Phylogenetic Placement Of Seven Strains Of Synechococcales (Cyanobacteria) Isolated From Desert Soils In Zion National Park., Kevin Houk Jan 2021

Phylogenetic Placement Of Seven Strains Of Synechococcales (Cyanobacteria) Isolated From Desert Soils In Zion National Park., Kevin Houk

Senior Honors Projects

Seven strains of cyanobacteria of the order Synechococcales were isolated from the sandstone derived soil of Zion National Park. These strains were analyzed using 16S rRNA and 16S-23S phylogenetic analysis, percent dissimilarity of the ITS sequence, morphology, and the similarity of the 16S rRNA sequence. One strain was placed within the genus Plectolyngbya, but the Bayesian inference and 16S rRNA similarity analysis support the conclusion that Plectolyngbya should not considered a valid genus, and that it should be integrated into the taxonomically prioritized Leptolybya. Two of the strains were found to be similar to Phormidesmus morphologically, but the …

Paternal Ages And Genetic Diseases And Congenital Anomalies, Neda Hamood Jan 2021

Paternal Ages And Genetic Diseases And Congenital Anomalies, Neda Hamood

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the link between advanced paternal ages (APA) (i.e., APA ≥ 35 years and APA ≥ 50 years) and genetic diseases and congenital anomalies. Currently, the relationship between both advanced paternal ages and genetic diseases and congenital anomalies remains unclear. However, there is room for improvement to systematically investigate the relationship between specific congenital anomalies in newborns and advanced paternal ages. More recently, the link between advanced paternal age (as opposed to existing studies analyzing advanced maternal age alone) and genetic diseases has been recognized by researchers, epidemiologists, and various health experts. Thus, …

Gypsum-Exclusive Plants Accumulate More Leaf S Than Non-Exclusive Species Both In And Off Gypsum, Andreu Cera, Gabriel Montserrat-Martí, Juan Pedro Ferrio, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Sara Palacio Jan 2021

Gypsum-Exclusive Plants Accumulate More Leaf S Than Non-Exclusive Species Both In And Off Gypsum, Andreu Cera, Gabriel Montserrat-Martí, Juan Pedro Ferrio, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Sara Palacio

2021 Faculty Bibliography

Gypsum-exclusive species (gypsophiles), are restricted to gypseous soils in natural environments. However, it is unclear why gypsophiles display greater affinity to gyspeous soils than other soils. These plants are edaphic endemics, growing in alkaline soils with high Ca and S. Gypsophiles tend to show higher foliar Ca and S, lower K and, sometimes, higher Mg than non-exclusive gypsum species, named gypsovags. Our aim was to test if the unique leaf elemental signature of gypsophiles could be the result of special nutritional requirements linked to their specificity to gypseous soils. These nutritional requirements could hamper the completion of their life cycle …

The Epistemic Parity Of Religious Apologetic And Religion Debunking Responses To The Cognitive Science Of Religion, Walter Scott Stepanenko Jan 2021

The Epistemic Parity Of Religious Apologetic And Religion Debunking Responses To The Cognitive Science Of Religion, Walter Scott Stepanenko

2021 Faculty Bibliography

Recent work in the cognitive science of religion has challenged some of the explanatory assumptions of previous research in the field. Nonetheless, some of the practitioners of the new cognitive science of religion theorize in the same skeptical spirit as their predecessors and either imply or explicitly claim that their projects undermine the warrant of religious beliefs. In this article, I argue that these theories do no additional argumentative work when compared to previous attempts to debunk religious belief and that these recent debunking efforts are very much motivated by methodological commitments that are shared with canonical research. I contend …

Repeatability Of Foraging Behavior Following A Simulated Predation Attempt Depends On Color Morph, Sex, And Foraging Metric In Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus), Brian P. Waldron*, Marissa C. Ganzfried*, Cari-Ann M. Hickerson, Carl D. Anthony Jan 2021

Repeatability Of Foraging Behavior Following A Simulated Predation Attempt Depends On Color Morph, Sex, And Foraging Metric In Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus), Brian P. Waldron*, Marissa C. Ganzfried*, Cari-Ann M. Hickerson, Carl D. Anthony

2021 Faculty Bibliography

Behavioral repeatability greatly affects the capacity of an individual to respond to varying environments. When multiple behaviors within individuals are repeatable and correlated across time or across contexts, it is termed a behavioral syndrome. However, not all behaviors exhibit the same level of repeatability, and relatively few studies have examined repeatability in amphibians. We examined the repeatability of foraging behavior in the Eastern Red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus), a color-polymorphic terrestrial salamander, following a simulated predation attempt. We tested several hypotheses: (1) Simulated predation would negatively affect foraging, increasing latency to feed and decreasing the number of prey items eaten in …

New Piperidine Alkaloids From Fire Ants Are Not Sequestered By The Green And Black Poison Frog ( Dendrobates Auratus ), Ian Davison, Ralph Saporito, Lisa M. Shulte, Kyle Summers

2021 Faculty Bibliography

Neotropical poison frogs possess alkaloid-based antipredator defenses which they sequester from a diet of arthropods such as oribatid mites and myrmicine ants. Alkaloid sequestration is still poorly understood and although several studies have examined its uptake, most experiments directly feed alkaloids to the frogs. Here, we examined the alkaloid uptake system in the poison frog species Dendrobates auratus by feeding it an alkaloid-containing prey item, the red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta (Formicidae, Myrmicinae). Captive bred frogs were either fed live ants or fruit flies dusted with powdered ants for 4 months. Using GC–MS, we confirm that S. invicta contain …

2021 Faculty Bibliography

The total synthesis of two decahydroquinoline poison frog alkaloids ent-cis-195A and cis-211A were achieved in 16 steps (38% overall yield) and 19 steps (31% overall yield), respectively, starting from known compound 1. Both alkaloids were synthesized from the common key intermediate 11 in a divergent fashion, and the absolute stereochemistry of natural cis-211A was determined to be 2R, 4aR, 5R, 6S, and 8aS. Interestingly, the absolute configuration of the parent decahydroquinoline nuclei of cis-211A was the mirror image of that of cis-195A, although both alkaloids were isolated from the same poison frog species, Oophaga (Dendrobates) pumilio, from Panama.

