Safe Opioid Prescribing Through Proper Screening, Joelle M. Carson Jul 2021

Safe Opioid Prescribing Through Proper Screening, Joelle M. Carson

Dissertations

It is known in today's healthcare that opioid abuse is on the rise in the United States. The project site noted aberrant behaviors and the seeking of narcotics from certain clients in the occupational health clinic. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental quality improvement project was to determine if the implementation of Webster's Opioid Risk Tool (ORT) would impact the number of opioid prescriptions written for acute pain among patients seen an occupational health clinic in central Indiana over four-weeks. The theoretical frameworks utilized in the project included Skinner's behaviorist theory, Bandura's social cognitive theory, and Orem's self-care deficit theory. …

A Crack In The Looking-Glass Self: Hearing And Socialization, Grace Keyes Jul 2021

A Crack In The Looking-Glass Self: Hearing And Socialization, Grace Keyes

The Qualitative Report

A significant problem of classic theories of socialization, such as Cooley’s looking-glass self, is that such theories fail to consider biological factors such as hearing in the process of socialization. To address this problem, I raised a two-pronged question: how does deafness affect social interactions upon which much of socialization is dependent and can the experiences of one person’s lifelong socialization help uncover limitations of a classic theory of socialization? The key study participant in this instrumental case study is an individual with moderately severe hearing loss and whose lifelong experiences were collected primarily through ethnographic field techniques. Findings from …

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a lethal malignancy lacking effective treatment. The Cyclin-dependent kinases 4/6 (CDK4/6) and PI3K/AKT signal pathways play pivotal roles in carcinogenesis and are promising therapeutic targets for HCC. Here we identified a new CDK4/6 and PI3K/AKT multi-kinase inhibitor for the treatment of HCC.

Methods: Using a repurposing and ensemble docking methodology, we screened a library of worldwide approved drugs to identify candidate CDK4/6 inhibitors. By MTT, apoptosis, and flow cytometry analysis, we investigated the effects of candidate drug in reducing cell-viability,inducing apoptosis, and causing cell-cycle arrest. The drug combination and thermal proteomic profiling (TPP) method were …

Cyclic Amp Is Dispensable For Allorecognition In Dictyostelium Cells Overexpressing Pka-C Jul 2021

Cyclic Amp Is Dispensable For Allorecognition In Dictyostelium Cells Overexpressing Pka-C

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Allorecognition and tissue formation are interconnected processes that require signaling between matching pairs of the polymorphic transmembrane proteins TgrB1 and TgrC1 in Dictyostelium. Extracellular and intracellular cAMP signaling are essential to many developmental processes. The three adenylate cyclase genes, acaA, acrA and acgA are required for aggregation, culmination and spore dormancy, respectively, and some of their functions can be suppressed by activation of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase PKA. Previous studies have suggested that cAMP signaling might be dispensable for allorecognition and tissue formation, while others have argued that it is essential throughout development. Here, we show that allorecognition and tissue …

Seasonality Of Social Behaviour Among Immature Belugas (Delphinapterus Leucas) In Managed Care, Jackson R. Ham, Malin K. Lilley, Malin R. Miller, Heather M. Manitzas Hill

Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Belugas (Delphinapterus leucas ) in managed care have been reported to show seasonal variation in socio-sexual behaviour, hormone levels and respiration rates; however, little is known about the social interactions of wild belugas when they are not in summer, near-shore congregations. To better understand if belugas show seasonal variation in social interactions, this study recorded the behaviour of 10 belugas (five females, five males, ranging from birth to 10 years of age) housed in managed care. Social interactions typically peaked in the summer months but persisted at very low levels during the rest of the year. Seasonal variation was most …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Microbial eukaryotes (or protists) in marine ecosystems are a link between primary producers and all higher trophic levels, and the rate at which heterotrophic protistan grazers consume microbial prey is a key mechanism for carbon transport and recycling in microbial food webs. At deep-sea hydrothermal vents, chemosynthetic bacteria and archaea form the base of a food web that functions in the absence of sunlight, but the role of protistan grazers in these highly productive ecosystems is largely unexplored. Here, we pair grazing experiments with a molecular survey to quantify protistan grazing and to characterize the composition of vent-associated protists in …

