Uncertain Risk, Science Experiments, And The Courts, Eric E. Johnson
Uncertain Risk, Science Experiments, And The Courts, Eric E. Johnson
Florida State University Law Review
Legal scholarship has looked at problems of uncertainty- "unknown unknowns"-in a variety of contexts, from financial regulation to national security. This Article, however, focuses on uncertain risk in what may be its most challenging arena: experimental scientific research. Notably, this context imposes a key conceptual hurdle. In other arenas, law and regulation can work to lessen uncertainty. But with science-experiment risk, uncertainty cannot be sidestepped, since going beyond the current state of human knowledge is the whole point of experimental research. Moreover, scienceexperiment risk involves the highest possible stakes, since future experiments could plausibly lead to global catastrophe, even human …

Background/aim: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease that leads to tissue stiffening secondary to lymphocyte infiltration of the thyroid gland. Gray-scale ultrasound (US) is widely used in its diagnosis. Numerous studies have been conducted comparing elastography findings of HT with tissue stiffness and immunoreactivity levels. This study aims to reveal the relationship between shear wave elastography (SWE) and Doppler parameters in patients with HT. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 45 patients diagnosed with HT, and 20 control patients without thyroid pathology. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and antithyroid peroxidase (TPO) values were examined in patients with HT. Thyroid …

Background/aim: Bone disease is one of the most prominent complications after kidney transplantation. Bone diseases include osteoporosis, persistent secondary hyperparathyroidism, and avascular necrosis (AVN). We investigated the relationship between the polymorphisms of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and bone diseases occurring after kidney transplantation. Materials and methods: The study consists of 234 kidney allograft recipients with a minimum follow-up of five years after kidney transplantation. Patients with glomerular filtration rates less than 30 mL/min/1.73m2 , a history of parathyroidectomy, bisphosphonate use pre- or post-transplantation, and cinacalcet use posttransplantation excluded. We evaluated associations between the polymorphisms of the VDR gene …

Background/aim: In the present study we aimed to figure out the effect of metformin on the expression of AMPK-alpha, cyclin D1, and Tp53, and apoptosis in primary breast cancer cells (PBCCs). Materials and methods: PBCCs were treated with two doses of metformin (0 mM, 25 mM). Proliferation was determined by BrdU assay. Real-time PCR was used to assess AMPK-alpha, cyclin D1, and Tp53 gene expressions; apoptotic indexes of PBCCs were analyzed using flow-cytometry. Results: Twenty-four-hour incubation with 25 mM metformin reduced the proliferation of PBCCs. AMPK-alpha gene expression in PBCCs was not affected by 25 mM metformin treatment compared with …
