Beyond Hours Of Video Gameplay: Connections Between Verbal Aggressiveness, Genre Preference, And Technology Used, William T. Howe, Ioana A. Cionea

Communication Faculty Publications

This research examined how multiple factors (i.e., hours of gameplay, types of gameplay, preferred genre of video games, technology used to play games, and biological sex) were associated with both trait and situational verbal aggressiveness. Cross-sectional data were collected from 435 undergraduate students via an online questionnaire. Results indicated similar patterns to previous literature in that video gameplay hours were positively related to verbal aggressiveness. However, we extended research by also showing that a preference for certain genres and technology used to play video games were also related with both situational and trait verbal aggressiveness. Based on these results, we …

Mass spectrometry enables high-throughput screening of phosphoproteins across a broad range of biological contexts. When complemented by computational algorithms, phospho-proteomic data allows the inference of kinase activity, facilitating the identification of dysregulated kinases in various diseases including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. To enhance the reliability of kinase activity inference, we present a network-based framework, RoKAI, that integrates various sources of functional information to capture coordinated changes in signaling. Through computational experiments, we show that phosphorylation of sites in the functional neighborhood of a kinase are significantly predictive of its activity. The incorporation of this knowledge in RoKAI consistently …

Determination Of Vadose Zone And Saturated Zone Nitrate Lag Times Using Long-Term Groundwater Monitoring Data And Statistical Machine Learning, Martin J. Wells, Troy E. Gilmore, Natalie Nelson, John K. Bohlke

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this study, we explored the use of statistical machine learning and long-term groundwater nitrate monitoring data to estimate vadose zone and saturated zone lag times in an irrigated alluvial agricultural setting. Unlike most previous statistical machine learning studies that sought to predict groundwater nitrate concentrations within aquifers, the focus of this study was to leverage available groundwater nitrate concentrations and other environmental variables to determine mean regional vertical velocities (transport rates) of water and solutes in the vadose zone and saturated zone (3.50 and 3.75 m yr−1 , respectively). The statistical machine learning results are consistent with two primary …

Anti-Science Ideology, Shi-Ling Hsu Feb 2021

Anti-Science Ideology, Shi-Ling Hsu

University of Miami Law Review

Political attacks against scientists and scientific research are nothing new, though the Trump Administration appears to have increased both the breadth and the depth of such attacks. What is new, it seems, are attacks on science that are not in service of protecting any identifiable regulated industry. Under the Trump Administration, the attacks on science are more systemic, and aimed more at reducing scientific capacity in the federal government, rather than mere one-off policy interventions to help an individual industry.

This Article suggests that the Trump Administration, more than previous administrations, has sought to use science as part of a …

Although the lignan compound fargesin is a major ingredient in Shin-Yi, the roles of fargesin in carcinogenesis and cancer cell growth have not been elucidated. In this study, we observed that fargesin inhibited cell proliferation and transformation by suppression of epidermal growth factor (EGF)-stimulated G1/S-phase cell cycle transition in premalignant JB6 Cl41 and HaCaT cells. Unexpectedly, we found that signaling pathway analyses showed different regulation patterns in which fargesin inhibited phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT signaling without an alteration of or increase in mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) in JB6 Cl41 and HaCaT cells, while both signaling pathways were abrogated by …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

We propose a novel type of photonic-crystal (PC)-based nanostructures for efficient and tunable optically-induced spin current generation via the spin Seebeck and inverse spin Hall effects. It has been experimentally demonstrated that optical surface modes localized at the PC surface covered by ferromagnetic layer and materials with giant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) notably increase the efficiency of the optically-induced spin current generation, and provides its tunability by modifying the light wavelength or angle of incidence. Up to 100% of the incident light power can be transferred to heat within the SOC layer and, therefore, to the spin current. Importantly, the high …

Diversity And Inclusion Toolbox: Action Items For The Nonprofit Sector, Donovan Branche Phd, Karen Ford Dsw

#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference

There is a critical lack of diversity in leadership, particularly African-American women, across all sectors. Given that the nonprofit sector is an integral part of the social system, it makes sense to have leaders that reflect the social fabric of the United States. Diversifying the nonprofit work is an important goal, not only given underrepresentation but also because of looming population shifts. This paper builds on previous mixed methods research by the authors by adding concrete implications and action points to increase diversity and inclusion.