Molecular Docking And Homology Modeling Approaches Toward The Study Of G-Protein Coupled Receptors, Brittany Nichole Thomas Jul 2021

Molecular Docking And Homology Modeling Approaches Toward The Study Of G-Protein Coupled Receptors, Brittany Nichole Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) comprise the largest family of cell surface receptors in vertebrates. With regulatory roles in physiological functions, GPCR are excellent pharmaceutical targets. Ligand discovery studies are aided by molecular docking simulations to identify potential interactions between small molecules and proteins. Thus far, blind assessments of ligand pose prediction have not provided performance expectations for docking into GPCR targets. Chapter 2 defines GPCR docking performance expectations through investigation of differences in cross-docking simulations based on differences in receptor activation state (active, intermediate, inactive) and ligand function (agonist, inverse agonist, antagonist). Cross-docking most resembled self-docking between docked receptor pairs …

The Treatment Of Streptococcal Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis In Young Children., Laura Norton, Angela Myers Jul 2021

The Treatment Of Streptococcal Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis In Young Children., Laura Norton, Angela Myers

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Pharyngitis is common in children, accounting for nearly 12 million visits annually in the United States. Streptococcus pyogenes or group A streptococcus (GAS) is the most common bacterial cause of pharyngitis for which antibiotics are indicated. Antibiotic treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis virtually eliminates the presence of bacteria from the pharynx and thus removes the risk of subsequent rheumatic fever. GAS is spread from person to person via respiratory droplets with a short incubation period of 2∼5 days. GAS pharyngitis peaks in the late winter and early spring months when children are predominately indoors for school and sports. Colonization is also …

Enrolling Reactive Oxygen Species In Photon-To-Chemical Energy Conversion: Fundamentals, Technological Advances, And Applications, Irving D. Rettig, Theresa M. Mccormick

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

In theory, oxygen (O2) is an ideal chemical reagent because of its high relative abundance and negligible environmental toxicity. In practice however, by the nature of its ground state electronic configuration, many chemical reactions involving O2 are spin forbidden which dramatically decreases its reactivity and thus its utility in applications. More reactive forms of O2 can be achieved by changing its electronic configuration through the use of photochemical and photophysical methods. This review highlights the roll of photon-to-chemical energy conversion in two of these reactive oxygen species (ROS): superoxide (O2−) and singlet oxygen (1O2), which can be accessed through a …

Structural Insights Into The Functional Divergence Of Whib-Like Proteins In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Tao Wan, Magdalena Horova, Daisy Guiza Beltran, Shanren Li, Huey-Xian Wong, Li-Mei Zhang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

WhiB7 represents a distinct subclass of transcription factors in the WhiB-Like (Wbl) family, a unique group of iron-sulfur (4Fe-4S] cluster-containing proteins exclusive to the phylum of Actinobacteria. In Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), WhiB7 interacts with domain 4 of the primary sigma factor (σA4) in the RNA polymerase holoenzyme and activates genes involved in multiple drug resistance and redox homeostasis. Here, we report crystal structures of the WhiB7:σA4 complex alone and bound to its target promoter DNA at 1.55-Å and 2.6-Å resolution, respectively. These structures show how WhiB7 regulates gene expression by interacting with both …

The Effect Of Repetition Tempo On Training Volume, Heart Rate, Blood Lactate, And Muscle Oxygenation When Time Under Tension Is Matched In Recreationally-Trained Lifters, Zachary A. Mang Jul 2021

The Effect Of Repetition Tempo On Training Volume, Heart Rate, Blood Lactate, And Muscle Oxygenation When Time Under Tension Is Matched In Recreationally-Trained Lifters, Zachary A. Mang

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

It is commonly reported that resistance training (RT) with slower-repetition tempos leads to greater metabolic stress because they increase the time under tension (TUT) during sets of exercise. However, little information is available on the effect of different repetition tempos on blood lactate concentration, muscle oxygenation, and heart rate (HR) when TUT and proximity to concentric muscular failure are matched during lower-body RT. In a repeated-measures, cross- over design, 11 recreationally-trained females (n = 5) and males (n = 6) performed five sets of belt squat under the following conditions: Slow-repetition tempo (SLOW; 10 reps with 4:2 second tempo) and …

