Anthropocentrism: More Than Just A Misunderstood Problem, Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor, John Piccolo
Anthropocentrism: More Than Just A Misunderstood Problem, Helen Kopnina, Haydn Washington, Bron Taylor, John Piccolo
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Anthropocentrism, in its original connotation in environmental ethics, is the belief that value is human-centered and that all other beings are means to human ends. Environmentally-concerned authors have argued that anthropocentrism is ethically wrong and at the root of ecological crises. Some environmental ethicists argue, however, that critics of anthropocentrism are misguided or even misanthropic. They contend: first that criticism of anthropocentrism can be counterproductive and misleading by failing to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate human interests. Second, that humans differ greatly in their environmental impacts, and consequently, addressing human inequalities should be a precondition for environmental protection. Third, since …

Local And Systemic Cytokine, Chemokine, And Fgf Profile In Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis (Bco)-Affected Broilers, Alison Ramser, Elizabeth Greene, Robert Wideman, Sami Dridi
Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Complex disease states, like bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), not only result in physiological symptoms, such as lameness, but also a complex systemic reaction involving immune and growth factor responses. For the modern broiler (meat-type) chickens, BCO is an animal welfare, production, and economic concern involving bacterial infection, inflammation, and bone attrition with a poorly defined etiology. It is, therefore, critical to define the key inflammatory and bone-related factors involved in BCO. In this study, the local bone and systemic blood profile of inflammatory modulators, cytokines, and chemokines was elucidated along with inflammasome and key FGF genes. BCO-affected bone showed …

Yellow-Flowered Lucerne (Medicago Falcata L.) - A Potential Forage Legume For The North, T. Mela, H. Ihamäki, M. Matilainen
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The suitability of yellow-flowered lucerne (Medicago falcata L.) for forage production under the northern conditions was studied in a mixture sward with timothy (Phleum pratense L.) in field trials in South Finland for four years from 1995 to 1998. Through the first three winters lucerne stayed unharmed. In June and July lucerne grew vigorously, but in August little. The total seasonal yields were highest in the second and the third year of harvesting, up to 10 t DM ha-1. In the winter 1997-1998 , winter damages killed 21 to 38 % of lucerne plants, and resulted …
Role Of White Clover In The Improvement Of Economical Efficiency Of Feeds From Grasslands, P. Goliñski
Role Of White Clover In The Improvement Of Economical Efficiency Of Feeds From Grasslands, P. Goliñski
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The aim of the research was to analyse the role played by white clover in the improvement of economical efficiency of feeds obtained from permanent grasslands. The influence of the proportion of white clover in the pasture sward on unit production costs of yield, energy and crude protein and the profit threshold in milk production was analysed taking into account three white clover cultivars, nitrogen fertilisation, irrigation and overdrilling. The investigation procedures employed the author’s own calculation models elaborated in optimisation programs based on production conditions found in dairy farms in the region of Wielkopolska. It was proved that the …
Solar Energetic Particles And Galactic Cosmic Rays, Connor Smith, Samuel Lutzel
Solar Energetic Particles And Galactic Cosmic Rays, Connor Smith, Samuel Lutzel
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Ionizing radiation is harmful to biological organisms and technological systems. In space, this radiation can have both solar and galactic origins. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) include protons, electrons, and HZE ions. HZE stands for High(H), atomic number (Z), and Energy (E). HZE ions are also components of the Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and are the most harmful type of radiation that astronauts face. The goal of this project is to study the number density of each component of the SEPs and GCRs during different phases of the solar cycle. In other words, what are the fluxes of electrons and HZE …
Understanding The Electrophysiological Changes In Microgravity And Radiation Exposed Bacteria Using Dielectrophoresis And Impedance Methods, John J. Veracka
Understanding The Electrophysiological Changes In Microgravity And Radiation Exposed Bacteria Using Dielectrophoresis And Impedance Methods, John J. Veracka
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Radiation and Microgravity are extreme space conditions where certain micro-organisms have been able to survive. These conditions can cause the up-regulation of radiation-induced DNA repair processes due to the production of reactive oxidative species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). The proposed project seeks to understand the changes in the electrophysiological properties, such as permittivity and conductivity of the cell membrane, on the internal components of the model bacteria E. coli K-12, by utilizing techniques known as impedance methods and Dielectrophoresis (DEP). The DEP force will be produced by an optimum Alternating current (AC) voltage and a given frequency passing …
Effects Of Microgravity On Mutualistic Bacteria, Mitchell K. Villafania
Effects Of Microgravity On Mutualistic Bacteria, Mitchell K. Villafania
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Changes in environmental conditions represent a challenge for all terrestrial organisms, including the organisms involved in mutualistic associations (when both organisms obtain a benefit from each other). Changes in environment might include fluctuations in in gravity and microgravity which represents a new frontier for space biology research. In this study we utilized Vibrio fischeri, a beneficial symbiotic bacterium of squids and monocentrid fishes. First, Vibrio fischeri was grown under gravity and microgravity conditions using a 2D clinostat design, after 24 and 48 hours of growth, we examined crucial phenotypic changes that might affect bacterial physiology and phenotypic changes involved in …

Biology Research Experience At The Erau’S Space Microbiology Laboratory, Erik Larsen, Bailey Burden, Jakob Robertson, Hugo Castillo
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The Aerospace Physiology program has created opportunities for students to not only get an education on the biological effects of flight and space, but also to be trained in advanced research techniques using state-of-the-art equipment. The Space Microbiology Lab studies how “space” conditions regulate microbial physiology and gene expression using microgravity analogs and low activity radiation sources to simulate what space might feel like for bacteria that inhabit spacecraft components and humans. We have performed several experiments with Escherichia coli, Arthrospira platensis, Candida albicans, and Candida parasilopsis (isolated from a space station module and provided to the lab by NASA) …
Biological Validation Of A Microgravity Analog For Bacteria And Cell Cultures, Collin R. Topolski, Hugo Castillo, Eduardo Divo
Biological Validation Of A Microgravity Analog For Bacteria And Cell Cultures, Collin R. Topolski, Hugo Castillo, Eduardo Divo
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
With the future of long duration spaceflight missions looking to expand from the International Space Station (ISS) to deep space, it must be ensured that all critical systems, living and non-living, are thoroughly developed before humans begin the extended voyage. As we continue to unravel the effects of microgravity on cells, more questions arise on the molecular and cellular components and processes that sense and react to lowered gravity conditions. We have developed a microgravity analog that could simulate the effects of reduced gravity on cells and that could be maintained for a period of time long enough to observe …

The Use Of Cafeteria Trials For The Selection Of Desmodium Ovalifolium Genotypes, Axel Schmidt, R. Schultze-Kraft, B. L. Maass, C. E. Lascano
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
For the selection of tropical legumes which contain anti-nutritive components such as tannins, relative acceptability of genotypes to ruminants is of particular importance, since these plant components may influence selective grazing behaviour and subsequent animal productivity. Plant-animal interactions are not predictable from laboratory analyses. Involving grazing animals through the conduction of relative-acceptability (=cafeteria) trials at early stages of the germplasm selection process might therefore provide a convenient tool to adjust and confirm genotype selection based on laboratory quality analyses data. As part of a multilocational germplasm evaluation project, cafeteria-experiments were conducted at two contrasting environments in Colombia with a core …