Quasi-School Leaders: The Lived Experiences Of High School Counseling Directors And Their Role In Schools, Andrea Evans

#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference

The aim of this study is to explore the lived experiences of high school counseling director’s and how their principal and district school counseling supervisor shape their experiences as leaders. The role of high school counseling director’s is increasingly complex, unique, and oftentimes misunderstood. They are often viewed as leaders and change agents in student’s overall success due to their unique skill levels in advocacy and collaboration (Kaffenberger, Murphy, & Bemak, 2006; McMahon, Mason, Daluga-Guenther, & Ruiz, 2014; Young, Millard, & Kneale, 2013). However, principal’s and district school counseling supervisors are key players in defining the role and responsibilities of …

The Ant Home Care Model In Palliative And End-Of-Life Care. An Investigation On Family Caregivers’ Satisfaction With The Services Provided., Veronica Zavagli

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

The World Health Organization plan for a Decade of Healthy Ageing 2020-2030 has established some priorities in the field of palliative and end-of-life care. It states that “people require non-discriminatory access to good-quality palliative and end-of-life care” and recommends the “implementation of strategies for the provision of information, training, respite and support for informal caregivers”. The priorities described are in line with the home care services that National Tumor Assistance (ANT) Foundation has been providing in Italy. This 5-years investigation was designed to measure caregivers’ satisfaction and determine what types of support services are associated with greater satisfaction. 5.441 family …

06. The Influence Of Med12 Knockdown On Adipogenesis, Emily Meaney, Jamie Sparkman, Joseph Straub, Sree Venigalla

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The ubiquity of obesity has increased exponentially, and the health burden of obesity-related diseases including type 2 diabetes, metabolic disorders, heart diseases, and some types of cancers is growing. Obesity is characterized by the excess accumulation of fat and adipose tissue and driven by adipogenesis, which is the process in which stem cells differentiate into adipocytes. We utilize human adipose derived stem cells (hASCs) isolated from adult fat tissue to study adipogenesis (the formation of fat tissue). This physiological potential, combined with non-invasive collection methods, make hASCs favorable in the search for new clinical stem cell treatments and for the …

01. Exosense: A Microprobe-Based Method For Single-Step Isolation And Genetic Of Exosomes, Clay Brasuell, Chukwumaobim Nwokwu, Saif Bari, Gergana Nestorova

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The goal of this study is to develop a new method for non-invasive and selective isolation of exosomes from cell media. Exosomes, a type of extracellular vesicles, contain proteins and RNA biomarkers for the diagnosis of diseases. The core of this technology is a stainless-steel microprobe (300μm × 30mm) functionalized with anti-CD63 antibodies that specifically capture pure exosomal subpopulations. This method provides several advantages over commercial exosome-purification technologies. These include increased selectivity, purification of an antigen-specific subpopulation of exosomes, and direct integration of the microprobe with genetic analysis instruments. Experiments were performed to assess the efficiency of the functionalization of …

20. Analysis Of Clapper Rail Habitat Suitability In Coastal Louisiana, Katelyn Mall, Tanna Dartlon, Brian Roberts, Heidi Adams

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Clapper Rail is a marsh bird that nests in tidally influenced wetlands of coastal Louisiana, especially those with established emergent vegetation. These habitat characteristics have been used to develop a habitat suitability index (HSI) model for the rail. Based on preliminary data collected near Cocodrie, Louisiana in August 2019, however, we hypothesized this HSI model did not fully explain nesting habitat suitability for the Rail. Thus, we conducted meta-analyses of the 2019 data to evaluate the influence of other habitat variables on Clapper Rail nesting habitat suitability. These variables the distance from the water’s edge and the elevation at …