Monitoring Damage Occurrence, Post-Peak Crack Propagation And Air Permeability In Concrete Using The Brazilian Indirect Tension Test, Angel M. Padilla Jul 2021

Monitoring Damage Occurrence, Post-Peak Crack Propagation And Air Permeability In Concrete Using The Brazilian Indirect Tension Test, Angel M. Padilla

Civil Engineering ETDs

This research aims to investigate the relationship between stress, damage, crack propagation, and permeability evolution in concrete. A novel experimental test method is presented that enables monitoring post-peak cracking behavior of concrete using the Brazilian tension test by slowing crack propagation while concurrently measuring permeability and monitoring damage propagation using acoustic emission techniques. The modified Brazilian test method utilizes spring supports in parallel to the test specimen to off-load the test specimen incrementally to slow down the post-peak crack propagation. A vacuum flow system is attached to the rear side of the concrete during loading to measure apparent air permeability …

Sisters Supporting Sisters: Photovoice & Diabetes Discourse Among Church-Based Women In New Mexico, Nina Mock Cooper Jul 2021

Sisters Supporting Sisters: Photovoice & Diabetes Discourse Among Church-Based Women In New Mexico, Nina Mock Cooper

Communication ETDs

Within the expansive literature on diabetes in other disciplines, the communication lens focuses on the biomedical perspective and emphasizes doctor-patient and patient-provider relations. While there are limited studies that focus on the psychosocial aspect of diabetes morbidity, there is a gap in the existing literature across disciplines on communication about diabetes using both qualitative and participatory methods that are church-based. Because diabetes disproportionately and adversely impacts communities of color that report high levels of religious influence, there is an dire need for more effective interventions to ameliorate this chronic illness that causes high levels of morbidity and mortality.

Re/ Constructing Race And Racism Among Unionized Mexican Immigrants Through Vernacular Discourse, Jocelyn Gomez

Communication ETDs

This study explores the vernacular discourse of unionized Mexican immigrants living and working in Orange County in California. Given the current political climate and the historical roots of the construction of "race" in the United States, I explore how the current sociopolitical conditions of organized Latina/o affect their understanding of race and their experiences with racism. It is also important to address the everyday racism the Latina/o community faces that continue to marginalize them. This study focuses on the vernacular discourses on race and racism of organized working-class Latinas/os who are members of labor unions. Through intentional conversations about racial …

Immodest Immortality: Emperor Maximilian I'S Artistic Program And The Ambraser Heldenbuch, 1504-1519, Jessica Cochran Jul 2021

Immodest Immortality: Emperor Maximilian I'S Artistic Program And The Ambraser Heldenbuch, 1504-1519, Jessica Cochran

History ETDs

Maximilian I (r. 1493-1519) utilized various forms of artistic and literary media throughout his reign to control his public image after his death. This thesis focuses on a manuscript project that has historically received little scholarly attention. The Ambraser Heldenbuch, produced between 1504 and 1517, preserves German heroic epics, many of which would otherwise be lost today. The manuscript has been highly valued for its literary and linguistic significance, but this thesis argues that the entire project sheds light on Maximilian’s plan to immortalize not only his own reputation, but also that of his family. This thesis focuses on …

Mud Binds Mitotic Kinesins Non-Claret Disjunctional And Pavarotti In D. Melanogaster, Vincent Cutillas

Biology ETDs

The cytoskeleton is crucial to maintaining an even distribution of chromosomes and subsequently to divide the cell during every cell cycle. During mitosis, spindle structure and movement dictates how chromosomes will be separated and act as the sole mechanism for even distribution of these chromosomes. The cytoskeleton also remains a major cellular component during cytokinesis when the cell must cleave the membrane in order to form two resulting daughter cells. Both processes require an extensive use of the immobile structures of the cytoskeleton, such as microtubules (MTs), intermediate filaments, and microfilaments, but also the mobile units, which are the motor …

Identifying Unknown Sources Of Nitrate In Two Central Illinois Watersheds, William Andrews Jul 2021

