Identification Of New Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (Afff), Venus Rivera Larson

Theses and Dissertations

The extraordinary number of unknown per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) necessitates identifying the substances as a first step to understanding them and their risks. From an environmental engineering perspective (preventing, controlling, and remediating), PFAS remediation and control measures are only as effective as the tools used to detect them. Focusing on aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), several researchers have elucidated the structures of unknown PFAS, with each study accomplishing PFAS identification differently. A range of software and practices were used to improve mass spectrometry (MS) results or elucidate chemical structures. Different identification approaches were compared in the current research, including suspected …

An Evaluation Of Ci Asteroid Regolith As A Plant Growth Medium For Space Crop Production, Steven Jon Russell Jan 2021

An Evaluation Of Ci Asteroid Regolith As A Plant Growth Medium For Space Crop Production, Steven Jon Russell

Theses and Dissertations

Asteroids are small, undifferentiated bodies that materialized during the formation epoch of the solar system. With a concerted effort to establish a long-term presence in space, crewed missions to asteroids should not be ignored. A critical aspect of human missions is self-sustainability, primarily growing crops via in-situ resource utilization. CI carbonaceous asteroids are a primitive type of asteroid that retain elements found during that early solar system formation. More importantly, the regolith on these asteroids contains soluble elemental nutrients, such as phosphorous and potassium, that crops can use for growth and development. This thesis focuses on the ability of CI …

The Role Of Infrequently Mobile Boulders In Modulating Landscape Evolution And Geomorphic Hazards, Charles M. Shobe, Jens M. Turowski, Ron Nativ, Rachel C. Glade, Georgina L. Bennett, Benedetta Dini

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A landscape’s sediment grain size distribution is the product of, and an important influence on, earth surface processes and landscape evolution. Grains can be large enough that the motion of a single grain, infrequently mobile in size-selective transport systems, constitutes or triggers significant geomorphic change. We define these grains as boulders. Boulders affect landscape evolution; their dynamics and effects on landscape form have been the focus of substantial recent community effort. We review progress on five key questions related to how boulders influence the evolution of unglaciated, eroding landscapes: 1) What factors control boulder production on eroding hillslopes and the …

The Creature In The Looking Glass: Miltonic Marriage And The Female Self In Breaking Dawn, Jay Wright

Undergraduate Research Awards

Near the close of Breaking Dawn, the final installment of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga, Edward asks his new wife Bella a question. “When will you ever see yourself clearly?” (Dawn 744). Bella has no answer for him. Edward's question and, more importantly, Bella's apparent inability to answer is symptomatic of a broader issue throughout Breaking Dawn, in which, even as Bella obtains all that she has desired, her sense of self begins to fracture. Breaking Dawn formalizes Bella’s union with Edward through a series of increasingly binding steps: first through legal marriage, then sexual intimacy and pregnancy, then through vampiric …

The Impact Of Patriarchy On Stud Lesbians, Meilin Miller

Undergraduate Research Awards

Intersectional feminism informed how literary scholar bell hooks understands and interacts with the world. As a result, feminism is deeply intertwined in all of her commentaries and sociocultural analyses. In her 2003 book We Real Cool: Black Men and Masculinity, hooks writes about how male masculinity and blackness interact with each other in this society. Her proclivity towards feminism isn’t restrained. A majority of the book is dedicated to understanding how toxic patriarchy has victimized and empowered black men, specifically seeking to examine their relationship with black women. However, black masculinity in women is an area that hooks does …

The last twenty years have brought antitrust back to the fore as a political issue of greater salience. Several booms and busts in the economy have highlighted the issue of corporate power in the economy and the political system. The growing influence and aggressiveness of the European Union and other jurisdictions' competition laws have highlighted the relative retreat in the United States. Political movements in the United States have brought issues of corporate power and its abuse back into the public limelight and with them a greater political salience for antitrust in the election cycle of 2020.

Legal Opacity: Artificial Intelligence’S Sticky Wicket, Charlotte A. Tschider Jan 2021

Legal Opacity: Artificial Intelligence’S Sticky Wicket, Charlotte A. Tschider

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Proponents of artificial intelligence (“AI”) transparency have carefully illustrated the many ways in which transparency may be beneficial to prevent safety and unfairness issues, to promote innovation, and to effectively provide recovery or support due process in lawsuits. However, impediments to transparency goals, described as opacity, or the “black-box” nature of AI, present significant issues for promoting these goals.

An undertheorized perspective on opacity is legal opacity, where competitive, and often discretionary legal choices, coupled with regulatory barriers create opacity. Although legal opacity does not specifically affect AI only, the combination of technical opacity in AI systems with legal opacity …

Assessment Of Sex Differences In Basic Renal Mitochondrial Bioenergetics, Morgan J. Spicer Jan 2021

Assessment Of Sex Differences In Basic Renal Mitochondrial Bioenergetics, Morgan J. Spicer

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Kidney diseases are closely linked with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Furthermore, it is established that sex plays an important role in the onset, development and severity of renal diseases. Recently, it has been revealed that sex hormones are implicated in mitochondrial bioenergetics. Despite information accumulated regarding the role of mitochondria in renal disease states, little is known about the bioenergetics of renal mitochondria in normal physiology, and no studies looked at sex differences pre-disease onset. We hypothesized that there are sex-related differences in renal mitochondrial bioenergetics in young, healthy rats. To test this hypothesis, we utilized renal tissue …
