Abstract Background Today, cosmetic products are very popular with both men and women to improve their appearance and increase their social acceptability. Results In this study, nano-sized (30–300 nm) plastic particles were isolated from the commercial face-scrubs and treated on the human keratinocytes. The observed adherence of polyethylene nano-plastics (PENPs), polystyrene NPs (PSNPs), and face-scrubs isolated nano-plastics (NPs) on the keratin layer reveals a significant attachment of NPs from the cosmetics that are applied on the skin for a short duration. This attachment property could facilitate further adherence of protein molecules on NPs and the protein-corona formation. The protein-corona mimics …

This review provides a critical, multi-faceted assessment of the practical contribution tidal stream energy can make to the UK and British Channel Islands future energy mix. Evidence is presented that broadly supports the latest national-scale practical resource estimate, of 34 TWh/year, equivalent to 11% of the UK’s current annual electricity demand. The size of the practical resource depends in part on the economic competitiveness of projects. In the UK, 124 MW of prospective tidal stream capacity is currently eligible to bid for subsidy support (MeyGen 1C, 80 MW; PTEC, 30 MW; and Morlais, 14 MW). It is estimated that the …

Trait Evaluations Of Faces And Voices: Comparing Within- And Between-Person Variability, Nadine Lavan, Mila Mileva, Andrew W. Young, A. Mike Burton, Carolyn Mcgettigan

School of Psychology

Human faces and voices are rich sources of information that can vary in many different ways. Most of the literature on face/voice perception has focused on understanding how people look and sound different to each other (between-person variability). However, recent studies highlight the ways in which the same person can look and sound different on different occasions (within-person variability). Across three experiments, we examined how within- and between-person variability relate to one another for social trait impressions by collecting trait ratings attributed to multiple face images and voice recordings of the same people. We find that within-person variability in social …

Talin (TLN1) is a mechanosensitive component of adhesion complexes that directly couples integrins to the actin cytoskeleton. In response to force, talin undergoes switch-like behavior of its multiple rod domains that modulate interactions with its binding partners. Cyclin-dependent kinase-1 (CDK1) is a key regulator of the cell cycle, exerting its effects through synchronized phosphorylation of a large number of protein targets. CDK1 activity maintains adhesion during interphase, and its inhibition is a prerequisite for the tightly choreographed changes in cell shape and adhesion that are required for successful mitosis. Using a combination of biochemical, structural, and cell biological approaches, we …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Improved understanding of how our coasts will evolve over a range of time scales (years-decades) is critical for effective and sustainable management of coastal infrastructure. A robust knowledge of the spatial, directional and temporal variability of the inshore wave climate is required to predict future coastal evolution and hence vulnerability. However, the variability of the inshore directional wave climate has received little attention, and an improved understanding could drive development of skillful seasonal or decadal forecasts of coastal response. We examine inshore wave climate at 63 locations throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland (1980–2017) and show that 73% are directionally …

A Rules-Based Shoreface Translation And Sediment Budgeting Tool For Estimating Coastal Change: Shoretrans, R. Jak Mccarroll, Gerd Masselink, Nieves G. Valiente, Timothy Scott, Mark Wiggins, Josie Alice Kirby, Mark Davidson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Predicting change to shorelines globally presents an increasing challenge as sea level rise (SLR) accelerates. Many shoreline prediction models use the simplistic ‘Bruun rule’ for dealing with SLR profile translation, in-part due to alternative approaches being too complex and time-consuming to implement. To address this, we introduce ShoreTrans: a simple, rules-based, user-input driven, shoreface translation and sediment budgeting model, that applies the surveyed 2D-profile (not a parameterization), for estimating change to realistic coastlines, resulting from SLR and variations in sediment supply, while accounting for armouring, hard-rock cliffs and outcropping rocks. The tool can be applied to sand, gravel, rock and …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Manipulation of the LED illumination spectrum can enhance plant growth rate and development in grow tents. We report on the identification of the illumination spectrum required to significantly enhance the growth rate of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) plants in grow tent environments by controlling the LED wavebands illuminating the plants. Since the optimal illumination spectrum depends on the plant type, this work focuses on identifying the illumination spectrum that achieves significant basil biomass improvement compared to improvements reported in prior studies. To be able to optimize the illumination spectrum, several …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

