Mandatory Sexual Assault Kit Testing Policies And Arrest Trends: A Natural Experiment, Scott M. Mourtgos, Ian T. Adams, Justin Nix, Tara N. Richards Feb 2021

Mandatory Sexual Assault Kit Testing Policies And Arrest Trends: A Natural Experiment, Scott M. Mourtgos, Ian T. Adams, Justin Nix, Tara N. Richards

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The present study employs a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the effects of a mandatory sexual assault kit (SAK) testing policy on rape arrests in a large western US jurisdiction. We use a Bayesian structural time-series model and monthly data on arrests for rape from 2010 through 2019. In the post-implementation period, we observed a downward trend in the arrest rate for rape. Based on the results, the most conservative interpretation of our findings is that the policy implementation did not affect rape arrest rates. While mandatory SAK testing policies are often advocated for based on the belief that they will …

The Quest To Completely Map The World’S Oceans In Support Of Understanding Marine Biodiversity And The Regulatory Barriers We Have Created, Larry A. Mayer, J. Ashley Roach Feb 2021

The Quest To Completely Map The World’S Oceans In Support Of Understanding Marine Biodiversity And The Regulatory Barriers We Have Created, Larry A. Mayer, J. Ashley Roach

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

This paper reviews the current poor state of our knowledge of the bathymetry of the seafloor (only approximately 15% has been mapped by modern bathymetric sonars) and discusses the efforts being made under the auspices of the Nippon Foundation gebco Seabed 2030 program to rectify this situation and to produce a publically available, complete map of the ocean basins that can be used to support UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 by 2030. It will be impossible to achieve the targeted level of sustainable development without a comprehensive map of the ocean floor, a fact recognized by the planners of the …

A Brief Review Of Cas Doping Jurisprudence Issues,, Mitten, Matthew J.

Santa Clara Law Review

This article briefly summarizes several leading, recent Court of Arbitration for Sport arbitration awards interpreting and applying the 2015 World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) and, in a few instances, its 2009 or 2003 prior versions. It provides a primer regarding various issues frequently arising in Olympic and international sports doping cases, including proof of Anti-doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) by nonanalytical positive evidence; rebuttal of presumed intentional ADRVs; proof of an athlete’s no fault or no significant fault; determination of an athlete’s appropriate period of ineligibility less than the presumptive standard sanction for an ADRV; and determination of the appropriate period of …

Interpretation In Dance Performing, Aili W. Bresnahan Feb 2021

Interpretation In Dance Performing, Aili W. Bresnahan

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

This essay is on the role and function of the dance performer, the person who is dancing in a kind of dance-as-art event that is designed for and performed for an audience that perceives, witnesses, experiences, and appreciates the dance in various ways. As such this chapter focuses on a component of dance practice that diverges from critical-philosophical practice in two ways: 1) it is from the point of view of an embodied person engaged in a dynamic process, and 2) the dance as art on which this perspective focuses is itself treated as a process or event that need …

Social Network Analysis As A Predictor Of Communication Patterns In A Small Group, Consuela Hegeman Feb 2021

Social Network Analysis As A Predictor Of Communication Patterns In A Small Group, Consuela Hegeman

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Few studies have examined interdisciplinary collaboration in primary care using social network analysis. The present study seeks to examine connections among leadership in the Interprofessional Primary Care Institute (IPCI) in order to measure the effect of changes in the network over time, effect of work group collaboration, and centralization on communication patterns within the group. This study involved a secondary analysis, using data from Gathercoal et al.’s (2019) social network analysis (SNA) of the IPCI, and follow-up data collection. Data were gathered via an online survey, meeting records, and collateral information about IPCI. Social connections within the network, specifically eigenvector …

Freshwater Sponge Hosts And Their Green Algae Symbionts: A Tractable Model To Understand Intracellular Symbiosis, Chelsea Hall, Sara Camilli, Henry Dwaah, Benjamin Kornegay, Christie Lacy, Malcolm Hill, April Hill Feb 2021

Freshwater Sponge Hosts And Their Green Algae Symbionts: A Tractable Model To Understand Intracellular Symbiosis, Chelsea Hall, Sara Camilli, Henry Dwaah, Benjamin Kornegay, Christie Lacy, Malcolm Hill, April Hill

All Faculty Scholarship

In many freshwater habitats, green algae form intracellular symbioses with a variety of heterotrophic host taxa including several species of freshwater sponge. These sponges perform important ecological roles in their habitats, and the poriferan:green algae partnerships offers unique opportunities to study the evolutionary origins and ecological persistence of endosymbioses. We examined the association between Ephydatia muelleri and its chlorophyte partner to identify features of host cellular and genetic responses to the presence of intracellular algal partners. Chlorella-like green algal symbionts were isolated from field-collected adult E. muelleri tissue harboring algae. The sponge-derived algae were successfully cultured and subsequently used to …

Microbiome Analyses Demonstrate Specific Communities Within Five Shark Species, Rachael Storo, Cole Easson, Mahmood S. Shivji, Jose V. Lopez Feb 2021

Microbiome Analyses Demonstrate Specific Communities Within Five Shark Species, Rachael Storo, Cole Easson, Mahmood S. Shivji, Jose V. Lopez

Biology Faculty Articles

Profiles of symbiotic microbial communities (“microbiomes”) can provide insight into the natural history and ecology of their hosts. Using high throughput DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 region, microbiomes of five shark species in South Florida (nurse, lemon, sandbar, Caribbean reef, and tiger) have been characterized for the first time. The microbiomes show species specific microbiome composition, distinct from surrounding seawater. Shark anatomical location (gills, teeth, skin, cloaca) affected the diversity of microbiomes. An in-depth analysis of teeth communities revealed species specific microbial communities. For example, the genus Haemophilus, explained 7.0% of the differences of the teeth microbiomes …

