Journal of Islamic Law Studies
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersexual, Queer (LGBTIQ) is a phenomenon that spreads in the modern era as a form of sexual deviation which is strongly influenced by wrong parenting, inadequate Islamic religious education, bad social relations, and factors from poor information and communication obtained from social media. The growth and development of children include important aspects that must be balanced and directed proportionally. Aspects of children's growth and development include: spirituality (faith), physical (physical), psychological (psychic), intellectual, emotional, moral, social, sexual, and economic should be balanced with each other. If parents and teachers can balance these aspects of education, understanding …

Recombinant adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) allow rapid and efficient gene delivery in the nervous system. AAVs are widely used in research and are the basis of multiple FDA-approved gene therapies. Here, we find that the immune response to AAV’s genome reduces dendritic complexity in mammalian cortex. Dendritic loss associated with AAV-mediated gene delivery occurs at experimentally-relevant titers, cannot be explained by responses to transgene expression or surgery, and is not restricted to a particular capsid serotype, encoded transgene, promoter, or production facility. AAV-associated dendritic loss is accompanied by a decrease in the frequency and amplitude of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) …
Conjunctional Concepts: The Conceptual Teaching Technique In Biology Classes, Igor V. Zaitsev
Conjunctional Concepts: The Conceptual Teaching Technique In Biology Classes, Igor V. Zaitsev
Publications and Research
Conceptual teaching relies on concepts in conjunction with a bigger conceptual category (or categories). Revealing and using conceptual conjunctions in the science classroom means teaching conceptually. To make conceptual teaching more accessible to biology instructors, a three-concept model was described to be used during a lecture. This model has allowed the author to develop a relatively simple method that starts with an active concept or concepts, then introduces conjunctional and supporting concepts to relate the content to other concepts and relevant real-world applications. This method is intended to help instructors in preparing to teach biological concepts conceptually, in order to …

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
This paper analyzes the novel El último sueño (López 2018) and concludes that it is an optimal example of a new interpretation of Posthumanism whereon the portrayed modern subjects seek to retrieve the Humanist logic lacking in our apocalyptic times, giving birth in the process to a new fictional representation of Posthumanism in the times of the Anthropocene.

Historically, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the ocean has been attributed to photochemical and biochemical reactions. However, hydrothermal vents emit globally significant inventories of reduced Fe and S species that should react rapidly with oxygen in bottom water and serve as a heretofore unmeasured source of ROS. Here, we show that the Fe-catalyzed oxidation of reduced sulfur species in hydrothermal vent plumes in the deep oceans supported the abiotic formation of ROS at concentrations 20 to 100 times higher than the average for photoproduced ROS in surface waters. ROS (measured as hydrogen peroxide) were determined in hydrothermal …

The Teacher Viewpoint: How Administrator Gender Impacts Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Building Leadership, Kathleen Stigliano
The Teacher Viewpoint: How Administrator Gender Impacts Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Building Leadership, Kathleen Stigliano
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The purpose of this study was to deeply explore the perceived leadership styles of male and female building administrators, and to identify the ways in which gender may influence how teachers perceive the overall effectiveness of their building’s leadership. The significance of the study is that it looks beyond the intricacies of what it takes to become an effective leader; it considers those leadership skills and practices specifically through the lens of gender and teacher perceptions. For this study, a phenomenological qualitative approach was utilized, guided by two research questions:
-
What characteristics/traits/ attributes, if any, do teachers perceive to be …

Meals In The Melting-Pot: Immigration And Dietary Change In Diversifying Cities, Nicola Frances Rule, Colin Charles Dring, Thomas F. Thornton
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Changes in diets and food practices have implications for personal and planetary health. As these implications have become more apparent, dietary change interventions that seek to promote healthy and sustainable transitions have proliferated, and the processes and drivers of dietary change have come under increasing scrutiny. In particular, dietary acculturation has been recognised as a driver of dietary change in the context of immigration to expanding, cosmopolitan cities. However, research has largely focused on changes in the diets of immigrants and ethnic minorities. In contrast, this study contributes to our understanding of the process of dietary acculturation among the largest …

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease with a high rate of progression to critical illness. However, the stratification of patients at risk of mortality is not well defined. In this study, we aimed to define a mortality risk index to allocate patients to the appropriate intensity of care.
Methods: This is a 12 months observational longitudinal study designed to develop and validate a pragmatic mortality risk score to stratify COVID-19 patients aged ≥18 years and admitted to hospital between March 2020 and March 2021. Main outcome was in-hospital mortality.
Results: 244 patients were included in the study (mortality …
Neural Network Learning Of Improved Compressive Sensing Sampling And Receptive Field Structure, Victor J. Barranca
Neural Network Learning Of Improved Compressive Sensing Sampling And Receptive Field Structure, Victor J. Barranca
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
While the theory of compressive sensing (CS) in modern signal processing typically indicates that uniformly random sampling facilitates the efficient recovery of sparse signals, such measurements are infeasible in many engineering applications and are not well reflected by the constraints of natural systems, including neuronal networks in the brain. Uniformly random sampling also does not leverage the underlying structure of many classes of signals, and may therefore be suboptimal in these cases. We address these issues by formulating a novel neural network framework for learning improved CS sampling based on the intrinsic structure present in classes of training signals. Beyond …

Factors Influencing The Relationship Between Work-Related Stress And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Working Black Adults In The United States, Paul C. Archibald
Publications and Research
Introduction: Work-related stress (WRS) and posttraumatic disorder (PTSD) is higher among Black adults relative to their White counterparts. Trauma exposure is not the only connection to increased risk for PTSD as WRS is highly associated with risk for PTSD. However, the factors that link WRS and PTSD among working Black adults is not well understood. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional data from the National Survey of American Life was used to examine the relationship between WRS and PTSD among 2,139 working Black adults and to determine whether there are influencing factors. Results: Logistic regression analyses revealed that working …