We have previously shown higher intake of cruciferous vegetables is inversely associated with carotid artery intima-media thickness. To further test the hypothesis that an increased consumption of cruciferous vegetables is associated with reduced indicators of structural vascular disease in other areas of the vascular tree, we aimed to investigate the cross-sectional association between cruciferous vegetable intake and extensive calcification in the abdominal aorta. Dietary intake was assessed, using a food frequency questionnaire, in 684 older women from the Calcium Intake Fracture Outcome Study. Cruciferous vegetables included cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli. Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) was scored using the …

Ocean Acidification And Carbon Limitation Affect Photosynthetic Capacity Of The Seagrass (Amphibolis Antarctica) And Its Calcifying Epiphytes, Daniel Grove

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Amphibolis antarctica seagrass meadows, and their associated calcifying epiphytes, are abundant on Australia’s west coast, but have declined in recent years due to anthropogenic factors such as marine heatwaves, damaging fishing practices and increased turbidity resulting from eutrophication which causes light limitation. Burning fossil fuels has increased the flux of CO2 in to the ocean, lowering surface seawater pH, and making more carbon available for photosynthetic life. There are benefits of increasing CO2 for those seagrasses that are carbon limited, as this alleviates their energetic use of carbon concentrating mechanisms (CCM’S) which are less efficient, and more energy costly than …

Preliminary Development Of A Questionnaire To Measure The Extra-Pulmonary Symptoms Of Severe Asthma, Felice G De, Michael E. Hyland, Joseph W. Lanario, Yuri Antonacci, Rupert C. Jones, Matthew Masoli

School of Psychology

Abstract Background Research into the effects of asthma treatments on the extra-pulmonary symptoms of severe asthma is limited by the absence of a suitable questionnaire. The aim was to create a questionnaire suitable for intervention studies by selecting symptoms that are statistically associated with asthma pathology and therefore may improve when pathology is reduced. Methods Patients attending a specialist asthma clinic completed the 65-item General Symptom Questionnaire (GSQ-65), a questionnaire validated for assessing symptoms of people with multiple medically unexplained symptoms. Lung function (FEV1%) and cumulative oral corticosteroids (OCS) calculated from maintenance dose plus exacerbations were obtained from clinic records. …

Ecotoxicology Of Active Ingredients In Changing Marine Environments, Cameron Hird Jan 2021

Ecotoxicology Of Active Ingredients In Changing Marine Environments, Cameron Hird

School of Biomedical Sciences

Active ingredients (AIs), including pesticides and pharmaceuticals, are designed to have a specific mode-of-action (MoA) in target organisms. Despite this, there is substantial evidence of their occurrence in marine environments having the potential to impact non-target species with effects both as a result of, and independent from, their MoA. Furthermore, due to a large proportion of AIs being readily ionisable, there is growing evidence that their uptake and effects are sensitive to environmental parameters such as pH, which can be driven by changes in pCO2,both in natural cycles and as a consequence of anthropogenic activities. In this thesis I investigate the …

The COVID-19 pandemic created new challenges for children including access to education and limiting social and emotional connections to extended family, friends, and the community. Globally, opportunities for sharing children’s self-reported experiences during lockdown were limited. The primary aim of this project was to create an art-E-Book that reflects children’s experiences of life during the COVID-19 pandemic that could be shared with other children around the world. Secondly, we wanted to reflect on the consultation undertaken within the International Network of Child and Family Centered Care (INCFCC) using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle framework. Children from around the world were invited …

An Investigation Into The Social Interaction And Demonstration Of Preference For Location Of Cows In A Commercial Dairy Herd., Joanne Vincent Jan 2021

An Investigation Into The Social Interaction And Demonstration Of Preference For Location Of Cows In A Commercial Dairy Herd., Joanne Vincent

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Under free-ranging conditions cattle live in social groups because it is beneficial to them in terms of risk of predation, breeding synchronisation and collective intelligence, amongst others. However, current dairy cattle management practice is not geared toward management of the cow for her social wellbeing but rather for the ability to feed and manage appropriately and meet the cows’ main needs that affect productivity and profitability. Domestic dairy cattle do not have free ranging opportunities. Heifers are managed in cohort groups from birth to calving and have little, if any, interaction with the adult herd until they calve. This study …
