Background/aim: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors, a class of oral antidiabetic drugs, have been shown to be protective on the vascular system because of their antiinflammatory, antiatherosclerotic, and vasodilatory effects. ß2 -adrenoceptors (ß2 -ARs) mediate the vasorelaxation in the aorta. However, ß3 -adrenoceptor-mediated relaxation has not been studied in diabetic aorta yet. Thus, we aimed to study the effect of sitagliptin treatment on ß2 - and ß3 -adrenoceptor-mediated relaxations in the diabetic rat aorta. Materials and methods: Eight-week old Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups: control, diabetic, sitagliptin treated diabetic. Diabetes was induced by injection of streptozotocin (35 or …

The inference of neuronal connectome from large-scale neuronal activity recordings, such as two-photon Calcium imaging, represents an active area of research in computational neuroscience. In this work, we developed FARCI (Fast and Robust Connectome Inference), a MATLAB package for neuronal connectome inference from high-dimensional two-photon Calcium fluorescence data. We employed partial correlations as a measure of the functional association strength between pairs of neurons to reconstruct a neuronal connectome. We demonstrated using in silico datasets from the Neural Connectomics Challenge (NCC) and those generated using the state-of-the-art simulator of Neural Anatomy and Optimal Microscopy (NAOMi) that FARCI provides an accurate …

Adaptation of group A Streptococcus (GAS) to its human host is mediated by two-component systems that transduce external stimuli to regulate bacterial physiology. Among such systems, CsrRS (also known as CovRS) is the most extensively characterized for its role in regulating ∼10% of the GAS genome, including several virulence genes. Here, we show that extracellular magnesium and the human antimicrobial peptide LL-37 have opposing effects on the phosphorylation of the response regulator CsrR by the receptor kinase CsrS. Genetic inactivation of CsrS phosphatase or kinase activity, respectively, had similar but more pronounced effects on CsrR phosphorylation compared to growth in …

The objective of this study was to evaluate wool (Dorset and Rambouillet) and hair (Dorper, Katahdin, and White Dorper) breeds for their ability to complement Romanov germplasm in an annual fall lambing system by estimating direct maternal grandsire and sire breed effects on economically important lamb and ewe traits. After 3 yr of evaluation under spring lambing, ewes of the five F1 types were transitioned to spring mating, exposed to composite terminal sires, and evaluated under a barn lambing system at 4, 5, and 6 yr of age. A total of 527 first generation crossbred (F1) ewes produced 1,151 litters …

There is a lack of data to describe the range of environmental and air quality conditions in beef cattle confinement buildings with deep-pit manure storage. The objective of this article is to describe the environmental conditions, manure nutrient concentrations, and aerial gas concentrations for three deep-pit manure storage finishing beef cattle facilities and varying weather conditions. Measurements were collected from three barns finishing beef cattle with deep pits in Minnesota on three sampling days per barn in summer, fall, and spring weather conditions. The air temperatures throughout the barns closely mirrored the ambient temperature conditions, although significantly lower temperatures were …

Restorative Relationships And 'Radical Help': Reimagining Welfare-To-Work Beyond The Market-Family Divide, Lynn D. Lu
Publications and Research
The unprecedented global lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the extreme vulnerability of “essential” yet underpaid workers, the vast inequality between the wealthy and the less fortunate, and the bottomless pit facing those without a social safety net. While the crisis has laid bare the near-universality of human susceptibility to disease and unemployment in a world in which few can safely work, it has also highlighted the disproportionate precarity experienced by low-wage and contingent workers, people of color, and non-citizens. Well before the pandemic, rampant socioeconomic and racial inequality, high underemployment and concentration of wealth, and technological advances …

This paper describes the archaeology of one family’s tolerance to the stressors associated with the settlement of a new place. Artifacts associated with the maintenance of clothing suggest that a British family newly arrived at the Swan River colony in the southwest of Australia had the ability to remain composed during a period of reduced resources and psychological strain. The family’s ability to resist stress was probably the result of the social knowledge gained during previous experiences with internal migration in the British Isles during a time of high social dislocation.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can have devastating effects on aquatic ecosystems, economies, and communities. In general, their effects are also likely to worsen and become more frequent because of climate change. This paper will examine contemporary attempts to predict, prevent, monitor, control, and adapt to HABs.

Undergraduate Student Attitudes About Search Data Privacy In Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Research Study, Laura Gariepy
VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Purpose and goals
This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study on undergraduate students’ attitudes about search data privacy in academic libraries, and their preferences for how librarians should handle information about what they search for, borrow, and download. This is an important topic due to the increasingly data-driven nature of assessment in higher education, contrasted with libraries’ professional commitment to privacy which has historically limited the amount of data collected about student library use. Although the literature is rich with evidence of librarians’ commitment to user privacy, very few studies address user perspectives on this matter.

