Liposomal delivery of Remdesivir for localized and targeted treatment of COVID-19

COVID-19 is a serious, and in many cases lethal, disease that is caused by infection of the upper respiratory tract by the novel betacoronavirus, SARS-Cov-2 virus. This disease has a very high mortality rate and has affected the world in a global pandemic. SARS-Cov-2 binds to the ACE2 receptor via the receptor-binding domain (RBD) in the S protein. After this, the virus fuses with the cell membrane by the formation of a six-helix bundle. Thus, the S protein plays a major role in ensuring that the virus attaches to …

Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes Jan 2021

Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes

Loyola Papers

This paper examines an important aspect to which the Pope dedicates the entire Chapter 6 of this landmark document: the formation of an authentic ecological spirituality and pedagogy to address the current global crisis. Unfortunately, thischapter is frequently neglected in discussions, perhaps not only because of its placement towards the end of the encyclical, but also because spirituality and pedagogy are often viewed as the exclusive realm of a few experts, resulting in a certain reticence to tackle them. Hence, this paper develops the notion of creatio continua as a practical summons to participate in the missio Dei. It then …

Applying Comprehensive Model Of Information Seeking To Hepatitis B And C Patients’ Information Seeking In The South African Context: A Scoping Review, Irewole Dorcas. Ibinaiye

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The continuous spread of Hepatitis B and C Viral diseases have affected over 248 million people worldwide. Despite the frustrations expressed regarding patients information needs, awareness and knowledge about the mode of contact of the disease, information access and use, studies addressing hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) patients information needs and seeking behaviour are lacking. This paper examines the relevance of comprehensive model of information seeking (CMIS) in addressing hepatitis B and C patients’ information behaviour, to ascertain the trend of use to inform the future applications of the model. Four databases were searched for articles published between 1993 …

Evaluating Us Consumers' Perception Of Foods Made With Cricket Powder, Ryan Paul Ardoin Jan 2021

Evaluating Us Consumers' Perception Of Foods Made With Cricket Powder, Ryan Paul Ardoin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Expanding the consumption of edible insects has been proposed as a strategy for global food security due to their sustainability of production and high nutritional value. In the U.S.A., the idea of eating insects is generally unappealing. This research took a methodical approach to understanding U.S. consumers perceptions of insects as food- specifically, products made with cricket powder. Recent consumer-oriented entomophagy research (2015-2020) was reviewed to consolidate understanding of Westerners’ perceptions of edible insects and to evaluate research trends. An online survey of 1,005 U.S. consumers investigated appropriate products for insect protein powder incorporation (based on willingness to try; WTT), …

Growth-Regulating Factor 5 (Grf5)-Mediated Gene Regulatory Network Promotes Leaf Growth And Expansion In Poplar, Wenqi Wu, Jiang Li, Qiao Wang, Kaiwen Lv, Kang Du, Hairong Wei Jan 2021

Growth-Regulating Factor 5 (Grf5)-Mediated Gene Regulatory Network Promotes Leaf Growth And Expansion In Poplar, Wenqi Wu, Jiang Li, Qiao Wang, Kaiwen Lv, Kang Du, Hairong Wei

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Although polyploid plants have larger leaves than their diploid counterparts, the molecular mechanisms underlying this difference (or trait) remain elusive. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between triploid and full-sib diploid poplar trees were identified from two transcriptomic data sets followed by a gene association study among DEGs to identify key leaf growth regulators. Yeast one-hybrid system, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and dual-luciferase assay were employed to substantiate that PpnGRF5-1 directly regulated PpnCKX1. The interactions between PpnGRF5-1 and growth-regulating factor (GRF)-interacting factors (GIFs) were experimentally validated and a multilayered hierarchical regulatory network (ML-hGRN)-mediated by PpnGRF5-1 was constructed with top-down graphic Gaussian model …

The Failure Of Imagination: A Theoretical And Pragmatic Analysis Of Utopianism As An Orientation For Human Life, Maverick Edwards Jan 2021

The Failure Of Imagination: A Theoretical And Pragmatic Analysis Of Utopianism As An Orientation For Human Life, Maverick Edwards

Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy

Utopian theorists have long attempted to imagine “perfect” frameworks for human life. From Plato’s description of the ideal, state-centric society in the “Laws”, to Murray Rothbard’s anarcho-capitalist society, theorists have created a myriad of solutions they believe will fix most, if not all, human dilemmas. In analyzing these utopian projects from pragmatic and theoretical perspectives, this paper will argue that utopias are a failed project. Pragmatically, the development of utopia has a long and consistent track record of failure. Even the “successes” of utopian thought are under scrutiny, as they ultimately collapsed. Theoretically, the conceptualization of “perfection” entails unimaginable risk. …