18. Do Blue Crabs Respond To Visual Cues Of Avian Predators?, Colton West, Guillaume Rieucau, David Hinkie, Jennifer Hill

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Blue crabs are keystone consumers and scavengers in estuarine ecosystems. The distribution of these important consumers in shallow habitats may be affected by predation from wading birds, like herons. However, we have little information about how or if blue crabs respond to the presence of avian predators. Floating vegetation, like water hyacinth, may provide a refuge from wading birds in shallow habitats. Water hyacinth, an invasive freshwater plant that occupies marsh edges in low salinity marshes, and previous research found that high abundances of blue crabs were associated with this vegetation. Blue crabs may use the hair-like roots that are …

14. The Effect Of Leaf Species On Insect Oviposition Preference And Colonization, Brent Lawson, Julia Earl

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Some insects are known to be common vectors of disease, which is an important public health issue. As such, diverse studies on the ecology of vectors are needed for effective management. Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) is the 2nd most important vector of human diseases, and is a common carrier for dengue fever, yellow fever, and encephalitis viruses. It is commonly found in most areas of the central and eastern U.S., can have oviposition sites that occur close to human settlements (e.g., buckets, tires), and is an invasive species in the U.S. Our study aims to examine the influence of …

13. What Environmental Factors Affect Calling Activity Of Frogs In Northern Louisiana?, Peyton Franklin, Julia Earl, Donald Shepard, Terri Maness

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Multiple variables influence amphibian activity, such as weather, time of year and day, sound, and light (artificial or natural). Previous studies have found that light can impact frog calling behavior, and species vary in their responses to light levels. Because call surveys are useful in determining whether a site is occupied by a species, it is important to determine what factors affect calling activity. In this study, we determined how light and the other previously mentioned variables affect calling activity of two species of frog (Spring Peepers and Cajun Chorus Frogs). We conducted nighttime frog call surveys between January and …

11. An Examination Of The Species-Area-Energy Relationship Driving Decomposer Diversity Within “Sponge” Habitats In An Estuarine Bay, Nicholas Benedetto, Craig Mcclain, Stephanie Archer, Granger Hanks, Natalie Clay

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The species-area relationship is a well-known pattern in ecology detailing a strong positive relationship between habitat area and species richness. Alternatively, the species-energy hypothesis suggests that total energy availability drives species richness, with higher richness in systems with more energy input. While these two hypotheses are difficult to separate as they are positively related, they can be mutually exclusive. Species richness may increase with both area and energy availability independently. Here we test the relative importance of habitat area vs energy availability by placing two artificial substrates, polypropylene and cellulose sponges, with four different surface areas in two estuarine habitats. …

Ionized Or Total Magnesium Levels, What Should We Measure In Critical Ill Patients?, Giuliana Scarpati, Daniela Baldassarre, Filomena Oliva, Gabriele Pascale, Ornella Piazza

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Monitoring and measuring magnesium (Mg) values are essential to prevent the development of numerous complications in perioperative medicine and critically ill patients. Although previous studies suggest that measuring free ionized magnesium (iMg) is more useful for estimating Mg status, clinicians currently rely on measurement of total serum magnesium to determine if supplemental magnesium is needed. In this review, we analyzed the recent literature to decide whether it is better to measure ionized serum Mg or total serum Mg when assessing magnesium status, whether iMg predicts clinical outcome, and what are the difficulties in measuring serum iMg levels in intensive care …

The Relationship Between Depression And Cardiovascular Disease, Jomaries O. Gomez

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

While there has been extensive research on the link between depression and cardiovascular disease, few reviews have summarized the array of findings. In this literature review, we examined approximately 50 clinical papers and research studies to determine if reducing depression could reduce the risk of having a cardiovascular incident and if reducing the severity of cardiovascular disease could reduce depression. We identified two major mechanisms through which depression affects the cardiovascular system. We present evidence that depression and cardiovascular disease may have a reciprocal relationship. For instance, depression is as much of a risk factor for heart disease as smoking …