Analyzing Single Ion Channel Activity In A Lipid Bilayer, David Ruiter, Loren Haarsma Jan 2021

Analyzing Single Ion Channel Activity In A Lipid Bilayer, David Ruiter, Loren Haarsma

Summer Research

Bilayers of lipid molecules form the basis of the cell membranes in living organisms. An ion channel is a type of molecule that can temporarily open a channel in a lipid bilayer in order to allow specific ions in and out. Problems with ion channels and their interactions with lipid bilayers are associated with several diseases, including osteoporosis. Carefully controlling the type of lipid in the bilayer, and its temperature, gives us tools to study the basic biophysics of these systems

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is generally thought to spare primary sensory function; however, such interpretations have drawn from a literature that has rarely taken into account the variable cognitive declines seen in patients with AD. As these cognitive domains are now known to modulate cortical somato-sensory processing, it remains possible that abnormalities in somatosensory function in patients with AD have been suppressed by neuropsychological variability in previous research. Methods: In this study, we combine magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain imaging during a paired-pulse somatosensory gating task with an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests to investigate the influence of cognitive variability on estimated …

Plasma Membrane Fluidity: An Environment Thermal Detector In Plants, Dora L. Cano-Ramirez, Laura Carmona-Salazar, Francisco Morales-Cedillo, Jorge Ramírez-Salcedo, Edgar B. Cahoon, Marina Gavilanes-Ruíz

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The lipid matrix in cell membranes is a dynamic, bidimensional array of amphipathic molecules exhibiting mesomorphism, which contributes to the membrane fluidity changes in response to temperature fluctuation. As sessile organisms, plants must rapidly and accurately respond to environmental thermal variations. However, mechanisms underlying temperature perception in plants are poorly understood. We studied the thermal plasticity of membrane fluidity using three fluorescent probes across a temperature range of -5 to 41 °C in isolated microsomal fraction (MF), vacuolar membrane (VM), and plasma membrane (PM) vesicles from Arabidopsis plants. Results showed that PM were highly fluid and exhibited more phase transitions …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Aragoa, comprising 19 high-altitude North Andean species, is one of three genera in the Plantagineae (Plantaginaceae, Lamiales), along with Littorella and Plantago. Based primarily on plastid data and nuclear ITS, Aragoa is sister to a clade of Littorella + Plantago, but Plantagineae relationships have yet to be assessed using multigene datasets from the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. Here, complete mitogenomes were assembled for two species of Aragoa (A. abietina and A. cleefii). The mitogenomes of both species have a typical suite of genes for 34 proteins, 17 tRNAs, and three rRNAs. The A. abietina mitogenome …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Background: Biological mutagens (such as transposon) with sequences inserted, play a crucial role to link observed phenotype and genotype in reverse genetic studies. For this reason, accurate and efficient software tools for identifying insertion sites based on the analysis of sequencing reads are desired. Results: We developed a bioinformatics tool, a Finder, to identify genome-wide Insertions in Mutagenesis (named as “InMut-Finder”), based on target sequences and flanking sequences from long reads, such as Oxford Nanopore Sequencing. InMut-Finder succeeded in identify > 100 insertion sites in Medicago truncatula and soybean mutants based on sequencing reads of whole-genome DNA or enriched …

Selection for yield at high planting density has reshaped the leaf canopy of maize, improving photosynthetic productivity in high density settings. Further optimization of canopy architecture may be possible. However, measuring leaf angles, the widely studied component trait of leaf canopy architecture, by hand is a labor and time intensive process. Here, we use multiple, calibrated, 2D images to reconstruct the 3D geometry of individual sorghum plants using a voxel carving based algorithm. Automatic skeletonization and segmentation of these 3D geometries enable quan- tification of the angle of each leaf for each plant. The resulting measurements are both heritable and …

Background: Grapevine reproductive development has direct implications on yield. It also impacts on berry and wine quality by affecting traits like seedlessness, berry and bunch size, cluster compactness and berry skin to pulp ratio. Seasonal fluctuations in yield, fruit composition and wine attributes, which are largely driven by climatic factors, are major challenges for worldwide table grape and wine industry. Accordingly, a better understanding of reproductive processes such as gamete development, fertilization, seed and fruit set is of paramount relevance for managing yield and quality. With the aim of providing new insights into this field, we searched for clones with …

The Role Of The Zealous Advocate: Implementing Lgbtqia+-Conscious Ethics In Juvenile Criminal Defense To Combat The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Mia Tyminski Jan 2021

The Role Of The Zealous Advocate: Implementing Lgbtqia+-Conscious Ethics In Juvenile Criminal Defense To Combat The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Mia Tyminski

Hofstra Law Student Works

The criminal legal system is no stranger to the concept of race-conscious ethics.2 However, discussions surrounding other conscious-based ethics in our criminal legal system are scarce. Conscious-based ethics explore the need to understand the hardships a specific group undergoes without blinding oneself to the characteristics of the group. Conscious-based ethics seek out methods that reflect the historical significance and identities of specific groups.

There is a need for LGBTQIA+-conscious practices in the criminal legal system, especially within the juvenile criminal legal system. Youth that identify within the LGBTQIA+ community are more likely to engage with the criminal legal system …
