Quantitated Effects Of Nutritional Supplementation On Exercise Induced Sweat, Andrew Blake Austin Browder
Quantitated Effects Of Nutritional Supplementation On Exercise Induced Sweat, Andrew Blake Austin Browder
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Discovery studies have identified many metabolites contained in human sweat. However, quantitative analysis of the sweat metabolome content remains mostly unknown. Furthermore several attributes, including rate, have been defined to affect sweat metabolite content, while other effectors, like diet, remain unknown. This study works to quantitatively define the metabolite impact caused by nutritional supplementation. To better understand the effect diet plays, a LC-MS method was developed focusing on improving resolution and peak width. While the literature provided examples of how diet affected sweat metabolite concentrations, the long-term effects of diet have not been explored. The experiment described here attempts to …

Application Of Analogical Reasoning For Use In Visual Knowledge Extraction, Kara Lian Combs
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
There is a continual push to make Artificial Intelligence (AI) as human-like as possible; however, this is a difficult task because of its inability to learn beyond its current comprehension. Analogical reasoning (AR) has been proposed as one method to achieve this goal. Current literature lacks a technical comparison on psychologically-inspired and natural-language-processing-produced AR algorithms with consistent metrics on multiple-choice word-based analogy problems. Assessment is based on “correctness” and “goodness” metrics. There is not a one-size-fits-all algorithm for all textual problems. As contribution in visual AR, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is integrated with the AR vector space model, Global …

The socio-ecological systems (SESs) framework provides cross-disciplinary insight into complex environmental problems. Numerous studies have applied the SES framework to coastal and marine environments over the last two decades. We review and analyze 98 of those studies to (i) describe how SES concepts were examined and measured, (ii) describe how the studies included feedbacks and thresholds, and (iii) identify and analyze elements unique to coastal and marine SES frameworks. We find that progress has been made in understanding key SES properties in coastal and marine ecosystems, which include resilience, adaptive capacity, vulnerability, and governance. A variety of methods has been …

An Adaptive Behavioral Immune System: A Model Of Population Health Behavior, Julian M. Saad, James O. Prochaska
An Adaptive Behavioral Immune System: A Model Of Population Health Behavior, Julian M. Saad, James O. Prochaska
Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications
The understanding that immunity could be strengthened in the general population (e.g., through vaccine interventions) supported global advances upon acute infectious disease epidemics in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. However, in the twenty-first century, global populations face chronic disease epidemics. Research demonstrates that diseases largely emerge from health risk behavior. The understanding of how health behavior, like the biological immune system, can be strengthened in the general population, could support advances in the twenty-first century. To consider how health behavior can be strengthened in the general population, the authors present a theoretical model of population health behavior. The model …

Medial Prefrontal Cortical Projections Are Altered By A Single Acute Fear Experience: Evidence For Biological Mechanisms Of Anxiety And Substance Abuse Disorders, E L. Bearer, Taylor Uselman, Christopher M. Medina, Russell E. Jacobs
Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
Pyramidal neurons from medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) project into striatum, thalamus, hypothalamus, and went as far as dorsal raphe nucleus (midbrain) and locus coeruleus (pons). Neural activity in mPFC is reciprocally modulated by monoamine systems arising in these distant brain regions: noradrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic. By deregulating these systems genetically, we previously reported that functional projections from mPFC are similarly regulated by these monoaminergic systems using brain-wide tracing based on manganese-enhanced magentic resonance imaging (MEMRI) followed by statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Here we report that a single experience of acute threat alters mPFC projections in wild type mice, and this …

Structural Characterization And In Vitro Antiproliferative Activity Of Non-Specific Lipid Transfer Protein 1 (Nsltp1) From Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare) Seeds, Mekdes Megeressa
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are cationic proteins involved in intracellular lipid shuttling, in growth and reproduction, as well as in defense against pathogenic microbes. Even though the primary and spatial structures of some nsLTPs from different plants indicate their similar features, they exhibit distinct lipid-binding specificities signifying their various biological roles that dictate further structural study. The present study determined the complete amino acid sequence, in silico 3D structure modeling, and in vitro antiproliferative activity of nsLTP1 from fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds.
Fennel is a member of the family Umbelliferae (Apiaceae) native to southern Europe and the …
Synovial Fibrosis In Osteoarthritis Of The Knee: Mechanism Of Development And Potential Therapeutic Targets, Marwa Qadri
Synovial Fibrosis In Osteoarthritis Of The Knee: Mechanism Of Development And Potential Therapeutic Targets, Marwa Qadri
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Synovial tissue fibrosis is an immune mediated disease characterized by fibroblast cell migration, proliferation and transition to a myofibroblast phenotype characterized by alpha smooth muscle actin (a-SMA) upregulation and stress fiber formation. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-b) plays an important role in mediating the pathogenesis of synovial fibrosis. Synoviocytes produce proteoglycan-4 (PRG4; lubricin), a heavily glycosylated mucinous glycoprotein, and hyaluronic acid (HA). Both PRG4 and HA compete for binding to the CD44 receptor. Furthermore, rhPRG4 binds to TLR2 and TLR4 and acts as an antagonist to prevent TLR2 and TLR4 activation by bacterial ligands. In this work, we aimed to investigate …

Little is known about the interactive effects of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) and abscisic acid (ABA) on nitrogen (N) metabolism and related changes at molecular and biochemical levels under drought stress. The present study highlights the independent and combined effect of NO and ABA (grouped as “nitrate agonists”) on expression profiles of representative key genes known to be involved in N-uptake and assimilation, together with proline metabolism, N–NO metabolism enzyme’s activity and nutrient content in polyethylene glycol (PEG) treated roots of Indian mustard (B. juncea cv. Varuna). Here we report that PEG mediated drought stress negatively inhibited growth performance, as …

A Review On The Influence Of Processing Methods On Corrosion Rates Of Mg-Cnt Nanocomposites, Jiselle Thornby, Ali Alshami, Meysem Haghshenas
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
Several studies have reported the corrosion rates of magnesium carbon nanotube nanocomposites, but their corrosion behavior is still not well understood. Adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to magnesium (Mg) matrices almost always results in an increase in mechanical properties, e.g., increased elastic modulus, hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and yield strength. However, this increase in mechanical properties usually comes at the expense of compromised corrosion resistance. Galvanic interactions between the carbon nanotubes and the magnesium matrix are the usual culprits of nanocomposite corrosion. It is important to study the corrosive behavior of these materials further to create a nanocomposite that is less …

The College Experience In The Eyes Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Andrea I. Olmeda Santiago
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events experienced by children and adolescents ages zero to 17 that can have a long-lasting effect on a person's overall mental and physical health. Recent studies have shown that the rate of students entering college with one or more ACEs has increased, potentially resulting in a lower rate of college completion. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into how college students with multiple ACEs navigate the college experience despite their barriers. College students are a unique population due to their range of diversity in every aspect of a student's life, including …

Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498): Fashioning Of A Prophet And A New Jerusalem In Late Fifteenth-Century Florence, Ann Christiansen Remp
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) was a Dominican mendicant of the fifteenth century who fashioned himself as a prophet. Although there were many prophets in Italy, this study argued that Savonarola primarily emulated the biblical prophets of the Old Testament. Analysis of Savonarola’s discourse was based on electronic or print translations of his sermons and other writings. War, violence, corruption of the Church, and changing forms of government led to a fear among Florentine that drove them to seek prophets. The study followed Savonarola’s early preaching, call to prophesy, self-representation as a prophet, and the height of his acceptance as a prophet …
