Spatial Frameworks For Robust Estimation Of Yield Gaps, Juan I. Rattalino Edreira, José F. Andrade, Kenneth G. Cassman, Martin K. Ittersum, Marloes P. Van Loon, Patricio Grassini
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Food security interventions and policies need reliable estimates of crop production and the scope to enhance production on existing cropland. Here we assess the performance of two widely used ‘top-down’ gridded frameworks (Global Agro-ecological Zones and Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project) versus an alternative ‘bottom-up’ approach (Global Yield Gap Atlas). The Global Yield Gap Atlas estimates extra production potential locally for a number of sites representing major breadbaskets and then upscales the results to larger spatial scales. We find that estimates from top-down frameworks are alarmingly unlikely, with estimated potential production being lower than current farm production at some …

In the past few decades, the control of pests and diseases of cultivated plants using natural and biological measures has drawn increasing attention in the quest to reduce the level of dependence on chemical products for agricultural production. The use of living organisms, predators, parasitoids, and microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi, has proven to be a viable and sustainable pest management technique. Among the aforementioned, fungi, most importantly the insect-pathogenic species, have been in use for more than 150years. These include the most popular strains belonging to the genera Beauveria, Metarhizium, Isaria, Hirsutella, and Lecanicillium. Their application is …

Comparison Of Some Methods For Estimating Mixture Of Linear Regression Models With Application, Urdak Ibrahim Kareem, Fadhaa Mezher Hashim
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
A mixture model is used to model data that come from more than one component. In recent years, it became an effective tool in drawing inferences about the complex data that we might come across in real life. Moreover, it can represent a tremendous confirmatory tool in classification observations based on similarities amongst them. In this paper, several mixture regression-based methods were conducted under the assumption that the data come from a finite number of components. A comparison of these methods has been made according to their results in estimating component parameters. Also, observation membership has been inferred and assessed …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of Indonesia’s National Health Insurance (NHI) on health care utilization. Specifically, by performing logistic regressions with the national socioeconomic data of 2018, we analyzed health-seeking behavior between insured and inunsured people together with selected socioeconomic factors. The results revealed that insured people were more likely to utilize the NHI services than uninsured people. Additionally, the utilization pattern was more significant in socially vulnerable groups, particularly lower-income, lower-educated, unemployed, and rural beneficiaries. Assuming that one of the ultimate goals of social health insurance is to enhance the equity of health care …

Attention develops throughout childhood and enables adaptive behavior for meeting daily demands in school and during social interactions. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) represents the most common cause of childhood attention impairment. Arriving at an accurate diagnosis is often the central goal of assessment, and in clinical settings, there is additional emphasis on the need for assessment to aid in case conceptualization, treatment planning, and progress monitoring. Assessment of ADHD requires parents, teachers and clinical interviews, observation, neuropsychological measures and neurophysiological investigations. Rating scales may be the most useful diagnostic tool in demonstrating attention impairment, but their utility is limited …

The emerging technology in biomedical engineering requires biocompatible materials, which are also referred to as biomaterials. For a material to be considered biocompatible, it should not interact with human tissues in a harmful way, and vice versa. Various properties of biocompatible materials, such as mechanical and optical properties, have to be considered for different biomedical applications. One of the most popular applications of biomaterials is for contact lenses. Hydrogels, specifically poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels, are among the most popular ones in ophthalmologic applications, especially in soft contact lenses. This paper reviews the use of PHEMA hydrogels as one of the …

Black garlic or shallot are products of processed garlic and shallots obtained through a heating process conducted over a certain period. Black garlic/shallots have a mild aroma with a sweet and sour taste. The heating process causes chemical compound transition in the garlic, including acidity. In addition to the chemical process, the garlic’s color and component changes are due to the role of microorganisms during black garlic processing. However, the presence and function of such microorganisms have not been identified. Therefore, this research explores the black garlic’s microorganisms, their role in black garlic processing, and their relation to the total …

Worldwide, ∼196 million are afflicted with endometriosis, a painful disease in which endometrial tissue implants and proliferates on abdominal peritoneal surfaces. Theories on the origin of endometriosis remained inconclusive. Whereas up to 90% of women experience retrograde menstruation, only 10% develop endometriosis, suggesting that factors that alter peritoneal environment might contribute to endometriosis. Herein, we report that whereas some gut bacteria promote endometriosis, others protect against endometriosis by fermenting fiber to produce short-chain fatty acids. Specifically, we found that altered gut microbiota drives endometriotic lesion growth and feces from mice with endometriosis contained less of short-chain fatty acid and n-butyrate …

Palouse Prairie: Ethics Behind The Loss Of An Ecosystem, Hailey V. Smith
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
There is an ethical tradeoff between growing high-yield agricultural products and the integrity and goodness of an ecosystem. Why must we protect an ecosystem and prevent extinction of other organisms? One might claim that the human benefit gained from environmental destructions for the purpose of agriculture is more valuable than any life or structure that existed in the ecosystem. In the case of the Palouse Prairie in Eastern Washington, early white settlers in the area valued the monetary gains from agriculture more than any goodness of an intact ecosystem. Unlike the benefits gained from farming (which could be attained through …

Hegel, Marx, And The Realization Of The Self In Work: Towards A Humanistic Ontology Of Labor, Omar Khali
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
It has become evident in advanced capitalism that the worker’s relation between their labor and their selfhood remains unclear and distorted. For many, labor is merely a means for putting food on the table and a roof over their head. This does not mean, however, that labor in itself gives rise to this prevailing relation.
