Communicating Positive Hpv Test Results: A Directed Content Analysis Of Women's Preferences Using Self-Determination Theory, Susanna Foxworthy Scott, Katharine J. Head, Nicole L. Johnson, Kaitlyn Kruer, Gregory D. Zimet
Iowa Journal of Communication
Changes in cervical cancer screening guidelines and persistent disparities indicate a need to identify communication preferences for receiving a positive HPV test result to ensure appropriate follow-up care. We conducted a directed content analysis guided by the tenets of self-determination theory of 575 written responses derived from a national sample of women > 18 in the United States. Biologically female women responded to a prompt about communication preferences for a positive HPV test result. Pearson chi-square analyses were conducted to discover differences in communication preferences. Individuals with health insurance (p = 0.044), those with >$29,999 in annual household income (p = …
Synthetic Pathways For Potential Platinum 1,10-Phenanthroline Compounds, Jacob Young
Synthetic Pathways For Potential Platinum 1,10-Phenanthroline Compounds, Jacob Young
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
There are extremely important uses for platinum when it comes to the treatment of cancers and dementias. One potential therapeutic combines platinum with a structure known as phenanthroline. This platinum phenanthroline structure is normally extremely water-insoluble, rendering it difficult to study and use in biological systems. The Williams’ Biochemistry Laboratory endeavored to find a simpler synthetic pathway for a water-soluble phenanthroline product. While unsuccessful in identifying a product as of yet, many synthetic pathways have been ruled out, and more hypothetical pathways are being formulated for testing.
Among the strategies analyzed are varying solvent, reagents, apparatus, methodology, and temperature in …
Degradation Of Natural And Synthetic Fibers In Various Aqueous Environments, Jaylin Bryant
Degradation Of Natural And Synthetic Fibers In Various Aqueous Environments, Jaylin Bryant
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
Fabrics are one variant of polymers, macromolecules that form the foundation of our society. They consist of small subunits called monomers, which are covalently bonded together and layered over each other through intermolecular attractions. There are natural fabrics, such as cotton and silk, and synthetic fabrics like polyester and rayon. Scientists in forensic taphonomy study postmortem changes made to human remains, which can also include clothes found at the scene. In this study, the degradation rates of four white fabrics (cotton, polyester, rayon, and silk) were observed in various aqueous environments (pure, chlorinated, sea, and lake) in order to observe …

Modelling The Transition From Homogeneous To Columnar States In Locust Hopper Bands, Miguel Velez
Modelling The Transition From Homogeneous To Columnar States In Locust Hopper Bands, Miguel Velez
HMC Senior Theses
Many biological systems form structured swarms, for instance in locusts, whose swarms are known as hopper bands. There is growing interest in applying mathematical models to understand the emergence and dynamics of these biological and social systems. We model the locusts of a hopper band as point particles interacting through repulsive and attractive social "forces" on a one dimensional periodic domain. The primary goal of this work is to modify this well studied modelling framework to be more biological by restricting repulsion to act locally between near neighbors, while attraction acts globally between all individuals. This is a biologically motivated …

Isolation And Characterization Of Pythium Spp. From South Dakota Soils Under Commerical Alfalfa Production, Jennifer M. Giles, Andrew E. Sathoff
External Research Posters
Alfalfa is a significant crop in South Dakota that provides many different benefits for its growers. South Dakota plants the most acres of alfalfa in the United States. It is used as a protein protein-rich feed for livestock, a cover crop that protects against soil erosion, and a natural fertilizer because of its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. However, alfalfa seedlings are susceptible to many diseases. Pythium root and seed rot is one disease known to have devastating effects on alfalfa field establishment and yield. Pythium species are oomycete pathogens that inhabit the soil and remain present and …
The Role Of Perceived Social Support As A Mediator In The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma And Social Anxiety, Katharine E. Musella
The Role Of Perceived Social Support As A Mediator In The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma And Social Anxiety, Katharine E. Musella
Open Access Master's Theses
Traumatic childhood experiences (physical abuse and neglect, emotional abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse) have increasingly high incidence rates and can be predictive of negative health outcomes, such as social anxiety. Although the relationship between childhood trauma and social anxiety has been documented, additional research is necessary to understand the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The current study hypothesized that social support, the experience of being valued, respected, cared about and loved by individuals present in a person’s life, would mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and social anxiety in a sample of college students (n= 221). Furthermore, it …
The Role Of Maternal Education And Child Gender On Children’S Fine Motor Skill Development, Beatrix Anne Lavigueur
The Role Of Maternal Education And Child Gender On Children’S Fine Motor Skill Development, Beatrix Anne Lavigueur
Open Access Master's Theses
Maternal education has been found to be a proximal measure of household income and has been directly linked to a child’s cognitive, social, and academic outcomes (Augustine et al., 2009; Harding, 2015; Kalil et al., 2012). Additionally, several studies examining children’s development found that children’s fine motor skills are the skillset that have a higher likelihood of experiencing delays when correlated with household socioeconomic status (Doulabi et al., 2017). The present study examined the relationship between children’s fine motor skills and maternal education and contributes to the literature in that it strictly examined a low-income sample population. The first wave …

Enhancement And Benchmarking Of The Prescribed Material Redistribution Topology Optimization Scheme, Tjard Bätge
Open Access Master's Theses
A rising demand for lightweight structures and the advance of additive manufacturing led to an increased importance of topology optimization tools and research. One developed scheme is the “Prescribed Material Redistribution" (PMR) method, which heuristically solves minimum compliance problems under a single volume constraint.
This method has not yet been fully evaluated and benchmarked. In this research, the current standalone PMR code is enhanced by using the commercial finite element software Abaqus to improve performance as well as ease of use. The novel code is then validated for 2D and 3D cases. Subsequently, a benchmark is conducted to compare the …

An Experimental Study Investigating The Impact Of Miscible And Immiscible Nitrogen Injection On Asphaltene Instability In Nano Shale Pore Structure, Mukhtar Elturki, Abdulmohsin Imqam
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Miscible gas injection has become the most used enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method in the oil and gas industry. The deposition and precipitation of asphaltene during the gas injection process is one of the problems during the oil production process. The asphaltene can deposit and plug the pores, which reduces the permeability in a reservoir; thus, decreasing the oil recovery and increasing the production costs. This research investigates the nitrogen (N2) miscible and immiscible pressure injections on asphaltene instability in shale pore structures. First, a slim tube was used to determine the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of N2 to ensure …

The Research Patent, Sean B. Seymore
The Research Patent, Sean B. Seymore
Vanderbilt Law Review
The patent system gives courts the discretion to tailor patentability standards flexibly across technologies to provide optimal incentives for innovation. For chemical inventions, the courts deem them unpatentable if the chemical lacks a practical, non-research-based use at the time patent protection is sought. The fear is that an early-stage patent on a research input would confer too much control over yet-unknown uses for the chemical, thereby potentially hindering downstream innovation. Yet, denying patents on research inputs can frustrate patent law’s broad goal of protecting and promoting scientific and technological advances.
This Article addresses this problem by proposing a new form …

Multiple studies have shown that gene expression changes occur in sensory neurons after peripheral nerve injury (PNI). These expression changes include many genes that are turned on specifically in response to injury, but much less is know about expression changes in stable genetic markers of particular sensory neuron populations. This study characterized the expression of three markers of proprioceptive neurons Inhbb, Heatr5a, Cyp2s1 in lumbar dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in intact animals and after PNI. To perform these experiments, we subcloned segments of the coding sequences of these genes and generated DIG-labeled riboprobes. Control experiments demonstrated the validity of …
