TG due to ApoC-III is causally associated with increased CAD risk is still unclear and inconsistent. The objectives of this study were to verify the cardioprotective role of earlier reported six LoF variants of APOC3 in South Asians and other multi-ethnic cohorts and to evaluate the causal association …

Can Deliberative Democracy Favor A Flourishing Relationship Between Humans And Carnivores?, John A. Vucetich, Jeremy T. Bruskotter, David W. Macdonald
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
There is considerable interest in improving participatory governance in decision-making processes for the conservation of biodiversity and management of conflicts between humans and wildlife. Among the various modes of participatory governance, deliberative democracy has received virtually no attention for decisions focused on conserving biodiversity. This is surprising given that deliberative democracy is an important branch of democratic theory and is associated with decision-making processes that have been successfully applied to a wide range of complicated decisions across diverse cultural settings. Moreover, deliberative democracy has several distinctive properties that would seem to make it well-suited for many conservation decisions. First, deliberative …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Evidence from observational studies indicates that endometriosis and depression often co-occur. However, conflicting evidence exists, and the etiology as well as biological mechanisms underlying their comorbidity remain unknown. Utilizing genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, we comprehensively assessed the relationship between endometriosis and depression. Single nucleotide polymorphism effect concordance analysis (SECA) found a significant genetic overlap between endometriosis and depression (PFsig-permuted = 9.99 × 10−4). Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) analysis estimated a positive and highly significant genetic correlation between the two traits (rG = 0.27, P = 8.85 × 10−27). A meta-analysis of endometriosis and depression GWAS (sample size = …

Chemical Warfare In Wwi: The Psychological Corrosion Of Soldiers Via Chemical Warfare And The 1925 Geneva Convention’S Involvement In Eradicating Future Gaseous Afflictions, Lakin Davis
West Virginia University Historical Review
The discourse surrounding mental health awareness has progressed throughout decades of research, stigma breaking, and connectedness; however, this trend of growth regarding mental illnesses was not as forgiving over a century ago, during and directly after the Great War. Natural elements of war alone caused tumultuous suffering for soldiers within the Triple Entente and the Central Powers. Yet, it was the man-made technologies of World War I that caused the deepest traumas, particularly the chemical variants created by Fritz Haber. By examining this history through a psychological lens, the British soldiers exposed to chemical warfare from Ypres to Verdun are …
Insect Developmental Plasticity: The Role In A Changing Environment, Lindsey A. Barnes
Insect Developmental Plasticity: The Role In A Changing Environment, Lindsey A. Barnes
The Cardinal Edge
Climate change has been recognized as a severe threat to biodiversity. In the rapidly growing collection of literature on the consequences of global change, researchers have recently noticed a dramatic decrease in insect populations in a wide range of habitats. Insects are extremely susceptible to climatic change, especially with regard to fluctuations in moisture and temperature. However, insects often exhibit phenotypic plasticity, where organisms will express different phenotypes when presented with a specific environmental stimulus. In developmental plasticity, environmental stimuli at the larval stage can determine adult phenotypes. This review focuses on case studies of developmental plasticity in insects, with …

A Literature Review On The Development Of Upper Limbs In Humans, Anh T. Phan
The Cardinal Edge
The development of tetrapod upper limbs shares an evolutionary origin and has been adapted and specialized for different functions for different species, such as flight in birds, swimming and balance in sea mammals, and coordination and grabbing objects in humans. The basis of tetrapod limb development has common developmental patterns, starting with the formation of the limb bud via Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling, where later developmental steps are modified for specialized functions. This review covers the basic developmental patterns of mammalian tetrapod development seen in humans, beginning with the formation of the limb bud, to the axis development of the …
Angiogenesis' Effect Overall On Health And Disease, Wendy Tang
Angiogenesis' Effect Overall On Health And Disease, Wendy Tang
The Cardinal Edge
Angiogenesis plays a major role in the development of diseases and cancer. The development of illnesses like metastatic breast cancer, cell carcinomas, tumors and various other illnesses, originate from the activation of endothelial cells. When the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is released from hypoxic tissues, they bind to vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFR). The binding of VEGF and VEGFR allows for cellular proliferation, increased migration of lattice networks, and the invasion of endothelial cells, which stimulate the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. As a result, it can be concluded that the inhibition of VEGFs would …

Inner Ear Development And Advances In Inner Ear Organoid Formation, Paige Avery
Inner Ear Development And Advances In Inner Ear Organoid Formation, Paige Avery
The Cardinal Edge
The inner ear houses the cochlea which contains hair cells responsible for the transduction of sound waves. The process of forming these hair cells responsible for hearing is a complicated process consisting of many signaling factors that allow ectoderm to form into the otic placode, the otic vesicle, and finally prosensory cells such as hair cells (Schlosser, 2006). Loss of these hair cells contributes to deafness and hearing loss throughout life, and regeneration of these cells may serve as a therapeutic agent for those with irreversible damage. This review looks at the development of the otic placode and hair cells …