Sales, Acquisitions, And Mergers Of Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing Companies: The Risks And A Solution, Alyssa K Mcleod Feb 2021

Sales, Acquisitions, And Mergers Of Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing Companies: The Risks And A Solution, Alyssa K Mcleod

Texas A&M Law Review

Direct-to-consumer genetic tests have become increasingly popular in the United States within the last few years. However, these tests pose many risks to the consumer, most notably privacy risks. A subset of these privacy risks involves the issue of company mergers, acquisitions, and sales. Many companies in the direct-to-consumer genetic testing market have privacy policies that contain a variation of a “business transfer” clause. These clauses specify that in the event the company goes through a business transition such as a sale, merger, or acquisition, the consumer’s personal information—including the consumer’s DNA—will be among the assets transferred. This Article explores …

Net Volatilization Of Pahs From The North Pacific To The Arctic Ocean Observed By Passive Sampling, Haowen Zheng, Minggang Cai, Wenlu Zhao, Mohammed Khairy, Mian Chen, Hengxiang Deng, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The North Pacific-Arctic Oceans are important compartments for semi-volatile organic compounds’ (SVOCs) global marine inventory, but whether they act as a “source" or "sink” remains controversial. To study the air-sea exchange and fate of SVOCs during their poleward long-range transport, low-altitude atmosphere and surface seawater were measured for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by passive sampling from July to September in 2014. Gaseous PAH concentrations (0.67–13 ng m−3) were dominated by phenanthrene (Phe) and fluorene (Flu), which displayed an inverse correlation with latitude, as well as a significant linear relationship with partial pressure and inverse temperature. Concentrations of PAHs in seawater …

A Composite Textual Phenomenological Approach To Cures Versus Traditional Laboratory Experiences, Amie S. Sommers, Dana Richter-Egger, Christine E. Cutucache Feb 2021

A Composite Textual Phenomenological Approach To Cures Versus Traditional Laboratory Experiences, Amie S. Sommers, Dana Richter-Egger, Christine E. Cutucache

The Qualitative Report

Here we present unique perspectives from undergraduate students (n=3) in STEM who have taken both a traditional laboratory iteration and a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) iteration of the same introductory chemistry course. CUREs can be effective models for integrating research in courses and fostering student learning gains. Via phenomenological interviews, we asked students to describe the differences in their perspectives, feelings, and experiences between a traditional lab guided by a lab manual and a CURE. We found that (i.) critical thinking/problem solving, (ii.) group work/collaboration, (iii.) student-led research questions and activities, and (iv.) time management are the top four …

Habitat Characteristics Of Two Scorpion Species, Liocheles Australasiae (Fabricius, 1775) And Isometrus Maculatus (De Geer, 1778) In Miyako Islands, Japan, Kazusa Kawai

Euscorpius

Scorpion surveys were conducted in the five islands: Miyakojima, Ikemajima, Kurimajima, Irabujima, and Shimojishima (Miyako Islands, part of Nansei/Ryukyu Islands of Japan). Eight individuals of Liocheles australasiae (Hormuridae) and 16 individuals of Isometrus maculatus (Buthidae) were observed in a total of 10 points on four islands, except Ikemajima. The localities of both species are recorded in this survey, focusing on altitude, distance from the nearest coast, and sunlight. The lowest temperatures in the habitat are also examined, and the cold tolerance of the species is discussed.

The Marketing Behind The Merging Of Conflict Resolution With Communities, Emily K. Skinner Feb 2021

The Marketing Behind The Merging Of Conflict Resolution With Communities, Emily K. Skinner

This session is derived from the presenters Ph.D. dissertation research on examining the relationship between the high social need for conflict resolution and low social demand. Emily interviewed 30 millennials and 9 conflict resolution practitioners to evaluate language and social engagement and connection with marketing and branding of conflict resolution. The interviews painted a landscape of valleys of potential and uncharted territory of points of connection between the field and potential target markets. The research serves as an important tool for practitioners in evaluating their current practices and supporting strategic design of new practices by outlining gaps in language and …

Crises Beyond Nationalities, J P. Linstroth Feb 2021

Crises Beyond Nationalities, J P. Linstroth

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

The aim of my presentation titled, Crises Beyond Nationalities, is to discuss the topics of “immigration and racism”, “nationalism and terrorism”, “genocide”, “racial trauma”, “biology, neuroscience, and humanity”, and “empathy, love, and peace” so as not only to theorize about these complex issues but to point to ways forward with some progressive thinking. If the topics of “racism and immigration” are isolated without discussing their broader associations such as with nationalism and violence, or in the most extreme with genocide, then the arguments are not broad enough. As an anthropologist and peace activist, it is important to analyze such …

Power, Emotions, And Violent Conflicts, Daniel Rothbart Feb 2021

Power, Emotions, And Violent Conflicts, Daniel Rothbart

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Hatred, fear, and disdain—these are emotions that drive conflict protagonists to commit acts of violence against their adversaries. Conventional thinking among conflict analysts holds that the private realm of negative emotions exhibited by conflict actors is distinct fundamentally from the public world of objective causal drivers of conflict, such as poverty, structural violence and proliferation of small arms. However, such conventional thinking regarding this inherent duality of emotions and power cannot for the social-psychic force of affect emotions that intersects with the conflict dynamics. In many conflict settings, the release of such a force is a political act, with the …