Autonomous In Situ Calibration Of Ion‐Sensitive Field Effect Transistor Ph Sensors, Philip J. Bresnahan, Yuichiro Takeshita, Taylor Wirth, Todd R. Martz, Tyler Cyronak, Rebecca Albright, Kennedy Wolfe, Joseph K. Warren, Keaton Mertz

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Ion‐sensitive field effect transistor‐based pH sensors have been shown to perform well in high frequency and long‐term ocean sampling regimes. The Honeywell Durafet is widely used due to its stability, fast response, and characterization over a large range of oceanic conditions. However, potentiometric pH monitoring is inherently complicated by the fact that the sensors require careful calibration. Offsets in calibration coefficients have been observed when comparing laboratory to field‐based calibrations and prior work has led to the recommendation that an in situ calibration be performed based on comparison to discrete samples. Here, we describe our work toward a self‐calibration apparatus …

The dissemination of COVID-19 around the globe has been followed by an increased consumption of antibiotics. This is related to the concern for bacterial superinfection in COVID-19 patients. The identification of bacterial pathogens is challenging in low and middle income countries (LMIC), as there are no readily-available and cost-effective clinical or biological markers that can effectively discriminate between bacterial and viral infections. Fortunately, faced with the threat of COVID-19 spread, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of antimicrobial stewardship programs, as well as infection prevention and control measures that could help reduce the microbial load and hence …

Pressure Effects On Sulfur‐Oxidizing Activity Of Thiobacillus Thioparus, Jorge R. Osman, Hervé Cardon, Gilles Montagnac, Aude Picard, Isabelle Daniel

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Carbon capture and storage technologies are crucial for reducing carbon emission from power plants as a response to global climate change. The CarbFix project (Iceland) aims at examining the geochemical response of injected CO2 into subsurface reservoirs. The potential role of the subsurface biosphere has been little investigated up to now. Here, we used Thiobacillus thioparus that became abundant at the CarbFix1 pilot site after injection of CO2 and purified geothermal gases in basaltic aquifer at 400–800 m depth (4–8 MPa). The capacity of T. thioparus to produce sulfate, through oxidation of thiosulfate, was measured by Raman spectroscopy as a …

Affective Sentience And Moral Protection, Russell Powell, Irina Mikhalevich

Articles

We have structured our response according to five questions arising from the commentaries: (i) What is sentience? (ii) Is sentience a necessary or sufficient condition for moral standing? (iii) What methods should guide comparative cognitive research in general, and specifically in studying invertebrates? (iv) How should we balance scientific uncertainty and moral risk? (v) What practical strategies can help reduce biases and morally dismissive attitudes toward invertebrates?

Forget Pro-Life And Pro-Choice: Refocus Transvaginal Ultrasound Abortion Laws On Medicine, Casey Hughes Jan 2021

Forget Pro-Life And Pro-Choice: Refocus Transvaginal Ultrasound Abortion Laws On Medicine, Casey Hughes

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

This Note reconciles the divide between the TV US debate and the original intent of abortion regulations to protect women’s health. By first analyzing the medicine and then applying it to the law, this Note proves transvaginal ultrasound regulations are not undue burdens on women’s access to abortion. Part I of this Note discusses transvaginal ultrasounds and their medical use in obstetrics, demonstrating they are not undue burdens, but rather beneficial to women and often necessary to support women’s health prior to abortions. Part II of this Note discusses abortion and ultrasound-related legal decisions and how they apply to …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A novel microsporidial disease was documented in two ornamental fish species, black tetra Gymnocorymbus ternetzi Boulenger 1895 and cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi Schultz 1956. The non-xenoma-forming microsporidium occurred diffusely in most internal organs and the gill, thus referring to the condition as tetra disseminated microsporidiosis (TDM). The occurrence of TDM in black tetra was associated with chronic mortality in a domestic farmed population, while the case in cardinal tetra occurred in moribund fish while in quarantine at a public aquarium. Histology showed that coelomic visceral organs were frequently necrotic and severely disrupted by extensive infiltrates of macrophages. Infected macrophages were …

Healthy brain function is marked by neuronal network dynamics at or near the critical phase, which separates regimes of instability and stasis. A failure to remain at this critical point can lead to neurological disorders such as epilepsy, which is associated with pathological synchronization of neuronal oscillations. Using full Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) simulations on a Small-World Network, we are able to generate synthetic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals with intervals corresponding to seizure (ictal) or non-seizure (interictal) states that can occur based on the hyperexcitability of the artificial neurons and the strength and topology of the synaptic connections between them. These interictal simulations …