The Spread Of International Borders As A Prelude To The Spread Of International Borders During Covid-19, David E. Toohey
The Spread Of International Borders As A Prelude To The Spread Of International Borders During Covid-19, David E. Toohey
International Journal of Peace Studies
This article analyzes how Covid-19 has impacted borders and xenophobia. In particular, it looks at how four countries with generally right-wing politics, but not necessarily right-wing viewpoints, have used xenophobia to deal with Covid-19: The United States, Japan, Brazil, and Australia. This paper chronicles the expected rise in blaming other countries for the spread of Covid-19 with unexpected consequences. Rather than solidifying national borders and constituencies in the face of an international threat through xenophobia, right-wing countries have instead created a successful border creation process with little room to expand. The options seem to be a fragmentation of these countries …

Preserving The Fruits Of Labor: Impediments To University Inventor Mobility, Brenda M. Simon

Academic inventors must overcome numerous obstacles when they seek to leave their parent universities. The results of their work are often intertwined in what I call "innovation-essential components," which are important aspects of the. innovative process that create strong ties to the parent university, such as data, patents, trade secrets, grants, contracts, materials, and other agreements and restrictions. Innovation-essential components effectively bind university inventors to their parent institutions, making departure unworkable without the university's approval. Universities sometimes further complicate inventor mobility by entering into unlawful agreements with other academic institutions in their efforts to prevent inventor movement or by engaging …
Pulling The Wrong Lever Opens A Trap Door: Using Taxes To Fight The Opioid Epidemic, Michelle M. Kwon
Pulling The Wrong Lever Opens A Trap Door: Using Taxes To Fight The Opioid Epidemic, Michelle M. Kwon
Scholarly Works
By the late 1990s, a cultural shift that helped to normalize prescription opioid use was underway in the United States. Pharmaceutical companies, regulators, and prescribers were among the intentional or unwitting change agents in this cultural revolution. Between 1999 and 2010, the number of opioid prescriptions written in the United States increased by 300%. 1 Between 1999 and 2015, the number of opioid-related deaths quadrupled2 Like a prescribed wildland burn that grows out of control, America's dependence on prescription opioids has become overpowering and uncontainable. The opioid epidemic has taken an obvious human toll. It has also exacted a charge …

Amazonia has the richest primate fauna in the world. Nonetheless, the diversity and distribution of Amazonian primates remain little known and the scarcity of baseline data challenges their conservation. These challenges are especially acute in the Amazonian arc of deforestation, the 2500 km long southern edge of the Amazonian biome that is rapidly being deforested and converted to agricultural and pastoral landscapes. Amazonian marmosets of the genus Mico are little known endemics of this region and therefore a priority for research and conservation efforts. However, even nascent conservation efforts are hampered by taxonomic uncertainties in this group, such as the …

Post-Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema Interventions And Their Relationship To Social Involvement And Quality Of Life For Middle-Aged Women, Abby Bauman, Jenna Holm, Sarah Zuelzke
Critically Appraised Topics
In the United States, statistics have shown that there is a one in eight percent chance that a woman will develop breast cancer sometime throughout their life, and it is estimated that there will be 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in women in the year 2021 (American Cancer Society, 2021). One in five of the women who survive breast cancer will develop lymphedema within the initial three years following their breast cancer treatment (American College of Surgeons, 2013; DiSipio et al., 2013). Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive condition that is defined by the abnormal swelling caused …
Prevailing Theories Of Over-Imitation, Christa Griffith
Prevailing Theories Of Over-Imitation, Christa Griffith
2021 Honors Symposium
Imitation is a naturally occurring process of human development where individuals can learn different skills and behaviors by mimicking those around them. Imitation plays a vital role in the development of cognitive and social communication behaviors such as language and joint attention. Although imitation appears to have a clear positive utilization there are instances where its utility is reduced. Over-imitation is the process of an individual imitating actions even when those actions are not causally relevant to the objective to the task. Whiten et al. (2016) said that “the occurrence of overimitation in the real world, maximizes the power of …
Dysregulation Of The Muscle Clock During Development Of Cancer Cachexia, Madeline Amos
Dysregulation Of The Muscle Clock During Development Of Cancer Cachexia, Madeline Amos
2021 Honors Symposium
INTRODUCTION
Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death across the world. Among many conditions that accompany cancer, cachexia is one that has long been identified as an unfortunate consequence. Cachexia is a skeletal muscle-wasting syndrome that ultimately leads to deterioration in the body’s functional ability and is considered to be irreversible solely by nutritional means. Researchers have yet to identify the precise mechanisms responsible for its development and current treatments remain inadequate.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to confirm the dysregulation of Clock gene expression in male and female tumor-bearing mice, whether such effects …

Food And Drug Regulation: A Statutory Approach, Adam I. Muchmore
Food And Drug Regulation: A Statutory Approach, Adam I. Muchmore
Books
This is the first chapter of a new casebook on food and drug regulation. This book presents food and drug regulation as a statutory subject. It is organized around the structure of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and emphasizes guided reading of statutes, regulations, and federal register documents. Cases are presented primarily when they involve major issues of statutory interpretation, are historically significant, or are in one of the areas where case law plays a major role.
The book is designed to work with a Statutory and Regulatory Supplement provided as a PDF. The statutes and regulations in …

Food And Drug Regulation: Statutory And Regulatory Supplement, Adam I. Muchmore
Books
This Statutory and Regulatory Supplement is intended for use with its companion casebook, Food and Drug Regulation: A Statutory Approach (2021). This is not a traditional statutory supplement. Instead, it contains selected, aggressively edited provisions of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), related statutes, and the Code of Federal Regulations. The Supplement includes all provisions assigned as reading in the casebook, as well as a few additional provisions that some professors may wish to cover. The excerpts are designed to be teachable rather than comprehensive.
