A Rules-Based Shoreface Translation And Sediment Budgeting Tool For Estimating Coastal Change: Shoretrans, R. Jak Mccarroll, Gerd Masselink, Nieves G. Valiente, Timothy Scott, Mark Wiggins, Josie Alice Kirby, Mark Davidson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Predicting change to shorelines globally presents an increasing challenge as sea level rise (SLR) accelerates. Many shoreline prediction models use the simplistic ‘Bruun rule’ for dealing with SLR profile translation, in-part due to alternative approaches being too complex and time-consuming to implement. To address this, we introduce ShoreTrans: a simple, rules-based, user-input driven, shoreface translation and sediment budgeting model, that applies the surveyed 2D-profile (not a parameterization), for estimating change to realistic coastlines, resulting from SLR and variations in sediment supply, while accounting for armouring, hard-rock cliffs and outcropping rocks. The tool can be applied to sand, gravel, rock and …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

MARINE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES The global ocean and its marine resources play an important role in the livelihoods, food and general wellbeing of humanity. This is especially relevant to the coastal communities in Southeast Asia where almost all the countries have extensive coastlines and a long and rich history of marine-related activities that are key contributors to their economies, social structures and human health. The Southeast Asian seas link the Pacific and Indian Oceans and are characterised by high diversity habitats including coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows, favoured by the tropical climate and heavy precipitation that transports nutrients to the …

Evaluating Lamp Assays For Detection Of Phytoplasmas Classified In Different Ribosomal Groups, Naofel Aljafer, Mathew Dickinson Jan 2021

Evaluating Lamp Assays For Detection Of Phytoplasmas Classified In Different Ribosomal Groups, Naofel Aljafer, Mathew Dickinson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

A new set of loop-mediated isothermal amplification assays was developed for detection of phytoplasmas associated with plant diseases and optimised for rapid laboratory detection. This set of assays was designed based on the leucyl tRNA synthetase gene expressed in most of the phytoplasmas and showing a good level of sequence divergence among strains from different 16Sr groups. This makes it a good target for developing discrete assays that can detect specific phytoplasma 16Sr groups. In this study, unique sets of LAMP assays were designed and validated for seven phytoplasma ribosomal groups (16SrI, 16SrII, 16SrIII, 16SrV, 16SrVI, 16SrX, and 16SrXII). These …

Reconstructing Baselines: Use Of Habitat Suitability Modelling To Predict Pre-Fishing Condition Of A Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem, Anna Leena Downie, Nils Piechaud, Kerry Howell, Froján C Barrio, Mar Sacau, Andrew Kenny

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

As industrialized fishing activities have moved into deeper water, the recognition of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) has become important for the protection of the deep-sea. Our limited knowledge on the past and present distribution of VMEs hinders our ability to manage bottom fisheries effectively. This study investigated whether accounting for bottom fishing intensity (derived from Vessel Monitoring System records) as a predictor in habitat suitability models can (1) improve predictions of, and (2) provide estimates for a pre-fishing baseline for the distribution and biomass of a VME indicator taxon. Random Forest models were applied to presence/absence and biomass of Geodia …

Wave Modulation Of Flows On Open And Closed Reefs, M Lindhart, Js Rogers, Sa Maticka, Cb Woodson, Sg Monismith

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Using observations, numerical models, and theory, we explore a framework to classify reefs as open or closed based on their dynamics. While the concepts of open and closed reefs are used widely in studies of coral reef hydrodynamics and are generally based on geometry, there is no consensus on what qualifies as open and closed. With observations from Ofu, American Samoa, we show that the reef flat exhibits two different dynamical regimes depending on tidal and wave forcing. Flow over this reef flat resembles a classic one‐dimensional barrier reef flow during low tide, where wave setup creates a cross‐reef pressure …

How Consistent Are Estimates Of Roughness Parameters On A Rough Coral Reef?, M Lindhart, Sg Monismith, A Khrizman, D Mucciarone, R Dunbar