Identifying Unknown Sources Of Nitrate In Two Central Illinois Watersheds, William Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrate pollution is a major environment problem facing many agriculturally intensive areas around the world. In the midwestern USA, upstream tributaries to the Mississippi River via the Mackinaw and Illinois rivers, local excess nitrate can create problems with the safety of drinking water. In central Illinois, lakes, which are regulated and designated for use as municipal water supply, can periodically exceed EPA drinking water criteria for nitrogen. Lake Bloomington of the Money Creek watershed is the primary source of water for the City of Bloomington, whereas Evergreen Lake of the Six Mile Creek watershed serves as auxiliary supply. Both watersheds …

Background:

The source of multipotent stromal cells (MSC) can have a significant influence on the health and expansion capacity of the cells. As the applications for allogeneic MSCs in the treatment of feline diseases increase, the location of the initial donor tissue must be analyzed. To date, comparisons have only been made between feline MSCs collected from bone marrow or abdominal fat. This is the first report to compare cells obtained from different adipose depots in the cat with a focus on clinically relevant donor tissues. The tissue was collected from 34 healthy cats undergoing spaying (fat around the ovaries …

Determining Dietary Niche In Primates Using Portable X-Ray Fluorescence, Theresa C. Schwartz Jul 2021

Determining Dietary Niche In Primates Using Portable X-Ray Fluorescence, Theresa C. Schwartz

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Diet is a critical component of the ecology of an animal. Many dietary reconstructions involve destruction of the sample. Portable X-Ray fluorescence (pXRF), however, is a non-destructive method of gathering elemental data. This is important for research in biological anthropology and diet reconstructions because it leaves a sample intact of which there might only be few specimens. There has been a gap in dietary reconstructions using non-destructive methods like pXRF which is portable, cheaper, and as accurate as destructive methods and should therefore be implemented into research of this nature. This research attempts to validate this method by determining dietary …

Flow Cytometry For Identification Of Prdm1-Eyfp Transgenic Mice, Kayla M. Hufford, Olyvia D. Weaver, Nicole M. Young, Aspen E. King, Gregory K. Dekrey

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The goal of this study was to determine if flow cytometry could be used to identify transgene carrier mice [B6.Cg-Tg(Prdm1-EYFP)1Mnz/J] by their expression of the enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (eYFP) in peripheral blood lymphocytes. In these mice, eYFP expression is under the control of the Prdm1 gene promoter. Littermates were identified as being either wild type or transgene carriers using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of tail tissue. Peripheral blood leukocytes were isolated from each of the mice, and both the percent and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) were determined for eYFP expression by lymphocytes. We found that blood lymphocytes …

Simulating Cambrian Climate: The Significance Of Atmospheric Co2 Concentration And Continental Position, Grace Cutting Jul 2021

Simulating Cambrian Climate: The Significance Of Atmospheric Co2 Concentration And Continental Position, Grace Cutting

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The Cambrian Period began approximately 541 million years ago, and is known for the “Cambrian Explosion”, a time when multicellular life began to rapidly diversify. There is natural historic evidence (isotopes, rock formations, and fossils) that suggests the Cambrian Period experienced a warm climate. However, there is also conflicting evidence that the Cambrian climate may have undergone freezing and thawing cycles, with ice possibly present near the equator. It is critical to understand how ecosystems were able to adapt to past climate changes, especially when analyzing the impacts of modern human activity on climate. Climate model simulations were run to …

Assessing Latinx Colorism And Skin Tone Dating Preferences In Adults, Yessica M. Berumen Martinez Jul 2021

Assessing Latinx Colorism And Skin Tone Dating Preferences In Adults, Yessica M. Berumen Martinez

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Colorism is favoring by individuals of lighter skin over darker skin. This differs from racism because racism is discrimination directed towards racial or ethnic minorities, while colorism typically refers to within-group prejudice. The purpose of this study is to find out whether and how Latinx individuals’ self-perceived skin color, family, and friends influence their dating skin color preference. 145 respondents ages 18 and over completed the In-group Colorism Scale by Harvey, Banks, and Tennial (2017) and answered additional questions on skin tone perceptions on dating, and parent and friend influences. There was no significant connection between self-perceived skin color and …