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral reefs are hydrodynamically rough, creating turbulent boundary layers that transport and mix various scalars that impact reef processes and also can be used to monitor reef health. Often reef boundary layer characteristics derived from a single instrument are assumed to accurately represent the study site. This approach relies on two assumptions: first, that the boundary layer is relatively homogeneous across the area of interest, and second, that two instruments displaced in space or with different spatiotemporal resolution would produce similar results when sampling the same flow. We deployed four velocimeters over a 15 × 20 m reef at 10 …

Trait Evaluations Of Faces And Voices: Comparing Within- And Between-Person Variability, Nadine Lavan, Mila Mileva, Andrew W. Young, A. Mike Burton, Carolyn Mcgettigan

School of Psychology

Human faces and voices are rich sources of information that can vary in many different ways. Most of the literature on face/voice perception has focused on understanding how people look and sound different to each other (between-person variability). However, recent studies highlight the ways in which the same person can look and sound different on different occasions (within-person variability). Across three experiments, we examined how within- and between-person variability relate to one another for social trait impressions by collecting trait ratings attributed to multiple face images and voice recordings of the same people. We find that within-person variability in social …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The COVID-19 pandemic created new challenges for children including access to education and limiting social and emotional connections to extended family, friends, and the community. Globally, opportunities for sharing children’s self-reported experiences during lockdown were limited. The primary aim of this project was to create an art-E-Book that reflects children’s experiences of life during the COVID-19 pandemic that could be shared with other children around the world. Secondly, we wanted to reflect on the consultation undertaken within the International Network of Child and Family Centered Care (INCFCC) using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle framework. Children from around the world were invited …

Using Dartmoor Ponies In Conservation Grazing To Reduce Molinia Caerulea Dominance And Encourage Germination Of Calluna Vulgaris In Heathland Vegetation On Dartmoor, Uk, Paul H. Lunt, Jakob L. Leigh, Samantha A. Mcneil, Malcolm J. Gibb Jan 2021

Gibb

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The increasing dominance of purple moor-grass Molinia caerulea in heathland ecosystems in the UK is of growing concern due to its detrimental impact on plant and animal diversity on sites of nature conservation interest. The use of free-ranging ponies to reduce Molinia dominance was investigated from 2017 to 2019 within a 425 ha site on Dartmoor, UK. Salt blocks were used to attract the ponies to a Molinia-dominated area of heath within the site, away from their previously-preferred grazing areas. The impact of pony grazing was assessed by measurements of vegetation structure and plant species composition. The increased presence of …

Marine Fungi And The Biological Carbon Pump - A Quest For Novel Biomarkers For Key Players In The Carbon Cycle, E Cooper, S Thomas, S Ussher, D Rush, M Cunliffe, S Lengger

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The biological carbon pump (BCP) has a major role in the ability of the oceans to control the global climate and carbon cycle. Inorganic carbon is assimilated by phytoplankton in the surface ocean and converted into organic matter. The organic matter is transported to the deeper ocean interior by the BCP and degraded by microbes en route or sequestered to the deep ocean [1]. Marine fungi are understudied compared to other marine microbes, yet can account for as much biomass as prokaryotes on sinking organic matter in the BCP [2]. Fungi, both unicellular and filamentous, are active in carbon degradation …

Peninsula Medical School

Talin (TLN1) is a mechanosensitive component of adhesion complexes that directly couples integrins to the actin cytoskeleton. In response to force, talin undergoes switch-like behavior of its multiple rod domains that modulate interactions with its binding partners. Cyclin-dependent kinase-1 (CDK1) is a key regulator of the cell cycle, exerting its effects through synchronized phosphorylation of a large number of protein targets. CDK1 activity maintains adhesion during interphase, and its inhibition is a prerequisite for the tightly choreographed changes in cell shape and adhesion that are required for successful mitosis. Using a combination of biochemical, structural, and cell biological approaches, we …
